Without the quotes, the search would return results for <b>man</b> and <b>match</b> (<b>of</b> and <b>the</b> will be ignored as they are such common words).<p>Even without using quotes the search engine will only return results matching all of your search terms. There is no need to use the word AND between your search terms to specify this.<p> <b>Using a combination of words and phrases</b><p>Individual words and phrases can be usefully combined. For example entering: <b>"european integration" Brussels parliament</b> will return results matching the phrase <b>european integration</b> and containing the words <b>Brussels</b> and <b>parliament</b>. Contrast this with the search <b>european integration Brussels parliament</b>, which will return results matching all of those words, including results where european does not occur in the phrase "european integration".<p><b>Automatic phrase matching</b><p>You may not need to do this for most searches, especially if you choose to order your results most relevant first. When ordered in this way, the search engine puts results containing your search terms in a phrase higher up the list of results than general keyword matches.
