and was perplexed, because it was said by some that John was risen from the dead; <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>and by some that Elias had appeared; and by others, that one of the ancient prophets was risen again. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such <i>things?</i> and he wanted to see Him.<p> <A name="11"></a><p class="hdg">The Feeding of the Five Thousand<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/14.htm#13">Matthew 14:13&#8211;21</a>; <a href ="../mark/9.htm">Mark 9:1&#8211;13</a>; <a href ="../2_peter/1.htm#16">2 Peter 1:16&#8211;21</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>About eight days after these discourses, He took Peter, and John, and James, and went up to a mountain to pray. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And as He was praying the form of his countenance was altered, and his raiment white <i>and</i> glistering: <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>and behold two men talked with Him, which were Moses and Elias; <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>who appeared in glory, and spake of his exit, which He was to make at Jerusalem. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Now Peter and they that were with Him were heavy with sleep; but being awakened they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with Him. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And as they were departing from Him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here, let us make three tabernacles, one for Thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And as he was saying this, there came a cloud and overshadowed them; and they were afraid, when they went <i>up</i> into the cloud <i>and disappeared.</i> <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And there came a voice out of the cloud saying, This is my beloved Son, hear ye Him. <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And when the voice was <i>uttered,</i> Jesus was found alone. And they kept <i>it</i> to themselves, and told no one at that time any of the things which they had seen.<p> <A name="38"></a><p class="hdg">The Boy with an Evil Spirit<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/17.htm#14">Matthew 17:14&#8211;18</a>; <a href ="../mark/9.htm#14">Mark 9:14&#8211;29</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>And the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a great multitude met Him: <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>and one of the people cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee look upon my son, for he is my only child; <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>and lo, a spirit seizeth him, and <i>all</i> on a sudden he screameth, and it convulses him with foaming; and bruising him, with much ado departs from him. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>And I prayed thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>Then Jesus answered and said, <FR>O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? Bring thy son hither.<Fr> <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And as he was coming along, the devil bruised and convulsed him: but Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him to his father.<p> <A name="44"></a><p class="hdg">The Second Prediction of the Passion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/17.htm#22">Matthew 17:22&#8211;23</a>; <a href ="../mark/9.htm#30">Mark 9:30&#8211;32</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God: but while they were all wondering at <i>the things</i> which Jesus did, He said to his disciples, <A name="45"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span><FR>Receive these words into your ears; for the Son of man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.<Fr> <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, <i>so</i> that they perceived it not, and they were afraid to ask Him concerning it.<p> <A name="47"></a><p class="hdg">The Greatest in the Kingdom<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/18.htm">Matthew 18:1&#8211;5</a>; <a href ="../mark/9.htm#33">Mark 9:33&#8211;41</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>Then a dispute rose among them, which of them should be greatest. <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>And Jesus knowing the thought of their heart, took a child and set him by Him, and said unto them, <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/9-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span><FR>Whosoever shall receive this little child for my sake, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth Him that sent me.
