Dit is een doel op zich (in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld een pelgrimstocht of zakenreis) en de toerist keert na redelijk korte tijd weer terug naar huis (in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld nomaden). <p> <b>Toerisme</b> is een bedrijfstak die is ontstaan toen grote aantallen mensen begonnen te reizen. Naarmate de maatschappij welvarender werd en mensen langer bleven leven, werd het niet alleen mogelijk, maar ook waarschijnlijk dat mensen met lagere en gemiddelde inkomens en een vaste baan in goede gezondheid en met aardig wat spaargeld met pensioen zouden gaan. <p> Een toerist kan geïnteresseerd zijn in (onder andere) de cultuur<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20030401224336/http://nl.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Cultuur&action=edit" class="new" title="Cultuur">?</a> of de natuur<a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20030401224336/http://nl.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Natuur&action=edit" class="new" title="Natuur">?</a> van de bezochte plaats. Rijke mensen hebben altijd al naar verre gebieden gereisd vanwege de reis: om fantastische gebouwen te zien, nieuwe talen te leren of nieuwe gerechten te leren eten. <p> <h3> Geschiedenis </h3> <p> De woorden 'toerist' en 'toerisme' werden door de <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20030401224336/http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkenbond" class="internal" title="Volkenbond">Volkenbond</a> in <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20030401224336/http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/1937" class="internal" title="1937">1937</a> voor het eerst gebruikt om mensen mee aan te duiden die voor meer dan vierentwintig uur naar het buitenland gingen.
