First, a general model of the five most significant matrices of media in the history of mankind is presented and discussed. Second, the paper addresses some of the issues arising from the interrelationships between media in a given matrix as well as the transition from one matrix into another. When it comes to more specific statistics, 48.64% of those users are male, and 51,31% are female. Therefore, we must not neglect the fact that there are gender differences in wishes, needs and activities, as well as the differences which might be noticed in the Internet usage. This paper represents the difference between men and women regarding the Internet usage, the purpose of the Internet usage (news, sport, entertainment, social networks, online shopping), as well as the difference in time management online. Every aspect of it including its channels keeps evolving by the year. Despite the controversies that range on whether the Internet is a mass medium or not, the number of its audience members that keeps increasing geometrically by the day makes it undeniably one. It is a new mass medium and a forceful one too, which has become an integral part of other mass media as well as the media supporting industries-public relations and advertising. This paper presents the Internet not just as a channel for mass communication like any other technological tool used by contemporary man to transmit public messages rapidly to a large, mixed and anonymous audience, but as a unique mass medium that even stands out as the medium of other mass medium. The Internet is not only a mass medium but is also a global medium with a potential to reach everyone on the globe. Our philosophy of the Internet includes several components of the philosophy of technology, information, communication, culture and organization because we use four different coexisting contexts for the better understanding of the nature of the Internet: the technological, the communication, the cultural and the organism ones. This philosophy of the Internet shows that the Internet is the sphere of a new mode of human existence, basically independent from, but built on and coexisting with the former (natural and societal) spheres of existence, and created by the late-modern humans. , human existence man aims: to build up a specific community. Every element of the human communities and the community itself are created by communication. Communication via Internet is a technology of building up virtual, open, extended communities. A deeper understanding of the communication via Internet is based on a communication situation analysis, including considerations on the active role of the media, the specificity of computers as communication machine, and the possibility of the highest level of individual control of the situation. A central point in the discussion is that the pair System/Environment should not be viewed as static analytical poles, but rather as dynamic and interchangeable elements, so that Internet can be conceived both as System and/or Environment, depending on the type of phenomenon one is observing. As a counterpoint to this proposition, the recurrent and &quot;common-sense&quot; notion of Internet as a new medium is presented and criticized. The article also discusses and puts under critical scrutiny the role usually assigned to Internet as a change catalyst or accelerator and the implicit or explicit acceptance of an evolutionary new step in social organization represented by the generalization of New Technologies of Communication. The paper is part of an ongoing research on Digital Cities and Local Networks and proposes some initial steps towards the construction of a model of interpretation based on systems analysis adapted to the particularities of Internet and Cyberspace.
