if<MH518> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>you prefer<MH2896a, 5869>, I will give<MH5414> you what<MH4242> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>it is<MH4242> worth<MH4242> in money<MH3701>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>But Naboth<MH5022> said<MH559> to Ahab<MH256>, “The LORD<MH3068> forbid<MH2486> me that I would give<MH5414> you the inheritance<MH5159> of my fathers<MH1>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>So Ahab<MH256> entered<MH935> his house<MH1004> sullen<MH5620> and furious<MH2198> because<MH5921> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>answer<MH1697> that Naboth<MH5022> the Jezreelite<MH3158> had given<MH1696> to him, since he said<MH559>, “I will not give<MH5414> you the inheritance<MH5159> of my fathers<MH1>.” And he lay<MH7901> down<MH7901> on his bed<MH4296> and turned<MH5437> his face<MH6440> away<MH5437>, and ate<MH398> no<MH3808> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>food<MH3899>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But Jezebel<MH348> his wife<MH802> came<MH935> to him and said<MH1696> to him, “How<MH4100> is it that your spirit<MH7307> is so sullen<MH5620> that you are not eating<MH398> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>food<MH3899>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So he said<MH1696> to her, “<i>It is</i> because<MH3588> I was speaking<MH1696> to Naboth<MH5022> the Jezreelite<MH3158> and saying<MH559> to him, ‘Give<MH5414> me your vineyard<MH3754> for money<MH3701>; or<MH176> else, if<MH518> it pleases<MH2655> you, I will give<MH5414> you a vineyard<MH3754> in<MH8478> place<MH8478> of<MH8478> it.’ But he said<MH559>, ‘I will not give<MH5414> you my vineyard<MH3754>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Jezebel<MH348> his wife<MH802> said<MH559> to him, “Do you now<MH6258> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>reign<MH6213a, 4410> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>? Arise<MH6965>, eat<MH398> bread<MH3899>, and let your heart<MH3820> be<MH3190> joyful<MH3190>; I will give<MH5414> you the vineyard<MH3754> of Naboth<MH5022> the Jezreelite<MH3158>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So she wrote<MH3789> letters<MH5612> in Ahab’s<MH256> name<MH8034> and sealed<MH2856> them with his seal<MH2368>, and sent<MH7971> the letters<MH5612> to the elders<MH2205> and to the nobles<MH2715> who<MH834> were living<MH3427> with Naboth<MH5022> in his city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now she had written<MH3789> in the letters<MH5612>, saying<MH559>, “Proclaim<MH7121> a fast<MH6685> and seat<MH3427> Naboth<MH5022> at the head<MH7218> of the people<MH5971a>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>and seat<MH3427> two<MH8147> worthless<MH1100> men<MH376> opposite<MH5048> him, and have them testify<MH5749b> against him, saying<MH559>, ‘You <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>cursed<MH1288> God<MH430> and the king<MH4428>.’ Then take<MH3318> him out<MH3318> and stone<MH5619> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>to death<MH4191>.” <p class="hdg">Jezebel’s Plot</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So the men<MH376> of his city<MH5892b>, the elders<MH2205> and the nobles<MH2715> who<MH834> lived<MH3427> in his city<MH5892b>, did<MH6213a> just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> Jezebel<MH348> had sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> to them, just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> it was written<MH3789> in the letters<MH5612> which<MH834> she had sent<MH7971> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>They proclaimed<MH7121> a fast<MH6685>, and seated<MH3427> Naboth<MH5022> at the head<MH7218> of the people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then the two<MH8147> worthless<MH1100> men<MH376> came<MH935> in<MH935> and sat<MH3427> opposite<MH5048> him; and the worthless<MH1100> men<MH376> testified<MH5749b> against him, against Naboth<MH5022>, before<MH5048> the people<MH5971a>, saying<MH559>, “Naboth<MH5022> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>cursed<MH1288> God<MH430> and the king<MH4428>.” So they took<MH3318> him outside<MH4480, 2351> the city<MH5892b> and stoned<MH5619> him <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>to death<MH4191> with stones<MH68>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then they sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> to Jezebel<MH348>, saying<MH559>, “Naboth<MH5022> has been stoned<MH5619> and is dead<MH4191>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And when Jezebel<MH348> heard<MH8085> that Naboth<MH5022> had been stoned<MH5619> and was dead<MH4191>, Jezebel<MH348> said<MH559> to Ahab<MH256>, “Arise<MH6965>, take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of the vineyard<MH3754> of Naboth<MH5022>, the Jezreelite<MH3158>, which<MH834> he refused<MH3985> to give<MH5414> you for money<MH3701>; for Naboth<MH5022> is not alive<MH2416a>, but dead<MH4191>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>When Ahab<MH256> heard<MH8085> that Naboth<MH5022> was dead<MH4191>, Ahab<MH256> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> to go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the vineyard<MH3754> of Naboth<MH5022> the Jezreelite<MH3158>, to take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of it. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Elijah<MH452> the Tishbite<MH8664b>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“Arise<MH6965>, go<MH3381> down<MH3381> to meet<MH7122> Ahab<MH256> king<MH4428> of Israel<MH3478>, who<MH834> is in Samaria<MH8111>; behold<MH2009>, he is in the vineyard<MH3754> of Naboth<MH5022>, where<MH834, 8033> he has gone<MH3381> down<MH3381> to take<MH3423> possession<MH3423> of it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And you shall speak<MH1696> to him, saying<MH559>, ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: “Have you murdered<MH7523> and also<MH1571> taken<MH3423> possession<MH3423>?”’ And you shall speak<MH1696> to him, saying<MH559>, ‘The LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> this<MH3541>: “In the place<MH4725> where<MH834> the dogs<MH3611> licked<MH3952> up<MH3952> the blood<MH1818> of Naboth<MH5022>, the dogs<MH3611> will lick<MH3952> up<MH3952> your blood<MH1818>, yours<MH859> as<MH1571> well<MH1571>.”’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Ahab<MH256> said<MH559> to Elijah<MH452>, “Have you found<MH4672> me, enemy<MH340> of mine?” And he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>answered<MH559>, “I have found<MH4672> <i>you,</i> because<MH3282> you have given<MH4376> yourself over<MH4376> to do<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, I am bringing<MH935> disaster<MH7463a> upon you, and I will utterly<MH1197a> sweep<MH1197a> you away<MH1197a>, and will eliminate<MH3772> from Ahab<MH256> every<MH8366> male<MH8366, 7023>, both <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>bond<MH6113> and free<MH5800a> in Israel<MH3478>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>and I will make<MH5414> your house<MH1004> like the house<MH1004> of Jeroboam<MH3379> the son<MH1121> of Nebat<MH5028>, and like the house<MH1004> of Baasha<MH1201> the son<MH1121> of Ahijah<MH281>, because<MH413> of the provocation<MH3708a> with which<MH834> you have provoked<MH3707> <i>Me</i> to<MH3707> anger<MH3707>, and <i>because</i> you have misled<MH2398> Israel<MH3478> into<MH2398> sin<MH2398>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> has also<MH1571> spoken<MH1696> of Jezebel<MH348>, saying<MH559>, ‘The dogs<MH3611> will eat<MH398> Jezebel<MH348> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>territory<MH2426> of Jezreel<MH3157>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>The one belonging to Ahab<MH256>, who dies<MH4191> in the city<MH5892b>, the dogs<MH3611> will eat<MH398>; and the one who dies<MH4191> in the field<MH7704>, the birds<MH5775> of the sky<MH8064> will eat<MH398>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>There certainly<MH7534b> was no<MH3808> one like Ahab<MH256> who<MH834> gave<MH4376> himself over<MH4376> to do<MH6213a> evil<MH7451a> in the sight<MH5869> of the LORD<MH3068>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>because<MH834> Jezebel<MH348> his wife<MH802> incited<MH5496> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>He also acted<MH8581> very<MH3966> despicably<MH8581> in following<MH1980, 310> idols<MH1544>, conforming to everything<MH3605> that the Amorites<MH567> had done<MH6213a>, whom<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> drove<MH3423> out<MH3423> from the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Yet it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when Ahab<MH256> heard<MH8085> these<MH428> words<MH1697>, that he tore<MH7167> his clothes<MH899b> and put<MH7760> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>on sackcloth<MH8242> and fasted<MH6684>, and he lay<MH7901> in sackcloth<MH8242> and went<MH1980> about<MH1980> despondently<MH328>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Elijah<MH452> the Tishbite<MH8664b>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_kings/21-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>“Do you see<MH7200> how<MH3588> Ahab<MH256> has humbled<MH3665> himself before<MH4480, 6440> Me?
