He was born in Augsburg, Germany when it was part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, and became a Swedish citizen in 1902, but served in the German Army during World War I. On his mother's side he was a descendant of Swiss mathematician and physicist <a href="/people/954/000048810/">Leonhard Euler</a>. His father-in-law, chemist <a href="/people/143/000213501/">Per Theodor Cleve</a>, discovered the elements holmium and thulium.
