The specific animals mentioned here—two young bulls, one ram, and seven male lambs—reflect the importance and solemnity of the occasion. Bulls were considered valuable and symbolized strength and service, while rams were often associated with leadership and sacrifice. The number seven, often seen as a symbol of completeness or perfection in the Bible, underscores the thoroughness of the offering. The requirement for the animals to be a year old indicates they were in their prime, representing the best of what the Israelites could offer to God. This offering was part of the regular sacrifices commanded by God, emphasizing the need for continual dedication and atonement.
as a pleasing aroma to the LORD
The phrase "a pleasing aroma" is a recurring motif in the Old Testament, signifying God's acceptance of the sacrifice. It conveys the idea that the offering, when given in obedience and sincerity, was delightful to God. This concept is echoed in the New Testament, where Christ's sacrifice is described as a "fragrant offering" (Ephesians 5:2), drawing a parallel between the Old Testament sacrifices and the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus. The pleasing aroma symbolizes reconciliation and restored fellowship between God and His people. It also highlights the importance of the heart's attitude in worship, as God desires offerings given with genuine devotion and faith.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Moses
The leader of the Israelites who received the laws and instructions from God, including the sacrificial system outlined in Numbers.

2. Israelites
The chosen people of God, who were given specific instructions on how to worship and offer sacrifices.

3. Tabernacle
The portable dwelling place for the divine presence, where sacrifices were made.

4. Burnt Offering
A type of sacrifice in which the entire offering is consumed by fire, symbolizing complete dedication to God.

5. Feast of Weeks (Pentecost)
The context of this offering, a time of thanksgiving for the harvest and a reminder of God's provision.
Teaching Points
The Importance of Obedience
The Israelites were given specific instructions for worship, highlighting the importance of obedience in our relationship with God.

Symbolism of Sacrifice
The unblemished animals represent purity and the need for a perfect sacrifice, pointing to Christ's ultimate sacrifice.

Worship as a Lifestyle
Just as the Israelites were to offer sacrifices regularly, we are called to live lives of continual worship and dedication to God.

God's Provision and Our Response
The offerings during the Feast of Weeks remind us of God's provision and our responsibility to respond with gratitude and worship.

Community Worship
The communal aspect of these offerings underscores the importance of gathering together in worship and supporting one another in faith.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Numbers 28

How do the repeated animal offerings in Numbers 29 align or conflict with the later prophetic criticism of sacrifices (e.g., Isaiah 1:11)?

How do we reconcile the timing of the New Moon feast in 1 Samuel 20:5 with other Old Testament passages referencing similar observances?

Numbers 23:1-2: Is there any archaeological evidence supporting Balaam's elaborate sacrifices on seven altars with seven bulls and seven rams?

Is there any archaeological record corroborating the elaborate sacrificial system described in Numbers 29?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(27) Two young bullocks, one ram, seven lambs of the first year.--In Leviticus 23:18 the animal sacrifices enjoined are one young bullock, two rams, and seven lambs without blemish. The Mishnah (Menach. iv. 2) considers that these animals were to be presented together with the loaves, whereas those named in Numbers were additional sacrifices of the day. Josephus also thinks that three bullocks, two [three] rams, and fourteen sheep were offered at this time (Antt. iii. 10, ? 6).

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 27. - Ye shall offer the burnt offering. The festal sacrifice here prescribed is exactly the same as for the days of Mattsoth and for the feast of the new moon. It is not the same as that prescribed for the same day in Leviticus 23, and it is difficult to determine whether it was meant to supersede the previous ordinance, or to be distinct and additional. The fact that no notice is taken of the sacrifice already ordered would seem to point to the former conclusion; but the further fact that no mention is made of the offering of wave-loaves, with which the sacrifices in Leviticus were distinctively connected, seems to show that the two lists were independent (cf. Josephus, 'Ant.,' 3:10, 6). The fact seems to be that throughout this section no sacrifices are mentioned save such as formed a part of the system which is here for the first time elaborated.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
Present
וְהִקְרַבְתֶּ֨ם (wə·hiq·raḇ·tem)
Conjunctive waw |
