succeed in my goal of becoming a doctor.</p> <p>At the risk of sounding hyperbolic, I’d even go so far as to say that <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150411111252/http://thisisstatistics.org/" target="_blank">statistics</a> may have been the most useful class of my entire college career, teaching me valuable and practical skills that have given me an edge in my professional development.</p> <p>I’m a physician completing my final year of residency. And yes, I’ve learned a lot of really valuable, critically important things in medical school, from the molecular foundations of medicine and cardiovascular health to respiratory disease and gastrointestinal function, to name just a few.</p> <div class="spike"> RELATED: <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150411111252/http://college.usatoday.com/2015/04/08/national-student-loan-debt-reaches-a-bonkers-1-2-trillion/">National student loan debt reaches a bonkers $1.2 trillion</a></div> <p>But statistics has always crept into my professional world in numerous and sometimes surprising ways, giving me an advantage I never would have anticipated when I signed up for the course in college to fulfill a degree requirement.</p> <p>As a doctor, I’m inundated with data and research studies that analyze and draw conclusions from this data. Sometimes those conclusions are sound; sometimes they aren’t. My background in statistics allows me to tell the difference and identify treatments that can have a meaningful impact on the outcomes of my patients.</p> <p>I work in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center just outside of Washington, D.C. Many of my patients have lost limbs or sustained serious brain injuries, often in the course of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Knowing what to do with that data, and which conclusions I can accurately draw from it, is a critical skill.</p> <p>The data analysis I conduct can shape a patient’s treatment, such as optimizing medications and planning for surgery. These decisions are important as they can make a significant difference in recovery for patients and the abilities they are able to restore.</p> <p>But an understanding of statistics isn’t just important for doctors. In fact, it’s likely that statistics will prove an asset for any student pursuing any career. For example, statistical science is used in business to make all types of decisions, such as whether to pursue a strategic acquisition or to enter a new market. Advertisers and marketers rely on it more and more to decide which customers to target.</p> <p>Technology companies use it to make smarter software applications. Even philanthropic organizations are using data analysis to decide which projects to fund and how to rate their success.</p> <p>What does all this mean for college students? It means they should run—not walk—to sign up for a statistics course as soon as possible. They may find that statistics is a lot more interesting, and even a bit more fun, than anticipated.
