Because<MH4480, 6440> of Midian<MH4080> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> made<MH6213a> for themselves the dens<MH4492> which<MH834> were in the mountains<MH2022> and the caves<MH4631> and the strongholds<MH4679>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>For whenever<MH1961, 518> Israel<MH3478> had sown<MH2232>, the Midianites<MH4080> would come<MH5927> up<MH5927> with the Amalekites<MH6002> and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>people<MH1121> of the east<MH6924a> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>march<MH5927> against<MH5921> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So they would camp<MH2583> against<MH5921> them and destroy<MH7843> the produce<MH2981> of the earth<MH776> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>as far<MH5704, 935> as Gaza<MH5804a>, and leave<MH7604> no<MH3808> sustenance<MH4241> in Israel<MH3478>, nor a sheep<MH7716>, ox<MH7794>, or donkey<MH2543>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For they would come<MH5927> up<MH5927> with their livestock<MH4735> and their tents<MH168>, they would come<MH935> in<MH935> like locusts<MH697> in number<MH7230>, <i>and both</i> they and their camels<MH1581> were innumerable<MH369, 4557>; and they came<MH935> into the land<MH776> to ruin<MH7843> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So Israel<MH3478> was brought<MH1809> very<MH3966> low<MH1809> because<MH4480, 6440> of Midian<MH4080>, and the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> cried<MH2199> out<MH2199> to the LORD<MH3068>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when<MH3588> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> cried<MH2199> out<MH2199> to the LORD<MH3068> on account<MH182> of Midian<MH4080>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>that the LORD<MH3068> sent<MH7971> a prophet<MH5030> to the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, and he said<MH559> to them, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: &#8216;It was I who brought<MH5927> you up<MH5927> from Egypt<MH4714>, and brought<MH3318> you out<MH3318> of the house<MH1004> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>slavery<MH5650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And I rescued<MH5337> you from the hands<MH3027> of the Egyptians<MH4714>, and from the hands<MH3027> of all<MH3605> your oppressors<MH3905>, and I drove<MH1644> them out<MH1644> from you and gave<MH5414> you their land<MH776>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and I said<MH559> to you, &#8220;I am the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>; you shall not fear<MH3372a> the gods<MH430> of the Amorites<MH567> in whose<MH834> land<MH776> you live<MH3427>.&#8221; But you have not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>obeyed<MH8085, 6963> Me.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="hdg">Gideon Is Visited</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH935> and sat<MH3427> under<MH8478> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>oak<MH424> that was in Ophrah<MH6084>, which<MH834> belonged to Joash<MH3060> the Abiezrite<MH33>, as his son<MH1121> Gideon<MH1439> was beating<MH2251> out<MH2251> wheat<MH2406> in the wine<MH1660> press<MH1660> in order to save<MH5127> <i>it</i> from the Midianites<MH4080>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> appeared<MH7200> to him and said<MH559> to him, &#8220;The LORD<MH3068> is with you, valiant<MH2428> warrior<MH1368>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then Gideon<MH1439> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;O<MH994a> my lord<MH113>, if the LORD<MH3068> is with us, why<MH4100> then has all<MH3605> this<MH2088> happened<MH4672> to<MH4672> us? And where<MH346> are all<MH3605> His miracles<MH6381> which<MH834> our fathers<MH1> told<MH5608> us about, saying<MH559>, &#8216;Did the LORD<MH3068> not bring<MH5927> us up<MH5927> from Egypt<MH4714>?&#8217; But now<MH6258> the LORD<MH3068> has abandoned<MH5203> us and handed<MH5414, 3709> us over<MH5414> to Midian<MH4080>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>looked<MH6437> at him and said<MH559>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> in this<MH2088> strength<MH3581b> of yours and save<MH3467> Israel<MH3478> from the hand<MH3709> of Midian<MH4080>. Have I not sent<MH7971> you?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But he said<MH559> to Him, &#8220;O<MH994a> Lord<MH136>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>how<MH4100> am I to save<MH3467> Israel<MH3478>? Behold<MH2009>, my family<MH505> is the least<MH1800b> in Manasseh<MH4519>, and I am the youngest<MH6810> in my father&#8217;s<MH1> house<MH1004>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Yet the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;I will certainly<MH3588> be with you, and you will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>defeat<MH5221> Midian<MH4080> as one<MH259> man<MH376>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Gideon said<MH559> to Him, &#8220;If<MH518> now<MH4994> I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in Your sight<MH5869>, then perform<MH6213a> for me a sign<MH226> that it is You speaking<MH1696> with me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Please<MH4994> do not depart<MH4185> from here<MH2088> until<MH5704> I come<MH935> <i>back</i> to You, and bring<MH3318> out<MH3318> my offering<MH4503> and lay<MH5117> it before<MH6440> You.&#8221; And He said<MH559>, &#8220;I will remain<MH3427> until<MH5704> you return<MH7725>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then Gideon<MH1439> went<MH935> in<MH935> and prepared<MH6213a> a young<MH1423, 5795> goat<MH1423, 5795> and unleavened<MH4682> bread<MH4682> <i>from</i> an <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>ephah<MH374> of flour<MH7058>; he put<MH7760> the meat<MH1320> in a basket<MH5536> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>and the broth<MH4839> in a pot<MH6517>, and brought<MH3318> <i>them</i> out<MH3318> to him under<MH8478> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>oak<MH424> and presented<MH5066> <i>them.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And the angel<MH4397> of God<MH430> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Take<MH3947> the meat<MH1320> and the unleavened<MH4682> bread<MH4682> and lay<MH5117> <i>them</i> on this<MH1975> rock<MH5553>, and pour<MH8210> out<MH8210> the broth<MH4839>.&#8221; And he did<MH6213a> so<MH3651>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> put<MH7971> out<MH7971> the end<MH7097a> of the staff<MH4938b> that was in his hand<MH3027> and touched<MH5060> the meat<MH1320> and the unleavened<MH4682> bread<MH4682>; and fire<MH784> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> from the rock<MH6697> and consumed<MH398> the meat<MH1320> and the unleavened<MH4682> bread<MH4682>. Then the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>vanished<MH1980> from his sight<MH5869>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>When Gideon<MH1439> perceived<MH7200> that he was the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>he said<MH559>, &#8220;Oh<MH162>, Lord<MH136> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>GOD<MH3068>! For I have seen<MH7200> the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> face<MH6440> to face<MH6440>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Peace<MH7965> to you, do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>; you shall not die<MH4191>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then Gideon<MH1439> built<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> there<MH8033> to the LORD<MH3068> and named<MH7121> it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>The LORD<MH3068> is Peace<MH7965>. To this<MH2088> day<MH3117> it is still<MH5750> in Ophrah<MH6084> of the Abiezrites<MH33>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now on the same<MH1931> night<MH3915> the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to him, &#8220;Take<MH3947> your father&#8217;s<MH1> bull<MH6499, 7794> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>and a second<MH8145> bull<MH6499> seven<MH7651> years<MH8141> old, and tear<MH2040> down<MH2040> the altar<MH4196> of Baal<MH1168a> which<MH834> belongs to your father<MH1>, and cut<MH3772> down<MH3772> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>Asherah<MH842> that is beside<MH5921> it; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>and build<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> to the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> on the top<MH7218> of this<MH2088> stronghold<MH4581> in an orderly<MH4634> way<MH4634>, and take<MH3947> a second<MH8145> bull<MH6499> and offer<MH5927> a burnt<MH5930a> offering<MH5930a> with the wood<MH6086> of the Asherah<MH842> which<MH834> you shall cut<MH3772> down<MH3772>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then Gideon<MH1439> took<MH3947> ten<MH6235> men<MH376> from his servants<MH5650> and did<MH6213a> as the LORD<MH3068> had spoken<MH1696> to him; and because<MH834> he was<MH3372a> too<MH4480> afraid<MH3372a> of his father&#8217;s<MH1> household<MH1004> and the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b> to do<MH6213a> it by day<MH3119>, he did<MH6213a> it by night<MH3915>. <p class="hdg">The Altar of Baal Destroyed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>When the people<MH376> of the city<MH5892b> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242>, behold<MH2009>, the altar<MH4196> of Baal<MH1168a> had been torn<MH5422> down<MH5422>, and the Asherah<MH842> which<MH834> had been beside<MH5921> it had been cut<MH3772> down<MH3772>, and the second<MH8145> bull<MH6499> had been offered<MH5927> on the altar<MH4196> which had been built<MH1129>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>So they said<MH559> to one<MH376> another<MH7453>, &#8220;Who<MH4310> did<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>?&#8221; And when they searched<MH1875> and inquired<MH1245>, they said<MH559>, &#8220;Gideon<MH1439> the son<MH1121> of Joash<MH3060> did<MH6213a> this<MH2088> thing<MH1697>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> of the city<MH5892b> said<MH559> to Joash<MH3060>, &#8220;Bring<MH3318> out<MH3318> your son<MH1121>, that he may die<MH4191>, for he has torn<MH5422> down<MH5422> the altar<MH4196> of Baal<MH1168a>, and indeed<MH3588>, he has cut<MH3772> down<MH3772> the Asherah<MH842> which<MH834> was beside<MH5921> it.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>But Joash<MH3060> said<MH559> to all<MH3605> who<MH834> stood<MH5975> against<MH5921> him, &#8220;Will you contend<MH7378> for Baal<MH1168a>, or<MH518> will you save<MH3467> him? Whoever<MH834> will contend<MH7378> for him shall be put<MH4191> to<MH4191> death<MH4191> by morning<MH1242>. If<MH518> he is a god<MH430>, let him contend<MH7378> for himself, since<MH3588> <i>someone</i> has torn<MH5422> down<MH5422> his altar<MH4196>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Therefore on that day<MH3117> he named<MH7121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>Gideon Jerubbaal<MH3378>, that is to say<MH559>, &#8220;Let Baal<MH1168a> contend<MH7378> against him,&#8221; because<MH3588> he had torn<MH5422> down<MH5422> his altar<MH4196>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Then all<MH3605> the Midianites<MH4080>, the Amalekites<MH6002>, and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>people<MH1121> of the east<MH6924a> assembled<MH622> together<MH3162>; and they crossed<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> and camped<MH2583> in the Valley<MH6010> of Jezreel<MH3157>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>So the Spirit<MH7307> of the LORD<MH3068> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>covered<MH3847> Gideon<MH1439> like<MH3847> clothing<MH3847>; and he blew<MH8628> a trumpet<MH7782>, and the Abiezrites<MH44> were called<MH2199> together<MH2199> to follow<MH310> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And he sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> throughout<MH3605> Manasseh<MH4519>, and they also<MH1571> were called<MH2199> together<MH2199> to follow<MH310> him; and he sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> to Asher<MH836>, Zebulun<MH2074>, and Naphtali<MH5321>, and they came<MH5927> up<MH5927> to meet<MH7122> them. <p class="hdg">Sign of the Fleece</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Then Gideon<MH1439> said<MH559> to God<MH430>, &#8220;If<MH518> You are going to save<MH3467> Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>through<MH3027> me, as You have spoken<MH1696>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>behold<MH2009>, I am putting<MH3322> a fleece<MH1492> of wool<MH6785> on the threshing<MH1637> floor<MH1637>. If<MH518> there is dew<MH2919> on the fleece<MH1492> only<MH905>, and it is dry<MH2721a> on all<MH3605> the ground<MH776>, then I will know<MH3045> that You will save<MH3467> Israel<MH3478> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>through<MH3027> me, as You have spoken<MH1696>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/6-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And it was so<MH3651>.
