<t><p class="indent1">Those who have seen him will say, ‘Where is he?’ <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“He flies away like a dream and cannot be found; <t><p class="indent1">Yes, he is chased away like a vision of the night. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“The eye which saw him sees him no longer, <t><p class="indent1">Neither does his [accustomed] place behold him any longer. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“His sons favor the poor [and pay his obligations], <t><p class="indent1">And his hands give back his [ill-gotten] wealth. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“His bones are full of youthful strength <t><p class="indent1">But it lies down with him in the dust. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>“Though evil <i>and</i> wickedness are sweet in his mouth <t><p class="indent1">And he hides it under his tongue, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Though he desires it and will not let it go <t><p class="indent1">But holds it in his mouth, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span><i>Yet</i> his food turns [to poison] in his stomach; <t><p class="indent1">It is the venom of vipers within him. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“He swallows [his ill-gotten] riches, <t><p class="indent1">But will vomit them up; <t><p class="indent1">God will drive them out of his belly. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“He sucks the poison of vipers [which ill-gotten wealth contains]; <t><p class="indent1">The viper’s tongue slays him. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>“He does not look at the rivers, <t><p class="indent1">The flowing streams of honey and butter [to enjoy his wealth]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“He gives back what he has labored for <i>and</i> attained <t><p class="indent1">And cannot swallow it [down to enjoy it]; <t><p class="indent1">As to the riches of his labor, <t><p class="indent1">He cannot even enjoy them. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>“For he has oppressed and neglected the poor; <t><p class="indent1">He has violently taken away houses which he did not build. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“Because he knew no quietness <i>or</i> calm within him [because of his greed], <t><p class="indent1">He does not retain anything he desires. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“There is nothing left of what he devoured; <t><p class="indent1">Therefore his prosperity does not endure. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“In the fullness of his excess (great abundance) he will be in trouble; <t><p class="indent1">The hand of everyone who suffers will come against him [he is miserable on every side]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>“When he fills his belly, <t><p class="indent1"><i>God</i> will send His fierce anger on him <t><p class="indent1">And will rain it upon him while he is eating. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>“He may flee from the iron weapon, <t><p class="indent1"><i>But</i> the bow of bronze will pierce him through. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>“<i>The arrow</i> is drawn forth and it comes out of his back [after passing through his body]; <t><p class="indent1">Yes, the glittering point comes out of his gall. <t><p class="indent1">Terrors march in upon him; <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Complete darkness (misfortune) is held in reserve for his treasures. <t><p class="indent1">An unfanned fire will devour him; <t><p class="indent1">It will consume the survivor in his tent. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>“The heavens will reveal his wickedness <i>and</i> guilt, <t><p class="indent1">And the earth will rise up against him. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/job/20-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>“The produce <i>and</i> increase of his house will depart [with the victors];
