plant belonging to the Lamiaceae family that shows a global distribution, especially in the eastern Mediterranean region. Leaves of T. spicata contain large amounts of phenols such as phenolic acids (rosmarinic acid), phenolic monoterpenes (carvacrol), and flavonoids. In Lebanon, T. spicata is currently used as a culinary herb in salad and infusion, as well as for traditional medicinal purposes. Carvacrol (5-isopropyl-2-methyl phenol), the most abundant polyphenol in the organic extract and essential oils, has a great array of pharmacological properties. In fact, carvacrol is largely employed as a food additive and neutraceutical agent. Our aim is to investigate the beneficial effects of T. spicata ethanolic extract (TE) and its main component, carvacrol, using in vitro models of hepatic steatosis and endothelial dysfunction. As a further point, we focused on investigating if and how the binding of carvacrol to albumin, the physiological transporter for drugs in the blood, might be altered by the presence of high levels of fatty acids (FAs), thus impairing the carvacrol bio-distribution in vivo. For that reason, hepatic FaO cells treated with exogenous FAs such as oleate and palmitate mimic hepatosteatosis; endothelial HECV cells exposed to hydrogen peroxide are a model of endothelial dysfunction. In these models, we measured lipid accumulation, free radical production, lipoperoxidation, and nitric oxide release before and after treatment with carvacrol. The carvacrol binding to albumin with/without high levels of long-chain FAs was assessed by absorption and emission spectroscopies. Our findings show that both TE and carvacrol (i) counteracted lipid accumulation in hepatocytes by decreasing the intracellular and extracellular lipid contents in steatotic FaO cells; (ii) decreased oxidative stress in endothelial cells by significantly reducing lipoperoxidation and free radical production, as well as, attenuating the nitric oxide release; (ii) high levels of circulating FAs reduced the binding of carvacrol to albumin. The beneficial effects of TE and carvacrol on both hepatic and endothelial cells point to a nutraceutical potential. However, high levels of circulating FAs, such as those occurring in metabolic disorders, might hinder the carvacrol transport, bio-distribution, and pharmacodynamics. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carvacrol" title="carvacrol">carvacrol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=endothelial%20dysfunction" title=" endothelial dysfunction"> endothelial dysfunction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fatty%20acids" title=" fatty acids"> fatty acids</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-alcoholic%20fatty%20liver%20diseases" title=" non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases"> non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=serum%20albumin" title=" serum albumin"> serum albumin</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142970/the-efficacy-of-thymbra-spicata-ethanolic-extract-and-its-main-component-carvacrol-on-in-vitro-model-of-metabolically-associated-dysfunctions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142970.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">192</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">64</span> Investigation of the Possible Beneficial and Protective Effects of an Ethanolic Extract from Sarcopoterium spinosum Fruits</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hawraa%20Zbeeb">Hawraa Zbeeb</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hala%20Khalifeh"> Hala Khalifeh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohamad%20Khalil"> Mohamad Khalil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Storace"> Francesca Storace</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Baldini"> Francesca Baldini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giulio%20Lupidi"> Giulio Lupidi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Vergani"> Laura Vergani</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Sarcopoterium spinosum, a widely distributed spiny shrub belonging to the Rosaceae family, is rich in essential and beneficial constituents. In fact, S. spinosum fruits and roots are traditionally used as herbal medicine in the eastern Mediterranean landscape, and this shrub is mentioned as a medicinal plant in a large number of ethnobotanical surveys. Aqueous root extracts from S. spinosum are used by traditional medicinal practitioners for weight loss treatment of diabetes and pain. Moreover, the anti-diabetic activity of S. spinosum root extract has been reported in different studies, but the beneficial effects of aerial parts, especially fruits, have not been elucidated yet. The aim of the present study was to investigate the in vitro antioxidant and lipid-lowering properties of an ethanolic extract from S. spinosum fruits using both hepatic (FaO) and endothelial (HECV) cells in an attempt to evaluate its possible employment as a nutraceutical supplement. First of all, in vitro spectrophotometric assays were employed to characterize the extract. The total phenol content (TPC) was evaluated by Folin–Ciocalteu spectrophotometric method and the radical scavenging activity was tested by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2, 2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) assays. After that, the beneficial effects of the extract were tested on cells. FaO cells treated for 3 hours with 0.75 mM oleate/palmitate mix (1:2 molar ratio) mimic in vitro a moderate hepato-steatosis. HECV cells exposed for 1 hour to 100 µM H₂O₂ mimic an oxidative insult leading to oxidative stress conditions. After the metabolic and oxidative insult, both cell lines were treated with increasing concentrations of the S. spinosum extract (1, 10, 25 µg/mL) for 24 hours. The results showed the S. spinosum ethanolic extract is rather rich in phenols (TPC of 18.6 mgGAE/g dry extracts). Moreover, the extract showed a good scavenging ability in vitro (IC₅₀ 15.9 µg/ml and 10.9 µg/ml measured by DPPH and ABTS assays, respectively). When the extract was tested on cells, the results showed that it could ameliorate some markers of cell dysfunction. The three concentrations of the extract led to a significant decrease in the intracellular triglyceride (TG) content in steatotic FaO cells measured by spectrophotometric assay. On the other hand, HECV cells treated with increasing concentrations of the extract did not result in a significant decrease in both lipid peroxidation measured by the Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances (TBARS) assay, and in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production measured by fluorometric analysis after DCF staining. Interestingly, the ethanolic extract was able to accelerate the wound repair of confluent HECV cells with respect to H₂O₂-insulted cells as measured by T-scratch assay. Taken together, these results seem to indicate that the ethanol extract from S. spinosum fruits is rich in phenol compounds and plays considerable lipid-lowering activity in vitro on steatotic hepatocytes and accelerates wound healing repair on endothelial cells. In light of that, the ethanolic extract from S. spinosum fruits could be a potential candidate for nutraceutical applications. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antioxidant%20activity" title="antioxidant activity">antioxidant activity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ethanolic%20extract" title=" ethanolic extract"> ethanolic extract</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lipid-lowering%20activity" title=" lipid-lowering activity"> lipid-lowering activity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phenolic%20compounds" title=" phenolic compounds"> phenolic compounds</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sarcopoterium%20spinosum%20fruits" title=" Sarcopoterium spinosum fruits"> Sarcopoterium spinosum fruits</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/143381/investigation-of-the-possible-beneficial-and-protective-effects-of-an-ethanolic-extract-from-sarcopoterium-spinosum-fruits" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/143381.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">175</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">63</span> COX-2 Inhibitor NS398 Counteracts Chemoresistance to Temozolomide in T98G Glioblastoma Cell Line</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Lombardi">Francesca Lombardi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Rosaria%20Augello"> Francesca Rosaria Augello</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Benedetta%20Cinque"> Benedetta Cinque</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Grazia%20Cifone"> Maria Grazia Cifone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paola%20Palumbo"> Paola Palumbo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a high-grade primary brain tumor refractory to current forms of treatment. The survival benefits of patients with GBM remain unsatisfactory due to the intrinsic or acquired resistance to temozolomide (TMZ), an alkylating agent, used as the first-line chemotherapeutic drug to treat GBM patients. Its cytotoxic effect is visualized by the induction of O6-methylguanine (O6MeG) within DNA. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), an inflammation-associated enzyme, has been implicated in tumorigenesis and progression of GBM, its inhibition shows anticancer activities. In the present study, it was verified if the combination of a COX-2 selective inhibitor, NS398, with TMZ could counteract the TMZ resistance. In particular, the effect of NS398 mixed with TMZ was investigated in the GBM TMZ-resistant cell line, T98G. Cells were pretreated with NS398 (100µM, 24 hours) and then exposed to TMZ alone (200µM), NS398 alone, or both for 72 hours, after which cell growth rate and cycle phases, as well as apoptosis level, were evaluated. Coadministration of NS398 and TMZ caused a significant decrease in cell growth and a progressive increase of dead cells detected by trypan blue staining. Moreover, a significant level of apoptotic cell percentage and alteration of cell cycle phases were observed in T98G treated with TMZ-NS398 combination when compared to untreated cells or TMZ-treated cells. TMZ-resistant tumors, as GBM, express elevated levels of DNA repair enzyme O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT). The mixture drastically reduced MGMT expression in the TMZ-resistant cell line T98G, known to express high levels of MGMT basically. Moreover, while TMZ alone did not influence the COX-2 protein expression, the combination successfully reduced it. In conclusion, these results demonstrated that NS398 enhanced the efficacy of TMZ through cell number reduction, apoptosis induction, and decreased MGMT levels, suggesting the ability of drug combination to reduce the chemoresistance. This drug combination deserves attention and could be considered as a promising therapeutic strategy for GBM patients. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=COX-2" title="COX-2">COX-2</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=COX-2%20inhibitor" title=" COX-2 inhibitor"> COX-2 inhibitor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=glioblastoma" title=" glioblastoma"> glioblastoma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NS398" title=" NS398"> NS398</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=T98G" title=" T98G"> T98G</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=temozolomide" title=" temozolomide"> temozolomide</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129238/cox-2-inhibitor-ns398-counteracts-chemoresistance-to-temozolomide-in-t98g-glioblastoma-cell-line" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129238.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">152</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">62</span> Urban Accessibility of Historical Cities: The Venetian Case Study</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Valeria%20Tatano">Valeria Tatano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Guidolin"> Francesca Guidolin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Peltrera"> Francesca Peltrera</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The preservation of historical Italian heritage, at the urban and architectural scale, has to consider restrictions and requirements connected with conservation issues and usability needs, which are often at odds with historical heritage preservation. Recent decades have been marked by the search for increased accessibility not only of public and private buildings, but to the whole historical city, also for people with disability. Moreover, in the last years the concepts of Smart City and Healthy City seek to improve accessibility both in terms of mobility (independent or assisted) and fruition of goods and services, also for historical cities. The principles of Inclusive Design have introduced new criteria for the improvement of public urban space, between current regulations and best practices. Moreover, they have contributed to transforming “special needs” into an opportunity of social innovation. These considerations find a field of research and analysis in the historical city of Venice, which is at the same time a site of UNESCO world heritage, a mass tourism destination bringing in visitors from all over the world and a city inhabited by an aging population. Due to its conformation, Venetian urban fabric is only partially accessible: about four thousand bridges divide thousands of islands, making it almost impossible to move independently. These urban characteristics and difficulties were the base, in the last 20 years, for several researches, experimentations and solutions with the aim of eliminating architectural barriers, in particular for the usability of bridges. The Venetian Municipality with the EBA Office and some external consultants realized several devices (e.g. the “stepped ramp” and the new accessible ramps for the Venice Marathon) that should determine an innovation for the city, passing from the use of mechanical replicable devices to specific architectural projects in order to guarantee autonomy in use. This paper intends to present the state-of-the-art in bridges accessibility, through an analysis based on Inclusive Design principles and on the current national and regional regulation. The purpose is to evaluate some possible strategies that could improve performances, between limits and possibilities of interventions. The aim of the research is to lay the foundations for the development of a strategic program for the City of Venice that could successfully bring together both conservation and improvement requirements. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=accessibility%20of%20historical%20cities" title="accessibility of historical cities">accessibility of historical cities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=historical%20heritage%20preservation" title=" historical heritage preservation"> historical heritage preservation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inclusive%20design" title=" inclusive design"> inclusive design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=technological%20and%20social%20innovation" title=" technological and social innovation"> technological and social innovation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65178/urban-accessibility-of-historical-cities-the-venetian-case-study" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65178.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">281</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">61</span> Electric Vehicles Charging Stations: Strategies and Algorithms Integrated in a Power-Sharing Model</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Riccardo%20Loggia">Riccardo Loggia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Pizzimenti"> Francesca Pizzimenti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesco%20Lelli"> Francesco Lelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luigi%20Martirano"> Luigi Martirano</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Recent air emission regulations point toward the complete electrification of road vehicles. Lastly, the article emphasizes the necessity of raising awareness about environmental issues to ensure that NBS becomes a regular practice today and can be refined in the future. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nature-based%20solutions" title="nature-based solutions">nature-based solutions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urban%20resilience" title=" urban resilience"> urban resilience</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change%20adaptation" title=" climate change adaptation"> climate change adaptation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=life%20metro%20adapt%20initiative" title=" life metro adapt initiative"> life metro adapt initiative</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/165937/nature-based-solutions-an-intelligent-method-to-enhance-urban-resilience-in-response-to-climate-change" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/165937.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">113</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">59</span> Evaluating Energy Transition of a complex of buildings in a historic site of Rome toward Zero-Emissions for a Sustainable Future</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Silvia%20Di%20Turi">Silvia Di Turi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nicolandrea%20Calabrese"> Nicolandrea Calabrese</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Caffari"> Francesca Caffari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giulia%20Centi"> Giulia Centi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Margiotta"> Francesca Margiotta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giovanni%20Murano"> Giovanni Murano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Ronchetti"> Laura Ronchetti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paolo%20Signoretti"> Paolo Signoretti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lisa%20Volpe"> Lisa Volpe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Domenico%20Palladino"> Domenico Palladino</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Recent European policies have been set ambitious targets aimed at significantly reducing CO2 emissions by 2030, with a long-term vision of transforming existing buildings into Zero-Emissions Buildings (ZEmB) by 2050. This vision represents a key point for the energy transition as the whole building stock currently accounts for 36% of total energy consumption across the Europe, mainly due to their poor energy performance. The challenge towards Zero-Emissions Buildings is particularly felt in Italy, where a significant number of buildings with historical significance or situated within protected/constrained areas can be found. Furthermore, an estimated 70% of the national building stock are built before 1976, indicating a widespread issue of poor energy performance. Addressing the energy ineƯiciency of these buildings is crucial to refining a comprehensive energy renovation approach aimed at facilitating their energy transition. In this framework the current study focuses on analysing a challenging complex of buildings to be totally restored through significant energy renovation interventions. The goal is to recover these disused buildings situated in a significant archaeological zone of Rome, contributing to the restoration and reintegration of this historically valuable site, while also oƯering insights useful for achieving zeroemission requirements for buildings within such contexts. In pursuit of meeting the stringent zero-emission requirements, a comprehensive study was carried out to assess the complex of buildings, envisioning substantial renovation measures on building envelope and plant systems and incorporating renewable energy system solutions, always respecting and preserving the historic site. An energy audit of the complex of buildings was performed to define the actual energy consumption for each energy service by adopting the hourly calculation methods. Subsequently, significant energy renovation interventions on both building envelope and mechanical systems have been examined respecting the historical value and preservation of site. These retrofit strategies have been investigated with threefold aims: 1) to recover the existing buildings ensuring the energy eƯiciency of the whole complex of buildings, 2) to explore which solutions have allowed achieving and facilitating the ZEmB status, 3) to balance the energy transition requirements with the sustainable aspect in order to preserve the historic value of the buildings and site. This study has pointed out the potentiality and the technical challenges associated with implementing renovation solutions for such buildings, representing one of the first attempt towards realizing this ambitious target for this type of building. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20conservation%20and%20transition" title="energy conservation and transition">energy conservation and transition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=complex%20of%20buildings%20in%20historic%20site" title=" complex of buildings in historic site"> complex of buildings in historic site</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=zero-emission%20buildings" title=" zero-emission buildings"> zero-emission buildings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20efficiency%20recovery" title=" energy efficiency recovery"> energy efficiency recovery</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183461/evaluating-energy-transition-of-a-complex-of-buildings-in-a-historic-site-of-rome-toward-zero-emissions-for-a-sustainable-future" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183461.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">76</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">58</span> The Effects of Big 6+6 Skill Training on Daily Living Skills for an Adolescent with Intellectual Disability</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luca%20Vascelli">Luca Vascelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Silvia%20Iacomini"> Silvia Iacomini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giada%20Gueli"> Giada Gueli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Cavallini"> Francesca Cavallini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carlo%20Cavallini"> Carlo Cavallini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Federica%20Berardo"> Federica Berardo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of training on Big 6 + 6 motor skills to promote daily living skills. This paper presents a review of the literature on low carbon and low embodied energy materials in buildings. The embodied energy comprises the energy consumed during the extraction, processing, transportation, construction, and demolition of building materials. While designing a nearly zero energy building, it is necessary to choose and use materials, components, and technologies that allow to reduce the consumption of energy and also to reduce the emissions in the atmosphere during all the Life Cycle Assessment phases. The appropriate choice of building materials can contribute decisively to reduce the energy consumption of the building sector. The increasing worries for the environmental impact of construction materials are witnessed by a lot of studies. The mentioned worries have brought again the attention towards natural materials. The use of more sustainable construction materials and construction techniques represent a major contribution to the eco-efficiency of the construction industry and thus to a more sustainable development. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=embodied%20energy" title="embodied energy">embodied energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=embodied%20carbon" title=" embodied carbon"> embodied carbon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=life%20cycle%20assessment" title=" life cycle assessment"> life cycle assessment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=architecture" title=" architecture"> architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sustainability" title=" sustainability"> sustainability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=material%20construction" title=" material construction"> material construction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77543/the-eco-efficient-construction-a-review-of-embodied-energy-in-building-materials" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77543.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">343</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">56</span> The Economics of Justice as Fairness</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Antonio%20Abatemarco">Antonio Abatemarco</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Stroffolini"> Francesca Stroffolini</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the economic literature, Rawls’ Theory of Justice is usually interpreted in a two-stage setting, where a priority to the worst off individual is imposed as a distributive value judgment. In this paper, instead, we model Rawls’ Theory in a three-stage setting, that is, a separating line is drawn between the original position, the educational stage, and the working life. Hence, in this paper, we challenge the common interpretation of Rawls’ Theory of Justice as Fairness by showing that this Theory goes well beyond the definition of a distributive value judgment, in such a way as to embrace efficiency issues as well. In our model, inequalities are shown to be permitted as far as they stimulate a greater effort in education in the population, and so economic growth. To our knowledge, this is the only possibility for the inequality to be ‘bought’ by both the most-, and above all, the least-advantaged individual as suggested by the Difference Principle. Finally, by recalling the old tradition of ‘universal ex-post efficiency’, we show that a unique optimal social contract does not exist behind the veil of ignorance; more precisely, the sole set of potentially Rawls-optimal social contracts can be identified a priori, and partial justice orderings derived accordingly. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=justice" title="justice">justice</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rawls" title=" Rawls"> Rawls</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inequality" title=" inequality"> inequality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20contract" title=" social contract"> social contract</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95580/the-economics-of-justice-as-fairness" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/95580.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">222</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">55</span> Energy Audit and Renovation Scenarios for a Historical Building in Rome: A Pilot Case Towards the Zero Emission Building Goal</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Domenico%20Palladino">Domenico Palladino</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nicolandrea%20Calabrese"> Nicolandrea Calabrese</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Caffari"> Francesca Caffari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giulia%20Centi"> Giulia Centi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Margiotta"> Francesca Margiotta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giovanni%20Murano"> Giovanni Murano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Ronchetti"> Laura Ronchetti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paolo%20Signoretti"> Paolo Signoretti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lisa%20Volpe"> Lisa Volpe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Silvia%20Di%20Turi"> Silvia Di Turi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The aim to achieve a fully decarbonized building stock by 2050 stands as one of the most challenging issues within the spectrum of energy and climate objectives. Numerous strategies are imperative, particularly emphasizing the reduction and optimization of energy demand. Ensuring the high energy performance of buildings emerges as a top priority, with measures aimed at cutting energy consumptions. Concurrently, it is imperative to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by using renewable energy sources for the on-site energy production, thereby striving for an energy balance leading towards zero-emission buildings. Italy's predominant building stock comprises ancient buildings, many of which hold historical significance and are subject to stringent preservation and conservation regulations. Attaining high levels of energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions in such buildings poses a considerable challenge, given their unique characteristics and the imperative to adhere to principles of conservation and restoration. Additionally, conducting a meticulous analysis of these buildings' current state is crucial for accurately quantifying their energy performance and predicting the potential impacts of proposed renovation strategies on energy consumption reduction. Within this framework, the paper presents a pilot case in Rome, outlining a methodological approach for the renovation of historic buildings towards achieving Zero Emission Building (ZEB) objective. The building has a mixed function with offices, a conference hall, and an exposition area. The building envelope is made of historical and precious materials used as cladding which must be preserved. A thorough understanding of the building's current condition serves as a prerequisite for analyzing its energy performance. This involves conducting comprehensive archival research, undertaking on-site diagnostic examinations to characterize the building envelope and its systems, and evaluating actual energy usage data derived from energy bills. Energy simulations and audit are the first step in the analysis with the assessment of the energy performance of the actual current state. Subsequently, different renovation scenarios are proposed, encompassing advanced building techniques, to pinpoint the key actions necessary for improving mechanical systems, automation and control systems, and the integration of renewable energy production. These scenarios entail different levels of renovation, ranging from meeting minimum energy performance goals to achieving the highest possible energy efficiency level. The proposed interventions are meticulously analyzed and compared to ascertain the feasibility of attaining the Zero Emission Building objective. In conclusion, the paper provides valuable insights that can be extrapolated to inform a broader approach towards energy-efficient refurbishment of historical buildings that may have limited potential for renovation in their building envelopes. By adopting a methodical and nuanced approach, it is possible to reconcile the imperative of preserving cultural heritage with the pressing need to transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon future. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20conservation%20and%20transition" title="energy conservation and transition">energy conservation and transition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20efficiency%20in%20historical%20buildings" title=" energy efficiency in historical buildings"> energy efficiency in historical buildings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=buildings%20energy%20performance" title=" buildings energy performance"> buildings energy performance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20retrofitting" title=" energy retrofitting"> energy retrofitting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=zero%20emission%20buildings" title=" zero emission buildings"> zero emission buildings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20simulation" title=" energy simulation"> energy simulation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183463/energy-audit-and-renovation-scenarios-for-a-historical-building-in-rome-a-pilot-case-towards-the-zero-emission-building-goal" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183463.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">67</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">54</span> Electrocardiogram-Based Heartbeat Classification Using Convolutional Neural Networks</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jacqueline%20Rose%20T.%20Alipo-on">Jacqueline Rose T. However, the traditional rule-based analysis of large volumes of ECG data is time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to human errors. With the advancement of the programming paradigm, algorithms such as machine learning have been increasingly used to perform an analysis of ECG signals. In this paper, various deep learning algorithms were adapted to classify five classes of heartbeat types. The dataset used in this work is the synthetic MIT-BIH Arrhythmia dataset produced from generative adversarial networks (GANs). Various deep learning models such as ResNet-50 convolutional neural network (CNN), 1-D CNN, and long short-term memory (LSTM) were evaluated and compared. ResNet-50 was found to outperform other models in terms of recall and F1 score using a five-fold average score of 98.88% and 98.87%, respectively. 1-D CNN, on the other hand, was found to have the highest average precision of 98.93%. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heartbeat%20classification" title="heartbeat classification">heartbeat classification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=convolutional%20neural%20network" title=" convolutional neural network"> convolutional neural network</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electrocardiogram%20signals" title=" electrocardiogram signals"> electrocardiogram signals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=generative%20adversarial%20networks" title=" generative adversarial networks"> generative adversarial networks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=long%20short-term%20memory" title=" long short-term memory"> long short-term memory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ResNet-50" title=" ResNet-50"> ResNet-50</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162763/electrocardiogram-based-heartbeat-classification-using-convolutional-neural-networks" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162763.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">128</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">53</span> A Comparative Analysis of the Psychological Well-Being of Teenage Fathers and Teenage Mothers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Francesca%20Maunes">Maria Francesca Maunes</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Life is never the same when an adolescent becomes a teenage parent. Living in a developing country with the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the Asia-Pacific region, it is necessary to address the psychological well-being of Filipino teenage parents and be put into consideration. Thus, this quantitative study used both descriptive statistics and quantitative techniques on a total of 70 participants, consisting of 32 teenage fathers and 38 teenage mothers to describe the level of psychological well-being among teenage parents according to the six domains of Ryff’s eudaimonic well-being—autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, positive relations with others, purpose in life, and self-acceptance, and to determine the difference between the psychological well-being of teenage fathers and teenage mothers. Results show that there is no significant difference in the overall psychological well-being between the two groups of participants, yet, when compared by each domain, it is found that there is a significant difference between their purpose in life. While both teenage fathers and teenage mothers are high scorers across all the domains, this does not serve as an assurance that the sustained increase in the number of teenage pregnancies in the Philippines does not anymore pose as a national issue. This could only signify that despite dire circumstances, Filipino teenage parents are able to continue make meaning in their lives and strive to keep living in comfort and contentment, not only for themselves but for their children as well. Additional findings as well as its implications are further discussed. Recommendations and suggestions for further study are presented. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adolescence" title="adolescence">adolescence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adolescent%20psychology" title=" adolescent psychology"> adolescent psychology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=eudaimonic%20psychological%20well-being" title=" eudaimonic psychological well-being"> eudaimonic psychological well-being</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=positive%20psychology" title=" positive psychology"> positive psychology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=teenage%20fathers" title=" teenage fathers"> teenage fathers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=teenage%20mothers" title=" teenage mothers"> teenage mothers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=teenage%20parents" title=" teenage parents"> teenage parents</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=teenage%20pregnancy%20in%20the%20Philippines" title=" teenage pregnancy in the Philippines"> teenage pregnancy in the Philippines</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/85530/a-comparative-analysis-of-the-psychological-well-being-of-teenage-fathers-and-teenage-mothers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/85530.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">293</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">52</span> Pain Analysis in Musicians Using Digital Pain Drawings</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cinzia%20Cruder">Cinzia Cruder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Deborah%20Falla"> Deborah Falla</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Mangili"> Francesca Mangili</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Azzimonti"> Laura Azzimonti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Liliana%20Araujo"> Liliana Araujo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aaron%20Williamon"> Aaron Williamon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marco%20Barbero"> Marco Barbero</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background and aims: According to the existing literature, musicians are at risk to experience a range of musculoskeletal painful conditions. Recently, digital technology has been developed to investigate pain location and pain extent. The aim of this study was to describe pain location and pain extent in musicians using a digital method for pain drawing analysis. Additionally, the association between pain drawing (PD) variables and clinical features in musicians with pain were explored. Materials and Methods: One hundred fifty-eight musicians (90 women and 68 men; age 22.4±3.6 years) were recruited from Swiss and UK conservatoires. Participants were asked to complete a survey including both background musical information and clinical features, the Quick Dash (QD) questionnaire and the digital PDs. Results: Of the 158 participants, 126 musicians (79.7%) reported having pain, with more prevalence in the areas of the neck and shoulders, the lower back and the right arm. The mean of pain extent was 3.1% ±6.5. The mean of QD was larger for musicians showing the presence of pain than for those without pain. Additionally, the results indicated a positive correlation between QD score and pain extent, and there were significant correlations between age and pain intensity, as well as between pain extent and pain intensity. Conclusions: The high prevalence of pain among musicians has been confirmed using a digital PD. In addition, positive correlations between pain extent and upper limb disability has been demonstrated. Our findings highlight the need for effective prevention and treatment strategies for musicians. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pain%20location" title="pain location">pain location</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pain%20extent" title=" pain extent"> pain extent</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=musicians" title=" musicians"> musicians</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pain%20drawings" title=" pain drawings"> pain drawings</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/73947/pain-analysis-in-musicians-using-digital-pain-drawings" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/73947.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">304</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">51</span> Non-Pharmacological Approach to the Improvement and Maintenance of the Convergence Parameter</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andreas%20Aceranti">Andreas Aceranti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guido%20Bighiani"> Guido Bighiani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Crotto"> Francesca Crotto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marco%20Colorato"> Marco Colorato</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stefania%20Zaghi"> Stefania Zaghi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marino%20Zanetti"> Marino Zanetti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Simonetta%20Vernocchi"> Simonetta Vernocchi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The management of eye parameters such as convergence, accommodation, and miosis is very complex; in fact, both the neurovegetative system and the complex Oculocephalgiria system come into play. We have found the effectiveness of the "highvelocity low amplitude" technique directed on C7-T1 (where the cilio-spinal nucleus of the budge is located) in improving the convergence parameter through the measurement of the point of maximum convergence. With this research, we set out to investigate whether the improvement obtained through the High Velocity Low Amplitude maneuver lasts over time, carrying out a pre-manipulation measurement, one immediately after manipulation and one month after manipulation. We took a population of 30 subjects with both refractive and non-refractive problems. Of the 30 patients tested, 27 gave a positive result after the High Velocity Low Amplitude maneuver, giving an improvement in the point of maximum convergence. After a month, we retested all 27 subjects: some further improved the result, others kept, and three subjects slightly lost the gain obtained. None of the re-tested patients returned to the point of maximum convergence starting pre-manipulation. This result opens the door to a multidisciplinary approach between ophthalmologists and osteopaths with the aim of addressing oculomotricity and convergence deficits that increasingly afflict our society due to the massive use of devices and for the conduct of life in closed and restricted environments. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=point%20of%20maximum%20convergence" title="point of maximum convergence">point of maximum convergence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HVLA" title=" HVLA"> HVLA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=improvement%20in%20PPC" title=" improvement in PPC"> improvement in PPC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=convergence" title=" convergence"> convergence</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160010/non-pharmacological-approach-to-the-improvement-and-maintenance-of-the-convergence-parameter" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160010.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">77</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">50</span> Influence of Social Norms and Perceived Government Roles on Environmental Consciousness: A Multi-Socio-Economic Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mona%20Francesca%20B.%20Dela%20Cruz">Mona Francesca B. In order to understand an individual, there is a need to examine cognitive, emotional, dispositional, and behavioral factors which are all indicative of one’s environmental consciousness. This quantitative study explored the moderated mediation between environmental consciousness, socio-economic status, social norms as a mediator, and the perceived role of government as a moderator for 381 Filipinos, aged 25 to 65, in urban and suburban settings. Results showed social norms do not have a mediating effect between socio-economic status and environmental consciousness. This may be influenced by the collectivist culture of the Philippines and the tendency for people to copy behaviors according to the descriptive norm effect. Meanwhile, there exists a moderating effect of the perceived role of government between the relationship of social norms and environmental consciousness which can be explained by the government’s ability to impose social norms that can induce a person to think and act pro-environmentally. Practical applications of this study can be used to tap the ability of the government to strengthen their influence and control over environmental protection and to provide a basis for the development of class-specific environmental solutions that can be done by individuals depending on their socioeconomic status. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20consciousness" title="environmental consciousness">environmental consciousness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=role%20of%20government" title=" role of government"> role of government</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20norms" title=" social norms"> social norms</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=socio-economic%20status" title=" socio-economic status "> socio-economic status </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110030/influence-of-social-norms-and-perceived-government-roles-on-environmental-consciousness-a-multi-socio-economic-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110030.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">164</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">49</span> Bakla Po Ako (I Am Gay): A Case Study on the Communication Styles of Selected Filipino Gays in Disclosing Their Sexual Orientation to Their Parents</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bryan%20Christian%20Baybay"> Bryan Christian Baybay</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20Francesca%20Ronario"> M. The participants were selected through purposive sampling and snowball technique. The theories, Rhetorical Sensitivity of Roderick Hart and Communicator Style of Robert Norton were used to analyze the gathered data and to give support to the communication attitudes, message processing, message rendering and communication styles exhibited in each disclosure. As secondary data and validation, parents and experts in the field of communication, sociology, and psychology were also interviewed and consulted. The study found that Filipino gays vary in the communication styles they use during the disclosure with their parents. All communication styles: impression-leaving, contentious, open, dramatic, dominant, precise, relaxed, friendly, animated, and communicator image were observed by the gays depending on their motivation, relationship and thoughts contemplated. These results lend ideas for future researchers to look into the communication patterns and/or styles of lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders and queers or expand researches on the same subject and the utilization of Social Judgment and Relational Dialectics theories in determining and analyzing LGBTQ communication. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communication%20attitudes" title="communication attitudes">communication attitudes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=communication%20styles" title=" communication styles"> communication styles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Filipino%20gays" title=" Filipino gays"> Filipino gays</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-disclosure" title=" self-disclosure"> self-disclosure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sexual%20orientation" title=" sexual orientation "> sexual orientation </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67496/bakla-po-ako-i-am-gay-a-case-study-on-the-communication-styles-of-selected-filipino-gays-in-disclosing-their-sexual-orientation-to-their-parents" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67496.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">523</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">48</span> The Role of Inflammasomes for aβ Microglia Phagocytosis in Alzheimer Disease</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20La%20Rosa">Francesca La Rosa </a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marina%20Saresella"> Marina Saresella</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mario%20Clerici"> Mario Clerici</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Heneka"> Michael Heneka </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Neuroinflammation plays a key role in the modulation of the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative disorder such as Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Microglia, the main immune effector of the brain, are able to migrate to sites of Amyloid-beta (Aβ) deposition to eliminate Aβ phagocytosis upon activation by multiple receptors: Toll like receptors and scavenger receptors. The issue of whether microglia are able to eliminate pathological lesions such as neurofibrillary tangles or senile plaques from AD brain still remains the matter of controversy. Recent data suggest that the Nod Like Receptor 3 (NLRP3), multiprotein inflammasome complexes, plays a role in AD, as its activation in the microglia by Aβ triggers. IL-1β is produced as a biologically inactive pro-form and requires caspase-1 for activation and secretion. Caspase-1 activity is controlled by inflammasomes. We investigate about the importance of inflammasomes complex in the Aβ phagocytosis and its degradation. The preliminary results of phagocytosis assay and immunofluorescent experiment on primary Microglia cells to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) an Aβ exposure show that a previous treatment with LPS reduce Aβ phagocytosis. Different results were obtained in Primary Microglia wild type, NLRP3 and ASC Knockout suggesting a real inflammasomes involvement in Alzheimer's pathology. Inflammasomes inactivation reduces the production of inflammatory cytokines prolonging the protective activity of microglia and Aβ clearance, featuring a typical microglia phenotype of the early stage of AD disease. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alzheimer%20disease" title="Alzheimer disease">Alzheimer disease</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=innate%20immunity" title=" innate immunity"> innate immunity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=neuroinflammation" title=" neuroinflammation"> neuroinflammation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NLRP3" title=" NLRP3"> NLRP3</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/30475/the-role-of-inflammasomes-for-av-microglia-phagocytosis-in-alzheimer-disease" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/30475.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">456</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">47</span> In vitro Disaggregation and Dissolution of Four IR Lamotrigine Solid Dosage Forms</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ilaria%20Manca">Ilaria Manca</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ilaria%20Manca"> Ilaria Manca</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Pettinau"> Francesca Pettinau</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ignazia%20Mocci"> Ignazia Mocci</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elisabetta%20M.%20Usai"> Elisabetta M. The purpose of this study was to test and compare various solid forms of immediate release (IR) lamotrigine products, at different strenghts, in order to study their disaggregation and dissolution behavior. IR products are designed to release their active substance promptly after administration. Concentration of hydrochloric acid in gastric juice is about 0.1-0.001 M, so FDA (Food and Drug Administration) recommends, for lamotrigine regular tablets, dissolution tests in HCl 0.1 M.Toinvestigate the pH dependency of drug release in the entire gastrointestinal tract, we worked at two additional media with different pH values (4.5 and 6.8), that reflect conditions in it. To afford acceptable dissolution rates, tablets must disintegrate. Disaggregation of constituent particles increases the surface area and substantially increases the dissolution rate. For this reason availability of an active substance from tablets depends on its ability to disintegrate fast in dissolution media. pH of gastrointestinal fluid affects drug absorption by conditioning its solubility and dissolution, but also tablet disintegration may be influenced by it. To obtain information about the quantitative relationship between different mixture components, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used. We also investigate tablet hardness. The investigation carried out confirms pH 1.2 as the ideal environment for the immediate availability of the active substance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dissolution" title="dissolution">dissolution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=disaggregation" title=" disaggregation"> disaggregation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lamotrigine" title=" Lamotrigine"> Lamotrigine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bioequivalence" title=" bioequivalence"> bioequivalence</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32665/in-vitro-disaggregation-and-dissolution-of-four-ir-lamotrigine-solid-dosage-forms" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32665.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">453</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">46</span> Effectiveness of Buteyko Method in Asthma Control and Quality of Life of School-Age Children</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Romella%20C.%20Lina">Romella C. Fourteen (14) subjects with bronchial asthma, aged 7-11 participated in the study. They were equally divided into two groups: the control group received no intervention while the experimental group was asked to attend sessions of Buteyko Method lecture and demonstration. The experimental group was visited for three (3) consecutive weeks to monitor their progress and compliance. Both groups were asked to answer ACQ pre- and post-intervention and PAQLQ before the start of the intervention phase and every week during the follow-up visits. In comparing the asthma control pre-test and post-test mean scores of the control group, no significant difference was noted (p=0.177) while the experimental group showed a significant difference after the administration of Buteyko Method (p=0.002). Moreover, the quality of life pre-test and post-test mean scores of the control group showed no significant difference in any week within one month of follow-up (p=0.736, 0.604, 0.689) while the experimental group showed a significant difference on the third week (p = 0.035) and fourth week (p=0.002) but no significant difference on the second week (p=0.111). Therefore, the use of Buteyko Method within 3-4 weeks as an adjunct to conventional management of asthma helps in improving asthma control and quality of life of school-age children. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Buteyko%20Method" title="Buteyko Method">Buteyko Method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=asthma" title=" asthma"> asthma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=school-age%20children" title=" school-age children"> school-age children</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=asthma%20control" title=" asthma control"> asthma control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quality%20of%20life" title=" quality of life"> quality of life</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/7231/effectiveness-of-buteyko-method-in-asthma-control-and-quality-of-life-of-school-age-children" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/7231.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">424</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">45</span> Graphene Based Materials as Novel Membranes for Water Desalination and Boron Separation </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Risplendi">Francesca Risplendi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Li-Chiang%20Lin"> Li-Chiang Lin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jeffrey%20C.%20Grossman"> Jeffrey C. However, the most popular water filtration method available is the reverse osmosis (RO) technique, still suffers from important drawbacks, such as a large energy demands and high process costs. In addition some serious limitations have been recently discovered, among them, the boron problem seems to have a critical meaning. Boron has been found to have a dual effect on the living systems on Earth and the difference between boron deficiency and boron toxicity levels is quite small. The aim of this project is to develop a new generation of RO membranes based on porous graphene or reduced graphene oxide (rGO) able to remove salts from seawater and to reduce boron concentrations in the permeate to the level that meets the drinking or process water requirements, by means of a theoretical approach based on density functional theory and classical molecular dynamics. Computer simulations have been employed to investigate the relationship between the atomic structure of nanoporous graphene or rGO monolayer and its membrane properties in RO applications (i.e. water permeability and resilience at RO pressures). In addition, an emphasis has been given to multilayer nanoporous rGO and rGO flakes based membranes. By means of non-equilibrium MD simulations, we investigated the water transport mechanism permeating through such multilayer membrane focusing on the effect of slit widths and sheet geometries. These simulations allowed us to establish the implications of these graphene based materials as promising membrane properties for desalination plants and as boron filtration. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=boron%20filtration" title="boron filtration">boron filtration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=desalination" title=" desalination"> desalination</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=graphene%20membrane" title=" graphene membrane"> graphene membrane</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reduced%20graphene%20oxide%20membrane" title=" reduced graphene oxide membrane"> reduced graphene oxide membrane</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/69154/graphene-based-materials-as-novel-membranes-for-water-desalination-and-boron-separation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/69154.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">299</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">44</span> Qualitative Profiling Model and Competencies Evaluation to Fighting Unemployment</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Carta">Francesca Carta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giovanna%20Linfante"> Giovanna Linfante</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Agneni"> Laura Agneni</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Debora%20%20Radicchia"> Debora Radicchia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Camilla%20Micheletta"> Camilla Micheletta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angelo%20Del%20Cimmuto"> Angelo Del Cimmuto</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Overtaking competence mismatches and fostering career pathways congruent with the individual skills profile would significantly contribute to fighting unemployment. The aim of this paper is to examine the usefulness and efficiency of qualitative tools in supporting and improving the quality of caseworkers’ activities during the jobseekers’ profile analysis and career guidance process. The selected target groups are long-term and middle term unemployed, job seekers, young people at the end of the vocational training pathway and unemployed woman with social disadvantages. The experimentation is conducted in Italy at public employment services in 2017. In the framework of Italian labour market reform, the experimentation represents the first step to develop a customized qualitative model profiling; the final general object is to improve the public employment services quality. The experimentation tests the transferability of an OECD self-assessment competences tool in the Italian public employment services. On one hand, the first analysis results will indicate the user’s perception concerning the tool’s application and their different competence levels (literacy, numeracy, problem solving, career interest, subjective well-being and health, behavioural competencies) with reference to the specific target. On the other hand, the experimentation outcomes will show caseworkers understanding regarding the tool’s usability and efficiency for career guidance and reskilling and upskilling programs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=career%20guidance" title="career guidance">career guidance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=evaluation%20competences" title=" evaluation competences"> evaluation competences</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reskilling%20pathway" title=" reskilling pathway"> reskilling pathway</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unemployment" title=" unemployment"> unemployment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/82483/qualitative-profiling-model-and-competencies-evaluation-to-fighting-unemployment" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/82483.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">318</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">43</span> Experimental Simulation Set-Up for Validating Out-Of-The-Loop Mitigation when Monitoring High Levels of Automation in Air Traffic Control</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Oliver%20Ohneiser">Oliver Ohneiser</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20De%20Crescenzio"> Francesca De Crescenzio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gianluca%20Di%20Flumeri"> Gianluca Di Flumeri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jan%20Kraemer"> Jan Kraemer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bruno%20Berberian"> Bruno Berberian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sara%20Bagassi"> Sara Bagassi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nicolina%20Sciaraffa"> Nicolina Sciaraffa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pietro%20Aric%C3%B2"> Pietro Aricò</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gianluca%20Borghini"> Gianluca Borghini</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabio%20Babiloni"> Fabio Babiloni</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> An increasing degree of automation in air traffic will also change the role of the air traffic controller (ATCO). ATCOs will fulfill significantly more monitoring tasks compared to today. However, this rather passive role may lead to Out-Of-The-Loop (OOTL) effects comprising vigilance decrement and less situation awareness. The project MINIMA (Mitigating Negative Impacts of Monitoring high levels of Automation) has conceived a system to control and mitigate such OOTL phenomena. In order to demonstrate the MINIMA concept, an experimental simulation set-up has been designed. This set-up consists of two parts: 1) a Task Environment (TE) comprising a Terminal Maneuvering Area (TMA) simulator as well as 2) a Vigilance and Attention Controller (VAC) based on neurophysiological data recording such as electroencephalography (EEG) and eye-tracking devices. The current vigilance level and the attention focus of the controller are measured during the ATCO’s active work in front of the human machine interface (HMI). The derived vigilance level and attention trigger adaptive automation functionalities in the TE to avoid OOTL effects. This paper describes the full-scale experimental set-up and the component development work towards it. Hence, it encompasses a pre-test whose results influenced the development of the VAC as well as the functionalities of the final TE and the two VAC’s sub-components. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=automation" title="automation">automation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20factors" title=" human factors"> human factors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=air%20traffic%20controller" title=" air traffic controller"> air traffic controller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MINIMA" title=" MINIMA"> MINIMA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=OOTL%20%28Out-Of-The-Loop%29" title=" OOTL (Out-Of-The-Loop)"> OOTL (Out-Of-The-Loop)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EEG%20%28Electroencephalography%29" title=" EEG (Electroencephalography)"> EEG (Electroencephalography)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HMI%20%28Human%20Machine%20Interface%29" title=" HMI (Human Machine Interface)"> HMI (Human Machine Interface)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/84169/experimental-simulation-set-up-for-validating-out-of-the-loop-mitigation-when-monitoring-high-levels-of-automation-in-air-traffic-control" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/84169.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">383</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">42</span> Developmental Psycholinguistic Approach to Conversational Skills - A Continuum of the Sensitivity to Gricean Maxims</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zsuzsanna%20Schnell">Zsuzsanna Schnell</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Ervas"> Francesca Ervas</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Background: the experimental pragmatic study confirms a basic tenet in the Relevance theoretical views in language philosophy. Little is known, however, on the extent to which green workplace behaviors are linked, alongside organizational determinants, and also to various employees’ individual characteristics. The BE-GREEN research project, in collaboration with Eni S.p.A., aimed at investigating the relationship between the adoption of green workplace behaviors and various employees’ job-related and broader individual characteristics as well as organizational determinants. A sample of 513 Eni employees was administered a survey assessing the adoption of green workplace behaviors and the management of events (e.g., near-miss, unsafe conditions, weak signals) that could anticipate the occurrence of incidents with a harmful environmental impact. The survey also assessed employees’ job-related (e.g., proneness toward behaving pro-environmentally at work) and general (e.g., soft skills, connectedness to nature and environmental awareness) characteristics and perceived organizational support (e.g., environmental culture, leadership). Results showed that the adoption of green workplace behaviors was associated with employees’ proneness toward behaving pro-environmentally at work, and these factors were, in turn, influenced by broader individual characteristics related to soft skills as well as a connectedness to nature and environmental awareness, along with perceived organizational support. The management of events potentially anticipating the occurrence of incidents with a harmful environmental impact was mainly associated with perceived organizational support. These findings highlight how, alongside organizational determinants, different employees’ individual characteristics influence their adoption of green workplace behaviors, with important implications for the development of interventions tailored to promote environmental sustainability in organizations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=green%20workplace%20behaviors" title="green workplace behaviors">green workplace behaviors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soft%20skills" title=" soft skills"> soft skills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=connectedness%20to%20nature" title=" connectedness to nature"> connectedness to nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20awareness." title=" environmental awareness."> environmental awareness.</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183318/promoting-environmental-sustainability-in-the-workplace-the-be-green-project" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183318.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">63</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">39</span> Exploring Salient Shifts and Transdiagnostic Factors in Eating Disordered Women</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francesca%20Favero">Francesca Favero</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Despina%20Learmonth"> Despina Learmonth</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Carbohydrate addiction is said to be the sustained dependence on hyperpalatable foods rich in carbohydrates and sugar. This addiction manifests in increased consumption of carbohydrates through binging: a behaviour typically associated with eating disorders. There is a lack of consensus amongst relevant experts as to whether carbohydrates are physiologically or psychologically addictive. With an increased focus on carbohydrate addiction, an outpatient treatment programme, HELP, has been established in Cape Town, South Africa, to specifically address this issue. This research aimed to explore, pre-and post-intervention, the possible presence of, and subsequent shifts in, the maintaining mechanisms identified in the transdiagnostic model for eating disorders. However, the potential for the emergence of other perpetuating factors was not discounted and the nature of the analysis allowed for this possibility. Eight women between the ages of twenty-two and fifty, who had completed the outpatient treatment programme in the last six months, were interviewed. They were asked to speak retrospectively about their personal difficulties, eating and food, and their experience of the treatment. Thematic analysis was employed to identify themes arising from the data. Five themes congruent with the transdiagnostic model’s factors emerged: over-evaluation of weight and shape, core low self-esteem, interpersonal difficulties, clinical perfectionism and mood intolerance. A variety of sub-themes, elaborating upon the various ways in which the disordered eating was maintained, also emerged from the data. Shifts in these maintaining mechanisms were identified. Although not necessarily indicative of recovery, the results suggest that the outpatient HELP programme had a positive overall influence on the participants; and that the transdiagnostic model may be useful in understanding and guiding the treatment of clients who engage in this type of treatment programme. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=eating%20disorders" title="eating disorders">eating disorders</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=binge%20eating%20disorder" title=" binge eating disorder"> binge eating disorder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbohydrate%20addiction" title=" carbohydrate addiction"> carbohydrate addiction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transdiagnostic%20model" title=" transdiagnostic model"> transdiagnostic model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=maintaining%20mechanisms" title=" maintaining mechanisms"> maintaining mechanisms</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thematic%20analysis" title=" thematic analysis"> thematic analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=outpatient%20treatment" title=" outpatient treatment "> outpatient treatment </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/10160/exploring-salient-shifts-and-transdiagnostic-factors-in-eating-disordered-women" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/10160.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">319</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">38</span> Variation of Fertility-Related Traits in Italian Tomato Landraces under Mild Heat Stress</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maurizio%20E.%20Picarella">Maurizio E. In tomato, cultivars, breeding lines, and wild species have been thoroughly evaluated for the response to heat stress in several studies. Here, we address the reaction to temperature stress in a panel of selected landraces representing genotypes cultivated before the advent of professional varieties that usually show high adaptation to local environments. We adopted an experimental design with two open field trials, where transplanting was spaced by one month. In the second field, plants were thus subjected to mild stress with natural temperature fluctuations. The genotypes showed wide variation for both vegetative (plant height) and reproductive (stigma exsertion, pollen viability, number of flowers per inflorescence, and fruit set) traits. On average, all traits were affected by heat conditions; except for the number of flowers per inflorescence, the “G*E” interaction was always significant. In agreement with studies based on different materials, estimated broad sense heritability was high for plant height, stigma exsertion, and pollen viability and low for the number of flowers per inflorescence and fruit set. Despite the interaction, traits recorded in control and in heat conditions were positively correlated. The first two principal components estimated by multivariate analysis explained more than 50% of the total variability. The study indicated that landraces present a wide variability for the response of reproductive traits to temperature stress and that such variability could be very informative to dissect the traits with higher heritability and identify new QTL useful for breeding more resilient varieties. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fruit%20set" title="fruit set">fruit set</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heat%20stress" title=" heat stress"> heat stress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=solanum%20lycopersicum%20L." title=" solanum lycopersicum L."> solanum lycopersicum L.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=style%20exsertion" title=" style exsertion"> style exsertion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tomato" title=" tomato"> tomato</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146199/variation-of-fertility-related-traits-in-italian-tomato-landraces-under-mild-heat-stress" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146199.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">129</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">37</span> Formal Institutions and Women's Electoral Participation in Four European Countries</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sophia%20Francesca%20D.%20Lu">Sophia Francesca D. The quantitative dataset was provided by the University of Chicago and the Inter-University Consortium of Political and Social Research based on a two-year study (2008-2010) of political parties. Belgium engages in constitutionally mandated electoral quotas. Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, on the other hand, have internal party quotas, which are voluntarily adopted by political parties. In analyzing each country’s chi-square and Pearson’s r correlation, Belgium, having an electoral quota, is the only country that was analyzed for electoral quotas. Germany, Italy and the Netherlands’ internal voluntary party quotas were correlated with women’s descriptive representations. Using chi-square analysis, this study showed that the presence of electoral quotas is correlated with an increase in the percentage of women in decision-making bodies as well as with an increase in the percentage of women in decision-making bodies. Likewise, using correlational analysis, a higher number of political parties employing internal party voluntary quotas is correlated with an increase in the percentage of women occupying seats in parliament as well as an increase in the percentage of women nominees in electoral lists of political parties. In conclusion, gender quotas, such as electoral quotas or internal party quotas, are an effective policy tool for greater women’s representation in political bodies. Political parties and governments should opt to have gender quotas, whether electoral or internal party quotas, to address the underrepresentation of women in parliament, decision-making bodies, and policy-formulation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electoral%20quota" title="electoral quota">electoral quota</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Europe" title=" Europe"> Europe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=formal%20institutions" title=" formal institutions"> formal institutions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=institutional%20feminism" title=" institutional feminism"> institutional feminism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=internal%20party%20quota" title=" internal party quota"> internal party quota</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=women%E2%80%99s%20electoral%20participation" title=" women’s electoral participation"> women’s electoral participation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33957/formal-institutions-and-womens-electoral-participation-in-four-european-countries" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33957.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">429</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">36</span> Adaptive Response of Plants to Environmental Stress: Natural Oil Seepage; The Living Laboratory in Tramutola, Basilicata Region</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Francesca%20Scannone">Maria Francesca Scannone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Martina%20Bochicchio"> Martina Bochicchio</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> One of the major environmental problems today is hydrocarbon contamination. The promising sustainable technologies for the treatment of these contaminated sites involves the use of biological organisms. In Agri Valley (Basilicata Region) there is a living laboratory (natural oil seeps) where the selective pressure has enriched the environmental matrices with microorganisms, fungi and plant species able to use the hydrocarbons as a source of metabolic energy, to degrade or tolerate hydrocarbons. Observers visiting this area are fascinated by its unspoiled nature, and the condition of the ecosystem does not appear to has been damaged. The amazing resiliency observed in Tramutola site is of key importance to try to bring green remediation technologies, but no research has been done to identify high-performing native species. The aim of this research was to study how natural processes affect the fate of released oil or how individual species or communities of plants and animals are capable of dealing with the burden of otherwise toxic chemicals. The survey of vegetation was carried out, more than 60 species have been identified and divided into tree, shrub and herb layer. Plant data sheets have been completed only for the species that showed the most appropriate properties for phytoremediation. In general, members of the Salicales, Cyperales, Poales, Fagales, Cornales, Equisetales orders were the most commonly identified orders. They are pioneer plants with high adaptive capacity and vegetative propagation. The literature review has highlighted the existence of rhizosphere effect and a green liver model on selected plants. The study provides significant information on the environmental stress adaptation processes of many indigenous plants that are living and growing on a natural leak of crude oil and gas that migrates up through subsurface. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=green%20liver" title="green liver">green liver</a>, <a
