Galaction</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Rosmarinic acid, an ester of caffeic acid and 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) lactic acid, is considered a valuable compound for the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries due to its antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, anti-allergic, and anti-inflammatory effects. It can be obtained by extraction from vegetable or animal materials, by chemical synthesis and biosynthesis. Indifferent of the method used for rosmarinic acid production, the separation and purification process implies high amount of raw materials and laborious stages leading to high cost for and limitations of the separation technology. This study focused on separation of rosmarinic acid by synergic reactive extraction with a mixture of two extractants, one acidic (acid di-(2ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid, D2EHPA) and one with basic character (Amberlite LA-2). The studies were performed in experimental equipment consisting of an extraction column where the phases’ mixing was made by mean of a perforated disk with 45 mm diameter and 20% free section, maintained at the initial contact interface between the aqueous and organic phases. The vibrations had a frequency of 50 s⁻¹ and 5 mm amplitude. The extraction was carried out in two solvents with different dielectric constants (n-heptane and dichloromethane) in which the extractants mixture of varying concentration was dissolved. The pH-value of initial aqueous solution was varied between 1 and 7. The efficiency of the studied extraction systems was quantified by distribution and synergic coefficients. For calculating these parameters, the rosmarinic acid concentration in the initial aqueous solution and in the raffinate have been measured by HPLC. The influences of extractants concentrations and solvent polarity on the efficiency of rosmarinic acid separation by synergic extraction with a mixture of Amberlite LA-2 and D2EHPA have been analyzed. In the reactive extraction system with a constant concentration of Amberlite LA-2 in the organic phase, the increase of D2EHPA concentration leads to decrease of the synergic coefficient. This is because the increase of D2EHPA concentration prevents the formation of amine adducts and, consequently, affects the hydrophobicity of the interfacial complex with rosmarinic acid. For these reasons, the diminution of synergic coefficient is more important for dichloromethane. By maintaining a constant value of D2EHPA concentration and increasing the concentration of Amberlite LA-2, the synergic coefficient could become higher than 1, its highest values being reached for n-heptane. Depending on the solvent polarity and D2EHPA amount in the solvent phase, the synergic effect is observed for Amberlite LA-2 concentrations over 20 g/l dissolved in n-heptane. Thus, by increasing the concentration of D2EHPA from 5 to 40 g/l, the minimum concentration value of Amberlite LA-2 corresponding to synergism increases from 20 to 40 g/l for the solvent with lower polarity, namely, n-heptane, while there is no synergic effect recorded for dichloromethane. By analysing the influences of the main factors (organic phase polarity, extractant concentration in the mixture) on the efficiency of synergic extraction of rosmarinic acid, the most important synergic effect was found to correspond to the extractants mixture containing 5 g/l D2EHPA and 40 g/l Amberlite LA-2 dissolved in n-heptane. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amberlite%20LA-2" title="Amberlite LA-2">Amberlite LA-2</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=di%282-ethylhexyl%29%20phosphoric%20acid" title=" di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid"> di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rosmarinic%20acid" title=" rosmarinic acid"> rosmarinic acid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=synergic%20effect" title=" synergic effect"> synergic effect</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/82741/nonconventional-method-for-separation-of-rosmarinic-acid-synergic-extraction" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/82741.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">290</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">96</span> Generating 3D Anisotropic Centroidal Voronoi Tessellations</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandre%20Marin">Alexandre Marin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Bac"> Alexandra Bac</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laurent%20Astart"> Laurent Astart</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> New numerical methods for PDE resolution (such as Finite Volumes (FV) or Virtual Elements Method (VEM)) open new needs in terms of meshing of domains of interest, and in particular, polyhedral meshes have many advantages. One way to build such meshes consists of constructing Restricted Voronoi Diagrams (RVDs) whose boundaries respect the domain of interest. By minimizing a function defined for RVDs, the shapes of cells can be controlled, e.g., elongated according to user-defined directions or adjusted to comply with given aspect ratios (anisotropy) and density variations. In this paper, our contribution is threefold: First, we introduce a new gradient formula for the Voronoi tessellation energy under a continuous anisotropy field. Second, we describe a meshing algorithm based on the optimisation of this function that we validate against state-of-the-art approaches. Finally, we propose a hierarchical approach to speed up our meshing algorithm. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anisotropic%20Voronoi%20diagrams" title="anisotropic Voronoi diagrams">anisotropic Voronoi diagrams</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=meshes%20for%20numerical%20simulations" title=" meshes for numerical simulations"> meshes for numerical simulations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimisation" title=" optimisation"> optimisation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=volumic%20polyhedral%20meshing" title=" volumic polyhedral meshing"> volumic polyhedral meshing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/172242/generating-3d-anisotropic-centroidal-voronoi-tessellations" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/172242.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">115</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">95</span> A Conceptual E-Business Model and the Effect of Strategic Planning Parameters on E-Business Strategy Management and Performance</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Lipitakis">Alexandra Lipitakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Evangelia%20A.%20E.%20C.%20Lipitakis"> Evangelia A. The relationships between these strategic planning parameters, i.e. Formality, Participation, Sophistication, Thoroughness, Synergy and Cooperation, Entropic Factor, Adaptivity, Uncertainty and Financial and Non-Financial Performance are examined and the directions of these relationships are given. A conceptual model has been constructed and quantitative research methods can be used to test the considered eight hypotheses. In the framework of e-business strategy planning this research study clearly demonstrates how strategic planning components have positive relationships with e-business strategy management and performance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-business%20management" title="e-business management">e-business management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-business%20model" title=" e-business model"> e-business model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-business%20performance%20assessments" title=" e-business performance assessments"> e-business performance assessments</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strategy%20management%20methodologies" title=" strategy management methodologies"> strategy management methodologies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strategy%20planning" title=" strategy planning"> strategy planning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quantitative%20methods" title=" quantitative methods"> quantitative methods</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46598/a-conceptual-e-business-model-and-the-effect-of-strategic-planning-parameters-on-e-business-strategy-management-and-performance" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/46598.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">390</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">94</span> Child Molesters’ Perceptions of Their Abusive Behavior in a Greek Prison</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Polychronis%20Voultsos">Polychronis Voultsos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Theodora%20Pandelidou"> Theodora Pandelidou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20K.%20Tsaroucha"> Alexandra K. To our knowledge, there is a relative research gap on this topic. Method: A prospective qualitative study using in-depth interviews with eight child molesters who were convicted and imprisoned in a Greek prison. The research was conducted in May 2022. Results: Child molesters' cognitive distortions including justifications, rationalizations and minimizations emerged from our data analysis (content analysis). Importantly, child molesters. adopted a particularly daring ‘role reversal’. Participants reported themselves as being ‘victims’. They said that the children (namely, their victims) were the ones who made the first move and got them in the mood for having sex with the children. Furthermore, we discuss our results in the context of the existing international academic literature on the area of this research. Conclusions: Child molesters' different cognitive distortions emerged from our data analysis, with ‘role reversal’ being prevalent. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=child%20molesters" title="child molesters">child molesters</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sex%20offenders" title=" sex offenders"> sex offenders</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cognitive%20distortions" title=" cognitive distortions"> cognitive distortions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Greece" title=" Greece"> Greece</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154123/child-molesters-perceptions-of-their-abusive-behavior-in-a-greek-prison" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154123.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">124</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">93</span> Fourier Galerkin Approach to Wave Equation with Absorbing Boundary Conditions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Leukauf">Alexandra Leukauf</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexander%20Schirrer"> Alexander Schirrer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emir%20Talic"> Emir Talic</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Numerical computation of wave propagation in a large domain usually requires significant computational effort. Hence, the considered domain must be truncated to a smaller domain of interest. In addition, special boundary conditions, which absorb the outward travelling waves, need to be implemented in order to describe the system domains correctly. In this work, the linear one dimensional wave equation is approximated by utilizing the Fourier Galerkin approach. Furthermore, the artificial boundaries are realized with absorbing boundary conditions. Within this work, a systematic work flow for setting up the wave problem, including the absorbing boundary conditions, is proposed. As a result, a convenient modal system description with an effective absorbing boundary formulation is established. Moreover, the truncated model shows high accuracy compared to the global domain. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=absorbing%20boundary%20conditions" title="absorbing boundary conditions">absorbing boundary conditions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=boundary%20control" title=" boundary control"> boundary control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fourier%20Galerkin%20approach" title=" Fourier Galerkin approach"> Fourier Galerkin approach</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modal%20approach" title=" modal approach"> modal approach</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wave%20equation" title=" wave equation"> wave equation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65648/fourier-galerkin-approach-to-wave-equation-with-absorbing-boundary-conditions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65648.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">396</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">92</span> Failure Analysis of Electrode, Nozzle Plate, and Powder Injector during Air Plasma Spray Coating</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nemes%20Alexandra">Nemes Alexandra</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The aim of the research is to develop an optimum microstructure of steel coatings on aluminum surfaces for application on the crankcase cylinder bores. Located on London’s doorstep, the 70,000-hectare region is under extraordinary pressure for regeneration, further development, and economic expansion, yet faces extreme challenges: sea-level rise and inadequate flood defenses, stormwater flooding and threatened infrastructure, loss of internationally important habitats, significant existing community deprivation, and lack of connectivity and access to green space. The brief was to embrace these challenges in the creation of a document that would form a key part of ASELA’s Joint Strategic Framework and feed into local plans and master plans. Thus, helping to tackle climate change, ecological collapse, and social inequity at a regional scale whilst creating a relationship and awareness between urban communities and the surrounding landscapes and nature. The SEGBI project applied a ‘land-based’ methodology, combined with a co-design approach involving numerous stakeholders, to explore how living infrastructure can address these significant issues, reshape future planning and development, and create thriving places for the whole community of life. It comprised three key stages, including Baseline Review; Green and Blue Infrastructure Assessment; and the final Green and Blue Infrastructure Report. The resulting proposals frame an ambitious vision for the delivery of a new regional South Essex Estuary (SEE) Park – 24,000 hectares of protected and connected landscapes. This unified parkland system will drive effective place-shaping and “leveling up” for the most deprived communities while providing large-scale nature recovery and biodiversity net gain. Comprehensive analysis and policy recommendations ensure best practices will be embedded within planning documents and decisions guiding future development. Furthermore, a Natural Capital Account was undertaken as part of the strategy showing the tremendous economic value of the natural assets. This strategy sets a pioneering precedent that demonstrates how the prioritisation of living infrastructure has the capacity to address climate change and ecological collapse, while also supporting sustainable housing, healthier communities, and resilient infrastructures. It was only achievable through a collaborative and cross-boundary approach to strategic planning and growth, with a shared vision of place, and a strong commitment to delivery. With joined-up thinking and a joined-up region, a more impactful plan for South Essex was developed that will lead to numerous environmental, social, and economic benefits across the region, and enhancing the landscape and natural environs on the periphery of one of the largest cities in the world. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title="climate change">climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=green%20and%20blue%20infrastructure" title=" green and blue infrastructure"> green and blue infrastructure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=landscape%20architecture" title=" landscape architecture"> landscape architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=master%20planning" title=" master planning"> master planning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=regional%20planning" title=" regional planning"> regional planning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20equity" title=" social equity"> social equity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162746/a-case-for-strategic-landscape-infrastructure-south-essex-estuary-park" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162746.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">97</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">90</span> Comparison of Agree Method and Shortest Path Method for Determining the Flow Direction in Basin Morphometric Analysis: Case Study of Lower Tapi Basin, Western India</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jaypalsinh%20Parmar">Jaypalsinh Parmar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pintu%20Nakrani"> Pintu Nakrani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bhaumik%20Shah"> Bhaumik Shah</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is elevation data of the virtual grid on the ground. For the present study, open source SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission with 1 arc resolution) and toposheets issued by Survey of India (SOI) were used to determine the morphometric linear aspect such as stream order, number of stream, stream length, bifurcation ratio, mean stream length, mean bifurcation ratio, stream length ratio, length of overland flow, constant of channel maintenance and aerial aspect such as drainage density, stream frequency, drainage texture, form factor, circularity ratio, elongation ratio, shape factor and relief aspect such as relief ratio, gradient ratio and basin relief for 53 catchments of Lower Tapi Basin. Stream network was digitized from the available toposheets. Agree DEM was created by using the SRTM and stream network from the toposheets. The results obtained were used to demonstrate a comparison between the two methods in the flat areas. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agree%20method" title="agree method">agree method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=morphometric%20analysis" title=" morphometric analysis"> morphometric analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lower%20Tapi%20basin" title=" lower Tapi basin"> lower Tapi basin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shortest%20path%20method" title=" shortest path method"> shortest path method</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71574/comparison-of-agree-method-and-shortest-path-method-for-determining-the-flow-direction-in-basin-morphometric-analysis-case-study-of-lower-tapi-basin-western-india" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71574.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">239</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">89</span> 3D Virtualization through Data Collected from Measurements of Mobile Signal Reception Power Levels (LTE) Band at Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo in Riobamba-Ecuador</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandra%20Cuenca">Sandra Cuenca</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Steven%20Chango"> Steven Chango</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabian%20Chamba"> Fabian Chamba</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Vaca"> Alexandra Vaca</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This project addresses a representation of a virtual environment based on the analysis of the RSRP (Reference Signal Received Power) obtained by the Network Cell Info Lite application at the Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) considering the open areas of the Business Administration Department in the 4G LTE Frequency (band 2) of Claro Telephony at a frequency of 1967. 5 MHz, where measurements were performed from 17:00 UTC-05:00. The usage of the poling for second optical harmonic generation, fabrication of optical waveguides and electrooptic modulators was also reported. Nevertheless, the detailed description of the poling of glasses, containing multiple charge carriers is still under discussion. In particular, the role of possible migration of electrons in the space charge formation usually remains out of the question. In this work, we performed the numerical simulation of thermal poling of a silicate glass, containing Na, K, Mg, and Ca. We took into consideration the contribution of electrons in the polarization process. The possible explanation of migration of electrons can be the break of non-bridging oxygen bonds. It was found, that the modeled depth of the space charge region is about 10 times higher if the migration of the negative charges is taken under consideration. The simulated profiles of cations, participating in the polarization process, are in a good agreement with the experimental data, obtained by glow discharge spectroscopy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=glass%20poling" title="glass poling">glass poling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=charge%20transport" title=" charge transport"> charge transport</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modeling" title=" modeling"> modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=concentration%20profiles" title=" concentration profiles"> concentration profiles</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67507/polarization-of-glass-with-positive-and-negative-charge-carriers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67507.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">359</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">87</span> Geochemical and Mineralogical Characteristics of Soils in Areas Affected by the Fires of August 2021 at the Ilia Prefecture Greece</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dionisios%20Panagiotaras">Dionisios Panagiotaras</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pavlos%20Avramidis"> Pavlos Avramidis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dimitrios%20Papoulis"> Dimitrios Papoulis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dionysios%20Koulougliotis"> Dionysios Koulougliotis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dionisis%20C.%20Christodoulopoulos"> Dionisis C. The aim is to underline longstanding inequalities and demonstrate that crises merely amplify and exacerbate challenges that low-income migrants already face during ‘non-crises’ periods. Social protection, as an agenda for reducing vulnerability, poverty, and risk for low-income households, with regard to basic consumption and services, has been foregrounded in the post-apartheid development discourse in South Africa. Evidently, however, the state, through the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), systemically excludes the majority of non-citizens from state-sponsored social assistance programs - often leaving them heavily dependent on sporadic non-state options and erosive coping mechanisms. In this paper, migration itself should not only be understood as a social protection strategy against poverty and risk but also as a source of vulnerability that often requires social protection. For quasi-ethnographic, it use one migrant destination, Alex Park Township, as a “contact zone” and space of negotiation during the pandemic. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=south-south%20migration" title="south-south migration">south-south migration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=crises" title=" crises"> crises</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20protection" title=" social protection"> social protection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Covid-19%20pandemic" title=" Covid-19 pandemic"> Covid-19 pandemic</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154364/migration-related-challenges-during-the-covid-19-pandemic-in-south-africa-a-case-of-alexandra-township" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/154364.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">91</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">85</span> The Study of Ecological Seabirds in Algeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Baaloudj">A. The study of the breeding ecology of the species was undertaken at the Srigina Island (Skikda). The mean clutch size was 2.64±0.62, 2.49±0.72 and 2.37±0.77eggsin the three study years 2009-2011 respectively. Hatching success was similar for the first two years of study (53% in 2009and 54% in 2010) but significantly lower in the third year (27% in 2011). The same trend was found for the fledging success, it was 33% and 32% in 2009and 2010respectivelyandonly 14% in 2011. Cannibalism and predation by cats were the two likely causes of low reproductive success in the third year. Regarding the species dispersal, we started a banding program of the yellow-legged gulls Larus michahellis michahellis in 2009, the first scheme of its kind in North Africa. Banding of chicks was initiated at Skikda and extended, a year later, to four other colonies located along the Algerian coast. Preliminary analysis of ringed yellow-legged gulls from Algerian colonies indicates that juveniles dispersed in a north-westerly direction to the Balearic Sea, the Bay of Biscay, the Alboran Sea and the western Atlantic coast from the Bay of Cadiz to the Galician shores. Preliminary data suggested two distinct routes: gulls from the eastern North African colonies moved N/NW to eastern Spain and overland to the Bay of Biscay, a pattern of dispersal previously reported for birds from Spanish and French western Mediterranean colonies. Juveniles from western colonies seemed also to move N/NW to the Alboran Sea and the Bay of Cadiz. In Spain, where most of the dispersal took place, data suggested that Algerian gulls occupied coastal areas which are used as aestivating refuges before returning to North Africa in late autumn and winter. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=breeding%20ecology" title="breeding ecology">breeding ecology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=population%20dynamic" title=" population dynamic"> population dynamic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dispersal" title=" dispersal"> dispersal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=yellow-legged%20gull%20larus%20michahellis" title=" yellow-legged gull larus michahellis"> yellow-legged gull larus michahellis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sea%20bird" title=" sea bird"> sea bird</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=banding%20scheme" title=" banding scheme"> banding scheme</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Srigina" title=" Srigina"> Srigina</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Algeria" title=" Algeria"> Algeria</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38050/the-study-of-ecological-seabirds-in-algeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38050.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">203</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">84</span> Determining Optimum Locations for Runoff Water Harvesting in W. Wadi Watir in the southeastern part of Sinai Peninsula is considered as one of the main and active basins in the Gulf of Aqaba drainage system. It is characterized by steep hills mainly consist of impermeable rocks, whereas the streambeds are covered by a highly permeable mixture of gravel and sand. A comprehensive approach involving the integration of geographic information systems, remote sensing and watershed modeling was followed to identify the RWH capability in this area. Eight thematic layers, viz volume of annual flood, overland flow distance, maximum flow distance, rock or soil infiltration, drainage frequency density, basin area, basin slope and basin length were used as a multi-parametric decision support system for conducting weighted spatial probability models (WSPMs) to determine the potential areas for the RWH. The WSPMs maps classified the area into five RWH potentiality classes ranging from the very low to very high. Three performed WSPMs' scenarios for W. Watir reflected identical results among their maps for the high and very high RWH potentiality classes, which are the most suitable ones for conducting surface water harvesting techniques. There is also a reasonable match with respect to the potentiality of runoff harvesting areas with a probability of moderate, low and very low among the three scenarios. WSPM results have shown that the high and very high classes, which are the most suitable for the RWH are representing approximately 40.23% of the total area of the basin. Accordingly, several locations were decided for the establishment of water harvesting dams and cisterns to improve the water conditions and living environment in the study area. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sinai" title="Sinai">Sinai</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wadi%20Watir" title=" Wadi Watir"> Wadi Watir</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=remote%20sensing" title=" remote sensing"> remote sensing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geographic%20information%20systems" title=" geographic information systems"> geographic information systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=watershed%20modeling" title=" watershed modeling"> watershed modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=runoff%20water%20harvesting" title=" runoff water harvesting"> runoff water harvesting</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41954/determining-optimum-locations-for-runoff-water-harvesting-in-w-watir-south-sinai-using-rs-gis-and-wms-techniques" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41954.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">357</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">83</span> Growing Architecture, Technical Product Harvesting of Near Net Shape Building Components</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Franziska%20Moser">Franziska Moser</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Martin%20Trautz"> Martin Trautz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anna-Lena%20Beger"> Anna-Lena Beger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Manuel%20L%C3%B6wer"> Manuel Löwer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J%C3%B6rg%20Feldhusen"> Jörg Feldhusen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J%C3%BCrgen%20Prell"> Jürgen Prell</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Wormit"> Alexandra Wormit</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bj%C3%B6rn%20Usadel"> Björn Usadel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christoph%20K%C3%A4mpfer"> Christoph Kämpfer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas-Benjamin%20Seiler"> Thomas-Benjamin Seiler</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Henner%20Hollert"> Henner Hollert</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The demand for bio-based materials and components in architecture has increased in recent years due to society’s heightened environmental awareness. Nowadays, most components are being developed via a substitution approach, which aims at replacing conventional components with natural alternatives who are then being processed, shaped and manufactured to fit the desired application. This contribution introduces a novel approach to the development of bio-based products that decreases resource consumption and increases recyclability. In this approach, natural organisms like plants or trees are not being used in a processed form, but grow into a near net shape before then being harvested and utilized as building components. By minimizing the conventional production steps, the amount of resources used in manufacturing decreases whereas the recyclability increases. This paper presents the approach of technical product harvesting, explains the theoretical basis as well as the matching process of product requirements and biological properties, and shows first results of the growth manipulation studies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20with%20nature" title="design with nature">design with nature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=eco%20manufacturing" title=" eco manufacturing"> eco manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sustainable%20construction%20materials" title=" sustainable construction materials"> sustainable construction materials</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=technical%20product%20harvesting" title=" technical product harvesting "> technical product harvesting </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26137/growing-architecture-technical-product-harvesting-of-near-net-shape-building-components" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26137.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">500</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">82</span> The Impact of the General Data Protection Regulation on Human Resources Management in Schools</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Aslanidou">Alexandra Aslanidou</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), concerning the protection of natural persons within the European Union with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, became applicable in the European Union (EU) on 25 May 2018 and transformed the way personal data were being treated under the Data Protection Directive (DPD) regime, generating sweeping organizational changes to both public sector and business. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the decisive role that GDPR plays in HR departments that operate in schools and in order to practically evaluate the aftermath of the Regulation during the first months of its applicability; a comparative use cases analysis in five highly dynamic schools, across three EU Member States, was attempted. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=general%20data%20protection%20regulation" title="general data protection regulation">general data protection regulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20resource%20management" title=" human resource management"> human resource management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=educational%20system" title=" educational system"> educational system</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/117235/the-impact-of-the-general-data-protection-regulation-on-human-resources-management-in-schools" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/117235.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">100</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">81</span> An Evidence Map of Cost-Utility Studies in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cassandra%20Springate">Cassandra Springate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Furber"> Alexandra Furber</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jack%20E.%20Hines"> Jack E. Methods: Using the Disease, Study Type, and Model Type filters in heoro.com we identified all cost-utility studies published between 1960 and 2017 with patients with non-small cell lung cancer. These papers were then indexed according to pre-specified categories. Results: Heoro.com identified 89 independent publications, published between 1995 and 2017. Of the 89 papers, 74 were published since 2010, 28 were from the USA, and 35 were from Europe, 16 of which were from the UK. Other publications were from China and Japan (13), Canada (9), Australia and New Zealand (4), and other countries (8). Fifty-nine studies included a chemotherapy intervention, of which 23 included erlotinib or gefitinib, 21 included pemetrexed or docetaxel, others included nivolumab (3), pembrolizumab (2), crizotinib (2), denosumab (2), necitumumab (1), and bevacizumab (1). Also, 19 studies modeled screening, staging, or surveillance strategies. Conclusions: The cost-utility studies found for NSCLC most commonly looked at the effectiveness of different chemotherapy treatments, with some also evaluating the addition of screening strategies. Most were also conducted with patient data from the USA and Europe. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cancer" title="cancer">cancer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cost-utility" title=" cost-utility"> cost-utility</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=economic%20model" title=" economic model"> economic model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-small%20cell%20lung%20cancer" title=" non-small cell lung cancer"> non-small cell lung cancer</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/89520/an-evidence-map-of-cost-utility-studies-in-non-small-cell-lung-cancer" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/89520.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">150</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">80</span> Preparation of Polylactide Nanoparticles by Supercritical Fluid Technology</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jakub%20Z%C3%A1gora">Jakub Zágora</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniela%20Plach%C3%A1"> Daniela Plachá</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karla%20%C4%8Cech%20Barabaszov%C3%A1"> Karla Čech Barabaszová</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sylva%20Hole%C5%A1ov%C3%A1"> Sylva Holešová</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Roman%20G%C3%A1bor"> Roman Gábor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Mu%C3%B1oz%20Bonilla"> Alexandra Muñoz Bonilla</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marta%20Fern%C3%A1ndez%20Garc%C3%ADa"> Marta Fernández García</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The development of new antimicrobial materials that are not toxic to higher living organisms is a major challenge today. Newly developed materials can have high application potential in biomedicine, coatings, packaging, etc. A combination of commonly used biopolymer polylactide with cationic polymers seems to be very successful in the fight against antimicrobial resistance [1].PLA will play a key role in fulfilling the intention set out in the New Deal announced by the EU commission, as it is a bioplastic that is easily degradable, recyclable, and mass-produced. Also, the development of 3D printing in the context of this initiative, and the actual use of PLA as one of the main materials used for this printing, make the technology around the preparation and modification of PLA quite logical. Moreover, theenvironmentally friendly and energy saving technology like supercritical fluid process (SFP) will be used for their preparation. In a first approach, polylactide nano- and microparticles and structures were prepared by supercritical fluid extraction. The RESS (rapid expansion supercritical fluid solution) method is easier to optimize and shows better particle size control. On the contrary, a highly porous structure was obtained using the SAS (supercritical antisolvent) method. In a second part, the antimicrobial biobased polymer was introduced by SFP. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polylactide" title="polylactide">polylactide</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antimicrobial%20polymers" title=" antimicrobial polymers"> antimicrobial polymers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supercritical%20fluid%20technology" title=" supercritical fluid technology"> supercritical fluid technology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=micronization" title=" micronization"> micronization</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142773/preparation-of-polylactide-nanoparticles-by-supercritical-fluid-technology" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142773.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">188</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">79</span> Highway Waste Management in Zambia Policy Preparedness and Remedies: The Case of Great East Road</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Floyd%20Misheck%20Mwanza">Floyd Misheck Mwanza</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paul%20Boniface%20Majura"> Paul Boniface Majura</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The paper looked at highways/ roadside waste generation, disposal and the consequent environmental impacts. The dramatic increase in vehicular and paved roads in the recent past in Zambia, has given rise to the indiscriminate disposal of litter that now poses a threat to health and the environment. Primary data was generated by carrying out oral interviews and field observations for holistic and in–depth assessment of the environment and the secondary data was obtained from desk review method, information on effects of roadside wastes on environment were obtained from relevant literatures. The interviews were semi structured and a purposive sampling method was adopted and analyzed descriptively. The results of the findings showed that population growth and unplanned road expansion has exceeded the expected limit in recent time with resultant poor system of roadside wastes disposal. Roadside wastes which contain both biodegradable and non-biodegradable roadside wastes are disposed at the shoulders of major highways in temporary dumpsites and are never collected by a road development agency (RDA). There is no organized highway to highway or street to street collection of the wastes in Zambia by the key organization the RDA. The study revealed that roadside disposal of roadside wastes has serious impacts on the environment. Some of these impacts include physical nuisance of the wastes to the environment, the waste dumps also serve as hideouts for rodents and snakes which are dangerous. Waste are blown around by wind making the environment filthy, most of the wastes are also been washed by overland flow during heavy downpour to block drainage channels and subsequently lead to flooding of the environment. Most of the non- biodegradable wastes contain toxic chemicals which have serious implications on the environmental sustainability and human health. The paper therefore recommends that Government/ RDA should come up with proper orientation and environmental laws should be put in place for the general public and also to provide necessary facilities and arrange for better methods of collection of wastes. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biodegradable" title="biodegradable">biodegradable</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=disposal" title=" disposal"> disposal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environment" title=" environment"> environment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=impacts" title=" impacts"> impacts</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49030/highway-waste-management-in-zambia-policy-preparedness-and-remedies-the-case-of-great-east-road" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/49030.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">343</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">78</span> Identity Conflict between Social and Business Entrepreneurs: The Challenge of Constructing a Novel Social Identity</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rui%20G.%20Ser%C3%B4dio">Rui G. Specifically, we address how both differentiation and assimilation processes are set of in the context of constructing a novel, distinctive and socially salient – social entrepreneurs. As part of a larger research line, a quasi-experimental study with Social and Business Entrepreneurs, as well as “Lay People” provided evidence consistent with our predictions: (1) Social Entrepreneurs, in contrast with Lay People and Business Entrepreneurs, value more strongly social identity than personal identity, and the later is the only group that values Personal Differentiation; (2) unlike Entrepreneurs, Social Entrepreneurs display an ingroup bias across group evaluations; (3) Lay People, display a self-serving bias, although, overall, they allocate a more positive image to the target groups; (4) combining own vs. others evaluations across all groups, Social Entrepreneurs receive the more positive value. From the standpoint of social identity and self-categorization theories and their approach to group process, we discuss the processes of intergroup comparison and differentiation as core processes in the construction of a positive social identity. We illustrate it within the context of social entrepreneurship, a political and social “wave” that flows across Europe at this time. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=group%20processes" title="group processes">group processes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20entrepreneurship" title=" social entrepreneurship"> social entrepreneurship</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=social%20identity" title=" social identity"> social identity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=business%20entrepreneurs" title=" business entrepreneurs"> business entrepreneurs</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23085/identity-conflict-between-social-and-business-entrepreneurs-the-challenge-of-constructing-a-novel-social-identity" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/23085.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">695</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">77</span> Internet Memes: A Mirror of Culture and Society</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra-Monica%20Toma">Alexandra-Monica Toma</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> As the internet became a ruling force of society, computer-mediated communication has enriched its methods to convey meaning by combining linguistic means to visual means of expressivity. One of the elements of cyberspace is what we call a meme, a succinct, visually engaging tool used to communicate ideas or emotions, usually in a funny or ironic manner. Coined by Richard Dawkings in the late 1970s to refer to cultural genes, this term now denominates a special type of vernacular language used to share content on the internet. This research aims to analyse the basic mechanism that stands at the basis of meme creation as a blend of innovation and imitation and will approach some of the most widely used image macros remixed to generate new content while also pointing out success strategies. Moreover, this paper discusses whether memes can transcend the light-hearted and playful mood they mirror and become biting and sharp cultural comments. The study also uses the concept of multimodality and stresses how the text interacts with image, discussing three types of relations between the two: symmetry, amplification, and contradiction. We will furthermore show that memes are cultural artifacts and virtual tropes highly dependent on context and societal issues by using a corpus of memes created related to the COVID-19 pandemic. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=context" title="context">context</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computer-mediated%20communication" title=" computer-mediated communication"> computer-mediated communication</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=memes" title=" memes"> memes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multimodality" title=" multimodality"> multimodality</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136117/internet-memes-a-mirror-of-culture-and-society" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136117.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">184</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">76</span> Monitoring of Hydrological Parameters in the Alexandra Jukskei Catchment in South Africa</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vhuhwavho%20Gadisi">Vhuhwavho Gadisi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rebecca%20Alowo"> Rebecca Alowo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=German%20Nkhonjera"> German Nkhonjera</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> It has been noted that technical programming for handling groundwater resources is not accessible. The lack of these systems hinders groundwater management processes necessary for decision-making through monitoring and evaluation regarding the Jukskei River of the Crocodile River (West) Basin in Johannesburg, South Africa. Several challenges have been identified in South Africa's Jukskei Catchment concerning groundwater management. Some of those challenges will include the following: Gaps in data records; there is a need for training and equipping of monitoring staff; formal accreditation of monitoring capacities and equipment; there is no access to regulation terms (e.g., meters). Taking into consideration necessities and human requirements as per typical densities in various regions of South Africa, there is a need to construct several groundwater level monitoring stations in a particular segment; the available raw data on groundwater level should be converted into consumable products for example, short reports on delicate areas (e.g., Dolomite compartments, wetlands, aquifers, and sole source) and considering the increasing civil unrest there has been vandalism and theft of groundwater monitoring infrastructure. GIS was employed at the catchment level to plot the relationship between those identified groundwater parameters in the catchment area and the identified borehole. GIS-based maps were designed for groundwater monitoring to be pretested on one borehole in the Jukskei catchment. This data will be used to establish changes in the borehole compared to changes in the catchment area according to identified parameters. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GIS" title="GIS">GIS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monitoring" title=" monitoring"> monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jukskei" title=" Jukskei"> Jukskei</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=catchment" title=" catchment"> catchment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/165746/monitoring-of-hydrological-parameters-in-the-alexandra-jukskei-catchment-in-south-africa" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/165746.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">94</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">75</span> Online Assessment in the Ligh of Resiliance</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ren%C3%A1ta%20Nagy">Renáta Nagy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Csongor"> Alexandra Csongor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vilmos%20Warta"> Vilmos Warta</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The presentation aims at eliciting insight into the results of ongoing research regarding evolving trends and attitudes towards online assessment of English and other languages. The focus pinpoints online as one of the most trending forms available during the global pandemic. The study was first initiated in 2019 in which its main target was to reveal the intriguing question of students’ and assessors’ attitudes towards online assessment. The research questions the attitudes towards the latest trends, possible online task types, and their advantages and disadvantages through an in-depth experimental process currently undergoing implementation. Material and methods include surveys, needs and wants analysis, and thorough investigations regarding candidates’ and assessors’ attitudes towards online tests in the field of languages. Over 400 respondents from more than 28 countries participated in the survey, which gives us an international and intercultural insight into how students with different cultural and educational background deal with the evolving online world. The results show the pandemic’s impact, which brought the slumbering online world of assessing roaring alive, fully operational, and now bears phenomenal relevance in today’s global education. Undeniably, the results can be used as a perspective in a vast array of contents. The survey hypothesized the generation of the 21st century expect everything readily available online, however, questions whether they are ready for this challenge are lurking in the background. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=assessment" title="assessment">assessment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=english" title=" english"> english</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intercultural" title=" intercultural"> intercultural</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=international" title=" international"> international</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=online" title=" online"> online</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=testing" title=" testing"> testing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160277/online-assessment-in-the-ligh-of-resiliance" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/160277.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">79</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">74</span> Bird-Adapted Filter for Avian Species and Individual Identification Systems Improvement</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ladislav%20Ptacek">Ladislav Ptacek</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jan%20Vanek"> Jan Vanek</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jan%20Eisner"> Jan Eisner</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Pruchova"> Alexandra Pruchova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pavel%20Linhart"> Pavel Linhart</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ludek%20Muller"> Ludek Muller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dana%20Jirotkova"> Dana Jirotkova</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> One of the essential steps of avian song processing is signal filtering. Currently, the standard methods of filtering are the Mel Bank Filter or linear filter distribution. In this article, a new type of bank filter called the Bird-Adapted Filter is introduced; whereby the signal filtering is modifiable, based upon a new mathematical description of audiograms for particular bird species or order, which was named the Avian Audiogram Unified Equation. According to the method, filters may be deliberately distributed by frequency. The filters are more concentrated in bands of higher sensitivity where there is expected to be more information transmitted and vice versa. Further, it is demonstrated a comparison of various filters for automatic individual recognition of chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita). The average Equal Error Rate (EER) value for Linear bank filter was 16.23%, for Mel Bank Filter 18.71%, the Bird-Adapted Filter gave 14.29%, and Bird-Adapted Filter with 1/3 modification was 12.95%. This approach would be useful for practical use in automatic systems for avian species and individual identification. Since the Bird-Adapted Filter filtration is based on the measured audiograms of particular species or orders, selecting the distribution according to the avian vocalization provides the most precise filter distribution to date. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=avian%20audiogram" title="avian audiogram">avian audiogram</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bird%20individual%20identification" title=" bird individual identification"> bird individual identification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bird%20song%20processing" title=" bird song processing"> bird song processing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bird%20species%20recognition" title=" bird species recognition"> bird species recognition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=filter%20bank" title=" filter bank"> filter bank</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71830/bird-adapted-filter-for-avian-species-and-individual-identification-systems-improvement" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71830.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">387</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">73</span> Hybrid Lateral-Directional Robust Flight Control with Propulsive Systems</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Monteiro">Alexandra Monteiro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K.%20Bousson"> K. The failure of these systems may lead to severe or even fatal crashes. These failures resulted in increased popularity for research activities on propulsion control in the last decades. The present work deals with a hybrid control architecture in which the propulsion-controlled vehicle maintains its traditional control surfaces, addressing the issue of robust lateral-directional dynamics control. The challenges stem from the parameter uncertainties in the stability and control derivatives and some unknown terms in the flight dynamics model. Two approaches are implemented and tested: linear quadratic regulation with robustness characteristics and H∞ control. The problem is centered on roll-yaw controller design with full state-feedback, which is able to deal with a standalone propulsion control mode as well as a hybrid mode combining both propulsion control and conventional control surface concepts while maintaining the original flight maneuverability characteristics. The results for both controllers emphasized very good control performances; however, the H∞ controller showed higher stabilization rates and robustness albeit with a slightly higher control magnitude than using the linear quadratic regulator. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=robust%20propulsion%20control" title="robust propulsion control">robust propulsion control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=h-infinity%20control" title=" h-infinity control"> h-infinity control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lateral-directional%20flight%20dynamics" title=" lateral-directional flight dynamics"> lateral-directional flight dynamics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parameter%20uncertainties" title=" parameter uncertainties"> parameter uncertainties</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/111523/hybrid-lateral-directional-robust-flight-control-with-propulsive-systems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/111523.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">153</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">72</span> Strategies for Student Recruitment in Civil Engineering</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Diogo%20Ribeiro">Diogo Ribeiro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Teresa%20Neto"> Teresa Neto</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ricardo%20Santos"> Ricardo Santos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Portela"> Maria Portela</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Trinc%C3%A3o"> Alexandra Trincão</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This article describes a set of innovating student recruitment strategies in a 1st cycle course of Civil Engineering, in particular the Civil Engineering Degree from the School of Engineering - Polytechnic of Porto (ISEP-PP). The strategies described were two-fold, targeting, for one, the increment on the number of admissions for the degree’s first year and two, promoting the re-entry of students who, for whatever reason, interrupted their studies. For the first objective, teacher-student binomials were set, whilst for the second, personalized contacts and assistance were provided. The main initiatives were promoted by the team of degree directors and were upheld with the participation and in consonance with the School’s external relations office. These initiatives were put forward as an attempt to minimize the impact of a national and international crisis on the AEC industry when the sustainability of the course was at risk. The implementation of these strategies was assessed on basis of a statistical analysis of the data collected from official sources and by surveys promoted. The results showed that the re-entry boost of former students, attending classes scattered on the three curricular years, secured registrations on some Curricular Units (UC’s) which more than doubled their numbers. Accompanied by a still incipient but regained interest on Civil Engineering it was possible in the short span of three years to reset the number of new students from less than 10 to the currently maximum allowed of 75, and so invert the tendency of an abrupt decline on the total number of students enrolled on the degree. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=civil%20engineering" title="civil engineering">civil engineering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monitoring" title=" monitoring"> monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=performance%20indicators" title=" performance indicators"> performance indicators</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strategies" title=" strategies"> strategies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=student%20recruitment" title=" student recruitment"> student recruitment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80716/strategies-for-student-recruitment-in-civil-engineering" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/80716.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">213</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">71</span> Characterization of Zn-Ni Alloy Elaborated Under Low and High Magnetic Field Immersed in Corrosive Medium</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sabiha%20Chouchane">Sabiha Chouchane</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Azzedine%20Hani"> Azzedine Hani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jean-Paul%20Chopart"> Jean-Paul Chopart</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Levesque"> Alexandra Levesque</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The electrodeposition of Zn-Ni alloy is mostly studied for its high degree of corrosion and mechanical properties. In this work, the zinc–nickel alloy coatings elaborated from sulfate bath have been carried out under low and high applied magnetic field. The effect of alloy stuctural parameters upon corrosion behavior is studied. It has been found that the magnetically induced convection changes the phase composition, promoting the zinc phase in spite of the γ-Ni₅Zn₂₁. Low magnetic field acts also on the morphology of the deposits as a levelling agent and a refiner by lowering the deposit roughness Ra and the spot size. For alloy obtained with low magnetic field (up to 1T) superimposition, surface morphology modification has no significant influence on corrosion behavior whereas for low nickel content alloy, the modification of phase composition, induced by applied magnetic field, favours higher polarization resistance. When high magnetic field amplitude is involved (up to12T), the phase composition modifications are the same that for low applied B and the morphology is not largely modified. In this case, the hydrogen reduction current dramatically decreases that leads to a large shift of the corrosion potential. It is suggested that the surface reactivity of electrodeposited alloys depends on the magnetically induced convection that is efficient during the codeposition process. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=magnetic%20field" title="magnetic field">magnetic field</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zn-Ni%20alloy" title=" Zn-Ni alloy"> Zn-Ni alloy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corrosion" title=" corrosion"> corrosion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corrosive%20medium" title=" corrosive medium"> corrosive medium</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/184683/characterization-of-zn-ni-alloy-elaborated-under-low-and-high-magnetic-field-immersed-in-corrosive-medium" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/184683.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">50</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">70</span> Intimate Partner Offenders and Prevalent Affective-Cognitive Functioning: A Study with Inmates</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Serra">Alexandra Serra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nadia%20Torr%C3%A3o"> Nadia Torrão</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rui%20G.%20Ser%C3%B4dio"> Rui G. As expected, results show high levels of legitimatory beliefs, significant difficulties of emotional regulation and a set of high levels of early maladaptive schemas that clearly compromise the inmates affective-cognitive functioning. The most prevalent set of maladaptive schemas are associated with depression, anxiety, hostility, reduced ability to empathize and, dependence on the approval of others, which, combined, may trigger aggressive responses towards the intimate’s partner. Being victimized in their childhood and having committing murder are not differentiating factors on the measures we analyzed, but alcohol consumption may be associated with an intensification of domestic violence legitimatory beliefs. In the discussion of our findings, we compare the pattern of the psychosocial measures we used with the equivalent results obtained with convicted individuals that attend a community compulsory program, specifically designed for domestic violence perpetrators. We also highlight the importance of implementing specialized interventions in prison settings focusing on an evidence-based-practice. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=affective-cognitive%20functioning" title="affective-cognitive functioning">affective-cognitive functioning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intimate%20partner%20offenders" title=" intimate partner offenders"> intimate partner offenders</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=psychological%20research%20with%20inmates" title=" psychological research with inmates"> psychological research with inmates</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/27742/intimate-partner-offenders-and-prevalent-affective-cognitive-functioning-a-study-with-inmates" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/27742.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">416</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">69</span> Prevalent Affective-Cognitive Functioning of Intimate Partner Offenders: A study with Inmates</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandra%20Serra">Alexandra Serra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nair%20Torr%C3%A3o"> Nair Torrão</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rui%20G.%20Ser%C3%B4dio"> Rui G. It has been shown that a single administration of the studied compounds did not have a statistically significant effect in the test. In the conditions of multiple intraperitoneal administration of the studied pyrimidine derivatives, the compound L-ascorbate, 1-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4.6-dimethyl-1.2-dihydropyrimidine-2-one had the lowest toxicity and the most pronounced actoprotective effect. Introduction in the dose of 20 mg/kg caused a statistically significant increase 440 % in the duration of swimming of rats on the 14th day of the experiment compared with the control group. Multiple administration of the compound in the conditions of physical load did not affect leucopoiesis but stimulates erythropoiesis resulting in an increase in the number of erythrocytes and a hemoglobin level. The substance introduction under mixed exhausting loads prevented such changes of blood biochemical parameters as reduction of glucose, increased of urea and lactic acid levels, what indicates improvement in the animals' tolerability of loads and an anti-catabolic effect of the compound. Absence of hepato and cardiotoxic effects of the substance has been shown.
