however, the construction and the people who made it possible are often omitted and seldom acknowledged. The reality is that the construction of this waterway was achieved through forced migration and discriminatory practices toward people of African descent, specifically black people from the Caribbean. From the colonial period to the opening and subsequent operation of the Panama Canal by the United States, this paper goes through the rich layers of Panamanian history to examine the life of Afro-Caribbeans and their descendants in Panama. It also considers the role of the United States in Panama; it explores how the United States in Panama forged a racially complex country that made the integration of Afro-Caribbeans and their descendants difficult. After laying a historical foundation, the exploration of Afro-Caribbean people and Panamanians of Afro-Caribbean descent are analyzed through Afro-Panamanian writer Carlos Guillermo ‘Cubena’ Wilson's novels, short stories, and poetry. This study focuses on how Cubena addresses racism, discrimination, inequality, and social justice issues towards Afro-Caribbeans and their descendants who traveled to Panama to construct the Canal. Content analysis methodology can yield several significant contributions, and analyzing Carlos Guillermo Wilson's literature under this framework allows us to consider social commentary and critique of Panamanian society. It identifies the social issues and concerns of Afro-Caribbeans and people of Afro-Caribbean descent, such as inequality, corruption, racism, political oppression, and cultural identity. Analysis methodology allows us to explore how Cubena's literature engages with questions of cultural identity and belonging in Panamanian society. By examining themes related to race, ethnicity, language, and heritage, this research uncovers the complexities of Panamanian cultural identity, allowing us to interrogate power dynamics and social hierarchies in Panamanian society. Analyzing the portrayal of different social groups, institutions, and power structures helps uncover how power is wielded, contested, and resisted; Cubena's fictional world allows us to see how it functions in Panama. Content analysis methodology also provides for critiquing political systems and governance in Panama. By examining the representation and presentation of political figures, institutions, and events in Cubena's literature, we uncover his commentary on corruption, authoritarianism, governance, and the role of the United States in Panama. Content analysis highlights how Wilson's literature amplifies the voices and experiences of marginalized individuals and communities in Panamanian society. By centering the narratives of Afro-Panamanians and other marginalized groups, this researcher uncovers Cubena's commitment to social justice and inclusion in his writing and helps the reader engage with historical narratives and collective memory in Panama. Overall, analyzing Carlos Guillermo ‘Cubena’ Wilson's literature as a platform for social commentary and critique of Panamanian society using content analysis methodology provides valuable insights into the cultural, social, and political dimensions of Afro-Panamanians during and after the construction of the Panama Canal. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Afro-Caribbean" title="Afro-Caribbean">Afro-Caribbean</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Panama%20Canal" title=" Panama Canal"> Panama Canal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=race" title=" race"> race</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Afro-Panamanian" title=" Afro-Panamanian"> Afro-Panamanian</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=identity" title=" identity"> identity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=history" title=" history"> history</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185180/carlos-guillermo-cubena-wilsons-literary-texts-as-platforms-for-social-commentary-and-critique-of-panamanian-society" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/185180.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">44</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">23</span> Analysis of the Relationship between the Unitary Impulse Response for the nth-Volterra Kernel of a Duffing Oscillator System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Manuel%20Flores%20Figueroa">Guillermo Manuel Flores Figueroa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Juan%20Alejandro%20Vazquez%20Feijoo"> Juan Alejandro Vazquez Feijoo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jose%20Navarro%20Antonio"> Jose Navarro Antonio</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A continuous nonlinear system response may be obtained by an infinite sum of the so-called Volterra operators. Each operator is obtained from multidimensional convolution of nth-order between the nth-order Volterra kernel and the system input. These operators can also be obtained from the Associated Linear Equations (ALEs) that are linear models of subsystems which inputs and outputs are of the same nth-order. Each ALEs produces a particular nth-Volterra operator. As linear models a unitary impulse response can be obtained from them. This work shows the relationship between this unitary impulse responses and the corresponding order Volterra kernel. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Volterra%20series" title="Volterra series">Volterra series</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=frequency%20response%20functions%20FRF" title=" frequency response functions FRF"> frequency response functions FRF</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=associated%20linear%20equations%20ALEs" title=" associated linear equations ALEs"> associated linear equations ALEs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unitary%20response%20function" title=" unitary response function"> unitary response function</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Voterra%20kernel" title=" Voterra kernel"> Voterra kernel</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/29423/analysis-of-the-relationship-between-the-unitary-impulse-response-for-the-nth-volterra-kernel-of-a-duffing-oscillator-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/29423.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">669</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">22</span> A Platform to Analyze Controllers for Solar Hot Water Systems</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aziz%20Ahmad">Aziz Ahmad</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Ramirez-Prado"> Guillermo Ramirez-Prado</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Governments around the world encourage the use of solar water heating in residential houses due to the low maintenance requirements and efficiency of the solar collector water heating systems. This is relevant considering the significance of cinema within the local political culture and its impact on countries of the region. Discussions about the medium have been carried out mainly in the field of film criticism. The objective of this article is to reflect on the divergences between film studies and film criticism taking into account formal and theoretical features and to explore the transcendence of this debate for the intellectual ambiance of the Island. Methodologically, the study relies on theoretical elaborations based on literature review and non-structure interviews with Cuban film critics and scholars. The study finds that the gradation proposed by the Anglo-Saxon tradition, where film studies are considered a “higher stage," compared to criticism and cinephilia, does not apply to the Cuban space. Instead, to assess the state of reflection on cinema in Cuba, it is essential to consider it a starry node traversed by epistemic, institutional, and geopolitical matrices. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=film%20studies" title="film studies">film studies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=film%20criticism" title=" film criticism"> film criticism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cuban%20cinema" title=" Cuban cinema"> Cuban cinema</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cuban%20film%20studies" title=" Cuban film studies"> Cuban film studies</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152140/film-studies-definition-current-status-and-future-perspectives-for-cuba" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152140.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">99</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">20</span> Flashover Detection Algorithm Based on Mother Function</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=John%20A.%20Morales">John A. Power outages statistics show that discharges atmospherics are imperative phenomena to produce those outages. In this context, it is necessary to correctly detect when overhead line insulators are faulted. In this paper, an algorithm to detect if a lightning stroke generates or not permanent fault on insulator strings is proposed. On top of that, lightning stroke simulations developed by using the Alternative Transients Program, are used. Based on these insights, a novel approach is designed that depends on mother functions analysis corresponding to the given variance-covariance matrix. Signals registered at the insulator string are projected on corresponding axes by the means of Principal Component Analysis. By exploiting these new axes, it is possible to determine a flashover characteristic zone useful to a good insulation design. The proposed methodology for flashover detection extends the existing approaches for the analysis and study of lightning performance on transmission lines. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mother%20function" title="mother function">mother function</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=outages" title=" outages"> outages</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lightning" title=" lightning"> lightning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sensitivity%20analysis" title=" sensitivity analysis"> sensitivity analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26070/flashover-detection-algorithm-based-on-mother-function" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/26070.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">586</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">19</span> Fail Analysis of the Filter in a Land Dam</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Cardoso-Landa">Guillermo Cardoso-Landa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ana%20Julita%20Cuenca-Castro"> Ana Julita Cuenca-Castro</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The present paper focuses to research the possible causes of curtain failure of dam "El Batan" in Querétaro, Mexico, including the design of the fineness of the employee filter during the construction of the curtain was verified since this depends greatly on the proper functioning of this filter. It is concluded that the type of the filter employed in the land dam curtain of "El Batan", located in the municipality of Querétaro, México, do not have adequate characteristics, outside of the ranges of design, using the curves: Terzaghi criteria, Sherard and Dunnigan criteria, UCSCS criteria, and Foster and Fell criteria. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=failure" title="failure">failure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dam" title=" dam"> dam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=filter" title=" filter"> filter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=curtain" title=" curtain"> curtain</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21862/fail-analysis-of-the-filter-in-a-land-dam" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21862.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">499</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">18</span> Social Representations: Unplanned and Unwanted Pregnancy in Adolescents from Leon-Mexico </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alejandra%20Sierra">Alejandra Sierra</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20de%20los%20Angeles%20Covarrubias"> Maria de los Angeles Covarrubias</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Julian%20Gonzalez"> Guillermo Julian Gonzalez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Noe%20Alfaro"> Noe Alfaro</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The objective of this study was to identify the cultural dimensions of the terms unplanned pregnancy and unwanted pregnancy built by adolescent women, through the focus of the social representations. Two associative methods were used: free listings and the paired comparison. 72 female students between the ages of 15 and 19 were interviewed, from the downtown area of Leon Guanajuato, Mexico. Words related to inducer terms were classified into five thematic categories: facilitators, consequences, reactions, expectations, and lexicon. The results showed that the social representations of unplanned pregnancy highlighted elements related to economic difficulties and negative emotional aspects, while unwanted pregnancy was associated with negative emotional aspects such as anger, anxiety, and sadness. The meanings each person attributes to terms related to pregnancy are culturally constructed and differ between populations; therefore, more attention should be paid to understanding the cultural meanings and attitudes of people in fertility decision-making, including also the views of adolescent men and other types of population, stratified by age groups and social conditions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adolescent" title="adolescent">adolescent</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=qualitative%20research" title=" qualitative research"> qualitative research</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unplanned%20pregnancy" title=" unplanned pregnancy"> unplanned pregnancy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unwanted%20pregnancy" title=" unwanted pregnancy"> unwanted pregnancy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/82829/social-representations-unplanned-and-unwanted-pregnancy-in-adolescents-from-leon-mexico" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/82829.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">213</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">17</span> Prevalence and Characteristics of Consumption of Nutraceuticals: The Case Study of Undergraduate Students of Medellin- Colombia, 2013</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gloria%20In%C3%A9s%20Mart%C3%ADnez%20Dom%C3%ADnguez">Gloria Inés Martínez Domínguez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lina%20Mar%C3%ADa%20Mart%C3%ADnez%20S%C3%A1nchez"> Lina María Martínez Sánchez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mar%C3%ADa%20de%20los%20%C3%81ngeles%20Rodr%C3%ADguez%20G%C3%A1zquez"> María de los Ángeles Rodríguez Gázquez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Juan%20Guillermo%20Jim%C3%A9nez%20Jim%C3%A9nez"> Juan Guillermo Jiménez Jiménez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johan%20Sebasti%C3%A1n%20Lopera%20Valle"> Johan Sebastián Lopera Valle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Natalia%20Vargas%20Grisales"> Natalia Vargas Grisales</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sara%20Rojas%20Jim%C3%A9nez"> Sara Rojas Jiménez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alejandra%20Uribe%20Ocampo"> Alejandra Uribe Ocampo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sara%20Correa%20P%C3%A9rez"> Sara Correa Pérez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Natalia%20Perilla%20Hern%C3%A1ndez"> Natalia Perilla Hernández</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Juan%20Sebasti%C3%A1n%20Mar%C3%ADn%20C%C3%A1rdenas"> Juan Sebastián Marín Cárdenas</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The relationship between diet and chronic or degenerative diseases has led to the development of functional foods such as nutraceuticals. Occasionally, they can manifest in a solidary organ such as the heart, lung, and nervous systems; rarely do they manifest in the gallbladder. Diagnosis often requires biopsy of the affected area and histopathology shows deposition of abnormally folded globular proteins called amyloid proteins. This case presents a 69-year-old male with a 3-month history of RUQ pain, diarrhea and non-specific symptoms of tiredness, etc. On imaging, both his US and CT abdomen showed gallbladder wall thickening and pericholecystic fluid, which may represent acute cholecystitis with hypodense lesions around the gallbladder, possibly representing liver abscesses. Given his symptoms of abdominal pain and imaging findings, this gentleman eventually had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy showing a gangrenous gallbladder with a mass on the liver bed. On histopathology, it showed amorphous hyaline eosinophilic material, which Congo-stained confirmed amyloidosis. Amyloidosis explained his non-specific symptoms, he avoided further biopsy, and he was commenced immediately on Lenalidomide. Involvement of the gallbladder is extremely rare, with less than 30 cases around the world. Half of the cases are reported as primary amyloidosis. This case adds to the current literature regarding primary gallbladder amyloidosis. Importantly, this case highlights how laparoscopic cholecystectomy can help with the diagnosis of gallbladder amyloidosis. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=amyloidosis" title="amyloidosis">amyloidosis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cholecystitis" title=" cholecystitis"> cholecystitis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gangrenous%20cholecystitis" title=" gangrenous cholecystitis"> gangrenous cholecystitis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gallbladder" title=" gallbladder"> gallbladder</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=systemic%20amyloidosis" title=" systemic amyloidosis"> systemic amyloidosis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140554/gallbladder-amyloidosis-causing-gangrenous-cholecystitis-a-case-report" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140554.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">207</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">14</span> Microstructural and Optical Characterization of High-quality ZnO Nano-rods Deposited by Simple Electrodeposition Process</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Somnath%20Mahato">Somnath Mahato</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Minarul%20Islam%20Sarkar"> Minarul Islam Sarkar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Luis%20Guillermo%20Gerling"> Luis Guillermo Gerling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joaquim%20Puigdollers"> Joaquim Puigdollers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asit%20Kumar%20Kar"> Asit Kumar Kar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nanostructured Zinc Oxide (ZnO) thin films have been successfully deposited on indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass substrates by a simple two electrode electrodeposition process at constant potential. The preparative parameters such as deposition time, deposition potential, concentration of solution, bath temperature and pH value of electrolyte have been optimized for deposition of uniform ZnO thin films. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the prepared ZnO thin films have a high preferential oriented c-axis orientation with compact hexagonal (wurtzite) structure. Surface morphological studies show that the ZnO films are smooth, continuous, uniform without cracks or holes and compact with nanorod-like structure on the top of the surface. Optical properties reveal that films exhibit higher absorbance in the violet region of the optical spectrum; it gradually decreased in the visible range with increases in wavelength and became least at the beginning of NIR region. The photoluminescence spectra shows that the observed peaks are attributed to the various structural defects in the nanostructured ZnO crystal. The microstructural and optical properties suggest that the electrodeposited ZnO thin films are suitable for application in photosensitive devices such as photovoltaic solar cells photoelectrochemical cells and light emitting diodes etc. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electrodeposition" title="electrodeposition">electrodeposition</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=microstructure" title=" microstructure"> microstructure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optical%20properties" title=" optical properties"> optical properties</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ZnO%20thin%20films" title=" ZnO thin films"> ZnO thin films</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24761/microstructural-and-optical-characterization-of-high-quality-zno-nano-rods-deposited-by-simple-electrodeposition-process" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24761.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">321</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13</span> Impact of Edible Coatings Made of Chitosan and Spray Dried Propolis in the Shell Life of White Cachama (Piaractus brachypomus)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20Guillermo%20Piedrahita%20Marquez">David Guillermo Piedrahita Marquez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hector%20Suarez%20Mahecha"> Hector Suarez Mahecha</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jairo%20%20Humberto%20Lopez"> Jairo Humberto Lopez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> There is a need to preserve aquaculture matrices due to their high nutritional value, and its broad consumption, one of those species is the white cachama (Piaractus brachypomus), this fish is located in the rivers of eastern Colombia, and the previously mentioned species needs more study. Therefore, in a paper the effects of an alternative method of preservation of shell life were investigated, the method used is the application of an edible coating made from chitosan and ethanolic extract of propolis (EEP) encapsulated in maltodextrin. The coating was applied by immersion, and after that, we investigated the post mortem quality changes of the fish performing physicochemical and microbiological analysis. pH, volatile bases, test thiobarbituric acid and peroxide value were tested; finally, we studied the effect of the coating on mesophilic strains, coliforms and other microorganisms such as Staphylococcus, and Salmonella. Finally, we concluded that the coating prolongs the shelf life because it acts as a barrier to oxygen and moisture, the bioactive compounds trap free radicals and the coatings changes the metabolism and cause the cell lysis of the microorganisms. It was determined that the concentration of malonaldehyde, the volatile basic nitrogen content and pH are the variables that distinguish more clearly between the samples with the treatment and the control samples. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=antimicrobial%20activity" title="antimicrobial activity">antimicrobial activity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lipid%20oxidation" title=" lipid oxidation"> lipid oxidation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=texture%20profile%20analysis%20%28TPA%29" title=" texture profile analysis (TPA)"> texture profile analysis (TPA)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sensorial%20analysis" title=" sensorial analysis"> sensorial analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=peroxide%20value" title=" peroxide value"> peroxide value</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thiobarbituric%20acid%20assay%20%28TBA%29" title=" thiobarbituric acid assay (TBA)"> thiobarbituric acid assay (TBA)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=total%20volatile%20basic%20nitrogen%20%28TVB-N%29" title=" total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N)"> total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62819/impact-of-edible-coatings-made-of-chitosan-and-spray-dried-propolis-in-the-shell-life-of-white-cachama-piaractus-brachypomus" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62819.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">289</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12</span> Network Conditioning and Transfer Learning for Peripheral Nerve Segmentation in Ultrasound Images</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Harold%20Mauricio%20D%C3%ADaz-Vargas">Harold Mauricio Díaz-Vargas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cristian%20Alfonso%20Jimenez-Casta%C3%B1o"> Cristian Alfonso Jimenez-Castaño</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20Augusto%20C%C3%A1rdenas-Pe%C3%B1a"> David Augusto Cárdenas-Peña</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Alberto%20Ortiz-G%C3%B3mez"> Guillermo Alberto Ortiz-Gómez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alvaro%20Angel%20Orozco-Gutierrez"> Alvaro Angel Orozco-Gutierrez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Precise identification of the nerves is a crucial task performed by anesthesiologists for an effective Peripheral Nerve Blocking (PNB). Now, anesthesiologists use ultrasound imaging equipment to guide the PNB and detect nervous structures. However, visual identification of the nerves from ultrasound images is difficult, even for trained specialists, due to artifacts and low contrast. The recent advances in deep learning make neural networks a potential tool for accurate nerve segmentation systems, so addressing the above issues from raw data. The most widely spread U-Net network yields pixel-by-pixel segmentation by encoding the input image and decoding the attained feature vector into a semantic image. This work proposes a conditioning approach and encoder pre-training to enhance the nerve segmentation of traditional U-Nets. Conditioning is achieved by the one-hot encoding of the kind of target nerve a the network input, while the pre-training considers five well-known deep networks for image classification. The proposed approach is tested in a collection of 619 US images, where the best C-UNet architecture yields an 81% Dice coefficient, outperforming the 74% of the best traditional U-Net. Results prove that pre-trained models with the conditional approach outperform their equivalent baseline by supporting learning new features and enriching the discriminant capability of the tested networks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nerve%20segmentation" title="nerve segmentation">nerve segmentation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=U-Net" title=" U-Net"> U-Net</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deep%20learning" title=" deep learning"> deep learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultrasound%20imaging" title=" ultrasound imaging"> ultrasound imaging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=peripheral%20nerve%20blocking" title=" peripheral nerve blocking"> peripheral nerve blocking</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152338/network-conditioning-and-transfer-learning-for-peripheral-nerve-segmentation-in-ultrasound-images" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/152338.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">106</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11</span> Assessment of a Coupled Geothermal-Solar Thermal Based Hydrogen Production System</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maryam%20Hamlehdar">Maryam Hamlehdar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20A.%20Narsilio"> Guillermo A. This detailed modelling study conducts a thermo-economic assessment of an advanced Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC)-based hydrogen production system that uses low-temperature geothermal reservoirs, with a specific focus on hot sedimentary aquifers (HSAs) over a 30-year period. In the proposed hybrid system, solar-thermal energy is used to raise the water temperature extracted from the geothermal production well. This temperature increase leads to a higher steam output, powering the turbine and subsequently enhancing the electricity output for running the electrolyser. Thermodynamic modeling of a parabolic trough solar (PTS) collector is developed and integrated with modeling for a geothermal-based configuration. This configuration includes a closed regenerator cycle (CRC), proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser, and thermoelectric generator (TEG). Following this, the study investigates the impact of solar energy use on the temperature enhancement of the geothermal reservoir. It assesses the resulting consequences on the lifecycle performance of the hydrogen production system in comparison with a standalone geothermal system. The results indicate that, with the appropriate solar collector area, a combined solar-geothermal hydrogen production system outperforms a standalone geothermal system in both cost and rate of production. These findings underscore a solar-assisted geothermal hybrid system holds the potential to generate lower-cost hydrogen with enhanced efficiency, thereby boosting the appeal of numerous low to medium-temperature geothermal sources for hydrogen production. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=clean%20hydrogen%20production" title="clean hydrogen production">clean hydrogen production</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=integrated%20solar-geothermal" title=" integrated solar-geothermal"> integrated solar-geothermal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low-temperature%20geothermal%20energy" title=" low-temperature geothermal energy"> low-temperature geothermal energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=numerical%20modelling" title=" numerical modelling"> numerical modelling</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182662/assessment-of-a-coupled-geothermal-solar-thermal-based-hydrogen-production-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182662.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">68</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">10</span> Computational Feasibility Study of a Torsional Wave Transducer for Tissue Stiffness Monitoring</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Mu%C3%B1oz">Rafael Muñoz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Juan%20Melchor"> Juan Melchor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alicia%20Valera"> Alicia Valera</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Peralta"> Laura Peralta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Rus"> Guillermo Rus</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A torsional piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer design is proposed to measure shear moduli in soft tissue with direct access availability, using shear wave elastography technique. The measurement of shear moduli of tissues is a challenging problem, mainly derived from a) the difficulty of isolating a pure shear wave, given the interference of multiple waves of different types (P, S, even guided) emitted by the transducers and reflected in geometric boundaries, and b) the highly attenuating nature of soft tissular materials. An immediate application, overcoming these drawbacks, is the measurement of changes in cervix stiffness to estimate the gestational age at delivery. The design has been optimized using a finite element model (FEM) and a semi-analytical estimator of the probability of detection (POD) to determine a suitable geometry, materials and generated waves. The technique is based on the time of flight measurement between emitter and receiver, to infer shear wave velocity. Current research is centered in prototype testing and validation. The geometric optimization of the transducer was able to annihilate the compressional wave emission, generating a quite pure shear torsional wave. Currently, mechanical and electromagnetic coupling between emitter and receiver signals are being the research focus. Conclusions: the design overcomes the main described problems. The almost pure shear torsional wave along with the short time of flight avoids the possibility of multiple wave interference. This short propagation distance reduce the effect of attenuation, and allow the emission of very low energies assuring a good biological security for human use. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cervix%20ripening" title="cervix ripening">cervix ripening</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=preterm%20birth" title=" preterm birth"> preterm birth</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shear%20modulus" title=" shear modulus"> shear modulus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shear%20wave%20elastography" title=" shear wave elastography"> shear wave elastography</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soft%20tissue" title=" soft tissue"> soft tissue</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=torsional%20wave" title=" torsional wave"> torsional wave</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41021/computational-feasibility-study-of-a-torsional-wave-transducer-for-tissue-stiffness-monitoring" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41021.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">345</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">9</span> Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Galvanized Steel by Sintering Zinc Nanopowder</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francisco%20Javier%20Montes%20Ruiz-Cabello">Francisco Javier Montes Ruiz-Cabello</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Guerrero-Vacas"> Guillermo Guerrero-Vacas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sara%20Bermudez-Romero"> Sara Bermudez-Romero</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Miguel%20Cabrerizo%20Vilchez"> Miguel Cabrerizo Vilchez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Miguel%20Angel%20Rodriguez-Valverde"> Miguel Angel Rodriguez-Valverde</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Galvanized steel is one of the widespread metallic materials used in industry. It consists on a iron-based alloy (steel) coated with a layer of zinc with variable thickness. The zinc is aimed to prevent the inner steel from corrosion and staining. Its production is cheaper than the stainless steel and this is the reason why it is employed in the construction of materials with large dimensions in aeronautics, urban/ industrial edification or ski-resorts. In all these applications, turning the natural hydrophilicity of the metal surface into superhydrophobicity is particularly interesting and would open a wide variety of additional functionalities. However, producing a superhydrophobic surface on galvanized steel may be a very difficult task. Superhydrophobic surfaces are characterized by a specific surface texture which is reached either by coating the surface with a material that incorporates such texture, or by conducting several roughening methods. Since galvanized steel is already a coated material, the incorporation of a second coating may be undesired. On the other hand, the methods that are recurrently used to incorporate the surface texture leading to superhydrophobicity in metals are aggressive and may damage their surface. In this work, we used a novel strategy which goal is to produce superhydrophobic galvanized steel by a two-step non-aggressive process. The first process is aimed to create a hierarchical structure by incorporating zinc nanoparticles sintered on the surface at a temperature slightly lower than the zinc’s melting point. The second one is a hydrophobization by a thick fluoropolymer layer deposition. The wettability of the samples is characterized in terms of tilting plate and bouncing drop experiments, while the roughness is analyzed by confocal microscopy. The durability of the produced surfaces was also explored. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=galvanaized%20steel" title="galvanaized steel">galvanaized steel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=superhydrophobic%20surfaces" title=" superhydrophobic surfaces"> superhydrophobic surfaces</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sintering%20nanoparticles" title=" sintering nanoparticles"> sintering nanoparticles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=zinc%20nanopowder" title=" zinc nanopowder"> zinc nanopowder</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124318/fabrication-of-superhydrophobic-galvanized-steel-by-sintering-zinc-nanopowder" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124318.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">150</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">8</span> Effects of Different Thermal Processing Routes and Their Parameters on the Formation of Voids in PA6 Bonded Aluminum Joints</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Muhammad%20Irfan">Muhammad Irfan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Requena"> Guillermo Requena</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jan%20Haubrich"> Jan Haubrich</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Adhesively bonded aluminum joints are common in automotive and aircraft industries and are one of the enablers of lightweight construction to minimize the carbon emissions during transportation for a sustainable life. This study is focused on the effects of two thermal processing routes, i.e., by direct and induction heating, and their parameters on void formation in PA6 bonded aluminum EN-AW6082 joints. The joints were characterized microanalytically as well as by lap shear experiments. The aging resistance of the joints was studied by accelerated aging tests at 80°C hot water. It was found that the processing of single lap joints by direct heating in a convection oven causes the formation of a large number of voids in the bond line. The formation of voids in the convection oven was due to longer processing times and was independent of any surface pretreatments of the metal as well as the processing temperature. However, when processing at low temperatures, a large number of small-sized voids were observed under the optical microscope, and they were larger in size but reduced in numbers at higher temperatures. An induction heating process was developed, which not only successfully reduced or eliminated the voids in PA6 bonded joints but also reduced the processing times for joining significantly. Consistent with the trend in direct heating, longer processing times and higher temperatures in induction heating also led to an increased formation of voids in the bond line. Subsequent single lap shear tests revealed that the increasing void contents led to a 21% reduction in lap shear strengths (i.e., from ~47 MPa for induction heating to ~37 MPa for direct heating). Also, there was a 17% reduction in lap shear strengths when the consolidation temperature was raised from 220˚C to 300˚C during induction heating. However, below a certain threshold of void contents, there was no observable effect on the lap shear strengths as well as on hydrothermal aging resistance of the joints consolidated by the induction heating process. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adhesive" title="adhesive">adhesive</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aluminium" title=" aluminium"> aluminium</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=convection%20oven" title=" convection oven"> convection oven</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=induction%20heating" title=" induction heating"> induction heating</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mechanical%20properties" title=" mechanical properties"> mechanical properties</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nylon6%20%28PA6%29" title=" nylon6 (PA6)"> nylon6 (PA6)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pretreatment" title=" pretreatment"> pretreatment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=void" title=" void"> void</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113926/effects-of-different-thermal-processing-routes-and-their-parameters-on-the-formation-of-voids-in-pa6-bonded-aluminum-joints" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113926.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">122</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> Utilization of Nipa Palm Fibers (Nypa fruticans) and Asian Green Mussels Shells (Perna viridis) as an Additive Material in Making a Fiber-Reinforced Concrete</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Billy%20Angel%20B.%20Bayot">Billy Angel B. The researchers collected Asian green mussel shells and Nipa palm fibers as additive materials in the production of fiber-reinforced concrete and were used to make 3 Setups containing 20g, 15g, and 10g of Nipa palm fiber varying to 10g, 20g, 30g of Asian green mussel shell powder and a traditional concrete with respect to curing period 7, 14, and 28 days. The concrete blocks were delivered to the UP Institute of Building Materials and Structures Laboratory (CoMSLab) following each curing test in order to evaluate their compressive strength. Researchers employed a Two-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and determined that curing days, concrete mixture, and the combined curing days with concrete have an effect on the compressive strength of concrete. ANOVA results indicating significant differences had been subjected to post hoc analysis using Tukey's HSD. These results then yielded the comparison of each curing time and different concrete mixtures with traditional concrete, which comes to the conclusion that a longer curing period leads to a higher compressive strength and Setup 3 (30g Asian green mussel shell with 10g Nipa palm fiber) has the larger mean compressive strength, making it the best proportion among the fiber-reinforced concrete mixtures and the only proportion that has significant effect to traditional one. As a result, the study concludes that certain curing times and concrete mix proportions of Asian green mussel shell and Nipa palm fiber are critical determinants in determining concrete compressive strength. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asian%20green%20mussel%20shells%20%28Perna%20viridis%29" title="Asian green mussel shells (Perna viridis)">Asian green mussel shells (Perna viridis)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nipa%20palm%20fibers%20%28Nypa%20fruticans%29" title=" Nipa palm fibers (Nypa fruticans)"> Nipa palm fibers (Nypa fruticans)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=additives" title=" additives"> additives</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fiber-reinforced%20concrete" title=" fiber-reinforced concrete"> fiber-reinforced concrete</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183149/utilization-of-nipa-palm-fibers-nypa-fruticans-and-asian-green-mussels-shells-perna-viridis-as-an-additive-material-in-making-a-fiber-reinforced-concrete" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183149.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">63</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Spray Drying and Physico-Chemical Microbiological Evaluation of Ethanolic Extracts of Propolis</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20Guillermo%20Piedrahita%20Marquez">David Guillermo Piedrahita Marquez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hector%20Suarez%20Mahecha"> Hector Suarez Mahecha</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jairo%20Humberto%20Lopez"> Jairo Humberto Lopez</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The propolis are substances obtained from the beehive have an action against pathogens, prooxidant substances and free radicals because of its polyphenols content, this has motivated the use of these compounds in the food and pharmaceutical industries. However, due to their organoleptic properties and their ability to react with other compounds, their application has been limited; therefore, the objective of this research was to propose a mechanism to protect propolis and mitigate side effects granted by its components. To achieve the stated purpose ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) from three samples from Santander were obtained and their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity were evaluated in order to choose the extract with the biggest potential. Subsequently mixtures of the extract with maltodextrin were prepared by spray drying varying concentration and temperature, finally the yield, the physicochemical, and antioxidant properties of the products were measured. It was concluded that Socorro propolis was the best for the production of microencapsulated due to their activity against pathogenic strains, for its large percentage of DPPH radical inactivation and for its high phenolic content. In spray drying, the concentration of bioactive had a greater impact than temperature and the conditions set allowed a good performance and the production of particles with high antioxidant potential and little chance of proliferation of microorganisms. Also, it was concluded that the best conditions that allowed us to obtain the best particles were obtained after drying a mixture 1:2 ( EEP: Maltodextrin), besides the concentration is the most important variable in the spray drying process, at the end we obtained particles of different sizes and shape and the uniformity of the surface depend on the temperature. After watching the previously mentioned microparticles by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) it was concluded that most of the particles produced during the spray dry process had a spherical shape and presented agglomerations due to the moisture content of the ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP), the morphology of the microparticles contributed to the stability of the final product and reduce the loss of total phenolic content. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spray%20drying" title="spray drying">spray drying</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=propolis" title=" propolis"> propolis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=maltodextrin" title=" maltodextrin"> maltodextrin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=encapsulation" title=" encapsulation"> encapsulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=scanning%20electron%20microscopy" title=" scanning electron microscopy"> scanning electron microscopy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62826/spray-drying-and-physico-chemical-microbiological-evaluation-of-ethanolic-extracts-of-propolis" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/62826.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">287</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion vs Oral Anticoagulants in Atrial Fibrillation and Coronary Stenting. The objective of the study was to determine whether left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) could be a feasible option and benefit these patients. To this end, we studied the impact of LAAO plus antiplatelet drugs vs oral anticoagulants (OAC) (including direct OAC) plus antiplatelet drugs in these patients’ long-term outcomes. Methods: The results of 207 consecutive patients with NVAF who underwent coronary stenting were analyzed. A total of 146 patients were treated with OAC (75 with acenocoumarol, 71 with direct OAC) while 61 underwent LAAO. The median follow-up was 35 months. Patients also received antiplatelet therapy as prescribed by their cardiologist. The study received the proper ethical oversight. Results: Age (mean 75.7 years), and the past medical history of stroke were similar in both groups. However, the LAAO group had more unfavorable characteristics (history of coronary artery disease [CHA2DS2-VASc], and significant bleeding [BARC ≥ 2] and HAS-BLED). The occurrence of major adverse events (death, stroke/transient ischemic events, major bleeding) and major cardiovascular events (cardiac death, stroke/transient ischemic attack, and myocardial infarction) were significantly higher in the OAC group compared to the LAAO group: 19.75% vs 9.06% (HR, 2.18; P = .008) and 6.37% vs 1.91% (HR, 3.34; P = .037), respectively. Conclusions: In patients with NVAF undergoing coronary stenting, LAAO plus antiplatelet therapy produced better long-term outcomes compared to treatment with OAC plus antiplatelet therapy despite the unfavorable baseline characteristics of the LAAO group. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stents" title="stents">stents</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=atrial%20fibrillation" title=" atrial fibrillation"> atrial fibrillation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anticoagulants" title=" anticoagulants"> anticoagulants</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=left%20atrial%20appendage%20occlusion" title=" left atrial appendage occlusion"> left atrial appendage occlusion</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183786/left-atrial-appendage-occlusion-vs-oral-anticoagulants-in-atrial-fibrillation-and-coronary-stenting-the-desafio-registry" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183786.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">68</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> New Derivatives 7-(diethylamino)quinolin-2-(1H)-one Based Chalcone Colorimetric Probes for Detection of Bisulfite Anion in Cationic Micellar Media</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20E.%20Quintero">Guillermo E. However, it is well-known that HSO3- can cause health problems like asthma and allergic reactions in people. Due to the above, the development of analytical methods for detecting this ion has gained great interest. In line with the above, the current use of colorimetric and/or fluorescent probes as a detection technique has acquired great relevance due to their high sensitivity and accuracy. In this context, 2-quinolinone derivatives have been found to possess promising activity as antiviral agents, sensitizers in solar cells, antifungals, antioxidants, and sensors. In particular, 7-(diethylamino)-2-quinolinone derivatives have attracted attention in recent years since their suitable photophysical properties become promising fluorescent probes. In Addition, there is evidence that photophysical properties and reactivity can be affected by the study medium, such as micellar media. Based on the above background, 7-(diethylamino)-2-quinolinone derivatives based chalcone will be able to be incorporated into a cationic micellar environment (Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB). Furthermore, the supramolecular control induced by the micellar environment will increase the reactivity of these derivatives towards nucleophilic analytes such as HSO3- (Michael-type addition reaction), leading to the generation of new colorimetric and/or fluorescent probes. In the present study, two derivatives of 7-(diethylamino)-2-quinolinone based chalcone DQD1-2 were synthesized according to the method reported by the literature. These derivatives were structurally characterized by 1H, 13C NMR, and HRMS-ESI. In addition, UV-VIS and fluorescence studies determined absorption bands near 450 nm, emission bands near 600 nm, fluorescence quantum yields near 0.01, and fluorescence lifetimes of 5 ps. In line with the foregoing, these photophysical properties aforementioned were improved in the presence of a cationic micellar medium using CTAB thanks to the formation of adducts presenting association constants of the order of 2,5x105 M-1, increasing the quantum yields to 0.12 and the fluorescence lifetimes corresponding to two lifetimes near to 120 and 400 ps for DQD1 and DQD2. Besides, thanks to the presence of the micellar medium, the reactivity of these derivatives with nucleophilic analytes, such as HSO3-, was increased. This was achieved through kinetic studies, which demonstrated an increase in the bimolecular rate constants in the presence of a micellar medium. Finally, probe DQD1 was chosen as the best sensor since it was assessed to detect HSO3- with excellent results. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bisulfite%20detection" title="bisulfite detection">bisulfite detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cationic%20micelle" title=" cationic micelle"> cationic micelle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=colorimetric%20probes" title=" colorimetric probes"> colorimetric probes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quinolinone%20derivatives" title=" quinolinone derivatives"> quinolinone derivatives</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161044/new-derivatives-7-diethylaminoquinolin-2-1h-one-based-chalcone-colorimetric-probes-for-detection-of-bisulfite-anion-in-cationic-micellar-media" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161044.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">94</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Simulation of Technological, Energy and GHG Comparison between a Conventional Diesel Bus and E-bus: Feasibility to Promote E-bus Change in High Lands Cities</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Riofrio%20Jonathan">Riofrio Jonathan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fernandez%20Guillermo"> Fernandez Guillermo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Renewable energy represented around 80% of the energy matrix for power generation in Ecuador during 2020, so the deployment of current public policies is focused on taking advantage of the high presence of renewable sources to carry out several electrification projects. These projects are part of the portfolio sent to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as a commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the established national determined contribution (NDC). In this sense, the Ecuadorian Organic Energy Efficiency Law (LOEE) published in 2019 promotes E-mobility as one of the main milestones. In fact, it states that the new vehicles for urban and interurban usage must be E-buses since 2025. As a result, and for a successful implementation of this technological change in a national context, it is important to deploy land surveys focused on technical and geographical areas to keep the quality of services in both the electricity and transport sectors. Therefore, this research presents a technological and energy comparison between a conventional diesel bus and its equivalent E-bus. Both vehicles fulfill all the technical requirements to ride in the study-case city, which is Ambato in the province of Tungurahua-Ecuador. In addition, the analysis includes the development of a model for the energy estimation of both technologies that are especially applied in a highland city such as Ambato. The altimetry of the most important bus routes in the city varies from 2557 to 3200 m.a.s.l., respectively, for the lowest and highest points. These operation conditions provide a grade of novelty to this paper. Complementary, the technical specifications of diesel buses are defined following the common features of buses registered in Ambato. On the other hand, the specifications for E-buses come from the most common units introduced in Latin America because there is not enough evidence in similar cities at the moment. The achieved results will be good input data for decision-makers since electric demand forecast, energy savings, costs, and greenhouse gases emissions are computed. Indeed, GHG is important because it allows reporting the transparency framework that it is part of the Paris Agreement. Finally, the presented results correspond to stage I of the called project “Analysis and Prospective of Electromobility in Ecuador and Energy Mix towards 2030” supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high%20altitude%20cities" title="high altitude cities">high altitude cities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20planning" title=" energy planning"> energy planning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NDC" title=" NDC"> NDC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-buses" title=" e-buses"> e-buses</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-mobility" title=" e-mobility"> e-mobility</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142982/simulation-of-technological-energy-and-ghg-comparison-between-a-conventional-diesel-bus-and-e-bus-feasibility-to-promote-e-bus-change-in-high-lands-cities" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/142982.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">151</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Effect of Self-Lubricating Carbon Materials on the Tribological Performance of Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nayeli%20Camacho">Nayeli Camacho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fernanda%20Lara-Perez"> Fernanda Lara-Perez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carolina%20Ortega-Portilla"> Carolina Ortega-Portilla</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Diego%20G.%20Espinosa-Arbelaez"> Diego G. Wear damage to UHMWPE articulating surface is inevitable due to the natural sliding and rolling movements of the knee. This generates a considerable amount of wear debris, which results in mechanical instability of the joint, reduces joint mobility, increases pain with detrimental biologic responses, and causes component loosening. The presence of wear particles has been closely related to adverse reactions in the knee joint surrounding tissue, especially for particles in the range of 0.3 to 2 μm. Carbon-based materials possess excellent mechanical properties and have shown great promise in tribological applications. In this study, diamond-like carbon coatings (DLC) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used to decrease the wear rate of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. A titanium doped DLC (Ti-DLC) was deposited by magnetron sputtering on stainless steel precision spheres while CNTs were used as a second phase reinforcement in UHMWPE at a concentration of 1.25 wt.%. A comparative tribological analysis of the wear of UHMWPE and UHMWPE-CNTs with a stainless steel counterpart with and without Ti-DLC coating is presented. The experimental wear testing was performed on a pin-on-disc tribometer under dry conditions, using a reciprocating movement with a load of 1 N at a frequency of 2 Hz for 100,000 and 200,000 cycles. The wear tracks were analyzed with high-resolution scanning electron microscopy to determine wear modes and observe the size and shape of the wear debris. Furthermore, profilometry was used to study the depth of the wear tracks and to map the wear of the articulating surface. The wear tracks at 100,000 and 200,000 cycles on all samples were relatively shallow, and they were in the range of average roughness. It was observed that the Ti-DLC coating decreases the mass loss in the UHMWPE and the depth of the wear track. The combination of both carbon-based materials decreased the material loss compared to the system of stainless steel and UHMWPE. Burnishing of the surface was the predominant wear mode observed with all the systems, more subtle for the systems with Ti-DLC coatings. Meanwhile, in the system composed of stainless steel-UHMWPE, the intrinsic surface roughness of the material was completely replaced by the wear tracks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CNT%20reinforcement" title="CNT reinforcement">CNT reinforcement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self-lubricating%20materials" title=" self-lubricating materials"> self-lubricating materials</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ti-DLC" title=" Ti-DLC"> Ti-DLC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UHMWPE%20tribological%20performance" title=" UHMWPE tribological performance"> UHMWPE tribological performance</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/112426/effect-of-self-lubricating-carbon-materials-on-the-tribological-performance-of-ultra-high-molecular-weight-polyethylene" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/112426.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">110</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> A Cloud-Based Federated Identity Management in Europe</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jesus%20Carretero">Jesus Carretero</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mario%20Vasile"> Mario Vasile</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Guillermo%20Izquierdo"> Guillermo Izquierdo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Javier%20Garcia-Blas"> Javier Garcia-Blas</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Currently, there is a so called ‘identity crisis’ in cybersecurity caused by the substantial security, privacy and usability shortcomings encountered in existing systems for identity management. Federated Identity Management (FIM) could be solution for this crisis, as it is a method that facilitates management of identity processes and policies among collaborating entities without enforcing a global consistency, that is difficult to achieve when there are ID legacy systems. To cope with this problem, the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) initiative proposed in 2014 a federated solution in anticipation of the adoption of the Regulation (EU) N°910/2014, the so-called eIDAS Regulation. At present, a network of eIDAS Nodes is being deployed at European level to allow that every citizen recognized by a member state is to be recognized within the trust network at European level, enabling the consumption of services in other member states that, until now were not allowed, or whose concession was tedious. This is a very ambitious approach, since it tends to enable cross-border authentication of Member States citizens without the need to unify the authentication method (eID Scheme) of the member state in question. However, this federation is currently managed by member states and it is initially applied only to citizens and public organizations. The goal of this paper is to present the results of a European Project, named eID@Cloud, that focuses on the integration of eID in 5 cloud platforms belonging to authentication service providers of different EU Member States to act as Service Providers (SP) for private entities. We propose an initiative based on a private eID Scheme both for natural and legal persons. The methodology followed in the eID@Cloud project is that each Identity Provider (IdP) is subscribed to an eIDAS Node Connector, requesting for authentication, that is subscribed to an eIDAS Node Proxy Service, issuing authentication assertions. To cope with high loads, load balancing is supported in the eIDAS Node. The eID@Cloud project is still going on, but we already have some important outcomes. First, we have deployed the federation identity nodes and tested it from the security and performance point of view. The pilot prototype has shown the feasibility of deploying this kind of systems, ensuring good performance due to the replication of the eIDAS nodes and the load balance mechanism. Second, our solution avoids the propagation of identity data out of the native domain of the user or entity being identified, which avoids problems well known in cybersecurity due to network interception, man in the middle attack, etc. Last, but not least, this system allows to connect any country or collectivity easily, providing incremental development of the network and avoiding difficult political negotiations to agree on a single authentication format (which would be a major stopper). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a
