And David<MH1732> set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the wilderness<MH4057b> of Paran<MH6290>. <p class="hdg">Nabal and Abigail</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Now <i>there was</i> a man<MH376> in Maon<MH4584> whose business<MH4639> was in Carmel<MH3760>; and the man<MH376> was very<MH3966> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>rich<MH1419>, and he had three<MH7969> thousand<MH505> sheep<MH6629> and a thousand<MH505> goats<MH5795>. And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> while he was shearing<MH1494> his sheep<MH6629> in Carmel<MH3760> <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>(now the man’s<MH376> name<MH8034> was Nabal<MH5037>, and his wife’s<MH802> name<MH8034> was Abigail<MH26>. And the woman<MH802> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>intelligent<MH2896a, 7922> and beautiful<MH3303> in appearance<MH8389>, but the man<MH376> was harsh<MH7186> and evil<MH7451b> in <i>his</i> dealings<MH4611>, and he was a Calebite<MH3614>), <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>that David<MH1732> heard<MH8085> in the wilderness<MH4057b> that Nabal<MH5037> was shearing<MH1494> his sheep<MH6629>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> sent<MH7971> ten<MH6235> young<MH5288> men<MH5288>; and David<MH1732> said<MH559> to the young<MH5288> men<MH5288>, “Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to Carmel<MH3760> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>visit<MH935, 413> Nabal<MH5037>, and greet<MH7592, 7965> him in my name<MH8034>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>and this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you shall say<MH559>: ‘<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Have a long life<MH2416a>, peace<MH7965> to you, and peace<MH7965> to your house<MH1004>, and peace<MH7965> to all<MH3605> that you have! <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, I have heard<MH8085> that you have shearers<MH1494>. Now<MH6258>, your shepherds<MH7462a> have been<MH1961> with us; we have not harmed<MH3637> them, nor<MH3808> has anything<MH3972> of theirs gone<MH6485> missing<MH6485> all<MH3605> the days<MH3117> they were in Carmel<MH3760>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Ask<MH7592> your young<MH5288> men<MH5288> and they will tell<MH5046> you. Therefore let <i>my</i> young<MH5288> men<MH5288> find<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in your eyes<MH5869>, for we have come<MH935> on a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>festive<MH2896a> day<MH3117>. Please<MH4994> give<MH5414> whatever<MH834> you find<MH4672> at hand<MH3027> to your servants<MH5650> and to your son<MH1121> David<MH1732>.’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>When David’s<MH1732> young<MH5288> men<MH5288> came<MH935>, they spoke<MH1696> to Nabal<MH5037> in accordance with all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697> in David’s<MH1732> name<MH8034>; then they waited<MH5117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But Nabal<MH5037> answered<MH6030a> David’s<MH1732> servants<MH5650> and said<MH559>, “Who<MH4310> is David<MH1732>? And who<MH4310> is the son<MH1121> of Jesse<MH3448>? There are<MH7231> many<MH7231> servants<MH5650> today<MH3117> who are each<MH376> breaking<MH6555> away<MH6555> from his master<MH113>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Shall I then take<MH3947> my bread<MH3899> and my water<MH4325> and my meat<MH2878> that I have slaughtered<MH2873> for my shearers<MH1494>, and give<MH5414> it to men<MH376> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>whose<MH834> origin<MH4480, 2088, 335> I do not know<MH3045>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So David’s<MH1732> young<MH5288> men<MH5288> made<MH2015> their way<MH1870> back<MH2015> and returned<MH7725>; and they came<MH935> and informed<MH5046> him in accordance with all<MH3605> these<MH428> words<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to his men<MH376>, “Each<MH376> <i>of you</i> strap<MH2296> on<MH2296> his sword<MH2719>.” So each<MH376> man<MH376> strapped<MH2296> on<MH2296> his sword<MH2719>. And David<MH1732> also<MH1571> strapped<MH2296> on<MH2296> his sword<MH2719>, and about four<MH702> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> behind<MH310> David<MH1732>, while two hundred<MH3967> stayed<MH3427> with the baggage<MH3627>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Now one<MH259> of the young<MH5288> men<MH5288> told<MH5046> Abigail<MH26>, Nabal’s<MH5037> wife<MH802>, saying<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, David<MH1732> sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> from the wilderness<MH4057b> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>greet<MH1288> our master<MH113>, and he spoke<MH5860a> to them in<MH5860a> anger<MH5860a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Yet the men<MH376> were very<MH3966> good<MH2896a> to us, and we were not harmed<MH3637>, nor<MH3808> did anything<MH3972> go<MH6485> missing<MH6485> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>as<MH3605, 3117> long<MH3605, 3117> as we went<MH1980> with them, while we were in the fields<MH7704>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>They were a wall<MH2346> to us both<MH1571> by night<MH3915> and by day<MH3119>, all<MH3605> the time<MH3117> we were with them tending<MH7462a> the sheep<MH6629>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, be<MH3045> aware<MH3045> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>consider<MH7200> what<MH4100> you should do<MH6213a>, because<MH3588> harm<MH7463a> is plotted<MH3615> against<MH413> our master<MH113> and against<MH5921> all<MH3605> his household<MH1004>; and he is such<MH4480> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>worthless<MH1100> man<MH1121> that<MH4480> no<MH4480> one can speak<MH1696> to him.” <p class="hdg">Abigail Intercedes</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then Abigail<MH26> hurried<MH4116> and took<MH3947> two hundred<MH3967> <i>loaves</i> of bread<MH3899> and two<MH8147> jugs<MH5035a> of wine<MH3196>, and five<MH2568> sheep<MH6629> <i>already</i> prepared<MH6213a> and five<MH2568> measures<MH5429> of roasted<MH7039> grain<MH7039>, and a hundred<MH3967> cakes<MH6778> of<MH6778> raisins<MH6778> and two hundred<MH3967> cakes<MH1690> of<MH1690> figs<MH1690>, and she loaded<MH7760> <i>them</i> on donkeys<MH2543>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Then she said<MH559> to her young<MH5288> men<MH5288>, “Go<MH5674a> on<MH5674a> ahead<MH6440> of me; behold<MH2009>, I am coming<MH935> after<MH310> you.” But she did not tell<MH5046> her husband<MH376> Nabal<MH5037>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And it happened<MH1961> as she was riding<MH7392> on her donkey<MH2543> and coming<MH3381> down<MH3381> by the hidden<MH5643a> part<MH5643a> of the mountain<MH2022>, that behold<MH2009>, David<MH1732> and his men<MH376> were coming<MH3381> down<MH3381> toward<MH7122> her; so she met<MH6298> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now David<MH1732> had said<MH559>, “It is certainly<MH389> for nothing<MH8267> that I have guarded<MH8104> everything<MH3605> that this<MH2088> <i>man</i> has in the wilderness<MH4057b>, so that nothing<MH3808, 3972> has gone<MH6485> missing<MH6485> of all<MH3605> that belonged to him! For he has returned<MH7725> me evil<MH7463a> for good<MH2899b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>May God<MH430> do<MH6213a> so<MH3541> to the enemies<MH340> of David<MH1732>, and more<MH3254> so<MH3541>, if<MH518> by morning<MH1242> I leave<MH7604> alive<MH7604> <i>as much as</i> one <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>male<MH8366, 7023> of any<MH3605> who<MH834> belong to him.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>When Abigail<MH26> saw<MH7200> David<MH1732>, she hurried<MH4116> and dismounted<MH3381> from her donkey<MH2543>, and fell<MH5307> on her face<MH6440> in front<MH639> of David<MH1732> and bowed<MH2331c> herself to the ground<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>She fell<MH5307> at his feet<MH7272> and said<MH559>, “On me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>alone<MH589>, my lord<MH113>, be the blame<MH5771>. And please<MH4994> let your slave<MH519> speak<MH1696> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>to you, and listen<MH8085> to the words<MH1697> of your slave<MH519>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Please<MH4994> do not let my lord<MH113> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>pay<MH7760> attention<MH3820> to this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>worthless<MH1100> man<MH376>, Nabal<MH5037>, for as his name<MH8034> is, so<MH3651> is he. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>Nabal<MH5037> is his name<MH8034>, and stupidity<MH5039> is with him; but I your slave<MH519> did not see<MH7200> the young<MH5288> men<MH5288> of my lord<MH113> whom<MH834> you sent<MH7971>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>“Now<MH6258> then, my lord<MH113>, as the LORD<MH3068> lives<MH2416a>, and as your soul<MH5315> lives<MH2416a>, since<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> has restrained<MH4513> you from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>shedding<MH935> blood<MH1818>, and from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>avenging<MH3467> yourself by your own hand<MH3027>, now<MH6258> then, may your enemies<MH340> and those who seek<MH1245> evil<MH7463a> against<MH413> my lord<MH113>, be like Nabal<MH5037>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And now<MH6258> let this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>gift<MH1293> which<MH834> your servant<MH8198> has brought<MH935> to my lord<MH113> be given<MH5414> to the young<MH5288> men<MH5288> who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>accompany<MH1980, 7272> my lord<MH113>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Please<MH4994> forgive<MH5375> the offense<MH6588> of your slave<MH519>; for the LORD<MH3068> will certainly<MH6213a> make<MH6213a> for my lord<MH113> an <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>enduring<MH539> house<MH1004>, because<MH3588> my lord<MH113> is fighting<MH3898a> the battles<MH4421> of the LORD<MH3068>, and evil<MH7463a> will not be found<MH4672> in you all<MH4480> your days<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Should anyone<MH120> rise<MH6965> up<MH6965> to pursue<MH7291> you and to seek<MH1245> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>life<MH5315>, then the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>life<MH5315> of my lord<MH113> shall be bound<MH6887a> in the bundle<MH6872a> of the living<MH2416a> with the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>; but the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>lives<MH5315> of your enemies<MH340> He will sling<MH7049a> out<MH7049a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>as from the hollow<MH3709> of a sling<MH7050a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And when<MH3588> the LORD<MH3068> does<MH6213a> for my lord<MH3068> in accordance with all<MH3605> the good<MH2899b> that He has spoken<MH1696> concerning<MH5921> you, and appoints<MH6680> you ruler<MH5057> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>this<MH2088> will not become an obstacle<MH6330> to you, or a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[z]</a></span>troubled<MH4383> heart<MH3820> to my lord<MH113>, both by having shed<MH8210> blood<MH1818> without<MH2600> cause<MH2600> and by my lord’s<MH113> having <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[aa]</a></span>avenged<MH3467> himself. When the LORD<MH3068> deals<MH3190> well<MH3190> with my lord<MH113>, then remember<MH2142> your slave<MH519>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> said<MH559> to Abigail<MH26>, “Blessed<MH1288> be the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, who<MH834> sent<MH7971> you this<MH2088> day<MH3117> to meet<MH7122> me, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>and blessed<MH1288> be your discernment<MH2940>, and blessed<MH1288> be you, who<MH834> have kept<MH3607> me this<MH2088> day<MH3117> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ab]</a></span>bloodshed<MH935, 1818> and from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ac]</a></span>avenging<MH3467> myself by my own hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Nevertheless<MH199>, as the LORD<MH3068> God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> lives<MH2416a>, who<MH834> has restrained<MH4513> me from harming<MH7489a> you, if<MH3588, 3884a> you had not come<MH935> quickly<MH4116> to meet<MH7122> me, there certainly<MH3588, 518> would not have been left<MH3498> to Nabal<MH5037> until<MH5704> the morning<MH1242> light<MH216> <i>as much as</i> one <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ad]</a></span>male<MH8366, 7023>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>So David<MH1732> accepted<MH3947> from her hand<MH3027> what<MH834> she had brought<MH935> him, and said<MH559> to her, “Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to your house<MH1004> in peace<MH7965>. See<MH7200>, I have listened<MH8085> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ae]</a></span>you and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[af]</a></span>granted<MH5375> your request<MH6440>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Then Abigail<MH26> came<MH935> to Nabal<MH5037>, and behold<MH2009>, he was having a feast<MH4960> in his house<MH1004>, like the feast<MH4960> of a king<MH4428>. And Nabal’s<MH5037> heart<MH3820> was cheerful<MH2895> within<MH5921> him, for he was very<MH5704, 3966> drunk<MH7910>; so she did not tell<MH5046> him anything<MH1697> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ag]</a></span>at all<MH6996b, 1419> until<MH5704> the morning<MH1242> light<MH216>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>But in the morning<MH1242>, when the wine<MH3196> had gone<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Nabal<MH5037>, his wife<MH802> told<MH5046> him these<MH428> things<MH1697>, and his heart<MH3820> died<MH4191> within<MH7130> him so that he became<MH1961> <i>like</i> a stone<MH68>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>About ten<MH6235> days<MH3117> later, the LORD<MH3068> struck<MH5062> Nabal<MH5037> and he died<MH4191>. <p class="hdg">David Marries Abigail</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>When David<MH1732> heard<MH8085> that Nabal<MH5037> was dead<MH4191>, he said<MH559>, “Blessed<MH1288> be the LORD<MH3068>, who<MH834> has pleaded<MH7378> the cause<MH7379> of the shame<MH2781> inflicted<MH2781> on me by the hand<MH3027> of Nabal<MH5037>, and has kept<MH2820> back<MH2820> His servant<MH5650> from evil<MH7463a>. The LORD<MH3068> has also returned<MH7725> the evildoing<MH7463a> of Nabal<MH5037> on his own head<MH7218>.” Then David<MH1732> sent<MH7971> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ah]</a></span>a proposal<MH1696> to Abigail<MH26>, to take<MH3947> her as his wife<MH802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>When the servants<MH5650> of David<MH1732> came<MH935> to Abigail<MH26> at Carmel<MH3760>, they spoke<MH1696> to her, saying<MH559>, “David<MH1732> has sent<MH7971> us to you to take<MH3947> you to him as <i>his</i> wife<MH802>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>And she got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and bowed<MH2331c> with her face<MH639> to the ground<MH776>, and said<MH559>, “Behold<MH2009>, your slave<MH519> is a servant<MH8198> to wash<MH7364> the feet<MH7272> of my lord’s<MH113> servants<MH5650>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/25-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>Then Abigail<MH26> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> quickly<MH4116>, and rode<MH7392> on a donkey<MH2543>, with her five<MH2568> female<MH5291> attendants<MH5291> who <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[ai]</a></span>accompanied<MH1980, 7272> her;
