d’Ibn Battuta sans s’étendre sur son Maroc natal, terre de contrastes, de paysages riches et infinis, de couleurs dansantes et chatoyantes&nbsp;?</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202202-2">À l’âge de vingt-et-un ans, Ibn Battuta, simple pèlerin en partance pour la Mecque, quitte en 1325 la ville de Tanger où il a passé toute son enfance et son adolescence sous la dynastie des Mérinides. Le Maroc est alors dirigé par cette puissante dynastie qui après quelques-unes des plus belles réalisations artistiques et culturelles de l’histoire du pays, est mise à mal par une série de querelles de succession, de mutineries et de révoltes populaires, notamment à Ceuta et Tanger.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202202-3">Le jeune homme a étudié le droit coranique et en quittant Tanger pour faire le <em>haji</em>, le pèlerinage que font les musulmans pour se rendre dans les lieux saints de la ville de La Mecque, en Arabie saoudite, il a à cœur de ponctuer son voyage de rencontres au sein de la communauté musulmane. Au XIV<sup>e</sup> siècle, l’Afrique du Nord est considérée par les penseurs musulmans comme une région où la religion est demeurée unifiée et pure, préservée des divisions qui apparaissent dans le monde musulman, notamment en Arabie et en Perse.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202202-4">C’est d’ailleurs son attrait pour l’unité de la pratique religieuse, sa maîtrise de la langue arabe, la place alors occupée par l’Islam et l’essor du commerce dans le monde musulman qui permettront à Ibn Battuta de parcourir une distance extraordinaire de 120&nbsp;000 kilomètres au sein de contrées dans lesquelles des valeurs et des croyances communes lui donneront le sentiment d’être toujours le bienvenu. Une position favorable à faire pâlir d’envie Marco Polo, son contemporain, qui explorait des contrées éloignées avec lesquelles il ne partageait rien, et dans lesquelles il était un étranger.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202202-5">Après vingt-quatre années de pérégrinations, Ibn Battuta revient au Maroc en 1349 pour quelques temps seulement, avant de partir pour Grenade où sa route finit par croiser celle d’Ibn Juzayy à Grenade. C’est à ce poète, historien et juriste de l'Al-Andalus qu’Ibn Battuta narre ses voyages dans le recueil&nbsp;<em>Tuḥfat an-Nuẓẓār fī Gharāʾib al-Amṣār wa ʿAjāʾib al-Asfār</em>&nbsp;(littéralement «&nbsp;Un cadeau pour ceux qui contemplent les splendeurs des villes et les merveilles des voyages&nbsp;»), communément désigné comme les <em>Voyages</em>.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202202-6">De retour au Maroc en 1350, il réalise combien son propre pays lui est étranger. En déambulant dans la médina, sur la place du Grand Socco, il est bercé par le son des langues vivantes qui se croisent et s’entrelacent. L’anglais fait écho à l’arabe et au français, à la chaleur et la générosité des sourires partagés. Tenues traditionnelles et tenues plus modernes se juxtaposent pour former un tableau photographique singulier.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202204-2">Un peu plus loin, des enfants courent, chahutent, jouent au foot près du café Baba, point de rendez-vous de la jeunesse bohème dans la médina. Le rose, le blanc, le bleu et le rouge apportent par touches de la vie et du mouvement aux photos prises comme autant d’instants volés.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202204-3">Non loin de là se trouve la tombe d’Ibn Battuta, un petit mausolée perdu dans les rues de la médina. C’est un lieu de recueillement, auquel l’équipe espère revenir après son reportage au long cours dans les trente-huit pays visités par l’explorateur marocain.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202204-4">Mais le Maroc du XIV<sup>e</sup> siècle ne se résumait pas à Tanger. L’équipe se rend donc à Chefchaouen, située dans les montagnes du Rif, au nord-ouest du Maroc. Célèbre pour les tons bleus vifs qui égayent la vieille ville, elle est devenue très touristique. Pour prendre le contrepied du rythme dicté par les nombreux touristes, Yan Bighetti de Flogny et Damien Steck, le réalisateur, décident de photographier Basma Azmate, Lamya Mellouk, Safae Houbbane, trois jeunes femmes vêtues de haïks traditionnels blancs. Leurs yeux nous sourient et nous invitent à les suivre dans le dédale de la medina.</p> </div></div></div><style data-emotion="css La ville ravit les cœurs de nos reporters qui choisissent de poser leurs trépieds dans la Madrasa Bou Inania, une médersa (université théologique musulmane) construite entre 1350 et 1355 pour le sultan Abou 'Inan Faris, membre de la dynastie des Mérinides. Des hommes sont en train de faire une ablution dans un bassin dans lequel se reflète l’architecture d’une élégance et d’une richesse rares. Sahara, près de la frontière algérienne, nous ouvre les bras. Ahmed se présente comme héritier d’une tradition nomade, mais leur maison en dur donne à leur quotidien des aspects de sédentarisation au milieu du désert. Avec son fils Omar, ils circulent autour de cette maison pour nourrir leurs chèvres dans un rayon s’étendant sur deux ou trois jours de marche. Ahmed nous emmène chez lui, nous présente sa mère et son épouse. «&nbsp;Lassé du voyage, je me suis posé définitivement&nbsp;» sourit-il. «&nbsp;Au décès de mon père, j’ai beaucoup pleuré. J’étais perdu. Mais j’ai pris conscience que j’avais tout et que je n’avais aucune raison de pleurer.&nbsp;Même si la vie au village est difficile, nous y sommes habitués. C’est un endroit merveilleux ». Il se réjouit de la pluie qui cette année a mis fin à une longue sécheresse, comme si l’eau s’était aussi infiltrée dans les cœurs pour les adoucir.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202210-2">Le voyage marocain se termine par des escales à Taroudant, Essaouira et Casablanca. Après avoir quitté l'Empire du Mali, il traverse le désert en 1353 pour rejoindre son Maroc natal, où il finit sa vie, enfin sédentaire et apaisé.</p> </div><div><p data-paragraph-id="3202212-2">Il meurt à Marrakech en 1377. Il dépeignait ainsi l’actuelle capitale du Maroc, alors abandonnée par les Mérinides au profit de Fez&nbsp;: <em>«&nbsp;C’est là l’une des plus belles cités que l’on connaisse ; elle est vaste, occupe un immense territoire et abonde en toutes sortes de biens.&nbsp; On y voit des mosquées magnifiques, telle que sa mosquée principale appelée la mosquée des Libraires (Al Kutubiyya).
