By some odd chance, I happened upon a new copy of her second book, [b:The Likeness|1914973|The Likeness (Dublin Murder Squad, #2)|Tana French|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1348934952l/1914973._SY75_.jpg|6504351], in the library just waiting to be checked out, while <u>In the Woods</u> had a wait list of at least 100 people. I followed with [b:Faithful <u class="showmore_hide">Place|7093952|Faithful Place (Dublin Murder Squad #3)|Tana French|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1550500994l/7093952._SX50_.jpg|7350661], immersed myself in Ireland of forty years ago and promptly forgot to get on the waiting list for Woods. Nataliya's lovely review reminded me what I was missing (here: <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/412630092)" rel="nofollow" target="_top">http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/412630092)</a><br><br>For a first book, <u>Woods</u> is impressive, not only because French takes risks with her narrative. It's a psychological mystery, an exploration of friendship and a slow disintegration of personality. I loved it, even as I dreaded the direction of the story. In brief, Rob Ryan is a detective on Dublin's Murder Squad. One day, the squad gets its first woman detective, Cassie Maddox. The two have an instant attraction and immediately begin a deep friendship. They happen to catch a case in which a 12 year-old girl is found murdered at an archeological dig, right where a highway exchange is supposed to be built (shades of Arthur Dent that I half-heartedly tried to ignore). Perhaps completely coincidentally, it is in the same small suburb that Ryan's two childhood friends disappeared when they were twelve. Ryan himself has no memory of the incident, and very few memories of the times after, but the case brings bits flashing back.<br><br>What a challenge! Ryan tells us from the start: "What I am telling you, before you begin my story, is this--two things: I crave truth. And I lie." Is our narrator unreliable? Or not? The outright acknowledgement that he might not be kept me guessing. At first, I loved his narrative voice. Descriptions of himself and his two twelve-year-old friends, 'Jamie,' and Peter, reminded me indelibly of Bradbury's [b:Something Wicked This Way Comes|248596|Something Wicked This Way Comes (Green Town, #2)|Ray Bradbury|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1409596011l/248596._SY75_.jpg|1183550] and the gold-edged memories of summer days and best friends. Ryan captures some of that lost intimacy with Cassie, and it seems almost the first time since then that he has re-connected with another person. His voice had me chuckling with humor and sighing at his cynicism (see my numerous updates while I was getting my car's oil changed). Then oh-so-slowly the voice changed, subtly, distractedly. I won't say too much more except that it was extremely well done <spoiler> and the character I loved at the beginning, I almost hated by the end. Not that he would have cared; he hated himself too. </spoiler><br><br>I love French's writing; the vivid descriptions, the integration of memories into narrative and her character development of her primary characters. Perhaps it fell apart a little at the end, and the red herrings weren't developed enough to be seriously considered. It felt a little more hurried after the slow pace of the beginning, but these are minor quibbles.<br><br>The finish was stunning, if by 'stunning,' you mean a slap to the face right after someone answers your questions. Although I never deliberately avoid spoilers, for some reason I had not read any reviews before starting <u>Woods</u> that discussed various issues with the ending. Somewhat discombobulated, I went looking around for insight into French's process, and why she choose to do what she did.<br><br>Yep, definitely kept me thinking after I closed the pages. But also while I read them. Read in large, uninterrupted blocks of time. Trust me; you will better be able to appreciate French's character evolution (or dissolution) and the many layers of the plot become all the more shocking when they've had the chance to properly build.<br><br>The second thing I rarely do: spoiler part of my review. For my memory and discussion's sake, I must be specific. <u class="showmore_hide"><br><br>Once again, French impresses. This time she pulls in interesting plotting followed by astonishing character development. Yet it is unsettling enough that I don't know if it will get a second read. That's okay--parts of it are still etched in my mind.<br><br>Scorcher Kennedy is one of the stars of the Murder Squad. Although he's recently come off a case that's left him with a figurative black eye (one of the earlier books, and for the life of me, I can't remember why), he gets a chance to shine when an entire suburban family is found murdered and he catches the case. His new partner is a rookie early in his Murder career, and somewhat unusually, becomes second when Kennedy vouches for him. Like all French's narrators, Kennedy has a troubled past, coincidentally tied to the same area as the murder case. <br><br>Perhaps that is part of French's overall message--the people drawn to solving horrific crime are as troubled as the victims and criminals. This time, however, French challenges herself with a narrator and protagonist who is not altogether likeable, and whose strength is his meticulous attention to detail. He delineates his world into black and white, and his neat organization constrains her ability to vividly flavor a world. Still, she sneaks in a bit of vivid imagery here and there:<br><br><b>"Only teenagers think boring is bad. Adults, grown men and women who've been around the block a few times, know that boring is a gift straight from God."</b> (p.11)<br><br><b>"It made her shoulder jump, the sudden feel of our fingers probing deep into their lives." (p.251).<br><br>"I could smell the hospital off her, disinfected and polluting." <br><br>"There was a moment of silence that could have sliced skin." </b><br><br><spoiler>Here's where French kicked my ass: almost every single character in this story is concealing something. 'That's not unusual,' you think. Her genius: virtually all of them melt under pressure. By avoiding rigid definitions of 'good/bad' and 'sane/insane,' the reader should start to understand the barrier is permeable for all of us, given the right set of circumstances. While at first I thought Kennedy's mentally ill sister a plot crutch, it turns out she is just the extreme end of the observable scale. <br><br>Now, I'm serious. Don't read the next part unless you want to talk specifics.<br><br><spoiler>The first clue things are starting to go bad--well, the first blaze orange road sign--is when he decides against confiding in Richie. He almost shares his helplessness coping with Dina--he's so close, he can envision what intimacy may look like. But he pulls back and loses the moment; it was clear it would become a pivot point, but not quite how. It becomes a motif; Kennedy allowing himself to relax into the give-and-take of an equal, discovering a thoughtful person that might be perfect for a long-term working partnership.<br><br>Kennedy is so certain his worldview is right, but his certainty is built on sand. It's the supposition that if bad things happen, usually people deserve them in some fashion. French demonstrates the weakness of his belief time and time again, but then allows Kennedy the opportunity to pontificate to Richie as he orients him to the job. He even repeats some of these thoughts to himself, affirming what he enjoys about his career. <br><b>"This is the gift we offer them, people who loved the victims: rest... I understand how immense that is, and how priceless."</b> (p.250)<br><br>His confrontation with Dina was utterly heartbreaking, when he's begging for an explanation for her madness, and for her interpretation of Broken Harbor. I wanted to cheer and cry at the same time. Her moment of frustrated self-awareness was so perfect:<br><b>"You keep trying to <i>organize</i> me, file me away all neat and make sense, like I'm one of your cases... There isn't any <i>why</i>. That's what I mean, trying to organize me. I'm not crazy <i>because</i> anything. I just am." Her voice was clear, steady, matter-of-fact, and she was looking at me straight on, with something that could almost have been compassion"</b> (p.287).<br><br>French does get the chance to demonstrate her descriptive prowess when she describes the drowning and the fisherman discovering the mom's dress. It resonates all the more for the restrained writing earlier. Her imagery is ominous, nothing wasted, entirely evocative. The sinister atmosphere carries over into the squad room: <b>"The moment I said <i>Broken Harbor</i> to O'Kelly, every faded scar in my mind had lit up like a beacon. I had walked the glittering lines of those scars, obedient as a farm animal, from that moment straight to this one."</b><br><br>I also admire French's use of internet forums as a way of demonstrating Pat's gradual unhinging. When he first posts, can anyone doubt his sincerity? As his situation becomes more and more ridiculous, with more caveats and exceptions, does it not conjure other posters encountered on the internet and the gradual way subtext is revealed? I thought it quite clever; there is no need for Kennedy to say, "look, he's crazy," when we can read, draw similar conclusions. <br><br>Ultimately, French is an amazing writer, even when I don't like the ending. Note--never be a character in a French book. While French is ostensibly writing murder mysteries, she is also writing thoughtful psychological profiles of a detective heavily involved in the case. In Faithful Place we dive into Undercover Detective Frank's history, following him as he is drawn back into drama from a home he left decades ago. A suitcase discovered in an abandoned house opens up a host of memories and leads to the discovery of a dead woman. He finds very little of his dysfunctional family has <u class="showmore_hide">changed, and resolves to leave them behind once more as soon as the case is in competent hands. <br><br>While the mystery pulls the reader in and subtly drives the plot, the focus is equally on character, relationships and setting. French is brilliant at capturing the mood of a place and time, wrapping it up in a small snow globe--and then shaking it up on the unfortunate lead character. It becomes evident that Frank is replicating many of his father's dysfunctional behaviors in his family interactions. Interestingly for me, I've been able to identify the murderer in both the books I've read. I've come to suspect this is deliberate on the part of French, giving the reader further insight into the lead's particular emotional short-sightedness, and building suspense around that fault line. It's an unusual and delicate narrative choice, but I think French handles it well without much loss of tension.<br><br>I wondered somewhat at some of the descriptive choices, especially musical, that clearly anchor the story to a specific place and time. The family discussing a potential national economic disaster stands out as well. Somehow it felt jarring more than evocative, but those instances were rare. My most serious quibble comes from the narrative voice; I found myself not entirely believing in Frank's narrative from the perspective of a middle-aged, rough-edged undercover cop. Mostly, I found myself wondering at dichotomy between the sensitivity and nostalgia of his memories, the fact that he seemed emotionally stuck at eighteen after a tragic first love, and his isolated, ruthless existence as a undercover detective. Scenes with his informant in the investigating squad came closest to the manipulation and ruthlessness I expected after reading The Likeness. Somewhat lyrical for a detective/mystery, but it added to the overall enjoyment. While the plot of replacing someone who was already using an assumed identity is improbable, French did a wonderful job of making it almost believable. The plot has a strong psychological angle, as the orphaned Cassie goes undercover, and finds herself in a close-knit circle of friends that are almost like family. Luckily for Cassie, they all have a rule of "no pasts," which helps protect <u class="showmore_hide">her from inconsistencies in her story. She slowly spirals into worse and worse decision-making, and we can see how her desire for family is clouding her judgement. The murderer is scarcely a surprise to the reader, but the undertone of danger remains because she isn't seeing clearly anymore.</u><span class="showmore_showlink">… (<a href="#"
