id="caption-attachment-20398" class="wp-caption-text">Colors Hunter – Chasseur de Couleurs / Moment Open</figcaption></figure> <p> </p> <p>by <strong><a href="https://twitter.com/katewoodford2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kate Woodford</a></strong></p> <p>This week, I’m looking at the language we use to refer to <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/source#cald4-1">sources</a></strong> – that is, the places, things, or people that provide or produce a particular thing. (That ‘thing’ can be a physical object or something abstract, such as knowledge or an idea.) As usual, I’m including both single words and phrases in the post.<span id="more-19864"></span></p> <p>Starting with single words, we talk about a <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/stock#cald4-1-1">stock</a></strong> or a <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/supply#cald4-2">supply</a></strong> of something, meaning an amount of something that is available for use:</p> <p><em>Her goal was to increase the city’s affordable housing stock.</em></p> <p><em>Fish stocks in the region are running dangerously low.</em></p> <p><em>The seeds also provide a food supply for wintering flocks of birds.</em></p> <p>The noun <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/store#cald4-1-2">store</a></strong> is very similar but is often used for a supply of something that is kept for later use:</p> <p><em>In the building’s cellar they found a vast store of explosives.</em></p> <p><em>In such circumstances, the body’s fat stores are quickly depleted.</em></p> <p>To emphasize that a supply of something is very large, adjectives such as <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/endless#cald4-1">endless</a></strong> and <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/never-ending#cald4-1">never-ending</a></strong> are sometimes used:</p> <p><em>She has a seemingly endless supply of anecdotes about her time there.</em></p> <p><em>People just assume that there’s a never-ending supply of money.</em></p> <p>There are a number of useful phrases in this area, most of which are positive. For example, a <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/treasure-trove">treasure trove</a></strong> is a place or an object that provides a great number of valuable or useful things. (The single word <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/trove#cald4-1">trove</a></strong> is sometimes used with the same meaning):</p> <p><em>The archive is a treasure trove of information about this period</em><em>.</em></p> <p><em> In the basement, they discovered a trove of documents relating to the case.</em></p> <p>We talk about <strong>a rich seam</strong> or <strong>a rich vein</strong> of stories, inspiration, comedy, etc. meaning a situation or experience that produces a lot of stories or inspiration, etc.:</p> <p><em>His time in the army supplied him with a rich seam of anecdotes.</em></p> <p><em>The class system has always provided British writers with a rich vein of humour. </em></p> <p>The phrase <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/fount-of-all-knowledge-gossip-wisdom-etc#cald4-1">the fount of all knowledge/wisdom</a></strong> is a slightly literary or humorous way of saying ‘the person or place from which all information on a particular subject comes’:</p> <p><em>He speaks as if he’s the fount of all knowledge.</em></p> <p><em>She was widely regarded as the fount of all wisdom on the subject.</em></p> <p>Another ‘source’ phrase has a more negative association. A <strong><a href="https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/breeding-ground#cald4-1">breeding ground</a></strong> for something harmful is the place where it develops quickly and easily, literally or metaphorically:</p> <p><em>Chopping boards are a breeding ground for bacteria and require regular cleaning.</em></p> <p><em>The slums were breeding grounds for violence. </em></p> <p>That concludes my post on words and phrases meaning ‘source’. I hope you found it useful. Do feel free to suggest any other areas of English that you would like me to cover.</p> <div class="sharedaddy sd-sharing-enabled"><div class="robots-nocontent sd-block sd-social sd-social-icon sd-sharing"><h3 class="sd-title">Share this:</h3><div class="sd-content"><ul><li class="share-facebook"><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-shared="sharing-facebook-19864" class="share-facebook sd-button share-icon no-text" href="https://dictionaryblog.cambridge.org/2024/09/11/treasure-troves-and-endless-supplies-words-and-phrases-meaning-source/?share=facebook" target="_blank" title="Click to share on Facebook" ><span></span><span class="sharing-screen-reader-text">Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)</span></a></li><li class="share-twitter"><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-shared="sharing-twitter-19864" class="share-twitter sd-button share-icon no-text" href="https://dictionaryblog.cambridge.org/2024/09/11/treasure-troves-and-endless-supplies-words-and-phrases-meaning-source/?share=twitter" target="_blank" title="Click to share on Twitter" ><span></span><span class="sharing-screen-reader-text">Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)</span></a></li><li class="share-reddit"><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-shared="" class="share-reddit sd-button share-icon no-text" href="https://dictionaryblog.cambridge.org/2024/09/11/treasure-troves-and-endless-supplies-words-and-phrases-meaning-source/?share=reddit" target="_blank" title="Click to share on Reddit" ><span></span><span class="sharing-screen-reader-text">Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)</span></a></li><li class="share-email"><a rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" data-shared="" class="share-email sd-button share-icon no-text" href="mailto:?subject=%5BShared%20Post%5D%20Treasure%20troves%20and%20endless%20supplies%20%28Words%20and%20phrases%20meaning%20%E2%80%98source%E2%80%99%29&body=https%3A%2F%2Fdictionaryblog.cambridge.org%2F2024%2F09%2F11%2Ftreasure-troves-and-endless-supplies-words-and-phrases-meaning-source%2F&share=email" target="_blank" title="Click to email a link to a friend" data-email-share-error-title="Do you have email set up?" data-email-share-error-text="If you're having problems sharing via email, you might not have email set up for your browser. I think some of them can be quite tricky to understand. i think it might be because I am trying to learn by reading explanations and examples rather than having the experience of the taste it self. Perhaps in your post you could mention foods and drinks associated with each of the smells so that we could try ourselves.</p> <div class='jetpack-comment-likes-widget-wrapper jetpack-likes-widget-unloaded' id='like-comment-wrapper-18458032-252153-674376e40be77' data-src='https://widgets.wp.com/likes/#blog_id=18458032&comment_id=252153&origin=dictionaryblog.cambridge.org&obj_id=18458032-252153-674376e40be77' data-name='like-comment-frame-18458032-252153-674376e40be77'> <div class='likes-widget-placeholder comment-likes-widget-placeholder comment-likes'><span class='loading'>Loading...</span></div> <div class='comment-likes-widget jetpack-likes-widget comment-likes'><span class='comment-like-feedback'></span><span class='sd-text-color'></span><a class='sd-link-color'></a></div> </div> </div><!-- .comment-content --> <div class="comment-metadata"> <a href="https://dictionaryblog.cambridge.org/2024/09/11/treasure-troves-and-endless-supplies-words-and-phrases-meaning-source/#comment-252153"> <time datetime="2024-09-11T15:30:39+01:00"> September 11, 2024 at 3:30 pm </time> </a> <span class="reply"><a rel="nofollow" class="comment-reply-link" href="#comment-252153" data-commentid="252153" data-postid="19864" data-belowelement="div-comment-252153" data-respondelement="respond" data-replyto="Reply to Pedro" aria-label="Reply to Pedro">Reply</a></span> </div><!-- .comment-metadata --> </article><!-- .comment-body --> <ol class="children"> <li id="comment-252192" class="comment byuser comment-author-katewoodford bypostauthor odd alt depth-2"> <article id="div-comment-252192" class="comment-body"> <footer class="comment-meta"> <div class="comment-author vcard"> <img alt='' src='https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/bac5c241ed0266a1b470307bc436f58f?s=60&d=identicon&r=g' srcset='https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/bac5c241ed0266a1b470307bc436f58f?s=120&d=identicon&r=g 2x' class='avatar avatar-60 photo' height='60' width='60' decoding='async'/> <b class="fn">Kate Woodford</b> </div><!-- .comment-author --> </footer><!-- .comment-meta --> <div class="comment-content"> <p>You’re welcome!
