He was cast to play Anwar Kharral, a Pakistani youth. Although ostensibly a Muslim, Anwar drinks, takes drugs, engages in premarital sex, and has a homosexual best friend. In 2007, he was hired by <a href="/people/887/000044755/">Danny Boyle</a> to play the lead in <a href="/films/045/000178508/">Slumdog Millionaire</a>, replacing his original selection, Bollywood actor Ruslaan Mumtaz, who was "too good looking." <i>Slumdog</i> ended up being one of the best films of 2008, winning eight Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director. Patel won several awards for his performance, including a British Independent Film Award for most promising newcomer, and a Critic's Choice Award for best young actor.
