The day-to-day use of the Alexa site and toolbars/extensions by all Alexa users helped build and refine the data. By looking at high-level trends within the millions of URL "paths" created by Alexa users, we were able to deduce the relationships between sites.</p> <p>For example, if many users go directly from site A to site B, we surmised that the two sites were likely to be related. Next, all the URLs are checked to make sure they go to live pages. That process removed links to error pages (404, 503), as well as any links to servers that aren't available to the general internet population, such as servers that are no longer online or are behind firewalls.</p> <p>Finally, once all of the relationships were established and the links checked, the top Related Links for each URL were automatically chosen by looking at the strength of the relationship between the sites. The "strength" is based on a combination of the various ways that sites can be related (analyzing web links, user behavior, etc.).      </p> <p>Note that since the relationships between sites were based on strength, Related Links lists were not necessarily balanced. Site A may appear in the list for site B, but site B may not be in the list for Site A. Generally, this happens when the number of sites with strong relationships was stronger than ten, or when sites did not have similar enough content.</p> <p>If you would like the Related Links list for your site updated, please <a href="/web/20160305102856/https://support.alexa.com/hc/en-us/requests/new" target="_blank">submit a help request</a>.</p> </div> <div class="article-attachments"> <ul class="attachments"> </ul> </div> <!-- <footer class="article-footer clearfix"> <div class="article-vote"> <span class="article-vote-question">Was this article helpful?</span> <div class="article-vote-controls"> <a role="button" rel="nofollow" class="article-vote-up" title="Yes" aria-selected="false" href="/hc/en-us/signin?return_to=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.alexa.com%2Fhc%2Fen-us%2Farticles%2F200439344-How-are-Related-Links-determined-"></a> <a role="button" rel="nofollow" class="article-vote-down" title="No" aria-selected="false" href="/hc/en-us/signin?return_to=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.alexa.com%2Fhc%2Fen-us%2Farticles%2F200439344-How-are-Related-Links-determined-"></a> </div> <small class="article-vote-count"> <span class="article-vote-label">0 out of 0 found this helpful</span> </small> </div> </footer> --> <!-- <div class="article-more-questions"> Have more questions? <a href="/hc/en-us/requests/new">Submit a request</a> </div> --> <!-- <section class="article-comments"> <h2>Comments</h2> </section> --> </article> <!-- <aside class="article-sidebar side-column"> <div data-recent-articles></div> </aside> --> </div> </main> <footer class="footer"> <div class="footer-inner"> <!-- Footer content --> </div> </footer> <!-- / --> <script type="text/javascript" src="//web.archive.org/web/20160305102856js_/https://p6.zdassets.com/hc/en-us/locales-cac427ca8e303c69b4facce06a2a2288bd01460e.js"></script> <script src="https://web.archive.org/web/20160305102856js_/https://alexa.zendesk.com/auth/v2/host.js" data-brand-id="411634" data-return-to="https://support.alexa.com/hc/en-us/articles/200439344-How-are-Related-Links-determined-" data-theme="hc" data-locale="1" data-auth-origin="411634,true,true"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> /* Greetings sourcecode lurker!
