like new design possibilities, weight-saving solutions, ease of manufacture, and simplification of assemblies. These are all unquestionable technical or financial assets. As to the environmental aspect, additive manufacturing is often discussed whether it is the best solution to decarbonize our industries or if conventional manufacturing remains cleaner. This work presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) comparison based on the technological case of a motorbike swing-arm. We compare the original equipment manufacturer part made with conventional manufacturing (CM) methods to an additive manufacturing (AM) version printed using the laser powder bed fusion process. The AM version has been modified and optimized to achieve better dynamic performance without any regard to weight saving. Lightweight not being a priority in the creation of the 3D printed part brings us a unique perspective in this study. To achieve the LCA, we are using the open-source life cycle, and sustainability software OpenLCA combined with the ReCiPe 2016 at midpoint and endpoint level method. This allows the calculation and the presentation of the results through indicators such as global warming, water use, resource scarcity, etc. The results are then showing the relative impact of the AM version compared to the CM one and give us a key to understand and answer questions about the environmental sustainability of additive manufacturing. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=additive%20manufacturing" title="additive manufacturing">additive manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20impact" title=" environmental impact"> environmental impact</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=life%20cycle%20assessment" title=" life cycle assessment"> life cycle assessment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laser%20powder%20bed%20fusion" title=" laser powder bed fusion"> laser powder bed fusion</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139498/investigating-the-environmental-impact-of-additive-manufacturing-compared-to-conventional-manufacturing-through-life-cycle-assessment" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139498.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">263</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">58</span> Quantification Model for Capability Evaluation of Optical-Based in-Situ Monitoring System for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) Process</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Song%20Zhang">Song Zhang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hui%20Wang"> Hui Wang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Henrich%20Schleifenbaum"> Johannes Henrich Schleifenbaum</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Due to the increasing demand for quality assurance and reliability for additive manufacturing, the development of an advanced in-situ monitoring system is required to monitor the process anomalies as input for further process control. Optical-based monitoring systems, such as CMOS cameras and NIR cameras, are proved as effective ways to monitor the geometrical distortion and exceptional thermal distribution. Therefore, many studies and applications are focusing on the availability of the optical-based monitoring system for detecting varied types of defects. However, the capability of the monitoring setup is not quantified. In this study, a quantification model to evaluate the capability of the monitoring setups for the LPBF machine based on acquired monitoring data of a designed test artifact is presented, while the design of the relevant test artifacts is discussed. The monitoring setup is evaluated based on its hardware properties, location of the integration, and light condition. Methodology of data processing to quantify the capacity for each aspect is discussed. The minimal capability of the detectable size of the monitoring set up in the application is estimated by quantifying its resolution and accuracy. The quantification model is validated using a CCD camera-based monitoring system for LPBF machines in the laboratory with different setups. The result shows the model to quantify the monitoring system's performance, which makes the evaluation of monitoring systems with the same concept but different setups possible for the LPBF process and provides the direction to improve the setups. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=data%20processing" title="data processing">data processing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=in-situ%20monitoring" title=" in-situ monitoring"> in-situ monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LPBF%20process" title=" LPBF process"> LPBF process</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optical%20system" title=" optical system"> optical system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quantization%20model" title=" quantization model"> quantization model</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=test%20artifact" title=" test artifact"> test artifact</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139140/quantification-model-for-capability-evaluation-of-optical-based-in-situ-monitoring-system-for-laser-powder-bed-fusion-lpbf-process" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139140.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">197</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">57</span> Macroscopic Support Structure Design for the Tool-Free Support Removal of Laser Powder Bed Fusion-Manufactured Parts Made of AlSi10Mg</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tobias%20Schmithuesen">Tobias Schmithuesen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Henrich%20Schleifenbaum"> Johannes Henrich Schleifenbaum</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The additive manufacturing process laser powder bed fusion offers many advantages over conventional manufacturing processes. For example, almost any complex part can be produced, such as topologically optimized lightweight parts, which would be inconceivable with conventional manufacturing processes. A major challenge posed by the LPBF process, however, is, in most cases, the need to use and remove support structures on critically inclined part surfaces (α < 45 ° regarding substrate plate). These are mainly used for dimensionally accurate mapping of part contours and to reduce distortion by absorbing process-related internal stresses. Furthermore, they serve to transfer the process heat to the substrate plate and are, therefore, indispensable for the LPBF process. A major challenge for the economical use of the LPBF process in industrial process chains is currently still the high manual effort involved in removing support structures. According to the state of the art (SoA), the parts are usually treated by simple hand tools (e.g., pliers, chisels) or by machining (e.g., milling, turning). New automatable approaches are the removal of support structures by means of wet chemical ablation and thermal deburring. According to the state of the art, the support structures are essentially adapted to the LPBF process and not to potential post-processing steps. The aim of this study is the determination of support structure designs that are adapted to the mentioned post-processing approaches. In the first step, the essential boundary conditions for complete removal by means of the respective approaches are identified. Afterward, a representative demonstrator part with various macroscopic support structure designs will be LPBF-manufactured and tested with regard to a complete powder and support removability. Finally, based on the results, potentially suitable support structure designs for the respective approaches will be derived. The investigations are carried out on the example of the aluminum alloy AlSi10Mg. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=additive%20manufacturing" title="additive manufacturing">additive manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laser%20powder%20bed%20fusion" title=" laser powder bed fusion"> laser powder bed fusion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laser%20beam%20melting" title=" laser beam melting"> laser beam melting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=selective%20laser%20melting" title=" selective laser melting"> selective laser melting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=post%20processing" title=" post processing"> post processing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tool-free" title=" tool-free"> tool-free</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wet%20chemical%20ablation" title=" wet chemical ablation"> wet chemical ablation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermal%20deburring" title=" thermal deburring"> thermal deburring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aluminum%20alloy" title=" aluminum alloy"> aluminum alloy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=AlSi10Mg" title=" AlSi10Mg"> AlSi10Mg</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/116718/macroscopic-support-structure-design-for-the-tool-free-support-removal-of-laser-powder-bed-fusion-manufactured-parts-made-of-alsi10mg" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/116718.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">91</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">56</span> Shopping Cart System: Load Balancing and Fault Tolerance in the OSGi Service Platform</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Irina%20Astrova">Irina Astrova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Arne%20Koschel"> Arne Koschel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thole%20Schneider"> Thole Schneider</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Westhuis"> Johannes Westhuis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=J%C3%BCrgen%20Westerkamp"> Jürgen Westerkamp</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The main purpose of this paper was to find a simple solution for load balancing and fault tolerance in OSGi. Same-day delivery, quick order processing and rapidly growing ranges of articles are only some of the prevailing challenges. One key aspect of the performance of an intra-logistics system is how often and in which amplitude congestions and dysfunctions affect the processing operations. By gaining knowledge of the so called ‘performance availability’ of such a system during the planning stage, oversizing and wasting can be reduced whereas planning transparency is increased. State of the art for the determination of this KPI are simulation studies. However, their structure and therefore their results may vary unforeseeably. This article proposes a concept for the establishment of ‘certified’ and hence reliable and comparable simulation models. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intra-logistics" title="intra-logistics">intra-logistics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=performance%20availability" title=" performance availability"> performance availability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=simulation" title=" simulation"> simulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=warehousing" title=" warehousing"> warehousing</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16846/reliability-of-intra-logistics-systems-simulating-performance-availability" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/16846.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">454</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">51</span> Percolation Transition in an Agglomeration of Spherical Particles</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20J.%20Schneider">Johannes J. The current study tests the validity of Feldstein&ndash;Horioka puzzle for 5 BRICS countries. The sample period of the study runs from 2001 to 2014. The study uses the following parameter estimates well known as the Fully Modified OLS (FMOLS), and Dynamic OLS (DOLS). The results of the study show that investment and savings are cointegrated in the long run. The parameters estimated using FMOLS and DOLS are 0.85 and 0.74, respectively. These results imply that policy makers within BRICS countries have to consider flexible monetary and fiscal policy instruments to influence the mobility of capital with the bloc. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Feldstein%20and%20Horioka%20puzzle" title="Feldstein and Horioka puzzle">Feldstein and Horioka puzzle</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=saving%20and%20investment" title=" saving and investment"> saving and investment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=panel%20models" title=" panel models"> panel models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=BRICS%20countries" title=" BRICS countries"> BRICS countries</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61954/testing-the-validity-of-feldstein-horioka-puzzle-in-brics-countries" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/61954.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">259</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">49</span> An Analysis of the Relationship between Manufacturing Growth and Economic Growth in South Africa: A Cointegration Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20T.%20Tsoku">Johannes T. The paper employed the Johansen cointegration to test the Kaldor&rsquo;s hypothesis. The Johansen cointegration results revealed that there is a long run relationship between GDP, manufacturing, service and employment. The Granger causality results revealed that there is a unidirectional causality running from manufacturing growth to GDP growth. The overall findings of the study confirm that Kaldor&rsquo;s first law of growth is applicable in South African economy. Therefore, investment strategies and policies should be alignment towards promoting growth in the manufacturing sector in order to boost the economic growth of South Africa. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cointegration" title="cointegration">cointegration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=economic%20growth" title=" economic growth"> economic growth</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kaldor%E2%80%99s%20law" title=" Kaldor’s law"> Kaldor’s law</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=manufacturing%20growth" title=" manufacturing growth"> manufacturing growth</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60865/an-analysis-of-the-relationship-between-manufacturing-growth-and-economic-growth-in-south-africa-a-cointegration-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60865.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">387</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">48</span> Digital Transformation in Production Planning and Control: Evaluation of the Organizational Readiness</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tobias%20Wissing">Tobias Wissing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20Burggr%C3%A4f"> Peter Burggräf</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Wagner"> Johannes Wagner</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Cost pressure, competitiveness and the increasing turbulence of globalized saturated markets has been the driver for a variety of research activities in the field of production planning and control (PPC) during the past decades. For some time past an increasing awareness for innovative technologies in terms of Industry 4.0 can be noticed. Although there are many promising approaches a solely installation of those smart solutions will not maximize the PPC performance. To accelerate the successful digital transformation the cooperation between employee and technology also has to be adapted. The existing processes and organizational structures might be not sufficient to maximize the utilization of technological innovations. This paper presents the key results of an extensive study which was conducted by the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of the RWTH Aachen University to evaluate the current situation and examine the organizational readiness for this digital transformation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cyber-physical%20production%20system" title="cyber-physical production system">cyber-physical production system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20transformation" title=" digital transformation"> digital transformation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=industry%204.0" title=" industry 4.0"> industry 4.0</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=production%20planning%20and%20control" title=" production planning and control"> production planning and control</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56498/digital-transformation-in-production-planning-and-control-evaluation-of-the-organizational-readiness" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56498.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">353</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">47</span> The Educational, Social and Cultural Significance of Boys Choirs</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Van%20Der%20Sandt">Johannes Van Der Sandt</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Worldwide, there are many boys choirs, but the Drakensberg Boys Choir is one of only a few of its kind: selected from a residential boys choir school using choral music as a significant vehicle for holistic education. With ongoing debates as to whether single-gender education is advantageous for boys, and research on the missing males in choirs problem, this presentation‘s purpose is to explore the perceived benefits and values for boys singing in the world-renowned Drakensberg Boys Choir, and to establish educational grounds for the existence of boys choirs. Semi-structured questionnaires were given to choristers, known as Drakies, to ascertain their perceptions of their choir membership. Their experiences are noted in terms of musical, social and behavioral skills gained. The main emerging themes in each category are discussed in order to lay claim to the assumption that boys choirs exist not only to entertain, and nor are their goals purely musical or pedagogical, but that they can be regarded as unique, cultural artifacts that aid boys‘ development into well-equipped and well-rounded young men. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=boys" title="boys">boys</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=choirs" title=" choirs"> choirs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=choral" title=" choral"> choral</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=education" title=" education"> education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=skills" title=" skills"> skills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=values" title=" values"> values</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60290/the-educational-social-and-cultural-significance-of-boys-choirs" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/60290.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">200</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">46</span> Operation Parameters of Vacuum Cleaned Filters</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wilhelm%20Hoeflinger">Wilhelm Hoeflinger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Thomas%20Laminger"> Thomas Laminger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Wolfslehner"> Johannes Wolfslehner</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> For vacuum cleaned dust filters, used e. g. in textile industry, there exist no calculation methods to determine design parameters (e. g. traverse speed of the nozzle, filter area...). In this work a method to calculate the optimum traverse speed of the nozzle of an industrial-size flat dust filter at a given mean pressure drop and filter face velocity was elaborated. Well-known equations for the design of a cleanable multi-chamber bag-house-filter were modified in order to take into account a continuously regeneration of a dust filter by a nozzle. Thereby, the specific filter medium resistance and the specific cake resistance values are needed which can be derived from filter tests under constant operation conditions. A lab-scale filter test rig was used to derive the specific filter media resistance value and the specific cake resistance value for vacuum cleaned filter operation. Three different filter media were tested and the determined parameters were compared to each other. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20of%20dust%20filter" title="design of dust filter">design of dust filter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dust%20removing" title=" dust removing"> dust removing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=filter%20regeneration" title=" filter regeneration"> filter regeneration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=operation%20parameters" title=" operation parameters"> operation parameters</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2536/operation-parameters-of-vacuum-cleaned-filters" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2536.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">387</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">45</span> Kauffman Model on a Network of Containers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20J.%20Schneider">Johannes J. The Kauffman model proposes the existence of autocatalytic sets of macromolecules which mutually catalyze reactions leading to each other’s formation. Usually, this model is simulated in one well-stirred pot only, with a continuous inflow of small building blocks, from which larger molecules are created by a set of catalyzed ligation and cleavage reactions. This approach represents the picture of the primordial soup. However, the conditions on the early Earth must have differed geographically, leading to spatially different outcomes whether a specific reaction could be performed or not. Guided by this picture, the Kauffman model is simulated in a large number of containers in parallel, with neighboring containers being connected by diffusion. In each container, only a subset of the overall reaction set can be performed. Under specific conditions, this approach leads to a larger probability for the existence of an autocatalytic metabolism than in the original Kauffman model. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agglomeration" title="agglomeration">agglomeration</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autocatalytic%20set" title=" autocatalytic set"> autocatalytic set</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=differential%20equation" title=" differential equation"> differential equation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kauffman%20model" title=" Kauffman model"> Kauffman model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182310/kauffman-model-on-a-network-of-containers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/182310.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">58</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">44</span> Transient Free Laminar Convection in the Vicinity of a Thermal Conductive Vertical Plate</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anna%20Bykalyuk">Anna Bykalyuk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric%20Kuznik"> Frédéric Kuznik</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=K%C3%A9vyn%20Johannes"> Kévyn Johannes</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, the influence of a vertical plate’s thermal capacity is numerically investigated in order to evaluate the evolution of the thermal boundary layer structure, as well as the convective heat transfer coefficient and the velocity and temperature profiles. But in literature, one can´t find any quantitative approach for valuing the usage of a DT or DPF in AM. Out of this fact, such an approach will be developed within this paper in order to further promote or dissuade the usage of these concepts. The focus is set on the production as an early lifecycle phase, which means that the AM-production process gets analyzed regarding the potential advantages of using DPF in AM. These advantages are transferred to a monetary value with this approach. By calculating the costs of the DPF, an overall monetary value is a result. Thereon a tool, based on a simulation environment is constructed, where the algorithms are transformed into a program. The results of applying this tool show that an overall value of 20,81 € for the DPF can be realized for one special use case. For the future application of the DPF there is the recommendation to integrate especially sustainable information because out of this, a higher value of the DPF can be expected. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=additive%20manufacturing" title="additive manufacturing">additive manufacturing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20concept%20costs" title=" digital concept costs"> digital concept costs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20part%20file" title=" digital part file"> digital part file</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20twin" title=" digital twin"> digital twin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monetary%20value%20estimation" title=" monetary value estimation"> monetary value estimation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133143/method-for-evaluating-the-monetary-value-of-a-customized-version-of-the-digital-twin-for-the-additive-manufacturing" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/133143.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">200</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">42</span> Deciphering Chinese Calligraphy as the Architectural Essence of Tao Fong Shan Christian Center in Hong Kong</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chak%20Kwong%20Lau">Chak Kwong Lau</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Many buildings in Hong Kong are graced with enchanting works of Chinese calligraphy. This paper examines the pivotal role played by Chinese calligraphy in creating a significant context for the center to fulfill her visions and missions. The methodology of this research involves stylistic and textual analyses of works of calligraphy, in particular through an examination and interpretation of their extended meanings in terms of architectural symbology and social and cultural contexts. For this study, ana haw is used as the fiber source due to its abundance throughout the Philippines. A problem addressed in this study is the need for an environment-friendly method of fiber treatment. The use of sodium alginate to treat fibers was thus investigated. The fibers were immersed in a sodium alginate solution and then in a calcium chloride solution afterwards. The treated fibers were used to reinforce orthophthalic unsaturated polyester (ortho-UP) resin. The mechanical properties were tested using a universal testing machine (UTM), and the fracture surfaces were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that the sodium alginate treatment had increased the tensile and flexural strength of the composite. The increase in fiber load had also been found to increase the stiffness of the composite. However, sodium alginate treatment did not provide any significant improvement in the wet mechanical properties of the NFRP. The composite is comparable to some commercially available polymeric materials. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NFRP" title="NFRP">NFRP</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=composite" title=" composite"> composite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=alginate" title=" alginate"> alginate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anahaw" title=" anahaw"> anahaw</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polymer" title=" polymer"> polymer</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52227/orthophthalic-polyester-composite-reinforced-with-sodium-alginate-treated-anahaw-saribus-rotundifolius-fibers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/52227.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">337</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">40</span> Optimization Model for Identification of Assembly Alternatives of Large-Scale, Make-to-Order Products</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Henrik%20Prinzhorn">Henrik Prinzhorn</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20Nyhuis"> Peter Nyhuis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Wagner"> Johannes Wagner</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Peter%20Burggr%C3%A4f"> Peter Burggräf</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Torben%20Schmitz"> Torben Schmitz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christina%20Reuter"> Christina Reuter</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Assembling large-scale products, such as airplanes, locomotives, or wind turbines, involves frequent process interruptions induced by e.g. delayed material deliveries or missing availability of resources. This leads to a negative impact on the logistical performance of a producer of xxl-products. In industrial practice, in case of interruptions, the identification, evaluation and eventually the selection of an alternative order of assembly activities (&lsquo;assembly alternative&rsquo;) leads to an enormous challenge, especially if an optimized logistical decision should be reached. Therefore, in this paper, an innovative, optimization model for the identification of assembly alternatives that addresses the given problem is presented. It describes make-to-order, large-scale product assembly processes as a resource constrained project scheduling (RCPS) problem which follows given restrictions in practice. For the evaluation of the assembly alternative, a cost-based definition of the logistical objectives (delivery reliability, inventory, make-span and workload) is presented. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=assembly%20scheduling" title="assembly scheduling">assembly scheduling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=large-scale%20products" title=" large-scale products"> large-scale products</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=make-to-order" title=" make-to-order"> make-to-order</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimization" title=" optimization"> optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rescheduling" title=" rescheduling"> rescheduling</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40012/optimization-model-for-identification-of-assembly-alternatives-of-large-scale-make-to-order-products" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40012.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">459</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">39</span> Parameter Estimation for Contact Tracing in Graph-Based Models</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Augustine%20Okolie">Augustine Okolie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20M%C3%BCller"> Johannes Müller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mirjam%20Kretzchmar"> Mirjam Kretzchmar</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> We adopt a maximum-likelihood framework to estimate parameters of a stochastic susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) model with contact tracing on a rooted random tree. Given the number of detectees per index case, our estimator allows to determine the degree distribution of the random tree as well as the tracing probability. Since we do not discover all infectees via contact tracing, this estimation is non-trivial. To keep things simple and stable, we develop an approximation suited for realistic situations (contract tracing probability small, or the probability for the detection of index cases small). In this approximation, the only epidemiological parameter entering the estimator is the basic reproduction number R0. The estimator is tested in a simulation study and applied to covid-19 contact tracing data from India. The simulation study underlines the efficiency of the method. For the empirical covid-19 data, we are able to compare different degree distributions and perform a sensitivity analysis. We find that particularly a power-law and a negative binomial degree distribution meet the data well and that the tracing probability is rather large. The sensitivity analysis shows no strong dependency on the reproduction number. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stochastic%20SIR%20model%20on%20graph" title="stochastic SIR model on graph">stochastic SIR model on graph</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=contact%20tracing" title=" contact tracing"> contact tracing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=branching%20process" title=" branching process"> branching process</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parameter%20inference" title=" parameter inference"> parameter inference</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/167983/parameter-estimation-for-contact-tracing-in-graph-based-models" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/167983.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">77</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">38</span> Determination of Economic and Ecological Potential of Bio Hydrogen Generated through Dark Photosynthesis Process</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Full">Johannes Full</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Martin%20Reisinger"> Martin Reisinger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexander%20Sauer"> Alexander Sauer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Robert%20Miehe"> Robert Miehe</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The use of biogenic residues for the biotechnological production of chemical energy carriers for electricity and heat generation as well as for mobile applications is an important lever for the shift away from fossil fuels towards a carbon dioxide neutral post-fossil future. A multitude of promising biotechnological processes needs, therefore, to be compared against each other. For this purpose, a multi-objective target system and a corresponding methodology for the evaluation of the underlying key figures are presented in this paper, which can serve as a basis for decisionmaking for companies and promotional policy measures. The methodology considers in this paper the economic and ecological potential of bio-hydrogen production using the example of hydrogen production from fruit and milk production waste with the purple bacterium R. rubrum (so-called dark photosynthesis process) for the first time. The substrate used in this cost-effective and scalable process is fructose from waste material and waste deposits. Based on an estimation of the biomass potential of such fructose residues, the new methodology is used to compare different scenarios for the production and usage of bio-hydrogen through the considered process. In conclusion, this paper presents, at the example of the promising dark photosynthesis process, a methodology to evaluate the ecological and economic potential of biotechnological production of bio-hydrogen from residues and waste. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biofuel" title="biofuel">biofuel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrogen" title=" hydrogen"> hydrogen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=R.%20rubrum" title=" R. rubrum"> R. rubrum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bioenergy" title=" bioenergy"> bioenergy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109934/determination-of-economic-and-ecological-potential-of-bio-hydrogen-generated-through-dark-photosynthesis-process" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109934.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">196</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">37</span> Effect of UV/Ozone Treatment on the Adhesion Strength of Polymeric Systems</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marouen%20Hamdi">Marouen Hamdi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20A.%20Poulis"> Johannes A. The experimental tests consist of contact angle measurements, standardized adhesion tests, and spectroscopic and microscopic observations. Also, commonly-used surface free energy models were applied to characterize the wettability of the materials. Preliminary results show that the treatment enhances the wettability of the examined polymers. Also, it considerably improved the adhesion strength of PVC and ABS and shifted their failure modes from adhesive to cohesive, without a significant effect on EPDM. Spectroscopic characterization showed significant oxidation-induced changes in the chemical structures of treated PVC and ABS surfaces. Also, new morphological changes (microcracks, micro-holes, and wrinkles) were observed on these two materials using the SEM. These chemical and morphological changes on treated PVC and ABS promote more reactivity and mechanical interlocking with the adhesive, which explains the improvement in their adhesion strength. After characterizing the adhesion strength of the systems, accelerated ageing tests in controlled environment chambers will be conducted to determine the effect of temperature, moisture, and UV radiation on the performance of the polymeric bonded joints. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=accelerated%20tests" title="accelerated tests">accelerated tests</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adhesion%20strength" title=" adhesion strength"> adhesion strength</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ageing%20of%20polymers" title=" ageing of polymers"> ageing of polymers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=UV%2Fozone%20treatment" title=" UV/ozone treatment"> UV/ozone treatment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110983/effect-of-uvozone-treatment-on-the-adhesion-strength-of-polymeric-systems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110983.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">148</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">36</span> The Imagined Scientific Drawing as a Representative of the Content Provided by Emotions to Scientific Rationality</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Den%C3%AD%20Stincer%20G%C3%B3mez">Dení Stincer Gómez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zuraya%20Monroy%20Nasr"> Zuraya Monroy Nasr</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> From the epistemology of emotions, one of the topics of current reflection is the function that emotions fulfill in the rational processes involved in scientific activity. So far, three functions have been assigned to them: selective, heuristic, and carriers of content. In this last function, it is argued that emotions, like our perceptual organs, contribute relevant content to reasoning, which is then converted into linguistic statements or graphic representations. In this paper, of a qualitative and philosophical nature, arguments are provided for two hypotheses 1) if emotions provide content to the mind, which then translates it into language or representations, then it is important to take up the idea of the Saussurean linguistic sign to understand this process. This sign has two elements: the signified and the signifier. Emotions would provide meanings, and reasoning creates the signifier, and 2) the meanings provided by emotions are properties and qualities of phenomena generally not accessible to the sense organs. These meanings must be imagined, and the imagination is nurtured by the feeling that "maybe this is the way." One way to access the content provided by emotions can be through imagined scientific drawings. The atomic models created since Thomson, the structure of crystals by René Just, the representations of lunar eclipses by Johannes, fractal geometry, and the structure of DNA, among others, have resulted fundamentally from the imagination. These representations, not provided by the sense organs, seem to come from the emotional involvement of scientists in their desire to understand, explain and discover. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=emotions" title="emotions">emotions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=epistemic%20functions%20of%20emotions" title=" epistemic functions of emotions"> epistemic functions of emotions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=scientific%20drawing" title=" scientific drawing"> scientific drawing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=linguistic%20sign" title=" linguistic sign"> linguistic sign</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162264/the-imagined-scientific-drawing-as-a-representative-of-the-content-provided-by-emotions-to-scientific-rationality" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/162264.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">71</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">35</span> A Framework for Event-Based Monitoring of Business Processes in the Supply Chain Management of Industry 4.0</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Atug">Johannes Atug</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andreas%20Radke"> Andreas Radke</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mitchell%20Tseng"> Mitchell Tseng</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gunther%20Reinhart"> Gunther Reinhart</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In modern supply chains, large numbers of SKU (Stock-Keeping-Unit) need to be timely managed, and any delays in noticing disruptions of items often limit the ability to defer the impact on customer order fulfillment. However, in supply chains of IoT-connected enterprises, the ERP (Enterprise-Resource-Planning), the MES (Manufacturing-Execution-System) and the SCADA (Supervisory-Control-and-Data-Acquisition) systems generate large amounts of data, which generally glean much earlier notice of deviations in the business process steps. That is, analyzing these streams of data with process mining techniques allows the monitoring of the supply chain business processes and thus identification of items that deviate from the standard order fulfillment process. In this paper, a framework to enable event-based SCM (Supply-Chain-Management) processes including an overview of core enabling technologies are presented, which is based on the RAMI (Reference-Architecture-Model for Industrie 4.0) architecture. The application of this framework in the industry is presented, and implications for SCM in industry 4.0 and further research are outlined. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cyber-physical%20production%20systems" title="cyber-physical production systems">cyber-physical production systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=event-based%20monitoring" title=" event-based monitoring"> event-based monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supply%20chain%20management" title=" supply chain management"> supply chain management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RAMI%20%28Reference-Architecture-Model%20for%20Industrie%204.0%29" title=" RAMI (Reference-Architecture-Model for Industrie 4.0)"> RAMI (Reference-Architecture-Model for Industrie 4.0)</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75155/a-framework-for-event-based-monitoring-of-business-processes-in-the-supply-chain-management-of-industry-40" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75155.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">236</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">34</span> Assessment of Ultra-High Cycle Fatigue Behavior of EN-GJL-250 Cast Iron Using Ultrasonic Fatigue Testing Machine</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saeedeh%20Bakhtiari">Saeedeh Bakhtiari</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Depessemier"> Johannes Depessemier</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stijn%20Hertel%C3%A9"> Stijn Hertelé</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Wim%20De%20Waele"> Wim De Waele</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> High cycle fatigue comprising up to 10<sup>7</sup> load cycles has been the subject of many studies, and the behavior of many materials was recorded adequately in this regime. However, many applications involve larger numbers of load cycles during the lifetime of machine components. In this ultra-high cycle regime, other failure mechanisms play, and the concept of a fatigue endurance limit (assumed for materials such as steel) is often an oversimplification of reality. When machine component design demands a high geometrical complexity, cast iron grades become interesting candidate materials. Grey cast iron is known for its low cost, high compressive strength, and good damping properties. However, the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of cast iron is poorly documented. The current work focuses on the ultra-high cycle fatigue behavior of EN-GJL-250 (GG25) grey cast iron by developing an ultrasonic (20 kHz) fatigue testing system. Moreover, the testing machine is instrumented to measure the temperature and the displacement of&nbsp; the specimen, and to control the temperature. The high resonance frequency allowed to assess the&nbsp; behavior of the cast iron of interest within a matter of days for ultra-high numbers of cycles, and repeat the tests to quantify the natural scatter in fatigue resistance. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GG25" title="GG25">GG25</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cast%20iron" title=" cast iron"> cast iron</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultra-high%20cycle%20fatigue" title=" ultra-high cycle fatigue"> ultra-high cycle fatigue</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultrasonic%20test" title=" ultrasonic test"> ultrasonic test</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110405/assessment-of-ultra-high-cycle-fatigue-behavior-of-en-gjl-250-cast-iron-using-ultrasonic-fatigue-testing-machine" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110405.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">176</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">33</span> Discovering New Organic Materials through Computational Methods</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lucas%20Viani">Lucas Viani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Benedetta%20%20Mennucci"> Benedetta Mennucci</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Soo%20Young%20%20Park"> Soo Young Park</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20%20Gierschner"> Johannes Gierschner</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Organic semiconductors have attracted the attention of the scientific community in the past decades due to their unique physicochemical properties, allowing new designs and alternative device fabrication methods. Until today, organic electronic devices are largely based on conjugated polymers mainly due to their easy processability. In the recent years, due to moderate ET and CT efficiencies and the ill-defined nature of polymeric systems the focus has been shifting to small conjugated molecules with well-defined chemical structure, easier control of intermolecular packing, and enhanced CT and ET properties. It has led to the synthesis of new small molecules, followed by the growth of their crystalline structure and ultimately by the device preparation. This workflow is commonly followed without a clear knowledge of the ET and CT properties related mainly to the macroscopic systems, which may lead to financial and time losses, since not all materials will deliver the properties and efficiencies demanded by the current standards. In this work, we present a theoretical workflow designed to predict the key properties of ET of these new materials prior synthesis, thus speeding up the discovery of new promising materials. It is based on quantum mechanical, hybrid, and classical methodologies, starting from a single molecule structure, finishing with the prediction of its packing structure, and prediction of properties of interest such as static and averaged excitonic couplings, and exciton diffusion length. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=organic%20semiconductor" title="organic semiconductor">organic semiconductor</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=organic%20crystals" title=" organic crystals"> organic crystals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy%20transport" title=" energy transport"> energy transport</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=excitonic%20couplings" title=" excitonic couplings"> excitonic couplings</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51191/discovering-new-organic-materials-through-computational-methods" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51191.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">253</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">32</span> Mobile Assembly of Electric Vehicles: Decentralized, Low-Invest and Flexible </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Achim%20Kampker">Achim Kampker</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kai%20Kreiskoether"> Kai Kreiskoether</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Wagner"> Johannes Wagner</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sarah%20Fluchs"> Sarah Fluchs</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The growing speed of innovation in related industries requires the automotive industry to adapt and increase release frequencies of new vehicle derivatives which implies a significant reduction of investments per vehicle and ramp-up times. Emerging markets in various parts of the world augment the currently dominating established main automotive markets. Local content requirements such as import tariffs on final products impede the accessibility of these micro markets, which is why in the future market exploitation will not be driven by pure sales activities anymore but rather by setting up local assembly units. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the concept of decentralized assembly and to discuss and critically assess some currently researched and crucial approaches in production technology. In order to determine the scope in which complementary mobile assembly can be profitable for manufacturers, a general cost model is set up and each cost driver is assessed with respect to varying levels of decentralization. One main result of the paper is that the presented approaches offer huge cost-saving potentials and are thus critical for future production strategies. Nevertheless, they still need to be further exploited in order for decentralized assembly to be profitable for companies. The optimal level of decentralization must, however, be specifically determined in each case and cannot be defined in general. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=automotive%20assembly" title="automotive assembly">automotive assembly</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-mobility" title=" e-mobility"> e-mobility</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=production%20technology" title=" production technology"> production technology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=release%20capability" title=" release capability"> release capability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=small%20series%20assembly" title=" small series assembly"> small series assembly</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56019/mobile-assembly-of-electric-vehicles-decentralized-low-invest-and-flexible" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56019.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">201</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">31</span> Somatic Embryogenesis of Lachenalia viridiflora, a Critically Endangered Ornamental Geophyte with High Floricultural Potential</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vijay%20Kumar">Vijay Kumar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mack%20Moyo"> Mack Moyo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Van%20Staden"> Johannes Van Staden</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Lachenalia viridiflora is a critically endangered bulbous plant with high potential on the international floriculture market. A high number of SEs (28.5 ± 1.49) with at different developmental stages of somatic embryos (SEs: globular embryos, torpedo and cotyledon embryo with bipolar characteristics) was obtained on Murashige and Skoog (MS) (Murashige and Skoog 1962) medium with 2.5 μM picloram, and 1.0 μM TDZ. Histological and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis confirmed the presence of somatic embryos. Mature somatic embryos germinated and developed into plantlets after 6 weeks on half/full strength MS medium. High plant regeneration frequency (91.11 %) was achieved on full-strength MS medium supplemented with 5 μM phloroglucinol (PG). Well-developed healthy plantlets were successfully acclimatized in the greenhouse with a survival rate of 80%. The result of this study is beneficial in the mass propagation of high-quality Lachenalia viridiflora clonal plants for the commercial horticultural market and also provides a platform for future genetic transformation studies on the plant. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=horticultural%20plant" title="horticultural plant">horticultural plant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lachenalia%20viridiflora" title=" Lachenalia viridiflora"> Lachenalia viridiflora</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phloroglucinol" title=" phloroglucinol"> phloroglucinol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=somatic%20embryogenesis" title=" somatic embryogenesis"> somatic embryogenesis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thidiazuron" title=" thidiazuron"> thidiazuron</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/53535/somatic-embryogenesis-of-lachenalia-viridiflora-a-critically-endangered-ornamental-geophyte-with-high-floricultural-potential" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/53535.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">628</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">30</span> Enhancing Fracture Toughness of CF/PAEK Laminates for High-Velocity Impact Applications: An Experimental Investigation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Keil">Johannes Keil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eric%20Mischorr"> Eric Mischorr</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Veit%20W%C3%BCrfel"> Veit Würfel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jan%20Cond%C3%A9-Wolter"> Jan Condé-Wolter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexander%20Liebsch"> Alexander Liebsch</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maik%20Gude"> Maik Gude</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the aviation sector wastewater pipes are subjected to many different mechanical and medial loads. Worst-case scenarios include high-velocity impacts resulting from the introduction of foreign objects into the system. The industry is seeking to reduce the weight of these pipes, which are currently manufactured from titanium. A promising alternative is the use of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP), specifically carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyaryletherketone (PAEK) laminates. This study employs an experimental methodology to investigate the impact resistance of CF/PAEK laminates, with a particular focus on three configurations: crimp, non-crimp, and interleaved matrix rich films in cross-ply laminates. High-velocity impacts were performed using a gas gun resulting in three-dimensional damage patterns. Afterwards the damage behavior was qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed using ultrasonic scans and computed tomography (CT). Samples with an interleaved matrix-rich film led to a reduction of the damage area by around 40% compared to the non-interleaved, non-crimp samples, while the crimp architecture resulted in a reduction of more than 60%. Therefore, these findings contribute to understanding the influence of laminate architecture on impact resistance, paving the way for more efficient materials in aviation applications. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fracture%20toughness" title="fracture toughness">fracture toughness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high-velocity-impact" title=" high-velocity-impact"> high-velocity-impact</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=textile%20architecture" title=" textile architecture"> textile architecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermoplastic%20composites" title=" thermoplastic composites"> thermoplastic composites</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/192076/enhancing-fracture-toughness-of-cfpaek-laminates-for-high-velocity-impact-applications-an-experimental-investigation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/192076.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">19</span> </span> </div> </div> <ul class="pagination"> <li class="page-item disabled"><span class="page-link">&lsaquo;</span></li> <li class="page-item active"><span class="page-link">1</span></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Henrich%20Schleifenbaum&amp;page=2">2</a></li> <li class="page-item"><a class="page-link" href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Johannes%20Henrich%20Schleifenbaum&amp;page=2" rel="next">&rsaquo;</a></li> </ul> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">&copy;
