The surface modification of NTNs is important for the attachment of bioactive molecules and the corresponding specific response. NTNs were formed by anodizing Al/Nb(Ta) bilayers in oxalic acid solution until the aluminum layer was completely oxidized, followed by reanodizing in borate solution. After dissolving the anodic alumina, the NTNs were treated with (3-chloropropyl)trichlorosilane to introduce surface chloropropyl groups, which then underwent nucleophilic azide substitution resulting in clickable functionalization. The azide groups were converted to dimethoxytrityl groups via a click reaction. The loading of surface functional groups was photometrically measured using the coloured dimethoxytrityl cation.
