class="existingWikiWord" href="/nlab/show/set+theory">set theory</a> with a primitive global membership relation “<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline" class="maruku-mathml"><semantics><mrow><mo>∈</mo></mrow><annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\in</annotation></semantics></math>” where sets are characterized only by “<math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline" class="maruku-mathml"><semantics><mrow><mo>∈</mo></mrow><annotation encoding="application/x-tex">\in</annotation></semantics></math>” and <a class="existingWikiWord" href="/nlab/show/propositional+equality">propositional equality</a> of sets. (The terminology ‘material’, or at least ‘materialistic’, goes back at least to <a href="#Friedman1997">Friedman 1997</a>.) Material set theory contrasts with <em><a class="existingWikiWord" href="/nlab/show/structural+set+theory">structural set theory</a></em> (cf. <em><a class="existingWikiWord" href="/nlab/show/material+versus+structural+set+theory">material versus structural set theory</a></em>), as well as with set theories which are neither structural nor material.
