In the Gospel of John, the holiness of the trinity constitutes the theological environment for the code of holiness and forms the basis for the exhortation to holiness. This research deals with the en route to and character of holiness. The research starts with a concise characterisation of Jesus for the en route and character of holiness is embedded in the character of Jesus. Secondly, reference is made to the mimesis theories of Plato, Aristotle and Ricoeur. This facilitates a better understanding of the en route and character of holiness in John. Thirdly, Jesus could exhorted them to follow him because he has set them an example (ὑπόδειγμα) in showing (καθώς) them the way. Therefore, within the Christian tradition there are discussions of a call to holiness and not only to moral perfection, where holiness rests above all on the fact of God's chosenness, to which the Christians respond by changing concrete lives. This article shall highlight several main characteristics of holiness as a model of Christian existence important to the Church in the third millennium. Firstly, a biblical-theological account of holiness shall be presented as a landmark of understanding holiness in the Church and in theology. Then, the fundamental dimension of holiness shall be introduced which is the principle of giftedness, opposed in a certain contrast to the widely present principle of achievement and perfection. The third part shall highlight the exemplary character of holiness, which has the ability to attract others, thus realizing in the life of the Church its main character of holiness that comes from God Himself. In their response to God, Christians find a model among the saints who have accepted various means of consecration within the Church and given God an answer to His call to holiness. Finally, the importance of a personal response to the call to holiness shall be indicated. The goal of Christian holiness is to unite with God, and on the way to this union, the effort of every individual who manifests himself primarily in accepting God's gifts and His grace is also needed. The immanence and ‘lived experiences’ of the divine are fostered by how the immanence of the divine is expounded in terms of the familia Dei: God as Father, the Logos as Son of God, believers as Children of God and the Spirit-Paraclete as the one who constitutes the family and educates the children in the family. Therefore, in this article, the familia Dei will be the facilitating hermeneutical principle used to examine the divine fellowship as well as the ‘lived experiences’ and immanence of the divine in early Christian everyday living. John’s reflection on perichoresis lies embedded in a ‘fellowship’ perspective. The divine fellowship is investigated from the four perspectives of how the divine is identified in John: life in the familia Dei, love in the familia Dei, unity in the familia Dei and glorification John’ Gospel is interpreted in this short commentary is both that of post-modernity and that of Eastern Christianity. This latter “traditional” context, however, has wider ecumenical implications. Starting from the theological background of the 4th Gospel and the eschatological framework of its theology (11: 51-52), it focuses on the profound meaning of the so-called sacramental (or anti-sacramental) pericope. First, the Eucharistic theology of ch. 6. Second, the diaconal dimension of the Eucharist in ch. 13. Third, the wider connotations of the Anointing of Jesus pericope in ch. 12 (1-8). And finally, the High-Priestly (Eucharistic) prayer in ch. 17 with its consequences for the unity of humankind. John offers a dynamic reinterpretation of the traditional (Pauline and synoptic) understanding of the Eucharist as a unique rite regarding the relationship between God, the Church and the world, thus providing an excellent basis for reflection on unity, reconciliation, communion, sharing and diaconal service. The short commentary concludes with underlining the ecclesial and diaconal dimension of the Eucharist as a communion event; an act of unity and not of personal devotion; an act of diakonia and sharing, and not a sacramentalistic quasi-maginal rite; an expression of the Church as the people (laos) and household (oikos) of God and as the Body of Christ mystically united with its head, and not a mere cultic and/or witnessing institution. If one pushes these conclusions a little further, one can easily argue that the relationship of God’s people and the world is a liturgical relationship; one can even say that daily life in society and the world is a Eucharistic liturgy through which this unity of humankind in God and the preliminary manifestation of the future kingdom are made present.
