The rough, irregular stones of the street, pointing every way, and designed, one might have thought, expressly to lame all living creatures that approached them, had dammed it into little pools; these were surrounded, each by its own jostling group or crowd, according to its size. Some men kneeled down, made scoops of their two hands joined, and sipped, or tried to help women, who bent over their shoulders, to sip, before the wine had all run out between their fingers. Others, men and women, dipped in the puddles with little mugs of mutilated earthenware, or even with handkerchiefs from women's heads, which were squeezed dry into infants' mouths; others made small mud-embankments, to stem the wine as it ran; others, directed by lookers-on up at high windows, darted here and there, to cut off little streams of wine that started away in new directions; others devoted themselves to the sodden and lee-dyed pieces of the cask, licking, and even champing the moister wine-rotted fragments with eager relish. There was no drainage to carry off the wine, and not only did it all get taken up, but so much mud got taken up along with it, that there might have been a scavenger in the street, if anybody acquainted with it could have believed in such a miraculous presence.</dd> <dd>A shrill sound of laughter and of amused voices—voices of <a href="/wiki/Men" class="mw-redirect" title="Men">men</a>, <a href="/wiki/Women" title="Women">women</a>, and <a href="/wiki/Children" title="Children">children</a>—resounded in the street while this wine game lasted. There was little roughness in the sport, and much playfulness. There was a special companionship in it, an observable inclination on the part of every one to join some other one, which led, especially among the luckier or lighter-hearted, to frolicsome embraces, drinking of healths, shaking of hands, and even joining of hands and dancing, a dozen together. When the wine was gone, and the places where it had been most abundant were raked into a gridiron-pattern by fingers, these demonstrations ceased, as suddenly as they had broken out. The man who had left his saw sticking in the firewood he was cutting, set it in motion again; the women who had left on a door-step the little pot of hot ashes, at which she had been trying to soften the pain in her own starved fingers and toes, or in those of her child, returned to it; men with bare arms, matted locks, and cadaverous faces, who had emerged into the winter light from cellars, moved away, to descend again; and a gloom gathered on the scene that appeared more natural to it than sunshine.</dd></dl> <figure class="mw-default-size" typeof="mw:File/Thumb"><a href="/wiki/File:T2C,_Scrawling_%27BLOOD%27_on_the_Wall_(John_McLenan).jpeg" class="mw-file-description"><img src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ea/T2C%2C_Scrawling_%27BLOOD%27_on_the_Wall_%28John_McLenan%29.jpeg/220px-T2C%2C_Scrawling_%27BLOOD%27_on_the_Wall_%28John_McLenan%29.jpeg" decoding="async" width="220" height="240" class="mw-file-element" srcset="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ea/T2C%2C_Scrawling_%27BLOOD%27_on_the_Wall_%28John_McLenan%29.jpeg/330px-T2C%2C_Scrawling_%27BLOOD%27_on_the_Wall_%28John_McLenan%29.jpeg 1.5x, //upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ea/T2C%2C_Scrawling_%27BLOOD%27_on_the_Wall_%28John_McLenan%29.jpeg/440px-T2C%2C_Scrawling_%27BLOOD%27_on_the_Wall_%28John_McLenan%29.jpeg 2x" data-file-width="529" data-file-height="576" /></a><figcaption><a href="/wiki/BLOOD" class="mw-redirect" title="BLOOD">BLOOD</a>. Dickens uses the literary device <i>anaphora</i>, which is the repetition of a word or phrase over many lines (doubles), many times throughout <i>A Tale of Two Cities</i>. "It is a far, far better..." is repeated twice in these parting lines, as "It was the ____ of times, it was the epoch of _____," etc. is repeated in the opening lines. This motif of doubles makes up the entire plot of the novel: the two main characters, Darnay and Carton are doubles of each other; London and Paris are the 'two cities' to which the title refers. The very last thoughts attributed to Carton, in their poetic use of repetition, register this faith as a calm and soothing certainty: that both the name of Sydney Carton and of France will be reborn into glory and made "illustrious".</li></ul></li></ul> <div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="External_links">External links</h2><span class="mw-editsection"><span class="mw-editsection-bracket">[</span><a href="/w/index.php?title=A_Tale_of_Two_Cities&amp;action=edit&amp;section=27" title="Edit section: External links"><span>edit</span></a><span class="mw-editsection-bracket">]</span></span></div> <ul><li><span typeof="mw:File"><span><img alt="" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/80/Wikipedia-logo-v2.svg/12px-Wikipedia-logo-v2.svg.png" decoding="async" width="12" height="11" class="mw-file-element" srcset="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/80/Wikipedia-logo-v2.svg/18px-Wikipedia-logo-v2.svg.png 1.5x, //upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/80/Wikipedia-logo-v2.svg/24px-Wikipedia-logo-v2.svg.png 2x" data-file-width="103" data-file-height="94" /></span></span> Encyclopedic article on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search/A_Tale_of_Two_Cities" class="extiw" title="w:Special:Search/A Tale of Two Cities">A Tale of Two Cities</a> on Wikipedia</li> <li><span typeof="mw:File"><span><img alt="" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4c/Wikisource-logo.svg/11px-Wikisource-logo.svg.png" decoding="async" width="11" height="12" class="mw-file-element" srcset="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4c/Wikisource-logo.svg/17px-Wikisource-logo.svg.png 1.5x, //upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4c/Wikisource-logo.svg/23px-Wikisource-logo.svg.png 2x" data-file-width="410" data-file-height="430" /></span></span> Works related to <a href="https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/A_Tale_of_Two_Cities_(Dickens)" class="extiw" title="s:A Tale of Two Cities (Dickens)">A Tale of Two Cities (Dickens)</a> on Wikisource</li> <li><span typeof="mw:File"><span><img alt="" src="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/Commons-logo.svg/9px-Commons-logo.svg.png" decoding="async" width="9" height="12" class="mw-file-element" srcset="//upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/Commons-logo.svg/13px-Commons-logo.svg.png 1.5x, //upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/Commons-logo.svg/18px-Commons-logo.svg.png 2x" data-file-width="1024" data-file-height="1376" /></span></span> Media related to <a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/category:A_Tale_of_Two_Cities" class="extiw" title="commons:category:A Tale of Two Cities">A Tale of Two Cities</a> on Wikimedia Commons</li> <li><a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://www.gutenberg.org/etext/98">Free eBook of <i>A Tale of Two Cities</i></a> at <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Gutenberg" class="extiw" title="w:Project Gutenberg">Project Gutenberg</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://taleoftwocities.publicliterature.org"><i>A Tale of Two Cities</i>, full text and audio</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://librivox.org/a-tale-of-two-cities-by-charles-dickens/"><i>Complete audio book at Librivox Project</i></a>.</li> <li><a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.bookrags.com/notes/ttc/index.htm"><i>A Tale of Two Cities Book Notes Summary</i></a>.</li> <li><a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.gresham.ac.uk/event.asp?PageId=45&amp;EventId=611">'Dickens: A Tale of Two Cities' by Dr. Tony Williams, a lecture at Gresham College (3 July 2007)</a></li> <li><a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="http://www.shmoop.com/tale-of-two-cities/quotes.html">A Tale of Two Cities quotes</a> analyzed; study guide with themes, character analyses, literary devices, teacher resources</li></ul> <!-- NewPP limit report Parsed by mw‐web.codfw.main‐6769bf7f47‐pc9vc Cached time: 20250129093827 Cache expiry: 2592000 Reduced expiry: false Complications: [show‐toc] CPU time usage: 0.059 seconds Real time usage: 0.078 seconds Preprocessor visited node count: 2005/1000000 Post‐expand include size: 8531/2097152 bytes Template argument size: 5456/2097152 bytes Highest expansion depth: 28/100 Expensive parser function count: 0/500 Unstrip recursion depth: 0/20 Unstrip post‐expand size: 0/5000000 bytes Number of Wikibase entities loaded: 0/400 --> <!-- Transclusion expansion time report (%,ms,calls, template) 100.00% 37.883 1 -total 69.36% 26.277 1 Template:Italic_title 58.83% 22.288 1 Template:Str_find 54.50% 20.645 1 Template:Str_find/logic 35.07% 13.287 99 Template:Str_left 10.41% 3.944 1 Template:Str_len 8.50% 3.220 3 Template:Str_len/core 7.88% 2.984 1 Template:Wikipedia-inline 6.88% 2.606 3 Template:Sister-inline 6.17% 2.336 1 Template:Cite_web --> <!-- Saved in parser cache with key enwikiquote:pcache:70:|#|:idhash:canonical and timestamp 20250129093827 and revision id 3547565.
