Take<MH3947> all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> of war<MH4421> with you. Arise<MH6965>, go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Ai<MH5857>; see<MH7200>, I have handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to you the king<MH4428> of Ai<MH5857>, his people<MH5971a>, his city<MH5892b>, and his land<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>You shall do<MH6213a> to Ai<MH5857> and its king<MH4428> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> you did<MH6213a> to Jericho<MH3405> and its king<MH4428>; you shall take<MH962> only<MH7534b> its spoils<MH7998> and its cattle<MH929> as plunder<MH962> for yourselves. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Set<MH7760> an ambush<MH693> for the city<MH5892b> behind<MH4480, 310> it.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So Joshua<MH3091> rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> with all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> of war<MH4421> to go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Ai<MH5857>; and Joshua<MH3091> chose<MH977> thirty<MH7970> thousand<MH505> men<MH376>, valiant<MH2428> warriors<MH1368>, and sent<MH7971> them out<MH7971> at night<MH3915>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>He commanded<MH6680> them, saying<MH559>, “See<MH7200>, you are going to ambush<MH693> the city<MH5892b> from behind<MH310> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>it. Do not go<MH7368> very<MH3966> far<MH7368> from the city<MH5892b>, but all<MH3605> of you be ready<MH3559>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then I and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> are with me will approach<MH7126> the city<MH5892b>. And when<MH3588> they come<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH7122> us as <i>they did</i> the first<MH7223> <i>time,</i> we will flee<MH5127> before<MH6440> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>They will come<MH3318> out<MH3318> after<MH310> us until<MH5704> we have lured<MH5423> them away<MH5423> from the city<MH5892b>, for they will say<MH559>, ‘<i>They</i> are fleeing<MH5127> before<MH6440> us just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> <i>they did</i> the first<MH7223> time<MH7223>.’ So we will flee<MH5127> before<MH6440> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then you shall rise<MH6965> from <i>your</i> ambush<MH693> and take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of the city<MH5892b>, for the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> will hand<MH3027, 5414> it over<MH5414> to you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then it will be when you have seized<MH8610> the city<MH5892b>, that you shall set<MH3341> the city<MH5892b> on fire<MH784>. You shall do<MH6213a> <i>it</i> in accordance with the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>. See<MH7200>, I have commanded<MH6680> you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So Joshua<MH3091> sent<MH7971> them away<MH7971>, and they went<MH1980> to the <i>place of</i> ambush<MH3993> and remained<MH3427> between<MH996> Bethel<MH1008> and Ai<MH5857>, on the west<MH3220> side<MH3220> of Ai<MH5857>; but Joshua<MH3091> spent<MH3885a> that night<MH3915> among<MH8432> the people<MH5971a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now Joshua<MH3091> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> and mustered<MH6485> the people<MH5971a>, and he went<MH5927> up<MH5927> with the elders<MH2205> of Israel<MH3478> before<MH6440> the people<MH5971a> to Ai<MH5857>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> of war<MH4421> who<MH834> <i>were</i> with him went<MH5927> up<MH5927> and approached<MH5066>, and arrived<MH935> in front<MH5048> of the city<MH5892b>; and they camped<MH2583> on the north<MH6828> side<MH6828> of Ai<MH5857>. And <i>there was</i> a valley<MH1516> between<MH996> him and Ai<MH5857>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then he took<MH3947> about five<MH2568> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> and set<MH7760> them in<MH693> ambush<MH693> between<MH996> Bethel<MH1008> and Ai<MH5857>, on the west<MH3220> side<MH3220> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So they stationed<MH7760> the people<MH5971a>, all<MH3605> the army<MH4264> that was on the north<MH6828> side<MH6828> of the city<MH5892b>, and its rear<MH6119> guard<MH6119> on the west<MH3220> side<MH3220> of the city<MH5892b>, and Joshua<MH3091> spent<MH1980> that night<MH3915> in the midst<MH8432> of the valley<MH6010>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when the king<MH4428> of Ai<MH5857> saw<MH7200> <i>them,</i> that the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b> hurried<MH4116> and got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925>, and went<MH3318> out<MH3318> to meet<MH7122> Israel<MH3478> in battle<MH4421>, he and all<MH3605> his people<MH5971a> at the appointed<MH4150> place<MH4150> before<MH6440> the desert<MH6160> plain<MH6160>. But he did not know<MH3045> that <i>there was</i> an ambush<MH693> against him behind<MH4480, 310> the city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Joshua<MH3091> and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>pretended<MH5060> to<MH5060> be<MH5060> defeated<MH5060> before<MH6440> them, and fled<MH5127> by the way<MH1870> of the wilderness<MH4057b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were in the city<MH5892b> were called<MH2199> together<MH2199> to pursue<MH7291> them, and they pursued<MH7291> Joshua<MH3091> and were lured<MH5423> away<MH5423> from the city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So not a man<MH376> was left<MH7604> in Ai<MH5857> or Bethel<MH1008>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>but they had all gone<MH3318> out<MH3318> after<MH310> Israel<MH3478>, and they left<MH5800a> the city<MH5892b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>unguarded<MH6605a> and pursued<MH7291> Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Joshua<MH3091>, “Reach<MH5186> out<MH5186> with the sword<MH3591> that is in your hand<MH3027> toward<MH413> Ai<MH5857>, for I will hand<MH5414, 3027> it over<MH5414> to you.” So Joshua<MH3091> reached<MH5186> out<MH5186> with the sword<MH3591> that was in his hand<MH3027> toward<MH413> the city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then the <i>men in</i> ambush<MH693> rose<MH6965> quickly<MH4120> from their place<MH4725>, and when he had reached<MH5186> out<MH5186> with his hand<MH3027>, they ran<MH7323> and entered<MH935> the city<MH5892b> and captured<MH3920> it, and they quickly<MH4116> set<MH3341> the city<MH5892b> on fire<MH784>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>When the men<MH376> of Ai<MH5857> turned<MH6437> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>back<MH310> and looked<MH7200>, behold<MH2009>, the smoke<MH6227> of the city<MH5892b> ascended<MH5927> to the sky<MH8064>, and they had<MH1961> no<MH3808> place<MH3027> to flee<MH5127> this<MH2008> way<MH2008> or that, for the people<MH5971a> who had been fleeing<MH5127> to the wilderness<MH4057b> turned<MH2015> against<MH413> the pursuers<MH7291>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>When Joshua<MH3091> and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> saw<MH7200> that the <i>men in</i> ambush<MH693> had captured<MH3920> the city<MH5892b> and that the smoke<MH6227> of the city<MH5892b> ascended<MH5927>, they turned<MH7725> back<MH7725> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>killed<MH5221> the men<MH376> of Ai<MH5857>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>The others<MH428> came<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the city<MH5892b> to confront<MH7122> them, so that they were <i>trapped</i> in the midst<MH8432> of Israel<MH3478>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>some<MH428> on this<MH2088> side<MH2088> and some<MH428> on that side<MH2088>; and they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>killed<MH5221> them until<MH5704> there was not one <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>left<MH7604> who<MH8300> escaped<MH8300> or survived<MH6412a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But they captured<MH8610> the king<MH4428> of Ai<MH5857> alive<MH2416a> and brought<MH7126> him to Joshua<MH3091>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now when Israel<MH3478> had finished<MH3615> killing<MH2026> all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Ai<MH5857> in the field<MH7704> in the wilderness<MH4057b> where<MH834> they pursued<MH7291> them, and all<MH3605> of them had fallen<MH5307> by the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719> until<MH5704> they were destroyed<MH8552>, then all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> returned<MH7725> to Ai<MH5857> and struck<MH5221> it with the edge<MH6310> of the sword<MH2719>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> who fell<MH5307> that day<MH3117>, both<MH4480> men<MH376> and women<MH802>, were twelve<MH8147, 6240> thousand<MH505>—all<MH3605> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>people<MH376> of Ai<MH5857>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>For Joshua<MH3091> did not withdraw<MH7725> his hand<MH3027> with which<MH834> he reached<MH5186> out<MH5186> with the sword<MH3591> until<MH5704> he had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>utterly<MH2763a> destroyed<MH2763a> all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Ai<MH5857>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Israel<MH3478> took<MH962> only<MH7534b> the cattle<MH929> and the spoils<MH7998> of that city<MH5892b> as plunder<MH962> for themselves, in accordance with the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> which<MH834> He had commanded<MH6680> Joshua<MH3091>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So Joshua<MH3091> burned<MH8313> Ai<MH5857> and made<MH7760> it a refuse<MH8510> heap<MH8510> forever<MH5769>, a desolation<MH8077> until<MH5704> this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And he hanged<MH8518> the king<MH4428> of Ai<MH5857> on <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>a tree<MH6086> until<MH5704> evening<MH6153>; but at sunset<MH8121, 935> Joshua<MH3091> gave<MH6680> the command<MH6680> and they took<MH3381> his body<MH5038> down<MH3381> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>the tree<MH6086> and threw<MH7993> it at the entrance<MH6607> of the city<MH5892b> gate<MH8179>, and erected<MH6965> over<MH5921> it a large<MH1419> heap<MH1530> of stones<MH68> <i>that stands</i> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then<MH227> Joshua<MH3091> built<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> to the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, on Mount<MH2022> Ebal<MH5858c>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> Moses<MH4872> the servant<MH5650> of the LORD<MH3068> had commanded<MH6680> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, as it is written<MH3789> in the Book<MH5612> of the Law<MH8451> of Moses<MH4872>, an altar<MH4196> of uncut<MH8003> stones<MH68> on which<MH834> no<MH3808> one had wielded<MH5130> an iron<MH1270> <i>tool;</i> and they offered<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a> on it to the LORD<MH3068>, and sacrificed<MH2076> peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And he wrote<MH3789> there<MH8033> on the stones<MH68> a copy<MH4932> of the Law<MH8451> of Moses<MH4872>, which<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>he had written<MH3789>, in the presence<MH6440> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/8-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> with their elders<MH2205>, officers<MH7860>, and their judges<MH8199> were standing<MH5975> on both<MH4480, 2088> sides<MH4480, 2088> of the ark<MH727> before<MH5048> the Levitical<MH3881> priests<MH3548> who carried<MH5375> the ark<MH727> of the covenant<MH1285> of the LORD<MH3068>, the stranger<MH1616> as well as the native<MH249>.
