node-emergency clearfix"> <div class="content"> <div class="standfirst"> <p>A refugee crisis in South Sudan is threatening a humanitarian crisis with tens of thousands arriving at already over-crowded and flooded camps. Our teams are providing these new arrivals with clean water, food and shelter, but we need your support if we are to help more children.</p> </div> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="269" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130126113147if_/http://www.youtube.com/embed/lZz9zofatOo?rel=0" width="470"></iframe><p>The refugees are converging on South Sudan’s Unity and Upper Nile states, with many eating roots to survive the gruelling journey.  Some have even been forced to abandon elderly and weak relatives along the way.  </p><p>Seasonal rains have turned the region into a quagmire making the living conditions and the aid effort far more difficult.</p><p>Many of the refugees have been walking for weeks without enough food, and are arriving weak and desperate for help. 60 percent are children and many are desperately hungry.   </p><p>The refugee influx comes on top of a severe hunger crisis affecting South Sudan. The UN estimates that 2.4 million people – more than a quarter of the population – will face food insecurity this year, doubling initial estimates, after a poor harvest and rampant inflation have seen food prices soar in recent months.</p><p>South Sudan became independent from Sudan on 9 July 2011. The country is facing an economic crisis exacerbated by the shut down of oil production, wiping out 98% of national income</p><p><strong>We’re responding to this crisis. </strong><strong>Please help us reach as many children as possible: </strong></p><h2>What we’re doing</h2><ul><li>We’re on the ground and rapidly scaling up our emergency response. We’ve been operating in 4 of the 5 border states for many years, and are in a strong position to help children fleeing the violence</li><li>We already run programmes, including on education, child protection, health and food security/livelihoods in these states.</li><li>Child tracing and family reunification is an important part of our response and we're working flat-out to reunite children with their families, relatives and communities</li><li>We’re protecting them from harm by setting up child friendly spaces.</li><li>We are working closely with the UN and other agencies to assess the continuing needs of people fleeing the violence so we can respond as quickly as possible.</li><li>We’re providing lifesaving community and facility-based health care. We work with local partners to support over 60 primary health care facilities, reaching over 335,000 children and nearly half a million adults.</li><li>We’re running nutrition programmes, so families can access a more nutritious diet. We established the programme in 2010, including urgent life saving activities that target acutely malnourished children under five and their mothers.</li><li>We’re protecting families from food insecurity by protecting their assets and finding ways to help young people grow their income, such as Cash for Work and vocational training. </li><li>We’re distributing non-food items and are helping children get a better education by increasing access to early childhood development and primary schooling; training teachers and supplying teaching and learning materials.</li></ul> </div> </div>
