biochar production: A pilot study</a></h5> <h4 class="text-b-color"> Abstract: </h4> <p class="lead"><div> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">Biochar, a carbon-rich material derived from the pyrolysis of biomass, offers significant potential for enhancing soil fertility, improving crop yields, and mitigating climate change. This study presents a pilot project conducted by NRSP in South Punjab, Pakistan, supported by Shell Pakistan, aimed at evaluating the feasibility and benefits of biochar production and its application in agriculture.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">The project utilized a biochar production unit, capable of producing 400 kg of biochar daily from various agricultural residues such as corn stalks, wheat straw, and sugarcane waste. The pilot study employed a block design to assess the impact of biochar on soil health and crop yields across 16 blocks, each 4 acers. Treatments included no biochar and no synthetic fertilizer, biochar plus partial synthetic fertilizer, higher dosage of biochar plus very low synthetic fertilizer, and only synthetic fertilizer.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif"><strong>Key findings from the pilot study include:</strong></span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">Soil Health: Biochar application decreased soil salinity, improved pH levels, and increased organic matter and nutrient availability (phosphorus and potassium).</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">Crop Yields: Corn production increased by 12-15% with biochar treatment, demonstrating its effectiveness as a soil amendment.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">Biochar Characteristics: Distinct properties of wheat and sugarcane biochar influenced their suitability for different soil conditions. Sugarcane biochar exhibited higher water holding capacity and porosity, while wheat biochar had higher volatile matter content.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">Community Acceptance and Participation: The pilot found significant community engagement in the collection of agricultural residues, contributing to the project's success. Community awareness initiatives ensured widespread acceptance of using biochar, highlighting the social feasibility of biochar technology.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">Cost-Effectiveness: The reduced use of synthetic fertilizers due to biochar application proved cost- effective, demonstrating economic benefits alongside agricultural and environmental advantages.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">Environmental Impact: Although a formal environmental assessment was not conducted, empirical evidence suggests biochar's positive impact on soil health, carbon sequestration, and reduced dependency on chemical fertilizers. Biochar aids in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions by sequestering carbon in soils, which helps reduce the overall carbon footprint of agricultural practices. Additionally, biochar improves water retention in soils, contributing to better resilience against climate variability.</span></span></p> <p style="text-align:justify"><span style="font-size:14px"><span style="font-family:times new roman,times,serif">This pilot project underscores the feasibility and advantages of biochar production and application in agriculture. The findings highlight biochar's potential to enhance soil fertility, increase crop yields, and promote environmental sustainability.
