<t><p class="indent1">And the government<MH4951> will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>rest<MH1961> on His shoulders<MH7926>; <t><p class="indent1">And His name<MH8034> will be called<MH7121> Wonderful<MH6382> Counselor<MH3289>, Mighty<MH1368> God<MH410>, <t><p class="indent1">Eternal<MH5703> Father<MH1>, Prince<MH8269> of Peace<MH7965>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>There<MH369> will<MH369> be<MH369> no<MH369> end<MH7093> to the increase<MH4766> of <i>His</i> government<MH4951> or of peace<MH7965> <t><p class="indent1">On the throne<MH3678> of David<MH1732> and over<MH5921> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>his kingdom<MH4467>, <t><p class="indent1">To establish<MH3559> it and to uphold<MH5582> it with justice<MH4941> and righteousness<MH6666> <t><p class="indent1">From then<MH6258> on and forevermore<MH5703, 5769>. <t><p class="indent1">The zeal<MH7068> of the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635> will accomplish<MH6213a> this<MH2088>. <p class="hdg">God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The Lord<MH136> sends<MH7971> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>message<MH1697> against Jacob<MH3290>, <t><p class="indent1">And it falls<MH5307> on Israel<MH3478>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> know<MH3045> <i>it,</i> <t><p class="indent1"><i>That is,</i> Ephraim<MH669> and the inhabitants<MH3427> of Samaria<MH8111>, <t><p class="indent1">Asserting<MH559> in pride<MH1346> and in arrogance<MH1433> of heart<MH3824>: <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“The bricks<MH3843> have fallen<MH5307> down<MH5307>, <t><p class="indent1">But we will rebuild<MH1129> with smooth<MH1496> stones<MH1496>; <t><p class="indent1">The sycamores<MH8256> have been cut<MH1438> down<MH1438>, <t><p class="indent1">But we will replace<MH2498> <i>them</i> with cedars<MH730>.” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Therefore the LORD<MH3068> raises<MH7682> superior<MH7682> adversaries<MH6862c> against<MH5921> them from Rezin<MH7526> <t><p class="indent1">And provokes<MH5526a> their enemies<MH340>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The Arameans<MH758> from the east<MH6924a> and the Philistines<MH6430> from the west<MH268>; <t><p class="indent1">And they devour<MH398> Israel<MH3478> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>gaping<MH3605> jaws<MH6310>. <t><p class="indent1">In <i>spite of</i> all<MH3605> this<MH2088>, His anger<MH639> does not turn<MH7725> away<MH7725>, <t><p class="indent1">And His hand<MH3027> is still<MH5750> stretched<MH5186> out<MH5186>. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Yet the people<MH5971a> do not turn<MH7725> back<MH7725> to Him who struck<MH5221> them, <t><p class="indent1">Nor<MH3808> do they seek<MH1875> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> cuts<MH3772> off<MH3772> head<MH7218> and tail<MH2180> from Israel<MH3478>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>Both</i> palm<MH3712> branch<MH3712> and bulrush<MH100> in a single<MH259> day<MH3117>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>The head<MH7218> is the elder<MH2205> and esteemed<MH6440, 5375> man, <t><p class="indent1">And the prophet<MH5030> who teaches<MH3384> falsehood<MH8267> is the tail<MH2180>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>For those who guide<MH833> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> are leading<MH8582> <i>them</i> astray<MH8582>; <t><p class="indent1">And those who are guided<MH833> by them are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>confused<MH1104>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/9-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Therefore<MH5921, 3651> the Lord<MH136> does not rejoice<MH8055> over<MH8055> their young<MH970> men<MH970>, <t><p class="indent1">Nor<MH3808> does He have<MH7355> compassion<MH7355> on<MH7355> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>orphans<MH3490> or their widows<MH490>;
