(JPRS; Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Koki Higashida), the company responsible for the management and administration of the .JP top-level domain and operation of the domain name system, announced today that the cumulative total number of JP domain names registered as of January 1, 2003 broke the 500,000 mark, reaching 502,906. Of the 243 ccTLDs in the world, JP ranks among the top 10 in terms of the number of registrations. (according to the survey by JPRS). </p> <p>The details of JP domain name registrations is as follows: Organizational/Geographic Type JP domain names including "co.jp" and "ne.jp": 297,413; General-use JP domain names including "example.jp" and "[Japanese domain name].jp": 205,493 (ASCII: 153,949; Japanese characters: 51,544). In the category of Organizational/Geographic Type JP domain names, "co.jp", domain name for companies, has risen steadily with the registration of 239,807. The number of General-use JP domain names reached 200,000 in less than two years after the start of registration in February 2001. </p> <p>Koki Higashida, President of JPRS, commented on surpassing the 500,000 mark:<br /> "Two years since JPRS was founded, the cumulative total of registered JP domain names has now topped 500,000. This achievement would not have been possible without the support of the Internet community in Japan, and we are grateful to all its members. These past two years have seen a number of milestones for the .JP top-level domain, such as the launch of General-use JP domain name registration, execution of the ccTLD Sponsorship Agreement (.jp) with ICANN, transfer of the management and administration of the .JP top-level domain from JPNIC to JPRS, and introduction of the new "LG.JP" second-level domain.
