This fact makes necessary the intergovernmental decision-making procedures. In the intergovernmental level, the institutions such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change develop efforts, methods, and practices in order to plan and suggest climate mitigation and adaptation measures. These measures are based on specific scientific findings and methods making clear the strong connection between science and policy. In particular, these scientific recommendations offer a series of practices, methods, and choices mitigating the problem by aiming at the indirect mitigation of the causes and the factors amplifying climate change. Moreover, modern production and economic context do not take into consideration the social, political, environmental and spatial dimensions of the problem. This work studies the decision-making process working in international and European level. In this context, this work considers the policy tools that have been implemented by various intergovernmental organizations. The methodology followed is based mainly on the critical study of standards and process concerning the connections and cooperation between science and policy as well as considering the skeptic debates developed. The finding of this work focuses on the links between science and policy developed by the institutional and scientific mechanisms concerning climate change mitigation. It also analyses the dimensions and the factors of the science-policy framework; in this way, it points out the causes that maintain skepticism in current scientific circles. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title="climate change">climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change%20mitigation" title=" climate change mitigation"> climate change mitigation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change%20skepticism" title=" climate change skepticism"> climate change skepticism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=IPCC" title=" IPCC"> IPCC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=skepticism" title=" skepticism"> skepticism</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/91176/climate-change-a-critical-analysis-on-the-relationship-between-science-and-policy" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/91176.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">136</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> User Requirements Analysis for the Development of Assistive Navigation Mobile Apps for Blind and Visually Impaired People</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paraskevi%20Theodorou">Paraskevi Theodorou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Apostolos%20Meliones"> Apostolos Meliones</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the context of the development process of two assistive navigation mobile apps for blind and visually impaired people (BVI) an extensive qualitative analysis of the requirements of potential users has been conducted. The analysis was based on interviews with BVIs and aimed to elicit not only their needs with respect to autonomous navigation but also their preferences on specific features of the apps under development. The elicited requirements were structured into four main categories, namely, requirements concerning the capabilities, functionality and usability of the apps, as well as compatibility requirements with respect to other apps and services. The main categories were then further divided into nine sub-categories. This classification, along with its content, aims to become a useful tool for the researcher or the developer who is involved in the development of digital services for BVI. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=accessibility" title="accessibility">accessibility</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=assistive%20mobile%20apps" title=" assistive mobile apps"> assistive mobile apps</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=blind%20and%20visually%20impaired%20people" title=" blind and visually impaired people"> blind and visually impaired people</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=user%20requirements%20analysis" title=" user requirements analysis"> user requirements analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/114395/user-requirements-analysis-for-the-development-of-assistive-navigation-mobile-apps-for-blind-and-visually-impaired-people" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/114395.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">123</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> An Analysis of the Impact of Immunosuppression upon the Prevalence and Risk of Cancer</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aruha%20Khan">Aruha Khan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Brynn%20E.%20Kankel"> Brynn E. Specifically, the long–term or chronic response is associated with the suppression or dysregulation of immune function. It is also widely noted that the occurrence of cancer is greatly correlated to the suppression of the immune system. It is thus necessary to explore the impact of long–term or chronic stress upon the prevalence and risk of cancer. To what extent can the dysregulation of immune function caused by long–term exposure to stress be controlled or minimized? This study focuses explicitly upon immunosuppression due to its ability to increase disease susceptibility, including cancer itself. Based upon an analysis of the literature relating to the fundamental structure of the immune system alongside the prospective linkage of chronic stress and the development of cancer, immunosuppression may not necessarily correlate directly to the acquisition of cancer—although it remains a contributing factor. A cross-sectional analysis of the survey data from the University of Tennessee Medical Center (UTMC) and Harvard Medical School (HMS) will provide additional supporting evidence (or otherwise) for the hypothesis of the study about whether immunosuppression (caused by the chronic stress response) notably impacts the prevalence of cancer. Finally, a multidimensional framework related to education on chronic stress and its effects is proposed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=immune%20system" title="immune system">immune system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=immunosuppression" title=" immunosuppression"> immunosuppression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=long%E2%80%93term%20%28chronic%29%20stress" title=" long–term (chronic) stress"> long–term (chronic) stress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=risk%20of%20cancer" title=" risk of cancer"> risk of cancer</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/118862/an-analysis-of-the-impact-of-immunosuppression-upon-the-prevalence-and-risk-of-cancer" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/118862.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">134</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> The Need for a Consistent Regulatory Framework for CRISPR Gene-Editing in the European Union</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andrew%20Thayer">Andrew Thayer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Courtney%20Rondeau"> Courtney Rondeau</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paraskevi%20Papadopoulou"> Paraskevi Papadopoulou</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) gene-editing technologies have generated considerable discussion about the applications and ethics of their use. However, no consistent guidelines for using CRISPR technologies have been developed -nor common legislation passed related to gene editing, especially as it is connected to genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the European Union. The recent announcement that the first babies with CRISPR-edited genes were born, along with new studies exploring CRISPR’s applications in treating thalassemia, sickle-cell anemia, cancer, and certain forms of blindness, have demonstrated that the technology is developing faster than the policies needed to control it. Therefore, it can be seen that a reasonable and coherent regulatory framework for the use of CRISPR in human somatic and germline cells is necessary to ensure the ethical use of the technology in future years. The European Union serves as a unique region of interconnected countries without a standard set of regulations or legislation for CRISPR gene-editing. We posit that the EU would serve as a suitable model in comparing the legislations of its affiliated countries in order to understand the practicality and effectiveness of adopting majority-approved practices. Additionally, we present a proposed set of guidelines which could serve as a basis in developing a consistent regulatory framework for the EU countries to implement but also act as a good example for other countries to adhere to. Finally, an additional, multidimensional framework of smart solutions is proposed with which all stakeholders are engaged to become better-informed citizens. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CRISPR" title="CRISPR">CRISPR</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ethics" title=" ethics"> ethics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=regulatory%20framework" title=" regulatory framework"> regulatory framework</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=European%20legislation" title=" European legislation"> European legislation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/118942/the-need-for-a-consistent-regulatory-framework-for-crispr-gene-editing-in-the-european-union" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/118942.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">135</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> Experience of Two Major Research Centers in the Diagnosis of Cardiac Amyloidosis from Transthyretin</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ioannis%20Panagiotopoulos">Ioannis Panagiotopoulos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aristidis%20Anastasakis"> Aristidis Anastasakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Toutouzas"> Konstantinos Toutouzas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ioannis%20Iakovou"> Ioannis Iakovou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Charalampos%20Vlachopoulos"> Charalampos Vlachopoulos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vasilis%20Voudris"> Vasilis Voudris</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Georgios%20Tziomalos"> Georgios Tziomalos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Tsioufis"> Konstantinos Tsioufis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Efstathios%20Kastritis"> Efstathios Kastritis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandros%20Briassoulis"> Alexandros Briassoulis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kimon%20Stamatelopoulos"> Kimon Stamatelopoulos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexios%20Antonopoulos"> Alexios Antonopoulos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paraskevi%20Exadaktylou"> Paraskevi Exadaktylou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Evanthia%20Giannoula"> Evanthia Giannoula</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anastasia%20Katinioti"> Anastasia Katinioti</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Kalantzi"> Maria Kalantzi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Evangelos%20Leontiadis"> Evangelos Leontiadis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eftychia%20Smparouni"> Eftychia Smparouni</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ioannis%20Malakos"> Ioannis Malakos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nikolaos%20Aravanis"> Nikolaos Aravanis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Argyrios%20Doumas"> Argyrios Doumas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Koutelou"> Maria Koutelou</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Introduction: Cardiac amyloidosis from Transthyretin (ATTR-CA) is an infiltrative disease characterized by the deposition of pathological transthyretin complexes in the myocardium. This study describes the characteristics of patients diagnosed with ATTR-CA from 2019 until present at the Nuclear Medicine Department of Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center and AHEPA Hospital. These centers have extensive experience in amyloidosis and modern technological equipment for its diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Records of consecutive patients (N=73) diagnosed with any type of amyloidosis were collected, analyzed, and prospectively followed. The diagnosis of amyloidosis was made using specific myocardial scintigraphy with Tc-99m DPD. Demographic characteristics, including age, gender, marital status, height, and weight, were collected in a database. Clinical characteristics, such as amyloidosis type (ATTR and AL), serum biomarkers (BNP, troponin), electrocardiographic findings, ultrasound findings, NYHA class, aortic valve replacement, device implants, and medication history, were also collected. Some of the most significant results are presented. Results: A total of 73 cases (86% male) were diagnosed with amyloidosis over four years. The mean age at diagnosis was 82 years, and the main symptom was dyspnea. Most patients suffered from ATTR-CA (65 vs. 8 with AL). Out of all the ATTR-CA patients, 61 were diagnosed with wild-type and 2 with two rare mutations. Twenty-eight patients had systemic amyloidosis with extracardiac involvement, and 32 patients had a history of bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. Four patients had already developed polyneuropathy, and the diagnosis was confirmed by DPD scintigraphy, which is known for its high sensitivity. Among patients with isolated cardiac involvement, only 6 had left ventricular ejection fraction below 40%. The majority of ATTR patients underwent tafamidis treatment immediately after diagnosis. Conclusion: In conclusion, the experiences shared by the two centers and the continuous exchange of information provide valuable insights into the diagnosis and management of cardiac amyloidosis. Clinical suspicion of amyloidosis and early diagnostic approach are crucial, given the availability of non-invasive techniques. Cardiac scintigraphy with DPD can confirm the presence of the disease without the need for a biopsy. The ultimate goal still remains continuous education and awareness of clinical cardiologists so that this systemic and treatable disease can be diagnosed and certified promptly and treatment can begin as soon as possible. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=amyloidosis" title="amyloidosis">amyloidosis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diagnosis" title=" diagnosis"> diagnosis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=myocardial%20scintigraphy" title=" myocardial scintigraphy"> myocardial scintigraphy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tc-99m%20DPD" title=" Tc-99m DPD"> Tc-99m DPD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transthyretin" title=" transthyretin"> transthyretin</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176716/experience-of-two-major-research-centers-in-the-diagnosis-of-cardiac-amyloidosis-from-transthyretin" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176716.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">90</span> </span> </div> </div> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">&copy;
