There are various types of gait human follows during locomotion and arm swing is one of the most important factors which controls and differentiates human gaits. Earlier studies declared a 7% reduction in the metabolic cost due to the arm swing. In this research, we compared different types of arm swings in terms of metabolic cost reduction and then suggested, designed, fabricated and tested a quasi-passive upper body exoskeleton to study the metabolic cost reduction in the folded arm walking gate scenarios. Our experimental results validate a 10% reduction in the metabolic cost of walking aided by the application of the proposed exoskeleton. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=arm%20swing" title="arm swing">arm swing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MET%20%28metabolic%20equivalent%20of%20a%20task%29" title=" MET (metabolic equivalent of a task)"> MET (metabolic equivalent of a task)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=calorimeter" title=" calorimeter"> calorimeter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=oxygen%20consumption" title=" oxygen consumption"> oxygen consumption</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=upper%20body%20quasi-passive%20exoskeleton" title=" upper body quasi-passive exoskeleton"> upper body quasi-passive exoskeleton</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/102630/reduction-in-the-metabolic-cost-of-human-walking-gaits-using-quasi-passive-upper-body-exoskeleton" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/102630.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">157</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Flexural Analysis of Palm Fiber Reinforced Hybrid Polymer Matrix Composite</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=G.Venkatachalam">G.Venkatachalam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gautham%20Shankar"> Gautham Shankar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dasarath%20Raghav"> Dasarath Raghav</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Krishna%20Kuar"> Krishna Kuar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Santhosh%20Kiran"> Santhosh Kiran</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bhargav%20Mahesh"> Bhargav Mahesh</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Uncertainty in the availability of fossil fuels in the future and global warming increased the need for more environment-friendly materials. In this work, an attempt is made to fabricate a hybrid polymer matrix composite. The blend is a mixture of General Purpose Resin and Cashew Nut Shell Liquid, a natural resin extracted from cashew plant. Palm fiber, which has high strength, is used as a reinforcement material. The fiber is treated with alkali (NaOH) solution to increase its strength and adhesiveness. Parametric study of flexure strength is carried out by varying alkali concentration, duration of alkali treatment and fiber volume. Taguchi L9 Orthogonal array is followed in the design of experiments procedure for simplification. With the help of ANOVA technique, regression equations are obtained which gives the level of influence of each parameter on the flexure strength of the composite. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adhesion" title="Adhesion">Adhesion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CNSL" title=" CNSL"> CNSL</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Flexural%20Analysis" title=" Flexural Analysis"> Flexural Analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hybrid%20Matrix%20Composite" title=" Hybrid Matrix Composite"> Hybrid Matrix Composite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Palm%20Fiber" title=" Palm Fiber"> Palm Fiber</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/29720/flexural-analysis-of-palm-fiber-reinforced-hybrid-polymer-matrix-composite" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/29720.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">405</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Optimization of Hemp Fiber Reinforced Concrete for Various Environmental Conditions</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zoe%20Chang">Zoe Chang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Max%20Williams"> Max Williams</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gautham%20Das"> Gautham Das</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incorporation of hemp fibers (HF) in concrete. Hemp fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) is becoming more popular as an alternative for regular mix designs. This study was done to evaluate the compressive strength of HFRC regarding mix procedure. Hemp fibers were obtained from the manufacturer and hand-processed to ensure uniformity in width and length. The fibers were added to the concrete as both wet and dry mixes to investigate and optimize the mix design process. Results indicated that the dry mix had a compressive strength of 1157 psi compared to the wet mix of 985 psi. This dry mix compressive strength was within range of the standard mix compressive strength of 1533 psi. The statistical analysis revealed that the mix design process needs further optimization and uniformity concerning the addition of HF. Regression analysis revealed the standard mix design had a coefficient of 0.9 as compared to the dry mix of 0.375, indicating a variation in the mixing process. While completing the dry mix, the addition of plain hemp fibers caused them to intertwine, creating lumps and inconsistency. However, during the wet mixing process, combining water and hemp fibers before incorporation allows the fibers to uniformly disperse within the mix; hence the regression analysis indicated a better coefficient of 0.55. This study concludes that HRFC is a viable alternative to regular mixes; however, more research surrounding its characteristics needs to be conducted. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hemp%20fibers" title="hemp fibers">hemp fibers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hemp%20reinforced%20concrete" title=" hemp reinforced concrete"> hemp reinforced concrete</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wet%20%26%20dry" title=" wet &amp; dry"> wet &amp; dry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=freeze%20thaw%20testing" title=" freeze thaw testing"> freeze thaw testing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compressive%20strength" title=" compressive strength"> compressive strength</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136604/optimization-of-hemp-fiber-reinforced-concrete-for-various-environmental-conditions" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136604.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">200</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> A Multi-Scale Approach for the Analysis of Fiber-Reinforced Composites</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Azeez%20Shaik">Azeez Shaik</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Amit%20Salvi"> Amit Salvi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=B.%20P.%20Gautham"> B. New class of 2D and 3D textile and woven fabric composites offer excellent fracture toughens as they bridge the cracks formed during fracture. Due to complexity of their fiber architectures and its resulting composite microstructures, optimized design and analysis of these structures is very complicated. A traditional homogenization approach is typically used to analyze structures made up of these materials. This approach usually fails to predict damage initiation as well as damage propagation and ultimate failure of structure made up of woven and textile composites. This study demonstrates a methodology to analyze woven and textile composites by using the multi-level multi-scale modelling approach. In this approach, a geometric repetitive unit cell (RUC) is developed with all its constituents to develop a representative volume element (RVE) with all its constituents and their interaction modeled correctly. The structure is modeled based on the RUC/RVE and analyzed at different length scales with desired levels of fidelity incorporating the damage and failure. The results are passed across (up and down) the scales qualitatively as well as quantitatively from the perspective of material, configuration and architecture. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cohesive%20zone" title="cohesive zone">cohesive zone</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=multi-scale%20modeling" title=" multi-scale modeling"> multi-scale modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rate%20dependency" title=" rate dependency"> rate dependency</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RUC" title=" RUC"> RUC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=woven%20textiles" title=" woven textiles"> woven textiles</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35426/a-multi-scale-approach-for-the-analysis-of-fiber-reinforced-composites" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35426.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">361</span> </span> </div> </div> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">&copy;
