We change tires, clean the HVAC, and inspect our roof and gutters—the list goes on and on. Usually, we do these things to prevent bad things from happening. But have you ever stopped and considered the benefits?</p> <p>Holdings maintenance—making sure your library’s WorldCat holdings are accurate and up to date—is a good example of how important maintenance is. But there’s still so much more at play. In fact, there are major benefits for your library, your users, and the wider library community.</p> <p><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/4-reasons-to-update-holdings/" class="btn btn-prime btn-read-more2 btn-read-more btn-small">Read More</a></p> </div> </article> <hr> <article class="blog-item post-5082 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-analytics category-big-data category-cataloging category-metadata category-technology tag-cataloging tag-collections tag-collective-collection tag-data tag-shared-print tag-technology"> <header> <h2 class="title"> <a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/collective-intelligence/">Local decision support based on collective intelligence</a> </h2> <div class="meta-info"> <img data-del="avatar" src='https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/andy_breeding_author.jpg' class='avatar pp-user-avatar avatar-90 wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-90 photo ' height='90' width='90'/> <ul> <li> <a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/author/andy-breeding/" title="Posts by Andy Breeding" rel="author">Andy Breeding</a></li> <li> 07 February 2023</li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/analytics/">Analytics</a></li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/big-data/">Big data</a></li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/cataloging/">Cataloging</a></li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/metadata/">Metadata</a></li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/technology/">Technology</a></li> </ul> </div> </header> <div class="the-post-thumbnail"><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/collective-intelligence/"></a></div> <div class="post-body"> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5083" src="https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/collective_intelligence.jpg" alt="Local decision support based on collective intelligence" width="1080" height="344" srcset="https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/collective_intelligence.jpg 1080w, https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/collective_intelligence-300x96.jpg 300w, https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/collective_intelligence-1024x326.jpg 1024w, https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/collective_intelligence-768x245.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px" /></p> <p>Is there anything more thrilling than finding unexpected, useful answers during an information treasure hunt? While working on a shared print program years ago, I got the chance to use a variety of data sets and programming skills to uncover hidden strengths within library collections. It was important work. That knowledge helped showcase how each library contributed and revealed new ways to leverage collective materials.</p> <p>The ability to use analytics tools to investigate relationships between the collections of many libraries and come away with actionable, local insights was exhilarating. But because they have a time machine, they can just wait until later, go back in time before they’re lost, and leave them right next to where they are “now” for convenience.</p> <p>It’s funny, of course. But also, kind of … smart. It shows that if you can count on someone doing something in the future, you can make current plans based on that knowledge. The trick is, each of us has to know what the other is planning.</p> <p>Bill and Ted can rely on a future (and past) version of themselves to complete their plans. But the dedicated professionals associated with MOUG have kept at it over more than four decades because of the guiding notion that if you can make products and services function well for the complexities of music resources, they will work well for any resources.</p> <p><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/the-music-oclc-users-group-you-say-you-want-an-evolution/" class="btn btn-prime btn-read-more2 btn-read-more btn-small">Read More</a></p> </div> </article> <hr> <article class="blog-item post-2426 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-metadata category-research tag-metadata"> <header> <h2 class="title"> <a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/a-rose-by-any-other-name-may-not-get-your-institutions-research-funded/">A rose by any other name … may not get your institution’s research funded</a> </h2> <div class="meta-info"> <img data-del="avatar" src='https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/rebecca_bryant_author.png' class='avatar pp-user-avatar avatar-90 wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-90 photo ' height='90' width='90'/> <ul> <li> <a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/author/rebecca-bryant/" title="Posts by Rebecca Bryant, Ph.D." rel="author">Rebecca Bryant, Ph.D.</a></li> <li> 29 August 2018</li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/metadata/">Metadata</a></li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/research/">Research</a></li> </ul> </div> </header> <div class="the-post-thumbnail"><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/a-rose-by-any-other-name-may-not-get-your-institutions-research-funded/"></a></div> <div class="post-body"> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2427" src="https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/rose-banner.jpg" alt="rose-banner" width="1160" height="370" /></p> <p>In thinking about names within the library world, Shakespeare’s famous line has always frustrated me. A rose still smells as sweet if called something else. Sure, but if you call it something else, I probably won’t be able to ever find it elsewhere, sow it, grow it, enjoy it …</p> <p>When it comes to names and the work libraries do, I prefer these two quotes:</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px;">“Fate tried to conceal him by naming him Smith.” —Oliver Wendell Holmes</p> <p style="padding-left: 30px;">“You’re not a star until they can spell your name in Karachi.” —Humphrey Bogart</p> <p>In a research environment, we need ways to reference people and organizations by unique “names”—identifiers—that are persistent, and actionable. And in some cases, that can mean the difference between getting funded or not.</p> <p><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/a-rose-by-any-other-name-may-not-get-your-institutions-research-funded/" class="btn btn-prime btn-read-more2 btn-read-more btn-small">Read More</a></p> </div> </article> <hr> <article class="blog-item post-1417 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-cataloging category-metadata tag-data-quality tag-metadata"> <header> <h2 class="title"> <a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/the-legendary-apple-cake-record-story/">The legendary “apple cake” record story</a> </h2> <div class="meta-info"> <img data-del="avatar" src='https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/LangKem_150x150.jpg' class='avatar pp-user-avatar avatar-90 wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-90 photo ' height='90' width='90'/> <ul> <li> <a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/author/kem-lang/" title="Posts by Kem Lang" rel="author">Kem Lang</a></li> <li> 20 April 2017</li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/cataloging/">Cataloging</a></li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/metadata/">Metadata</a></li> </ul> </div> </header> <div class="the-post-thumbnail"><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/the-legendary-apple-cake-record-story/"></a></div> <div class="post-body"> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-1402 size-full" src="https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/50th-Anniversary-revised.jpg" alt="50th-Anniversary-revised" width="1160" height="370" /></p> <p>You can find links to thousands (maybe millions) of recipes using the <a href="http://experimental.worldcat.org/xfinder/cookbookfinder.html">WorldCat Cookbook Finder</a>. The metadata entered into WorldCat is what powers the Cookbook Finder and many other library services.</p> <p>But can you find an actual recipe within those 394 million bibliographic records?</p> <p>For one (or more?) brief times during OCLC’s history, yes you could.</p> <p>And today? We don&#8217;t like people to make assumptions about us based on single aspects of our lives. Why is it, then, that we are so often excited to associate ourselves with causes, teams, groups, bands, artists and places using very specific labels? We display bumper stickers and wear T-shirts, pins and buttons with short, easily identifiable phrases that link us to ideas we find important.</p> <p>Obviously, the difference here is that in one case someone else is labeling us, but in the other, we label ourselves, on our own terms, using our own personally selected metadata.</p> <p>As a button aficionado, this subject fascinates me. As a librarian, it inspires me.</p> <p><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/visible-metadata-pushing-the-right-buttons/" class="btn btn-prime btn-read-more2 btn-read-more btn-small">Read More</a></p> </div> </article> <hr> <article class="blog-item post-434 post type-post status-publish format-standard hentry category-metadata category-workflows tag-cataloging tag-data-quality tag-metadata"> <header> <h2 class="title"> <a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/defending-differences/">Defending Differences from Duplicate Detection</a> </h2> <div class="meta-info"> <img data-del="avatar" src='https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Jay-Weitz.jpg' class='avatar pp-user-avatar avatar-90 wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-90 photo ' height='90' width='90'/> <ul> <li> <a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/author/jay-weitz/" title="Posts by Jay Weitz" rel="author">Jay Weitz</a></li> <li> 02 May 2016</li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/metadata/">Metadata</a></li> <li><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/topic/workflows/">Workflows</a></li> </ul> </div> </header> <div class="the-post-thumbnail"><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/defending-differences/"></a></div> <div class="post-body"> <p><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/2016-05-2-defending-differences.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-436"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-436 alignnone" src="https://blog.oclc.org/next/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/2016-05-2-defending-differences.jpg" alt="2016-05-2 defending differences" width="1160" height="370" /></a></p> <p><a href="https://www.oclc.org/worldcat/catalog.en.html">WorldCat</a> is certainly the largest database of bibliographic data on Earth. Probably the universe, but let’s stick with what we know for sure. Among those 360 million bibliographic records, we figure there must be at least a few duplicates. In a database that size, built by tens of thousands of catalogers in thousands of institutions over the course of four decades, duplicate records are an unfortunate fact.</p> <p>For most of those four decades, OCLC has also been hard at work trying to reduce the number of duplicate records through both manual and automated means. We began merging duplicates manually in 1983 and recently, specially-trained members of the Cooperative have been <a style="position: absolute; top: -2600px;" href="https://www.orologiitalia.to">repliche orologi di lusso</a> merging records as part of our ongoing Merge Pilot. From 1991 through 2005, OCLC’s automated Duplicate Detection and Resolution (DDR) software ran through WorldCat sixteen times, merging over 1.5 million duplicates. That original DDR dealt with books records only. We at OCLC were both painfully aware and constantly reminded of this limitation by you, our users.</p> <p><a href="https://blog.oclc.org/next/defending-differences/" class="btn btn-prime
