Historically, this is set during the time when Babylon was rising as a dominant power, threatening the kingdom of Judah. The call to gather belongings suggests urgency and the need for readiness, similar to the Israelites' preparation for the Exodus from Egypt (Exodus 12:11). It also echoes the theme of temporary dwelling, reminding believers that their true home is not in earthly possessions but in God’s eternal kingdom (Hebrews 13:14).
you who live under siege
The phrase "under siege" refers to the historical context of Jerusalem being surrounded by Babylonian forces. This siege would eventually lead to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 BC. Living under siege implies a state of distress and impending disaster, highlighting the consequences of the people's disobedience and idolatry. It serves as a warning and a call to repentance, similar to the warnings given by other prophets like Isaiah and Ezekiel. The siege also foreshadows the spiritual siege humanity faces due to sin, pointing to the need for deliverance through Jesus Christ, who offers salvation and peace (John 16:33).
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jeremiah
The prophet who conveyed God's messages to the people of Judah, warning them of impending judgment due to their idolatry and disobedience.

2. Judah
The southern kingdom of Israel, which was under threat from Babylonian invasion due to its persistent sin and rebellion against God.

3. Babylonian Siege
The historical context of this verse is the Babylonian threat and eventual siege of Jerusalem, leading to the exile of the Jewish people.
Teaching Points
Urgency of Repentance
Jeremiah's call to "gather up your belongings" signifies the urgency of repentance and readiness to face the consequences of sin. Now the prophet returns to his main theme, the devastation of the land of Israel as the penalty of that sin. He begins with a vivid touch in the picture of utter misery. The daughter of Israel (the word "inhabitant" is feminine), sitting as in a besieged fortress, is to gather up her goods and chattels into one small bundle (the English "wares" suggests the idea of trade, which is foreign to the context), and with that as the sole remnant of her possessions, to go forth into exile. The whole phrase has something of a proverbial type, like our "bag and baggage" or the collige sarcinulas et exi ("take up your packages and begone") of Juven. Sat. vi. 146.

Pulpit Commentary
Verses 17-22. - This passage connects itself immediately with Jeremiah 9, where the invasion of Judah and the dispersion of its inhabitants have been foretold. The Jewish people is then introduced, lamenting her sad fate, but expressing resignation. Verse 17. - Gather up thy wares.
