Enterprises","grobid_abstract":"The role of language in education was clearly indicated in 1958 when UNESCO declared that 'it is axiomatic that the best medium for teaching a child is his mother tongue'. However, African languages have suffered the indignity of playing second fiddle to European Languages in African classrooms. This paper discusses this issue in the context of South Africa, where a new language policy has been introduced, which constitutionally recognises eleven official languages. Language educationists are particularly involved in this controversy about language use in classrooms. The issue at stake is the status of the eleven languages in education. The constitution has provided a non-diminutive clause specifying that no language should be diminished, but equal language status should be achieved by upgrading African languages. But how will this clause be implemented in education where the established and recognized medium of education is English and Afrikaans? The position of this paper is that concerted efforts have to be made to show learners that African languages have an important role to play in their education. The researchers therefore advocate that 'code-mixing' and 'code-switching' which have hitherto been frowned upon by language purists should be actively encouraged in South African classrooms as an aid African languages policy in education debates in post-apartheid South Africa, and provides a policy review of language in education in the past 20 years of liberation in the South Africa. The research problem is that the post-1994 governments of South Africa stated in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (1996) that indigenous official African languages must be in the curricula of the education system. But the findings reflect that this constitutional mandate has not been accomplished in the twenty years of South Africa's liberation. Conclusions drawn are that the former two official languages used in the education policies of the apartheid South Africa, i.e. English and Afrikaans, have continued to be used in pretended implementation of indigenous official African languages in the curricula of education of a free South Africa. In this article it is argued that the use of foreign languages as the only languages of teaching and learning in KwaZulu-Natal schools impedes access to the curriculum by African learners who are neither English nor Afrikaans. The article challenges the mission of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education in that the Department cannot champion transformation successfully if African languages are left behind as languages of teaching and learning. The article poses recommendations as to how the apparent linguistic imperialism, which is a human rights violation, can be turned around to linguistic diversity that is based on linguistic
