Martin Scorsese and, for some, it is even the best movie ever made. Personally, I think it is probably the first flick directed by Scorsese that I saw. Back then, I must been have 15-16 years old and, indeed, I thought it was just awesome. Whereas I had to watch the Godfather at least twice before I was really able to enjoy it, I loved this movie right away. Indeed, the whole thing was just full of energy and adrenaline, filled with conflicted and fascinating characters. Basically, it is a great movie and of course one of the best movies directed by Martin Scorsese. Still, as I grow older I must admit that, in the same genre, I tend to enjoy more The Godfather flicks than this one because they are more subtle and more cerebral in my opinion but it remains a great movie. The whole thing is just plain entertaining and completely fascinating and unfortunately, once again, back then, Martin Scorsese was ignored by the academy and, instead, the decent but not really great 'Dances with the wolves' ended up with the big prize. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/9.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype1878movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='8628' data-itemid='22916970'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/angel-my-table'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/267/26669267.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="An Angel at My Table" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 120 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (67 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (67 ratings)'/> 7.4 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/angel-my-table'>An Angel at My Table</a> (1990) </div> </div> <div id='text_22916970' class='text listnote' data-itemid='22916970' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1691762"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1691762/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Recently, I watched ‘Top of the Lake’ with my wife and even though it wasn’t really flawless, there was something quite spellbinding about this TV-show and it was a great reminder of why Jane Campion is (or at least used to be) one of the most interesting directors in the world. First of all, even though it was a critical success, I actually had a hard time to care for ‘Sweetie’, Campion’ s directing debut. However, this 2nd directing effort was just mind-blowing. I have to admit that I never heard of Janet Frame before watching this movie but, apparently, it was the case for most of the viewers. Anyway, I thought it was a really fascinating and heartbreaking story. Indeed, I have always been interested in movies dealing with mental illness and this movie must be one of the best I have seen about this subject. By the way, what happened to Kerry Fox? After this movie, she would show up in ‘Shallow Grave’ and ‘Intimacy’ but the rest of her career would have been filled with some rather obscure features. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype26310movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='10' data-itemid='23762253'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/edward-scissorhands'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/534/17220534.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Edward Scissorhands" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 8588 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (6138 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (6138 ratings)'/> 7.7 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.9 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/edward-scissorhands'>Edward Scissorhands</a> (1990) </div> </div> <div id='text_23762253' class='text listnote' data-itemid='23762253' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/696842"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/696842/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> This movie was the start of a very prolific relationship between Johhnny Depp and Tim Burton and for many viewers, it is, so far, the best movie directed by Tim Burton. It was also the rebirth of Johnny Depp who was back then struggling with his teenage heartthrob image but with this flick, he made it clear he wanted something else in his career. From then on, he became one of the most excentric, original and fascinating actors (a box-office poison according to the major studio producers). But everything changed because of Captain Jack Sparrow... Since then, Depp has become the box-office king for a while but I'm afraid his new movies, even though they were maybe hugely popular, were not really interesting compared to what he did before in the 90's. Anyway, his first movie with Tim Burton was pretty awesome. I think I enjoyed 'Big Fish' a little more but it is definitely a close call. Basically, the story was some kind of twisted fairy tale, the whole thing looked gorgeous and Depp gave one of his best performances. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype5404movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='628' data-itemid='24089667'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/total-recall'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/354/19934354.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Total Recall" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 2427 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (1678 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (1678 ratings)'/> 7.1 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/total-recall'>Total Recall</a> (1990) </div> </div> <div id='text_24089667' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24089667' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/951386"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/951386/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> As a kid, I really loved this flick. Seriously, I must have been around 12 years old the first time I watched the damned thing. I remember it very well, back then, I thought it was a fascinating story and, in fact, I had to watch it a couple of times before understanding it properly (give me a break... I was a just a kid!). The best thing about this movie was that it worked on so many levels. Indeed, it was entertaining, it took place on Mars, there were tons of nice special effects, some sexual tension and a rather thoughtful and intriguing plot. By now, I have watched all the movies directed by Paul Verhoeven (even the old Dutch ones) and this one remains one of his best. I just love the story, the actions scenes and the competent special effects. I have seen also most of Schwarzenegger's work and it is my favorite movie he has done. Many years laters, I did watch the remake starring Colin Farrell and even though Farrell is actually a better actor, Schwarzenegger was actually more convincing. It worked better also because Paul Verhoeven didn't spend all his time with some action scenes but also gave us some time to get know Doug Quaid and root for the guy. Anyway, I really loved the original version from the Dutch master. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype4632movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1459' data-itemid='24350370'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/millers-crossing'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/766/151766.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Miller's Crossing" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1137 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (699 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (699 ratings)'/> 7.8 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/millers-crossing'>Miller's Crossing</a> (1990) </div> </div> <div id='text_24350370' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24350370' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1657176"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1657176/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> If you are a Coen fan, you ought to see this movie. The attention to the details, the weird characters, the dark humor, the slow tempo, it has everything and it is a very typical Coen flick. For the Coen brothers, it is when they really started to get serious. Indeed, ‘Blood Simple’ and ‘Raising Arizona’ were both pretty good and they both became eventually cult-classics but they were rather modest when you consider the scale and, with this flick, you could see that the two siblings were getting quite ambitious. Basically, it is a gangster flick with a rather slow pace but it is a great mix combining the Coen brothers directing style with the gangster-prohibition genre. Personally, each time I watch this flick, I enjoy it even more but, with its rather slow pace, I still believe it is an acquired taste. The cast was also pretty terrific with an all-time best performance by Gabriel Byrne but the rest of the cast was really solid as well (Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro, Albert Finney, Steve Buscemi). Anyway, even if this feature seems to be a little bit forgotten, I think it is actually one of their best movies. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype15206movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='828' data-itemid='24455781'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/misery-1990'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/088/152088.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Misery" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 2110 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (1423 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (1423 ratings)'/> 7.5 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.8 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/misery-1990'>Misery</a> (1990) </div> </div> <div id='text_24455781' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24455781' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/3250235"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/3250235/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. First of all, to be honest, I'm not a big fan of Stephen King, neither the books or the movies. But, fortunately, a few of these adaptations turned out to be really good and this movie was definitely one of them. In fact, for Rob Reiner, it would be his 2nd acclaimed Stephen King feature following the critical success of ‘Stand by Me’ (such a shame the guy has lost his touch as he hasn't done anything remotely amazing during the last 20 years). Coming back to our main feature, the story was just quite spellbinding and Kathy Bates gave a really chilling performance. Eventually, it will be her breakthrough and she would become the first woman to win an Oscar for the Best Actress in a horror/thriller feature. Eventually, the big difference between this story and the usual tales written by Stephen King is that most of it is actually grounded in reality which made it, at least for me, much easier to relate to and to believe in the characters and what they were going through. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype2947movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='3898' data-itemid='25378072'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/days-of-being-wild'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/753/8862753.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Days of Being Wild (1990)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 370 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (224 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (224 ratings)'/> 7.4 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.4 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/days-of-being-wild'>Days of Being Wild (1990)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_25378072' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25378072' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/3182128"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/3182128/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, as usual with Wong Kar Wai, I still ended up with some mixed feelings. I mean, there is no doubt that he always delivered his best work when focusing on such doomed love stories and, once again, the cinematography from Christopher Doyle (who was working with Wong Kar Wai for the first time around) was quite mesmerising. On top of that, Leslie Cheung delivered a really strong performance playing one of the most fascinating tortured womaniser I have ever seen. And yet, I was never swept away by the whole thing. I mean, even though Cheung was really good, his character was borderline despicable but even though some of the other characters seemed to be more righteous, I still didn't care much for them either. It was also pretty weird to see Tony Leung showing up completely randomly during the very last scene but his character was apparently supposed to be the lead in a second part which was never produced. Anyway, even if it didn't really blow me away, it was still pretty good and it is definitely worth a look. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype21965movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='3984' data-itemid='25542805'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/cyrano-de-bergerac-1990'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/974/151974.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Cyrano de Bergerac" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 312 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (182 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (182 ratings)'/> 7 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/cyrano-de-bergerac-1990'>Cyrano de Bergerac</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_25542805' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25542805' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1280696"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1280696/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this movie and maybe I should re-watch it at some point. In France, it is a massive classic and it was a big critical and commercial success when it was released. Indeed, it was a prestigious production involving the adaptation of a French literary classic with Gérard Depardieu in the title role. The guy gave here eventually one of the most unforgettable performances of his career (he was even nominated for the Academy Awards, something really rare for a performance in a foreign language). And yet, even though I did enjoy it, I can’t say it really blew me away though. Indeed, to be honest, the whole thing was, in my opinion, in fact a rather silly story when you think about it. I mean, if you would strip the great costumes, the decors, the dialogues, the actors, you would get something closer to ‘Roxanne’ which was rather cringe-inducing to behold, at least, as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, even if I wasn’t really a big fan, it was still a really solid period drama though. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype17844movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='152' data-itemid='26284537'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/pretty-woman-1990'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/733/27639733.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Pretty Woman" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 4093 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (2706 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (2706 ratings)'/> 6.6 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.1 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/pretty-woman-1990'>Pretty Woman</a> (1990) </div> </div> <div id='text_26284537' class='text listnote' data-itemid='26284537' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/4900773"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/4900773/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I have notived that this movie usually gets some rather extreme reactions and, basically, some people really love it and some others think it is downright awful. Obviously, from a certain point of view, it must be one of the most preposterous depictions of prostitution that you will ever get to see and the whole thing was so sugar-coated, it is sometimes rather difficult to digest. But, on the other hand, the fans love it because it is a romantic-comedy with a fantasized version of prostitution in which the hooker is really hot and rather healthy looking and the client is filthy rich and a gentleman. To be honest, even though I always had a weak spot for romantic-comedies, I never been a huge fan of this flick but I have to admit that, if you turn off your brain before watching this movie, it is actually fairly enjoyable thanks to some really charismatic leads. Indeed, 10 years after ‘American Gigolo’, Richard Gere was back again as a massive sex-symbol and, for Julia Roberts who was just about 23 years old at the time, it was obviously a star making performance. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/6.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype3616movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='565' data-itemid='26018145'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/dances-with-wolves-1990'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/733/151733.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Dances with Wolves" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 2195 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (1375 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (1375 ratings)'/> 7.4 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/dances-with-wolves-1990'>Dances with Wolves</a> (1990) </div> </div> <div id='text_26018145' class='text listnote' data-itemid='26018145' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/5156760"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/5156760/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Well, even though I thought it was pretty neat when I was a kid, to be honest, I don't think it did grow old very well. I mean, it is a really solid epic Western with a really uplifting soundtrack but the damned thing is also so sweet and romantic, I almost feels like a classic Disney family feature. Indeed, even though it was a Revisionist Western and even though it did reverse the usual stereotypes in this genre, it was nonetheless still seriously stereotypical. Basically, this time around, the white people were all described as mean, ignorant and violent, while all the Indians were described as gentle, wise and peaceful. But the best of them would be eventually John Dunbar who was at first the best white man around and then, also the best Indian around. I mean, the guy was something, he was handsome, charming, good with the animals and kids,... Even during the buffalo hunting scene, he was again the very best around, beating the Indians at their own ancestral tradition. The weird thing was that the guy was in fact a soldier who left his post and duty to live with the Indians. He even gave them all the guns he had. Can you imagine if, nowadays, an American soldier in Irak would go AWOL to go living with the locals as a Muslim giving them also a whole stash of weapons in the process? I wonder if he would then be considered such a hero. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/6.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype1075movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1202' data-itemid='22276666'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/delicatessen-1991'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/489/152489.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Delicatessen" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1283 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (727 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (727 ratings)'/> 7.5 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/delicatessen-1991'>Delicatessen</a> (1991) </div> </div> <div id='text_22276666' class='text listnote' data-itemid='22276666' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1425564"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1425564/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I’m not sure if this movie has a big reputation abroad but, in France, it is definitely considered as a massive cult-classic. Back in those days, there was no ‘Jean-Pierre Jeunet’ but only ‘Caro &amp; Jeunet’, at least, that’s how they were known in France at the time. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, it seriously exceeded my expectations, something that sadly doesn’t happen very often these days, and I was just quite blown away by the whole thing. Indeed, first of all, it is just a very original movie, above all, visually, but it went beyond that. Indeed, I really liked this story which was some kind of dark fairy tale with some rather messed-up characters. Eventually, Caro &amp; Jeunet would work again together for ‘La cité des enfants perdus’, another very interesting French cult-classic, and they had a big budget this time but it would be the last movie they would make together which is too bad. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/9.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype28487movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1114' data-itemid='23122148'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/jfk'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/301/29422301.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="JFK" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1348 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (842 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (842 ratings)'/> 7.4 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/jfk'>JFK</a> (1991) </div> </div> <div id='text_23122148' class='text listnote' data-itemid='23122148' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1448884"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1448884/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Honestly, it has been a while since I have seen this flick. I think it must have been 18-20 years ago. Frankly, I didn't really care a lot at the time about this historical murder but since I grew wiser, I thought I should re-watch it. Anyway, after 'Platoon', it is probably the most heralded picture directed by Oliver Stone and easily the most controversial one. Indeed, back in those days, Stone still had some balls, especially compared to the rather friendly 'W.' and above all compared to the terribly mushy 'World Trade Center'. Even if you put aside the controversial aspect of the subject, it still remain a fascinating and really entertaining flick. Plus, Oliver Stone had a great cast at this disposal (Kevin Costner, Jack Lemmon, Vincent D'Onofrio, Gary Oldman, Sissy Spacek, Joe Pesci, Walter Matthau, Tommy Lee Jones, John Candy, Kevin Bacon, Donald Sutherland, Martin Sheen). The greatest achievement, in my opinion, is that they managed to take a major page of history, shading some lights on these very dark times and also entertain the viewer at the same time. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype2368movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='4731' data-itemid='23130865'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/hearts-darkness-filmmakers-apocalypse'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/378/7247378.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 327 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (168 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (168 ratings)'/> 8 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.1 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/hearts-darkness-filmmakers-apocalypse'>Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse</a> (1991) </div> </div> <div id='text_23130865' class='text listnote' data-itemid='23130865' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1606482"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1606482/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> It must be the ultimate making-of and it is not very often that a making-of is released as a stand-alone feature like this one (another example is ‘Lost in La Mancha’ ). Of course, ‘Apocalypse Now’ is a really impressive movie, one of the many masterpieces directed by Francis Ford Coppola in the 70’s (Man, the guy was really on fire back in those days!) and we all heard about the rumors surrounding the hellish shooting but it was just really awesome to have a full length feature telling us all the dirty and (very often) crazy details. An interesting thing about this flick is that even though the production is really messed up and, here, we are talking of a very different level of messed up, you still can get a very good movie or even a masterpiece, at least in this case. In my opinion, the best way to go is to first watch ‘Apocalypse Now’, then watch this documentary and then again ‘Apocalypse Now’ or maybe even the Redux version. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype29232movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='2366' data-itemid='23933498'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-double-life-of-veronique'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/079/62079.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Double Life of Véronique" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 734 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (394 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (394 ratings)'/> 8 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-double-life-of-veronique'>The Double Life of Véronique</a> (1991) </div> </div> <div id='text_23933498' class='text listnote' data-itemid='23933498' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/4100841"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/4100841/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Sometimes, I do wonder if Krzysztof Kieslowski is really famous among the Listal users and that's a shame because he is responsible of some of the most striking movies of the 90's and 80's. I can’t believe he passed away already 20 years ago and, in fact, I should myself watch many more of his movies. On top of that, I was probably too young to really appreciate his Three colors trilogy and I hope I will give it a second chance at some point in the future. Right now, I actually preferred this one which is my favorite of his movies so far. Indeed, I thought this tale was just mesmerizing. I have to confess that probably most of the symbolism went over my head but I just loved the mood and I felt a great connection with this story and the characters involved (something I was slightly missing with the Three colors trilogy). Concerning Irène Jacob, back then, it seemed that she would become the next great French actress but aside from the massive 2 classics she made with this great master, her career turned out to be rather underwhelming after all. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype28586movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='716' data-itemid='26092496'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/basic-instinct'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/908/19003908.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Basic Instinct" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 2058 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (1288 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (1288 ratings)'/> 6.3 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/basic-instinct'>Basic Instinct</a> (1992) </div> </div> <div id='text_26092496' class='text listnote' data-itemid='26092496' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/7586018"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/7586018/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Well, this movie was unfortunately Paul Verhoeven’s last success in the US and everything he made afterwards in American didn’t really work. And, of course, this feature also turned Sharon Stone into a major star but it’s such a pity that almost everything she did afterwards was eventually really underwhelming, ‘Casino’ being one of the very few exceptions. Coming back to our main feature, well, even though this movie has a rather solid reputation, to be honest, I always had some rather mixed feelings about the damned thing. Sure, I have to admit it, the first half was actually quite awesome. Indeed, it was basically some kind of really steamy Hitchockian thriller and it was quite spellbinding to watch. Indeed, the story was really entertaining and Micheal Douglas and Sharon Stone had some great chemistry together. Unfortunately, the second half didn’t work really well in my opinion. Indeed, as far as I was concerned, it was just a succession of non-sensical and more or less shocking scenes. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/6.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype344movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='100' data-itemid='24129832'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/terminator-2-judgment-day'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/295/17049295.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Terminator 2: Judgment Day" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 5382 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (3810 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (3810 ratings)'/> 7.8 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.6 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/terminator-2-judgment-day'>Terminator 2: Judgment Day</a> (1991) </div> </div> <div id='text_24129832' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24129832' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/11785683"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/11785683/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Is this sequel better than its predecessor ? Difficult to say but it is definitely a worthy sequel. I remember it so well, I actually saw this damned thing with my father when it came out. Seriously, I must have been 12 years old and, back then, it just blew me away. On top of that, the character of John Connor made it really easy to get into the story since I was about the same age. Many years later, I watched this movie again with my step-son and, once again, I was really impressed. In fact, the story was almost identical to the first movie but they have added so many new elements so it didn't bother me whatsoever. This time, James Cameron had a huge budget (in fact, it was the most expensive movie ever made at that time) and it clearly shows on the screen. Indeed, you had here some groundbreaking special effects and some really kick-ass action scenes. Once again, the story was a mix of despair, funny scenes with some great oneliners and even some interesting bonding between Sarah Connor, John Connor and the Terminator. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype4481movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='2170' data-itemid='24536750'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/boyz-n-hood'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/714/69714.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Boyz n the Hood (1991)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 875 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (574 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (574 ratings)'/> 7.3 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.8 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/boyz-n-hood'>Boyz n the Hood (1991)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_24536750' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24536750' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1110865"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1110865/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, it has been a while since I saw this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Anyway, there was a time, in the 90’s, when there was some kind of wave of movies dealing with the black ghettos in the US and, from all these movies, this must be the most famous one they made. In fact, in this genre, I always preferred ‘Menace II Society’ which was even bleaker but there is no doubt that this movie was really good as well. Indeed, it was a realistic and heartbreaking take on the harsh reality of living in one of these neighborhoods, something that didn’t much change during the following 30 years. Back then, John Singleton became, at 24 years old, the youngest person ever to be nominated for the Best Director Academy Award and, even though many thought he had a bright future ahead (including myself), his career turned out to be eventually only decent at best. Another disappointment was also the career of Cuba Gooding Jr. who would win an Academy Award 4 years later but, then, he would spend most of his time afterwards showing up in some really weak movies. Anyway, coming back to our main feature, after all these years, it is still a powerful drama though. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype636movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1737' data-itemid='24571073'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/my-own-private-idaho-1991'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/489/1014489.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="My Own Private Idaho" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1064 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (571 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (571 ratings)'/> 7 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/my-own-private-idaho-1991'>My Own Private Idaho</a> (1991) </div> </div> <div id='text_24571073' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24571073' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1014468"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1014468/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, it has been ages since I have this seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. Basically, it is one of those movies that I saw as a teenager which just had some huge impact on me. I mean, back in those days, I was already fascinated by movies but I hadn’t watch so many great movies yet so I was basically a blank page, ready to absorb pretty much anything. Anyway, I had never seen anything like this before and, at the time, I thought the whole thing was quite mesmerizing to behold. Through the years, I always enjoyed Gus van Sant's work and it must be one of his most typical movies. Concerning Keanu Reeves, even if you like him or not, he would keep a steady career ever since showing up in such massive classics like ‘The Matrix’ or some more dubious choices such as ‘Chain Reaction’. Above all, this movie would be always linked to River Phoenix, one of the most highly regarded young actors of his generation who would tragically die just a couple of years after working on this movie. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype23379movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1257' data-itemid='24920657'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/barton-fink'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/685/69685.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Barton Fink" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1333 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (770 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (770 ratings)'/> 7.6 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/barton-fink'>Barton Fink</a> (1991) </div> </div> <div id='text_24920657' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24920657' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1451261"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1451261/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Even though this movie seems to be overlooked nowadays, it was actually another critical success for the Coen brothers. Indeed, they even managed to win the Golden Palm at the Cannes film festival. Well, to be honest, even though I thought it was not bad, I actually always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. In fact, I even watched it a couple of times to make up my mind for good, to make sure I didn't miss anything the first time around but I still ended up with the same feeling. Basically, in my opinion, it must be the least accessible movie made by the Coen brothers so far, even more than 'A Serious Man' which was already terribly obscure. I mean, it is definitely a good movie with an interesting mood and some typical Coen characters but I can't say I was blown away by the whole thing. It is not very often that I came across a movie like this one which seemed to be about something deep and, yet, I wasn’t able at all to grasp what those guys were trying to achieve here. Anyway, even though it didn’t really work for me, it was still a decent watch and it is definitely worth a look. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype15221movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='44' data-itemid='25844080'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-silence-of-the-lambs'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/789/17157789.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Silence of the Lambs (1991)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 6610 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (4645 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (4645 ratings)'/> 8.2 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.6 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-silence-of-the-lambs'>The Silence of the Lambs (1991)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_25844080' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25844080' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/329027"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/329027/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably rewatch it at some point. In fact, my wife is actually a huge fan of those thrillers involving serial-killers and I'm pretty sure this movie is her favorite one in this genre. Personally, I actually always had some mixed feelings about the damned thing. I mean, of course, it is a classic, it is very well made and entertaining and Anthony Hopkins was just great in a star making performance. And yet, this movie exactly embodies what bothers me in this genre. Indeed, while my wife might argue that those things actually really happens in real life, I tend to roll my eyes in pure disbelief during the whole thing. The worst gimmick in this genre, in my opinion and aside of the obligatory twist ending, is the whole concept of the omnipotent serial killer who hears and sees pretty much everything, can apparently predict the future and has access to a limitless amount of cash. I mean, don't misunderstand me, I do like this movie, it is really entertaining but, in my opinion, even though it might be the best movie in this genre, it still uses some of his worst tricks and therefore it makes it difficult for me to be completely blown away by the whole thing. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype4106movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='3265' data-itemid='25910415'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/raise-red-lantern'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/145/20646145.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Raise the Red Lantern (1991)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 455 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (235 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (235 ratings)'/> 8 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.1 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/raise-red-lantern'>Raise the Red Lantern (1991)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_25910415' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25910415' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/19617504"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/19617504/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, even though it was definitely an interesting watch, I can’t say it really blew me away though. I mean, as usual with Zhang Yimou, it was very well directed and visually really neat. Furthermore, Gong Li was once again so charismatic and gave also another strong performance. Eventually, I guess I hard a hard time to really care about this story which was definitely intriguing but never really spellbinding. I don’t know, maybe it was just too subtle for me and since the characters never really clearly stated their feelings, I had a hard time to really care about what they were going through. For example, at first, the main character seemed to be really distraught that her life was turned upside down after she was given away for a marriage she didn’t choose. However, as soon as she got in this mansion, she started to fight for her position but I didn’t really understand why. Indeed, her life was pretty much over, she would spend her whole life stuck in this place to be some kind of sex slave so why should she care about all this? Anyway, even if I didn’t really connect with this movie, it was still pretty good. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype28387movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='4116' data-itemid='25561144'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/howards-end-1992'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/498/76498.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Howards End" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 368 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (200 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (200 ratings)'/> 7.2 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.4 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/howards-end-1992'>Howards End</a> (1992) </div> </div> <div id='text_25561144' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25561144' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1700084"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1700084/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> There was a time when the James Ivory/Ismail Merchant team was the unbeatable champion in the British costume drama genre and this movie was definitely one of their biggest critical successes. Well, I was rather surprised by how little I actually remembered it and, to be honest, I wasn't exactly blown away while rewatching this flick. Indeed, in my opinion, it is such a rather convoluted story and I was wondering how all these characters were supposed to be connected with this plot. Basically, it was some kind of jigsaw puzzle and it took such a long time to reach its conclusion. On top of that, I always find it rather difficult to care about the so difficult life of the British upper-class. Still, when they are so well made like this one, it work just fine, even for me. Above all, there was a very strong cast (Vanessa Redgrave, Helena Bonham Carter, Emma Thompson, Anthony Hopkins). Back in those days, Anthony Hopkins just gave his breakthrough performance in ‘The Silence of the Lambs’ and Emma Thompson was definitely one of the most successful actresses so they were both at the top of their game (Thompson would eventually win the Academy Award for the Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in this movie). A year later, the very same team would work again with both Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins resulting in ‘The Remains of the Day’ which would be also critically acclaimed. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype2161movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1972' data-itemid='24845413'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/malcolm-x-1992'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/703/70703.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Malcolm X (1992)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 923 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (518 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (518 ratings)'/> 7.3 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/malcolm-x-1992'>Malcolm X (1992)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_24845413' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24845413' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1374103"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1374103/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> At the beginning of the 90’s, Spikee Lee was one of the most promising directors at work and this movie was definitely his most ambitious one. When I first saw this movie, I must have been 14-15 years old and, even though of course I had heard about the man, I must admit that I didn’t know much about Malcolm X and his ideas. Only therefore I thought it was already a fascinating picture. I mean, I have always been interested by politics so to have such an epic tale about one of the most notorious black American political figures was just really neat. Obviously, for Denzel Washington who just had his breakthrough a few years before with ‘Glory’, it was pretty much the role of his lifetime and many (including myself) think that, instead of rewarding him for ‘Training Day’, he should have won instead the Academy Award for this great performance. The tricky thing about this flick is that Spike Lee greatly admired the man and, therefore, the subject was maybe too close to him and he didn’t dare being more critical towards this historical figure. Anyway, even though the whole thing was slightly too straightforward, it was still a really solid biopic, </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype2787movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='2729' data-itemid='24722971'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-player-1992'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/618/24832618.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Player" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 646 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (378 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (378 ratings)'/> 7.4 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-player-1992'>The Player</a> (1992) </div> </div> <div id='text_24722971' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24722971' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1518553"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1518553/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I have to admit that I still have to check most of Robert Altman’s older movies but from all the movies I have seen directed by this master so far, it remains by far my favourite one. It seems to be a little bit forgotten nowadays but I think it’s a shame because it is actually quite a spellbinding thriller. Eventually, since it was a big critical success at the time, it launched a new successful phase for this director, a phase which lasted until the end of his career. To be honest, after re-watching the damned thing, even if I still liked it, I have to admit that I was slightly less impressed than 20 years ago. I mean, the story was still terribly entertaining, I loved the directing but, eventually, I had a hard time to care about the characters this time around. I mean, the characters were entertaining enough but, eventually, not really interesting after all and actually barely defined. The best example would be June Gudmundsdottir, played by the lovely Greta Scacchi. Indeed, why would this intriguing woman would fall for such a weasel? Eventually, in my opinion, her behaviour seemed to be more plot-driven than actually really organic. Anyway, even if it was maybe not flawless, I still think it is underrated gem. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype3558movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='3151' data-itemid='26140778'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/man-bites-dog'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/525/22918525.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Man Bites Dog" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 570 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (283 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (283 ratings)'/> 7.5 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/man-bites-dog'>Man Bites Dog</a> (1992) </div> </div> <div id='text_26140778' class='text listnote' data-itemid='26140778' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/2636923"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/2636923/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should probably re-watch it at some point. Anyway, I remember it very well when it was released In France. Indeed, at the time, there was a lot of buzz around this movie and it quickly became a huge cult classic. Apparently, it also reached some international recognition. With this in mind, I had some really high expectations before watching the damned thing but, to be honest, I thought it was really disappointing. I mean, I have to admit it, the whole thing really had some potential, it started pretty well, it was a little bit like ‘Spinal Tap’ but instead of some hard rockers, you had a serial killer and it had some pitch black humor. But after a while, the jokes got worse and worse with 2 top moments, one when the main character goes to a restaurant to eat some mussels and eventually throws everything up (this scenes lasted like 20 minutes...) and one of the final scenes when the guy rapes a woman... Eventually, I really had a hard time to care for the whole thing. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/5.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype11796movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='10149' data-itemid='24123605'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-story-of-qiu-ju'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/167/220167.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Story of Qiu Ju (1992)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 99 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (49 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (49 ratings)'/> 7.5 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-story-of-qiu-ju'>The Story of Qiu Ju (1992)</a> (1992) </div> </div> <div id='text_24123605' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24123605' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/21329333"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/21329333/500full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='500' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> If I recall correctly, this is the first movie I saw with Gong Li in it. Personally, I have always been fascinated by this actress and it’s too bad that only quite late in her career, she eventually decided to play in some Western movies. Indeed, she waited for a long time before taking this decision and it was even more saddening that none of those movies ever reached the level of her Asian productions such as this flick. Here, she gave an impressive perfomance and the directing was very good too. Above, I thought that the story seemed quite realistic and it was just really captivating at the same time. One really interesting aspect in this movie is the way it displayed the massive contrasts in China. Indeed, even though it is a really modern country, even a world power with its huge population, yet, in the countryside, it is as if the time has stopped as they are still living as if it was 200 years ago. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype6035movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='2534' data-itemid='24030562'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/glengarry-glen-ross-1992'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/639/2737639.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Glengarry Glen Ross" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 731 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (464 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (464 ratings)'/> 7.4 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/glengarry-glen-ross-1992'>Glengarry Glen Ross</a> (1992) </div> </div> <div id='text_24030562' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24030562' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/9205794"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/9205794/500full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='500' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. First of all, I have to point out that, even though I have seen many movies written by David Mamet or based on his work, I can’t say I have really been blown. This movie is however the exception. Indeed, it was based on his Pulitzer prize winning drama and the whole thing was simply just spellbinding to behold. Indeed, the concept was in fact pretty simple and the whole idea was to have a bunch of great actors (Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Jonathan Pryce) put together delivering some of the best dialogues ever written. To make things even more intriguing, it all took in a really realistic and rather mundane spot, a real estate office, and the fact that I have absolutely no feeling whatsoever for this kind of profession made the whole thing even more spellbinding to me. In this messed up little world, you’re either a winner or a massive loser and you would just need a couple of failures to become another black sheep. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype12265movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='96' data-itemid='22484213'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/reservoir-dogs'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/566/16287566.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Reservoir Dogs" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 5286 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (3637 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (3637 ratings)'/> 8.1 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.3 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/reservoir-dogs'>Reservoir Dogs</a> (1992) </div> </div> <div id='text_22484213' class='text listnote' data-itemid='22484213' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/6769443"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/6769443/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> It might seem hard to believe but, for many many years, Quentin Tarantino was actually struggling to make his first movie. Eventually, after many failures, he came out with this feature and the rest is now history. I remember it very well when this movie came out, there was a huge buzz around this flick and, if I recall it correctly, it was released for a whole year in Paris in the movie theaters. Anyway, it had a huge impact and it is rightfully consider one of the best directing debuts ever made. In my opinion, it is actually still one of Tarantino's best movies and, as a matter of fact, I do think that he just went downhill from there. Indeed, in my opinion, this movie was such a success because Tarantino couldn't do everything he wanted at the time and he couldn't go on and on in his egotrip that has become most of his recent features. Basically, limited in space, time and money, he produced some of his best work and there was here some amazing writing, directing and acting. Harvey Keitel made with this movie a really impressive come-back here but the rest of the cast were just as amazing and they all provided some really strong performances. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/9.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype3789movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='2181' data-itemid='22298827'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-crying-game'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/708/63708.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Crying Game" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 739 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (444 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (444 ratings)'/> 7 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.3 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-crying-game'>The Crying Game</a> (1993) </div> </div> <div id='text_22298827' class='text listnote' data-itemid='22298827' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/2155588"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/2155588/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> It has been a while since I have seen this movie and I should really re-watch it at some point. On the other hand, I’m not sure if the whole thing would have the same impact if I knew what was going to happen. Anyway, I remember very well the first time I saw the damned thing. Indeed, somehow, I really didn’t know at all what it was about, I certainly didn’t know anything about the infamous twist occurring halfway through and I really didn’t see it coming at all. I remember it as if it was yesterday, I was with my one of my best buddies (who actually sadly passed away in 2016) and when the whole thing took place, we looked at each other completely flabbergasted (WTF?!?!) about what we just saw. It’s rather funny because I actually never really liked the usual twists in most of the thrillers but this one was, for me, completely unexpected. Basically, it is really weird movie which cannot be classified and it is is Neil Jordan's best movie so far. Indeed, the story was just really fascinating and so unexpected. What happened then? This movie happened and completely changed the outlook on this icon whose work as a director wasn't really taken seriously until that point. I mean, Eastwood had already made 3 Westerns so far ('High Plains Drifter', 'The Outlaw Josey Wales', 'Pale Rider') and even though they were all pretty good, this flick was easily the best Western directed by Eastwood. What was so great about this flick was not really the directing (which was really good), the acting (which was really good as well) or the story (which was really entertaining), in my opinion, it was the tone. Indeed, I loved how rather grim and gloomy the whole thing was and the way Eastwood blurred the frontier between good or bad was just brilliant. This movie was also the proof that the Academy can pick up sometimes a worthy winner for the best picture award. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype4750movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='2348' data-itemid='25351414'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/short-cuts-1993'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/432/322432.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Short Cuts (1993)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 676 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (354 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (354 ratings)'/> 7.6 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/short-cuts-1993'>Short Cuts (1993)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_25351414' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25351414' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1689216"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1689216/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I remember it pretty well, when it was released, there was a huge buzz and eventually it received some great reviews. So, following this and the fact I loved Robert Altman's previous movie ('The Player'), I was really eager to watch this movie. Unfortunately, I was rather disappointed. Still, since I was 14-15 years old when I watched it the first time around, I thought it needed a rewatch. Eventually, I enjoyed it a little bit more but, to be honest, I still didn't think it was anything really mind-blowing though. Basically, it is one of those hyperlink features with various characters and storylines which are more or less intertwined together. Back then, I thought it was a boring mess which was going nowhere. Nowadays, I'm more familiar with the whole hyperlink thing and I could appreciate more what Robert Altman was trying to pull here. Unfortunately, pretty much like 'Nashville', I didn't care much about the characters or what they were going through and, as a result, it was sometimes rather tedious to watch. Still, it was very well directed, there was a massive cast (Andie MacDowell, Jack Lemmon, Julianne Moore, Matthew Modine, Anne Archer, Fred Ward, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Chris Penn, Lili Taylor, Robert Downey Jr., Madeleine Stowe, Tim Robbins, Lily Tomlin, Tom Waits, Frances McDormand, Peter Gallagher, Lori Singer, Lyle Lovett) and they all gave some strong performances. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype4093movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1314' data-itemid='25658902'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/three-colors-blue'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/734/27606734.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Three Colours: Blue (1993)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1289 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (728 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (728 ratings)'/> 8 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.9 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/three-colors-blue'>Three Colours: Blue (1993)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_25658902' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25658902' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/445379"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/445379/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> It has been a while since I have watched this flick and, to be honest, I think I might have been too young when I first watched it. Indeed, at around 14 years old, I started to watch the major classics and I watched them ferociously at a very quick pace. The problem is that, even if a movie is great, sometimes, the timing is not right and it goes way over your head and I think that’s what happened to me with this flick. That’s the tricky thing about Krzysztof Kieslowski’s work, it is really interesting and intriguing, but not always really easy to digest, I’m afraid. I mean, it is full of symbolic and sub-text and, like I said before, I didn’t get much of it and it might need a re-watch at some point. Still, there is no doubt that Juliette Binoche (at the time, probably the greatest French actress at work) was very good, she gave one of her best performances and Kieslowski had a sober but effective directing style. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype13985movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='15' data-itemid='25267341'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/jurassic-park'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/508/9508.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Jurassic Park" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 8098 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (5903 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (5903 ratings)'/> 7.2 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.2 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/jurassic-park'>Jurassic Park</a> (1993) </div> </div> <div id='text_25267341' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25267341' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/733103"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/733103/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I must have been 13 or 14 years old when I saw this flick and I had the pleasure to see it in the movie theater when it was released. I must admit it, at the time, I was quite blown away by its visual aspect. I mean, back then, there wasn't such an overdose of CGI like today, back then it was something new and it was just downright impressive. Actually, there were just 6 minutes of CGI and the rest was animatronics, just to give you an idea about the fact that wall-to-wall CGI is absolutely not needed. Anyway, this movie definitely belongs to the biggest classics directed by Spielberg and it was the highest grossing movie ever made until 'Titanic' came out. Still, even though I was completely blown away by the special effects, I still can't say the same thing about the plot and the characters though. I mean, even though the whole thing was very entertaining and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat through most of the duration, it was still nothing extraordinary and all the characters were all really stereotypical and none of them was remotely interesting. But, damned, it was still awe inspiring to see for the very first time ever such realistic dinosaurs on the silver screen. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype5298movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='263' data-itemid='24681201'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/groundhog-day'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/279/21532279.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Groundhog Day (1993)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 3632 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (2497 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (2497 ratings)'/> 7.5 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/groundhog-day'>Groundhog Day (1993)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_24681201' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24681201' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1772846"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1772846/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I have to admit it, I always had a weak spot for romantic-comedies but it is a real shame that most of the movies in this genre are in fact terribly generic and underwhelming. Fortunately, there are a few exceptions out there and this movie was definitely one of them. First of all, even though I have always thought that Bill Murray was an interesting actor, to be honest, I never really cared for his movies. However, with this movie, they really found the perfect material for him. Obviously, like any other romantic-comedy, it was in fact all rather sweet, cheesy and predictable but what made this movie quite stand out from the rest was the main character perfectly played by Murray. Indeed, the guy was basically a major douche-bag and he made the whole thing so much more entertaining than the usual boring perfect man that they provide in this kind of movies. Furthermore, the whole concept was obviously rather preposterous but they handled it so well, it was just so much fun to behold and it was also a masterstroke to never explain how the main character endlessly kept reliving the same day. Finally, Andie MacDowell had never been more charming and she had some great chemistry with Murray. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype1941movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='3546' data-itemid='24542811'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/naked'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/421/2798421.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Naked (1993)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 606 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (294 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (294 ratings)'/> 8 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.7 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/naked'>Naked (1993)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_24542811' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24542811' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1831346"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1831346/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> To be honest, it has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely check it out again at some point. Anyway, even though Mike Leigh has a really stellar reputation and he is arguably one of the best British directors alive, I have to admit that I’m not always blown away by his movies. There are some exceptions though and this movie is definitely one of those. Indeed, it was with this movie that Leigh finally burst into the international scene and, even though his work would always be rather bleak, here, it was something really pitch black. The most memorable thing about this feature will always be the impressive performance by David Thewlis and it is rather unfortunate that he would be instead always remembered as one of those many British actors that showed up in the Harry Potter franchise as he gave here by far his best performance. Eventually, to really appreciate this movie, it all depends if you can handle Johnny, the main character. Indeed, he must be one of the most despicable and sinister main characters I have ever seen but I thought he was quite fascinating to behold. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype26308movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1167' data-itemid='24330663'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-piano'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/043/16258043.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Piano (1993)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1353 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (773 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (773 ratings)'/> 7.5 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-piano'>The Piano (1993)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_24330663' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24330663' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/7525904"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/7525904/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> It has been a while since I have seen this flick and I should definitely re-watch it at some point. I remember it quite well when this movie was released, it was critically acclaimed and even managed to win the prestigious Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. Anyway, I thought it was a rather unique movie with a mesmerizing mood. Indeed, the story was just fascinating, something I had never seen before, the directing by Jane Campion was very good and Holly Hunter easily gave the best performance of her career (she eventually won the Academy Award for the Best Actress, a prize completely deserved). Furthermore, back in those days, the great Harvey Keitel was making an impressive come-back thanks to his performance in ‘Reservoir Dogs’. He was one of my favorite actors at the time and he was really good in this movie as well, continuing his winning streak, it is a shame this renaissance didn’t last long and he is involved nowadays either in some weak blockbusters or some underwhelming obscure features. Concerning Jane Campion, even though she had an interesting career afterwards, she never reached such artistic heights again. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype3459movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='4239' data-itemid='24182080'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/menace-ii-society-1993'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/285/26269285.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Menace II Society" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 329 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (206 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (206 ratings)'/> 7.2 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/menace-ii-society-1993'>Menace II Society</a> (1993) </div> </div> <div id='text_24182080' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24182080' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1691463"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1691463/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> There are so many Hood movies, especially released back then in the 90's, and most of them are actually rather forgettable. However, there are a few exceptions and this movie is definitely one of them. Indeed, it turned out to be a great and heartbreaking movie and, in my opinion, it was even slightly better than 'Boyz n the hood' which is probably the most famous movie in this genre. I mean, both movies are really good and eventually 'Boyz n the hood' got a lot of attention whereas this movie went by pretty much unnoticed. I preferred this one because 'Boyz n the hood' ended up with a rather hopeful message while this movie was bleak and relentless from the beginning until the end and it made more sense to me. Indeed, for most of the people living in those ghettos, there is no happy ending at the end, just a lot of misery along the way. It is such a shame that the Hughes brothers, the guys who directed this movie, never managed to really break through afterwards. I mean, they still managed to direct a movie once in a while but none of them reached the level of their amazing debut. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype2881movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='3845' data-itemid='23868375'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/farewell-my-concubine'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/341/27788341.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Farewell My Concubine (1993)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 407 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (200 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (200 ratings)'/> 7.7 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.1 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/farewell-my-concubine'>Farewell My Concubine (1993)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_23868375' class='text listnote' data-itemid='23868375' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/3065384"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/3065384/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I remember very well when this movie was released. Back then, I was about 13-14 years, it was a big critical success and it even won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. And yet, even though I have always been eager to check this movie, it eventually took me more than 20 years to finally watch the damned thing. Well, to be honest, I have to admit that it turned out to be a tough watch though. Indeed, even though I have myself always been interested in Asian movies, it still struggled to connect with this tale which lasted almost 3 hours. Furthermore, it didn't help that the beginning was rather confusing and messy. Still, when it was finished, I had to admit that the whole thing was still a fascinating epic tale. I did remind me of 'Stage Beauty' which was made 10 years later but even though they both shared some elements, this movie was definitely from another level. Indeed, the scope was so much bigger, with so many layers, it was just fascinating to behold. It was also pretty neat to see a younger Gong Li at the height of her career (seriously, after all these years, she pretty much still look exactly the same). </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype1556movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='99' data-itemid='23755751'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-nightmare-before-christmas'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/359/28360359.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 5211 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (3583 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (3583 ratings)'/> 7.8 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.9 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-nightmare-before-christmas'>The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_23755751' class='text listnote' data-itemid='23755751' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1730915"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1730915/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I have seen this movie so many times, I even saw the damned thing in the movie theater when it was released and it has never lost its appeal. Basically, it is a gorgeous picture at the same time dark and bleak but also joyful and charming. However, it is slightly annoying that Tim Burton got most of the credit concerning this picture when in fact, Henry Selick is the one who actually directed the whole thing. Eventually, in my opinion, Henry Selick is the one responsible for his greatness whereas Tim Burton was too busy working on other projects to actually directing it ... Selick should be the one credited for this jewel, not Burton. Of course, I have to admit it, you can see Tim Burton's influence as he provided many sketches in order to create the characters. Anyway, it is one of the darkest fairy tales I have ever seen, it is very bold and you should probably don't show it to young children. Anyway, it is visually mind-blowing, the characters are fascinating and I even liked the songs . In this genre, it is the best movie of its kind. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype3198movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='65' data-itemid='23730647'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/schindlers-list'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/495/19923495.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Schindler's List (1993)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 5904 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (3742 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (3742 ratings)'/> 8.4 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 9 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/schindlers-list'>Schindler's List (1993)</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_23730647' class='text listnote' data-itemid='23730647' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/263122"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/263122/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Even if Steven Spielberg has definitely made many very entertaining flicks in the past , I always had been kind of annoyed by his movies because they are most of the times not challenging enough, or too &quot;nice&quot; for my taste (For example, 'ET' is a good movie but the alien and the children tend to get on my nerves). However, with this movie, Spielberg finally displayed his skills showing a terribly bleak and dark tale. Of course, you could say that Schindler is a little too heroic but you can't argue that Amon Goethe is one of the most despicable and yet fascinating bad guys seen on the silver screen. The directing was great, the cast was awesome and the story was completely heartbreaking. It was so good that the Academy finally HAD to give Spielberg his Oscar which he had been denied for so many years. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype18214movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='24' data-itemid='26101658'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-lion-king'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/719/21401719.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Lion King" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 7666 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (5419 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (5419 ratings)'/> 7.9 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-lion-king'>The Lion King</a> (1994) </div> </div> <div id='text_26101658' class='text listnote' data-itemid='26101658' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/950783"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/950783/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Almost 30 years ago, Disney was going through a glorious period. At the time, this movie was their biggest one and, for many years, it had been the highest grossing animated feature ever made. Back then, I saw it in the theater when it was released and it was pretty neat to re-watch it after all these years. Anyway, to be honest, I'm not exactly a huge fan and, from the same era, I think that 'Aladdin' (which was also a huge success when it was released but it has always been overshadowed by this classic) was actually much better. I mean, sure, it is definitely a solid feature, the animation was top-notch and, for once, Disney was creating something rather dark (the reason why my wife never really connected with this movie) almost creating a Shakespearean tragedy ('Hamlet' was a big inspiration for this tale). Still, somehow, I had a hard time to connect with the whole thing. Maybe because I didn't really like the combination of musical songs side by side with some rather dramatic material (the songs were also not really amazing) or maybe it was because it was taking itself too seriously? Still, even though it is not among my favorites, it remains a classic. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/6.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype17157movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='4' data-itemid='26008628'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/forrest-gump'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/436/9436.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Forrest Gump" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 9484 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (6980 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (6980 ratings)'/> 7.9 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.8 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/forrest-gump'>Forrest Gump</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_26008628' class='text listnote' data-itemid='26008628' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/447795"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/447795/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> It is basically one of those movies that has created through the years some pretty strong reactions. Indeed, on one hand, some people think that this movie is just great, a timeless classic and one of the best movies ever made while, on the other hand, there is a whole bunch of people who think that this movie is not that great all and that it is in fact one of the most overrated features ever made. Personally, I’m afraid I belong to the 2nd group. First of all, the main issue I always had with this movie was with its lead character, the infamous Forrest Gump. I mean, the guy is just so stupid and irritating! I know he is supposed to be touching and all but it didn't work for me at all. And the message it gives... &quot;it doesn't matter if you're stupid or defective, as long as you can play some ping-pong, you will be fine&quot;. I thought it was pretty bad and offensive towards mentally impaired people… I know many people see this film as some kind of fairy tale and I have been told so many times I shouldn't take it so seriously and I dig that but it just doesn't work for me. At least, I would have to admit that it is well made and fairly entertaining but not much more than that. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/6.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype7917movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='182' data-itemid='26007631'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/leon-the-professional'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/231/5633231.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Léon: The Professional" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 4650 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (3232 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (3232 ratings)'/> 8.2 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.5 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/leon-the-professional'>Léon: The Professional</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_26007631' class='text listnote' data-itemid='26007631' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/335247"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/335247/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> I actually remember very well when it was released in France. Back then, before it became an international cult classic, it was a huge success in France and virtually everyone went to see it and bragged about how awesome the whole thing was. Personally, I saw it maybe a year later after its release and I was expecting something really really impressive but, eventually, I was amazed about how underwhelming the whole thing was. I mean, obviously, it was actually not bad at all. Indeed, the directing was solid (Luc Besson can definitely direct a movie) and Natalie Portman in her first part was pretty impressive but I still don’t think that it was really amazing. The point is that the story definitely had some potential but, not only it felt rather rotten (the director's cut had actually some pedophile love scenes between Jean Reno and Natalie Portman) but, above all, it felt terribly pretentious. Honestly, most of the dialogues were at best cheesy and most of the time even rather pathetic. At least, I’m not the only one who didn’t like this flick and both Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel were rather dismissive towards the damned thing. Anyway, I have to admit that it is far from a being a bad movie but I simply don’t see what is supposed to be so great about it. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/6.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype3650movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1503' data-itemid='25937321'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/three-colors-red'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/628/20286628.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Three Colours: Red (1994)" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1120 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (588 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (588 ratings)'/> 8.2 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.1 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/three-colors-red'>Three Colours: Red (1994)</a> (1994) </div> </div> <div id='text_25937321' class='text listnote' data-itemid='25937321' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1743622"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1743622/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> First of all, Iréne Jacob kept reminding me of another actress and it took me a while to figure out that it was Claire Danes. I know, they don't actually really look a like but it had mostly to do with her silhouette and her body language which was just so similar to Claire Danes, at least, in my opinion. Anyway, in fact, it was just seriously distracting. Coming back to the movie itself, it has always been considered as the best movie in Krzysztof Kieslowski's heralded trilogy but, to be honest, I still think it is a rather tricky movie. Fortunately, I was more able to enjoy it the 2nd time around but I still struggled to connect with the damned thing though. Above all, it had to do with the fact that what Kieslowski tried to achieve with this movie still remained rather obscure to me. On top of that, to be honest, I don't think that the characters were really fascinating. Still, there is no doubt that Iréne Jacob and Jean-Louis Trintignant gave some strong performances and there was something really interesting in their relationship which was refreshingly platonic. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/7.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype13958movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='1958' data-itemid='24357124'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/chungking-express-1994'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/355/20034355.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Chungking Express" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 973 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (596 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (596 ratings)'/> 8.1 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/chungking-express-1994'>Chungking Express</a> (1994) </div> </div> <div id='text_24357124' class='text listnote' data-itemid='24357124' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/762943"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/762943/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> By now, I have seen all the movies directed by Wong Kar-Wai and, eventually, even though I have a great admiration for his work, I came to the conclusion that I’m actually not really a huge fan. This movie is however the exception though. Indeed, it was the very first movie I saw from this director, it definitely had a really strong impact on me and it is still by far my favorite. As usual with this director, it was a really gorgeous movie with a great sountrack and not one but two very mesmerizing love-stories. The 2nd tale was slightly better and, Tony Leung, who still is after all these years my favorite Asian actor, was as usual really strong in this movie. Eventually, this director was always more interested in the mood than telling an actual story and the whole thing was just quite fascinating to behold. Anyway, after all these years, I still love this movie and it remains one of my favorite romantic movies. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype10739movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='627' data-itemid='23891995'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/four-weddings-funeral'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/329/23878329.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Four Weddings and a Funeral" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 1944 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (1180 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (1180 ratings)'/> 6.5 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.1 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/four-weddings-funeral'>Four Weddings and a Funeral</a> (1994) </div> </div> <div id='text_23891995' class='text listnote' data-itemid='23891995' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/2346932"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/2346932/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Even though it tends to be underrated nowadays, it was actually pretty huge when it was released. If I recall it correctly, I even saw it a couple of times in the theater, once in French and than once again in English with subtitles. In my opinion, it is just a really awesome flick, it is probably my favorite romantic comedy ever and I have seen many romantic comedies, trust me. Anyway, thanks to this flick, Hugh Grant was able to reach stardom. I think he was just awesome in this movie and so was the rest of the cast, especially Andie McDowell and Kristin Scott-Thomas. Basically, it just has the perfect doses of humor and romance and it never goes for the cheap jokes. Furthermore, most of characters were very well written which was a major difference compared to your standard romantic comedy. Indeed, in this genre, the characters are usually not really believable, their actions are really plot-driven and, as a result, I usually don't care about them and what they are going through. Not here. Most of the characters were witty, funny and felt real and it made the whole thing so much more fun to watch. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype1688movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='8920' data-itemid='29152734'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/roseaux-sauvages-les-1994'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/865/20086865.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Wild Reeds" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 145 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (70 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (70 ratings)'/> 7.3 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 7.3 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/roseaux-sauvages-les-1994'>Wild Reeds</a> (1994) </div> </div> <div id='text_29152734' class='text listnote' data-itemid='29152734' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/20086900"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/20086900/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Note :</b> Even though this movie seems to be nowadays pretty much forgotten, I remembered very well when it was released in France. Indeed, in my my home country, it was a massive critical success (it even won the César of the Best French Film of the year) and there was a huge hype around the whole thing. Well, I have to admit that I didn't remember anything about this movie but, eventually, after a re-watch, I was so impressed by the damned thing, provably even more than the first time around. Indeed, when I first watched it, I was actually around the same age as the characters involved and, even if I did appreciate it at the time, I'm afraid it was too subtle for me. However, to watch it again almost 30 years later was actually quite emotional and even overwhelming. Indeed, I think it's a movie for a mature audience but, for me, it was also a whole word of recognition. Sure, I was born in the 80's but I was also born in a very small village in the French countryside and the everyday life and mood still looked quite similar. Furthermore, this time, I could really identify with this group of teenagers and with the complex feelings they struggled with. Indeed, André Téchiné managed to create a fascinating mood and those characters were all really 3 dimensional and felt so genuine. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/8.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype4925movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='16' data-itemid='22102557'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/pulp-fiction'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/622/19802622.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Pulp Fiction" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 8630 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (6218 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (6218 ratings)'/> 8.3 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.9 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/pulp-fiction'>Pulp Fiction</a> (1994) </div> </div> <div id='text_22102557' class='text listnote' data-itemid='22102557' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/20063350"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/20063350/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> When it was released, I must have been 14 or 15 years old and I saw it three times in the theatre, the 1st time in French and then twice in English. As a matter of fact, I have a rather nice anecdote about this. Indeed, it was the 1st time I saw an original version with subtitles and I was completely blown away by Bruce Willis's real voice. When I was just a kid, I used to watch 'Die Hard' with my dad and, in the French dub, they gave him this very specific high tuned squeaky voice. Suddenly, I was confronted with his real voice which was, of course, really deep and masculine. At that point, I realized that dubbed movies were actually really crappy and I'm so glad I live nowadays in the Netherlands were only animated features and children movies are dubbed. So, as far as I'm concerned, that was the first impact I got from this movie but, of course, it went way beyond that. For example, the whole hyperlink thing and the way the story was not chronologically told was just completely amazing. Of course, it wasn't the first time that those tricks were used but, back then, it was the first time I saw something like that and I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one. The point is that Tarantino managed to make an Artsy flick without making it dreary and, for once, you could watch something which was smartly built up and also having a great time watching it. What else should I add ? The music was great (one of the best selling soundtracks ever), the dialogues were awesome, the cast was awesome (with a major come-back for John Travolta) and the whole thing was just so damned entertaining to watch. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/10.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype3671movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='73' data-itemid='22272086'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-shawshank-redemption'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/319/154319.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="The Shawshank Redemption" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 6111 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (4342 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (4342 ratings)'/> 8.6 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 9.3 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/the-shawshank-redemption'>The Shawshank Redemption</a> </div> </div> <div id='text_22272086' class='text listnote' data-itemid='22272086' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/266791"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/266791/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Many people find it weird that this flick has been on the 1st place of the IDMDb 250 for so many years but even if you don't think that it is that good, you have to agree that this movie is definitely the stuff of legend. I mean, when it came out, almost nobody saw it. Eventually, it still managed to get 7 nominations at the Academy Awards but even there, it was snobbed and won nothing. Still, gradually, it gained a cult status and is now considered by many as the best movie ever made. Still, is it really the best movie ever made? Probably not. Is it one of the very best ? Absolutely! In its genre, I really believe it is quite untouchable. Basically, the directing is flawless, the story is fascinating and the cast was just great. 5 years later, Frank Darabont would direct another Stephen King adaptation, 'The Green Mile', and this time, it was not only critically heralded but it was also a smashing success at the box-office. Personally, I never really cared for 'The Green Mile' but I was happy that Darabont finally got a break and it is really too bad that he eventually managed to direct only 4 movies in 20 years. </div> <div> johanlefourbe's rating: <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/ratings/9.gif'/> </div><div id='currentlisttype4067movies' class='rateaddcustomlists notesviewactions'> <div class='pure-g'> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-7-24 pure-hidden-xs pure-hidden-sm'> </div> <div class='pure-u-1 pure-u-md-10-24'> </div> </div> </div> </div><div class='itembox notesrow' data-gpid='5533' data-itemid='22439586'> <div class='notesviewimage'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/hoop-dreams-1994'> <img src='https://lthumb.lisimg.com/261/11746261.jpg?width=130&sharpen=true' alt="Hoop Dreams" class='pure-img' /> </a> </div> <div class='title'> <div class='titlerating pure-hidden-xs'> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/listeditems.gif' title='People who added this item' alt='People who added this item'/> 266 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/rating.gif' title='Average listal rating (149 ratings)' alt='Average listal rating (149 ratings)'/> 8.1 </span> <span> <img src='https://i.listal.com/limages/misc/imdb_14.gif' title='IMDB Rating' alt='IMDB Rating'/> 8.3 </span> </div> <div class='titletitle listcounter'> <a href='https://www.listal.com/movie/hoop-dreams-1994'>Hoop Dreams</a> (1994) </div> </div> <div id='text_22439586' class='text listnote' data-itemid='22439586' data-isnewformat='0'> <a href="/viewimage/1633479"><img src="https://list.lisimg.com/image/1633479/400full.jpg" loading="lazy" width='400' /></a><br /> <br /> <b>Notes:</b> Since I keep hearing many good things about this flick and, eventually, I was seriously blown away by the whole thing. Indeed, the whole thing was just spellbinding to watch and it is definitely one of the best documentaries I have ever seen. Basically, it is a really amazing movie describing the harsh realities in America involving the life in the ghetto and what is at stake for the boys who get a shot at becoming a professional sportsman. At first, it seemed to be pretty straightforward and predictable but, then, what makes this movie really work is that the director followed these boys for 5 years and, as a result, you get really close to them and it became some kind of social drama of epic proportions. Somehow, this movie reminded me of ‘Boyhood’ which was a fictional feature directed by Richard Linklater which was also shot over 12 years following a boy from age 6 until he reached 18 years old.
