Operations promotes the deployment of technology and the adoption of best practices to facilitate the smooth flow of goods on the Nation's transportation system and across our borders. The Intermodal Freight Technology program conducts operational tests of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies, supports the development of tools to evaluate infrastructure and operational needs at border crossings, and works with our partners to develop standards for exchanging electronic freight data.</p> <p>Information is included on</p> <ul> <li><a href="best_practice/index.htm">Deployment of Best Practices</a></li> <li><a href="/freight/technology/emergency_routing/">Emergency Routing</a> </li> <li><a href="productivity/index.htm">Productivity</a></li> <li><a href="urban_goods/index.htm">Urban Goods Movement</a></li> </ul> <h2>Initiatives and Programs</h2> <ul> <li><a href="http://www.its.dot.gov/press/2011/mobility_app.htm">Mobility Applications Program</a> – The Mobility Program will be concluding the first phase of activity focused on foundational research and moving into a second phase focused on applications development and testing, initiating coordinated research activities on a portfolio of ten high-priority mobility applications. </li> <li><em>e-Permitting/Virtual Weigh Stations</em> – The Office of Freight Management & Operations recently completed two initiatives that addressed electronic permitting and virtual weigh stations. An assessment of "e-Permitting" efforts underway in New York, Tennessee and Florida was completed in partnership with the I-95 Corridor Coalition. Three documents were completed documenting the "State of the Practice" in state level efforts to advance virtual weigh stations; the "Concept of Operations for Virtual Weigh Stations", and "Implementation Plan for Virtual Weigh Stations". Additional information will be posted when it becomes available.</li> <li><em>2006 European Truck Enforcement Technology Scan Implementation Activities</em> – In 2006, ten transportation professionals participated on a scan of six European nations (Slovenia, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and France) sponsored by FHWA's Office of Freight Management & Operations, AASHTO and NCHRP.
