Since the sequel campaigns have these cyborg enemies and/or protagonists (I've only seen the portraits), I thought it could be a nice tie-in to suggest some of that technology on the visual of angered Eloh. I imagine that if that image were disrupted in some way, it would not reveal some true form lying beneath, it'd merely dissolve or something. That aside, her 'true form' is decidedly non-human, resembling a huge stationary container of pulsing blue/green ooze judging from the sprite. Whether that thing is an organic (albeit alien) lifeform, mechanical, or a combination of both, I don't know, but making Eloh cyborg-like would probably not be accurate.<br> <br> Considering how vastly different her 'true form' is from the image she shows the elves, I doubt you could hint at her true form in her portrait.<br> I second zookeper's idea about making the vine thingies bend into straight angles for the angry variant. If you want something metallic, then exaggerating the spikes on her headgear or replacing those blue elongated leaves (?) with daggers or something and making her more like a war-god of sorts might be interesting. Or making the portrait look more dissolved, like her form is dissipating into flames or smoke. This item is more accurately identified in AtS E3 as the “energy heart” of the Guardian of Darkness, Merthiaal, who came to be known as Yechnagoth “the Eater of Souls” after she did a thing that resulted in her world being completely wiped out and herself being offed by the original incarnation of Uria (henceforth Uria I) before things could escalate further.<br> <br> The energy heart is more akin to a symbiotic lifeform that becomes part of the god-like Guardians and essentially turns them into perpetual motion beings at some cost. The closest thing you get to a depiction of one in my canon so far is the Ruby of Fire, which in AtS is identified as having been <em class="text-italics">created from</em> a being that was part of another Guardian.<br> <br> While they are by default red and not externally-visible, the colour of the light they give off is actually specific to each Guardian because they’re colour-coded — Yechnagoth’s aura is the same colour as the sigil I drew for her, seen above. An energy heart going into overdrive would give its host aura-coloured glowing-vein-like features all over their body, extending from their chest. It should be rare for that to happen and a very bad sign for everyone within the vicinity of a Guardian creature, but Yechnagoth is unstable due to the fact that 1) she’s not in her original body; 2) she’s using a glorified prototype as her body; 3) she’s not mentally balanced in the first place, which is a big no-no for a Guardian creature.</div></div> The creatures seen at the end of UtBS do get additional screentime in IftU and AtS as the Verlissh. They are not particularly impressive on their own, but they are notably used to enable the reproduction of the biomechanical creatures also introduced in both campaigns, as well as a few other things.<br> <br> So hopefully at this point it’s clear that Yechnagoth used to be a fully organic lifeform. In UtBS she’s <em class="text-italics">almost completely</em> organic, although as others said she presents herself to Kaleh and the others through embellished projections.<br> <div style="margin:20px;margin-top:5px"><div class="quotetitle" style="vertical-align:middle;display:inline-block"><strong>Spoilers for After the Storm Episode III and the Untitled AtS Sequel:</strong> <input class="button1" style="font-size:0.8em" type="button" value="Show" onclick="if (this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display != '') { this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display = ''; this.value = 'Hide'; this.innerText = ''; } else { this.parentNode.parentNode.getElementsByTagName('div')[1].style.display = 'none'; this.value = 'Show'; this.innerText = ''; }"></div><div class="quotecontent" style="display:none">The non-organic parts of her real body are completely offscreen and they are only used to bind her soul and her heart together in a fully controlled fashion as a safeguard — she is actually working for Uria II in UtBS, and the latter generally makes sure her living weapons can be taken out of commission if they either become ineffective or decide to rebel against her.<br> <br> I needed to settle on Yechnagoth’s body being a multi-storey creature in order to explain why her energy heart survived the events of UtBS to be used again to empower a certain fire mage from UtBS that becomes a recurring enemy in IftU and the primary antagonist in AtS. It also makes sense owing to the fact that similar creatures seen throughout IftU and AtS spread across absolutely <em class="text-italics">ginormous</em> underground facilities.</div></div> What I haven’t explained yet is where Eloh, the deity she impersonates in UtBS, fits in all of this.<br> <br> Meta-speaking, “Eloh” does not exist in mainline canon until she’s introduced in UtBS. However, AtS rolls with the explanation that Eloh <em class="text-italics">is</em> known before the Fall, except that she is a deity that left Irdya long before elves came to exist in the first place. Some readers might know her from Nemaara’s campaign, Genesis, since she doesn’t get a lot of mentions in AtS and none in IftU. As the story goes, the whole reason Merthiaal became Yechnagoth was out of jealousy towards her and Uria I — hence she has a bone to pick with the denizens of Irdya, in particular elves and other faerie-like races, and this is why she is willing to serve Uria II for as long as is necessary to get her vengeance on them.<br> <br> The Quenoth elves conflate her with Elynia, who has (or used to have, as she loses them at the end of IftU) her own special kind of godlike powers which she used to confront Zhangor in Wesmere, aided by the Master of Darkness. The feat they accomplished together was significant enough to warrant the story being repeatedly distorted in retellings. It’s also supposed to be a combination of time, lack of means to keep accurate historical records, probably quite a number of tragedies that resulted in their population suffering heavy loses, and the fact that their priests were <strong class="text-strong">required</strong> to cover up the actual story behind Zhangor and the events that took place in Wesmere, and <strong class="text-strong">not</strong> keep written records of them. Zhul does say in UtBS that pretty much no-one is allowed to know about Zhangor, which is the whole reason why Yechnagoth bringing it up to Kaleh — who didn’t know about him at the time — sets off a few alarms.</div></div> At some point I considered working on extending the UtBS boss battle to make Yechnagoth’s projection take on two different forms besides the version of Eloh conceived by the Quenoth elves: a version closer to Elynia in appearance and thus completely alien to the Quenoth elves (except that would open up a plot hole in AtS E1 where the Quenoth elves still do not recognize Elynia about 360 years later), an adult version of her original form, and finally the undisguised creature we’re all familiarized with by now. Nym's cheerier variant is done plus I also went back and revised Garak's portrait, which still needed some adjustments. I'm currently working on angered Eloh, I'll have her done later today and it will wrap up the essential cast.<br> <br> After this I have an Elyssa in progress and room for one last portrait before the release of 1.14. It could be either :<br> - the merfolk priestress, Melusand<br> - the merfolk warrior, Esanoo<br> - a naga with bow (?)<br> <br> I would make a choice based on their importance in the campaign and the quality of their generic portrait.
