am a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20181111010055/http://ctesiphon.hypotheses.org/membres/chercheurs/michael-richard-jackson-bonner" target="_blank">member</a> of the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20181111010055/http://ctesiphon.hypotheses.org/" target="_blank">CTESIPHON</a> project based in Paris at the Agence nationale de la recherche which is part of the Centre nationale de la recherce scientifique (<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20181111010055/http://www.cnrs.fr/" target="_blank">CNRS</a>). CTESIPHON is a 30-month-long project devoted to the study of literary sources for the history of Iran in the sixth century.</font></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><font size="3"><br/></font></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><span style="font-size:medium;line-height:1.25"> I have begun my contribution to this project by preparing a thorough set of notes on the part of the Shahnameh dealing with the reign of Khusraw Anushirvan: my focus so far has been on the </span><i style="font-size:medium;line-height:1.25">meaning</i><span style="font-size:medium;line-height:1.25"> of the text, and I have based my work so far on the edition prepared by Khaleghi-Motlagh. I have sought to explain unfamiliar words and difficult lines, and to take note of personal and place names, in order to establish the precise significance of the text, with a view to establishing separate episodes and historical notices which may be tested against the evidence found in historical sources of known value. In the same vein, I have determined the main sources which shall serve as comparanda. These are: 1. Ammianus Marcellinus; 2. Lazarus of Pharp; 3. Elishe (the Armenian); 4. Pseudo-Joshua Stylites; 5. Procopius; 6. Malalas; 7. Agathias; 8. Theophylact; 9. Theophanes of Byzantium; 10. Menander Protector; 11. Pseudo-Sebeos. These were chosen because they are contemporary, or near contemporary sources with the events which the Shahnameh purports to describe. Other, minor sources will certainly be consulted also. I shall prepare a full translation of the Shahnameh canto on Anushirvan also. The copious set of notes which I have already prepared will make this process easier.</span></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><font size="3"><br/></font></div><div style="text-align:center"><font size="3">From the project website:</font></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><span style="font-size:medium;line-height:1.25"><br/></span></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><span style="font-size:medium;line-height:1.25">Le VIe siècle, et en particulier le règne de Khusro Ier (531-579), qui fut le plus brillant de la dynastie sassanide, est une période-charnière dans l’histoire de l’Iran dans l’Antiquité, période d’expansion militaire, de restructuration de l’appareil de l’État et d’assimilation de nombreux aspects culturels des pays conquis ou voisins. Les sources qui permettent de reconstruire l’histoire de ce règne proviennent de domaines divers marqués par de nombreuses langues. Cette grande diversité des sources, tant dans leur nature que dans leur mode d’expression, peut être un obstacle pour l’historien qui cherche à tirer de cet ensemble hétérogène des informations pertinentes.</span></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><span style="line-height:1.25;font-size:medium"><br/></span></div><div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><span style="line-height:1.25;font-size:medium">En vue de contribuer à cette histoire, ce projet propose de croiser, sous une forme clairement formulée et aisément consultable, des données inédites ou peu connues, qui jusque-là n’ont jamais fait l’objet d’exploitation et d’analyses. Elles appartiennent traditionnellement à des champs disciplinaires distincts : 1) sceaux sassanides inscrits fréquemment en pehlevi, mais parfois aussi en syriaque et utilisés par toutes les strates de la société ; 2) monnaies sassanides qui représentent l’émanation par excellence du pouvoir étatique et sont inscrites en pehlevi, la langue officielle de l’État ; 3) littérature martyrologique en syriaque émanant de la communauté chrétienne de l’empire ; 4) littérature grecque byzantine qui offre un regard extérieur à l’empire sassanide et permet une meilleure compréhension de l’histoire de la région à cette époque ; 5) littérature épique en persan qui véhicule la tradition des chroniques sassanides. La conjugaison de ces sources permettra également de croiser des perceptions et des interprétations différentes venant des communautés mazdéennes, chrétiennes byzantines, chrétiennes d’Iran, ou musulmanes.</span></div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"> </div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"> </div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN:center"><font size="3">Here is the proposal that I wrote at the earliest stage of the project:</font></div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"> </div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><font size="3">Le Shahnameh, épopée persane rédigée par Daqiqi et achevée en 1010 par Firdousi, est une oeuvre littéraire majeure qui nous relate le passé de l’Iran : des vestiges de la mythologie iranienne à la conquête arabe. Ce poème expose l’histoire des dynasties qui se sont succédées en Iran et leurs relations, parfois conflictuelles, avec leurs voisins. La section consacrée à la dynastie Sassanide offre des informations historiques de valeur, corroborées par d’autres sources fiables.</font></div><font size="3"> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><br/>La partie du poème qui traite du règne de Khusro Ier Anoshirwan par exemple demeure le cantique le plus détaillé du Shahnameh mais aussi le récit historique le plus long et le plus complet dont nous disposons aujourd’hui concernant le règne de ce roi.</div> <div style="TEXT-ALIGN:left"><br/>Ne surestimons-nous pas certaines chroniques grecques contemporaines du règne de Khusro Ier, alors que leurs auteurs étaient clairement hostiles à son règne ? Certes nous disposons de sources arabes antérieures à Firdousi, comme Dinawari et Tabari dont les écrits sont des plus sérieux ; toutefois, la transposition en arabe de concepts et de noms en moyen-iranien pose parfois problème, alors que ces mêmes termes sont bien transcrits en persan. Ainsi est levé le lourd handicap de la transposition d’une langue indo-européenne en langue sémitique.
