and the key<MG2807> to the shaft<MG5421> of the abyss<MG12> was given<MG1325> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>He opened<MG455> the shaft<MG5421> of the abyss<MG12>, and smoke<MG2586> ascended<MG305> out of the shaft<MG5421> like<MG5613> the smoke<MG2586> of a great<MG3173> furnace<MG2575>; and the sun<MG2246> and the air<MG109> were darkened<MG4656> from the smoke<MG2586> of the shaft<MG5421>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> out of the smoke<MG2586> came<MG1831> locusts<MG200> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>upon the earth<MG1093>, and power<MG1849> was given<MG1325> them, as the scorpions<MG4651> of the earth<MG1093> have<MG2192> power<MG1849>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>They were told<MG3004> not to hurt<MG91> the grass<MG5528> of the earth<MG1093>, nor<MG3761> any<MG3956> green<MG5515> thing<MG5515>, nor<MG3761> any<MG3956> tree<MG1186>, but only<MG1487, 3361> the people<MG444> who<MG3748> do not have<MG2192> the seal<MG4973> of God<MG2316> on their foreheads<MG3359>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>they were not permitted<MG1325> to kill<MG615> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>anyone<MG846>, but to torment<MG928> for five<MG4002> months<MG3376>; and their torment<MG929> was like<MG5613> the torment<MG929> of a scorpion<MG4651> when<MG3752> it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>stings<MG3817> a person<MG444>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And in those<MG1565> days<MG2250> people<MG444> will seek<MG2212> death<MG2288> and will not find<MG2147> it; they will long<MG1937> to die<MG599>, and death<MG2288> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>will flee<MG5343> from them! <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>appearance<MG3667> of the locusts<MG200> was like<MG3664> horses<MG2462> prepared<MG2090> for battle<MG4171>; and on their heads<MG2776> appeared<MG5613> to be crowns<MG4735> like<MG3664> gold<MG5557>, and their faces<MG4383> were like<MG5613> human<MG444> faces<MG4383>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>They had<MG2192> hair<MG2359> like<MG5613> the hair<MG2359> of women<MG1135>, and their teeth<MG3599> were like<MG5613> <i>the teeth</i> of lions<MG3023>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>They had<MG2192> breastplates<MG2382> like<MG5613> breastplates<MG2382> of iron<MG4603>; and the sound<MG5456> of their wings<MG4420> was like<MG5613> the sound<MG5456> of chariots<MG716>, of many<MG4183> horses<MG2462> rushing<MG5143> to battle<MG4171>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>They have<MG2192> tails<MG3769> like<MG3664> scorpions<MG4651>, and stings<MG2759>; and in their tails<MG3769> is their power<MG1849> to hurt<MG91> people<MG444> for five<MG4002> months<MG3376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>They have<MG2192> as king<MG935> over<MG1909> them, the angel<MG32a> of the abyss<MG12>; his name<MG3686> in Hebrew<MG1447> is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>Abaddon<MG3>, and in the Greek<MG1673> he has<MG2192> the name<MG3686> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Apollyon<MG623>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The first<MG1520> woe<MG3759> has passed<MG565>; behold<MG2400>, two<MG1417> woes<MG3759> are still<MG2089> coming<MG2064> after<MG3326> these<MG3778> things<MG3778>. <p class="hdg">The Sixth Trumpet: Army from the East</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> the sixth<MG1623> angel<MG32a> sounded<MG4537>, and I heard<MG191> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>a voice<MG5456> from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>four<MG5064> horns<MG2768> of the golden<MG5552> altar<MG2379> which is before<MG1799> God<MG2316>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>saying<MG3004> to the sixth<MG1623> angel<MG32a> who had<MG2192> the trumpet<MG4536>, “Release<MG3089> the four<MG5064> angels<MG32a> who are bound<MG1210> at the great<MG3173> river<MG4215> Euphrates<MG2166>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the four<MG5064> angels<MG32a>, who had been prepared<MG2090> for the hour<MG5610> and day<MG2250> and month<MG3376> and year<MG1763>, were released<MG3089>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> they would kill<MG615> a third<MG5154> of mankind<MG444>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>The number<MG706> of the armies<MG4753> of the horsemen<MG2461> was two<MG1365a, 3461> hundred<MG1365a, 3461> million<MG1365a, 3461>; I heard<MG191> the number<MG706> of them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And this<MG3779> is<MG3779> how<MG3779> I saw<MG3708> in my vision<MG3706> the horses<MG2462> and those<MG3588> who sat<MG2521> on them: <i>the riders</i> had<MG2192> breastplates<MG2382> <i>the color</i> of fire<MG4447>, of hyacinth<MG5191>, and of<MG2306> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>brimstone<MG2306>; and the heads<MG2776> of the horses<MG2462> are like<MG5613> the heads<MG2776> of lions<MG3023>; and out of their mouths<MG4750> *came<MG1607> fire<MG4442> and smoke<MG2586> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>brimstone<MG2303>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>A third<MG5154> of mankind<MG444> was killed<MG615> by these<MG3778> three<MG5140> plagues<MG4127>, by the fire<MG4442>, the smoke<MG2586>, and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>brimstone<MG2303> which came<MG1607> out<MG1607> of their mouths<MG4750>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>For the power<MG1849> of the horses<MG2462> is in their mouths<MG4750> and in their tails<MG3769>; for their tails<MG3769> are like<MG3664> serpents<MG3789> and have<MG2192> heads<MG2776>, and with them they do<MG91> harm<MG91>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/revelation/9-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>The rest<MG3062> of mankind<MG444>, who<MG3739> were not killed<MG615> by these<MG3778> plagues<MG4127>, did not repent<MG3340> of the works<MG2041> of their hands<MG5495> so<MG2443> as<MG2443> not to worship<MG4352> demons<MG1140> and the idols<MG1497> of gold<MG5552>, silver<MG693>, brass<MG5470>, stone<MG3035>, and wood<MG3585>, which<MG3739> can<MG1410> neither<MG3777> see<MG991> nor<MG3777> hear<MG191> nor<MG3777> walk<MG4043>;
