His account is primarily found in the books of 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles.<br><br><b>Background and Early Life</b><br><br>Jehoiada was a high priest during the reigns of the kings of Judah. He was married to Jehosheba, the daughter of King Jehoram and sister of King Ahaziah. This connection to the royal family positioned Jehoiada uniquely to influence the course of Judah's history.<br><br><b>Preservation of the Davidic Line</b><br><br>Jehoiada's most notable act was his protection of Joash, the sole surviving heir of the Davidic line, from the murderous intentions of Queen Athaliah. After the death of King Ahaziah, Athaliah sought to exterminate the royal family to secure her power. Jehosheba, Jehoiada's wife, secretly rescued Joash, Ahaziah's infant son, and hid him in the temple for six years (<a href="/2_kings/11-2.htm">2 Kings 11:2-3</a>; <a href="/2_chronicles/22-11.htm">2 Chronicles 22:11-12</a>).<br><br><b>Coup Against Athaliah</b><br><br>In the seventh year, Jehoiada orchestrated a coup to overthrow Athaliah and place Joash on the throne. He gathered the commanders of hundreds, the Carites, and the guards, and made a covenant with them in the house of the LORD. Jehoiada presented Joash to them and secured their loyalty to the rightful king (<a href="/2_kings/11-4.htm">2 Kings 11:4-12</a>; <a href="/2_chronicles/23.htm">2 Chronicles 23:1-11</a>).<br><br>Jehoiada's plan was successful. Athaliah was executed, and Joash was anointed king. The people of Judah rejoiced, and the city was at peace (<a href="/2_kings/11-13.htm">2 Kings 11:13-20</a>; <a href="/2_chronicles/23-12.htm">2 Chronicles 23:12-21</a>).<br><br><b>Religious Reforms</b><br><br>Jehoiada was instrumental in leading religious reforms in Judah. He renewed the covenant between the LORD, the king, and the people, committing them to be the LORD's people. He also led the destruction of the temple of Baal, its altars, and images, and executed Mattan, the priest of Baal (<a href="/2_kings/11-17.htm">2 Kings 11:17-18</a>; <a href="/2_chronicles/23-16.htm">2 Chronicles 23:16-17</a>).<br><br>Under Jehoiada's guidance, the temple of the LORD was restored, and the proper worship of Yahweh was reestablished. As long as Jehoiada lived, Joash did what was right in the eyes of the LORD (<a href="/2_kings/12-2.htm">2 Kings 12:2</a>; <a href="/2_chronicles/24-2.htm">2 Chronicles 24:2</a>). Jehoiada's mentorship and guidance were crucial in maintaining the spiritual and political stability of Judah during Joash's early reign.<br><br><b>Death and Legacy</b><br><br>Jehoiada lived to a ripe old age and was honored with a burial among the kings in the City of David, a testament to his significant contributions to the kingdom (<a href="/2_chronicles/24-15.htm">2 Chronicles 24:15-16</a>). However, after his death, Joash's fidelity to the LORD waned, and he succumbed to the influence of other advisors, leading to a decline in the spiritual state of the nation (<a href="/2_chronicles/24-17.htm">2 Chronicles 24:17-19</a>).<br><br>Jehoiada's life and actions underscore the importance of godly leadership and the impact of faithful service to God and His people.
