important asset of any nation. The future of the nation depends directly on how they are brought up and developed. This is why the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted way back in 1948 had proclaimed that childhood was entitled to special care and assistance. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the child adopted in1989 proclaims in article 6 that every child has the inherent right to life and that the State parties shall ensure to the maximum extent possible for the survival and development of the child. In article 32, the convention mandates the States parties to recognize the rights of the child to be protected from economic exploitation and from performing any work that is likely to be hazardous or to interfere with the child‟s education or to be harmful to the child‟s health or physical, mental, spiritual, moral or social development. The purpose of education is to enable the child to develop to his or her fullest possible potential and to learn respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. The general principles of the Convention which are relevant to education cover non-discrimination, the best interests of the child, the child’s right to life, survival and development, and the child’s right to express opinions.
