He is known for his brief but significant role in the narrative concerning Abimelech, the son of Gideon (also known as Jerubbaal). Gaal's account unfolds in the context of the political and social unrest that followed the death of Gideon, during a time when Israel was without a centralized monarchy and was ruled by judges.

Background and Context

After Gideon's death, Abimelech, one of his sons, sought to establish himself as king over Shechem and its surrounding areas. Abimelech's rule was marked by violence and treachery, as he killed his seventy brothers to secure his position, sparing only Jotham, the youngest, who escaped. Abimelech's reign was characterized by tyranny and was supported by the leaders of Shechem, who provided him with resources to carry out his plans.

Gaal's Role

Gaal, the son of Ebed, enters the narrative in Judges 9:26. He arrives in Shechem with his brothers and gains the trust of the city's leaders. During a festival in Shechem, Gaal seizes the opportunity to challenge Abimelech's authority. In Judges 9:28-29 , Gaal questions the legitimacy of Abimelech's rule, saying, "Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? Serve the men of Hamor, the father of Shechem! But why should we serve him? If only this people were under my authority, I would remove Abimelech; I would say to Abimelech, 'Muster your army and come out!'"

Gaal's words incite the people of Shechem against Abimelech, and he positions himself as a potential leader who could overthrow Abimelech's oppressive rule. His challenge to Abimelech is both a political maneuver and an appeal to the Shechemites' sense of identity and autonomy.

Conflict with Abimelech

Zebul, the governor of the city and a supporter of Abimelech, hears of Gaal's intentions and informs Abimelech. In response, Abimelech sets an ambush outside the city. The following day, as Gaal stands at the entrance of the city, he sees Abimelech's forces approaching. Despite Zebul's attempts to downplay the threat, Gaal realizes the danger and goes out to fight Abimelech.

The ensuing battle is described in Judges 9:39-40 : "So Gaal went out before the leaders of Shechem and fought against Abimelech, but Abimelech pursued him, and Gaal fled before him. And many Shechemites fell wounded all the way to the entrance of the gate." Gaal's forces are defeated, and he is driven out of Shechem.

Aftermath

Following Gaal's expulsion, Abimelech continues his campaign against Shechem, ultimately destroying the city and sowing it with salt as a symbol of its utter ruin. Gaal's brief uprising against Abimelech serves as a catalyst for the further unraveling of Abimelech's rule, which eventually leads to his own demise.

Significance

Gaal's account highlights the themes of leadership, legitimacy, and the consequences of rebellion against unjust authority. His challenge to Abimelech underscores the tension between local autonomy and centralized power, a recurring theme in the period of the judges. Gaal's actions, though ultimately unsuccessful, contribute to the larger narrative of divine justice and the downfall of tyrannical rulers in the biblical text.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Gaal
contempt; abomination
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Gaal
(contempt), son of Ebed, aided the Shechemites in their rebellion against Abimelech.
