In this section, we will examine the women’s movements as defined during 65 expert interviews conducted in order to analyse the status of women’s movements in Turkey and the political response to such movements and to the notion of gender with a regard to the multicultural, complex structure of the society in Turkey composed of multiple identities. Definitions suggested by women's and gender political experts A definition of the term "women's movements" that respects the transnational, pluralist social forms of such movements should take into account both the breadth of cultural and social variation and the state of research on (New) Social Movements 1 and, in doing so, the definition should not be normatively judgmental, but rather empirically open. Based on the definition provided by Helma Lutz, Lenz (2010: 867-868) defines women's movements as follows: Mobilising collective actors who develop in different socio-historical milieus. In these, persons-primarily women-advocate a more substantial change in gender relations and the associated social inequality and devaluation. They criticise dominant gender models, norms and discourses and design alternatives that may lead to new norms. Book review appeared at E-International Relations, 16 February 2014, 2014</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The book, written by Ömer Çaha who is a professor of political science and who has been working on women’s issues and women’s movement for many years, is an in-depth summary of the development of the civil society in Turkey and the role that women’s organizations and feminist movements played in this growing civil sphere. Students of political science, women’s studies and sociology might specifically benefit from the book. Since the title is Women and Civil Society in Turkey: Women’s Movements in a Muslim Society, one also wonders about the development of civil society and feminist ideas in other Muslim societies. Turkey is a country of at times contradictory worldviews – one more oriented towards the west and European mode of enlightenment and life style and the other being more oriented towards Islam and the Middle East. Abstract: The anti-gender movement has been publicly pursuing its quarrel against the social, academic, and political contexts of gender. Thus, it has also been constituting a basis of activism for fundamentalists, nationalists, and conservatives. In this article, we argue that recent instances show the movement has a reciprocal strategy, which articulates its structural, civil, and political aspects of counter-mobilization. After explaining the fundamentals of these aspects, we focus on the case of Turkey to embody our theoretical discussions. One group, called second wave feminists i , insists on the concept of solidarity by claiming relations among women should be based on their commonalities such as sisterhood, womanhood or experiencing the patriarchal system in similar ways.
