Now<MH6258> appoint<MH7760> us a king<MH4428> to judge<MH8199> us like all<MH3605> the nations<MH1471>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But the matter<MH1697> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>displeasing<MH7489a> in the sight<MH5869> of Samuel<MH8050> when<MH3512c> they said<MH559>, “Give<MH5414> us a king<MH4428> to judge<MH8199> us.” And Samuel<MH8050> prayed<MH6419> to the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Samuel<MH8050>, “Listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of the people<MH5971a> regarding all<MH3605> that they say<MH559> to you, because<MH3588> they have not rejected<MH3988a> you, but they have rejected<MH3988a> Me from being<MH4427a> King<MH4427a> over<MH5921> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Like all<MH3605> the deeds<MH4639> which<MH834> they have done<MH6213a> since<MH4480> the day<MH3117> that I brought<MH5927> them up<MH5927> from Egypt<MH4714> even to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>—in that they have abandoned<MH5800a> Me and served<MH5647> other<MH312> gods<MH430>—so<MH3651> they are doing<MH6213a> to you as<MH1571> well<MH1571>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now<MH6258> then, listen<MH8085> to their voice<MH6963>; however<MH389, 3588>, you shall warn<MH5749b> them strongly<MH5749b> and tell<MH5046> them of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>practice<MH4941> of the king<MH4428> who<MH834> will reign<MH4427a> over<MH5921> them.” <p class="hdg">Warning concerning a King</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So Samuel<MH8050> spoke<MH559> all<MH3605> the words<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> to the people<MH5971a> who had asked<MH7592> him for a king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “This<MH2088> will be the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>practice<MH4941> of the king<MH4428> who<MH834> will reign<MH4427a> over<MH5921> you: he will take<MH3947> your sons<MH1121> and put<MH7760> <i>them</i> in his chariots<MH4818> for himself and among his horsemen<MH6571b>, and they will run<MH7323> before<MH6440> his chariots<MH4818>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>He will appoint<MH7760> for himself commanders<MH8269> of thousands<MH505> and commanders<MH8269> of fifties<MH2572>, and <i>some</i> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>do<MH2790a> his plowing<MH2758> and to gather<MH7114b> in<MH7114b> his harvest<MH7105a>, and to make<MH6213a> his weapons<MH3627> of war<MH4421> and equipment<MH3627> for his chariots<MH7393>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>He will also take<MH3947> your daughters<MH1323> <i>and use them</i> as perfumers<MH7548>, cooks<MH2879>, and bakers<MH644>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>He will take<MH3947> the best<MH2896a> of your fields<MH7704>, your vineyards<MH3754>, and your olive<MH2132> groves<MH2132>, and give<MH5414> <i>them</i> to his servants<MH5650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And he will take<MH6237> a<MH6237> tenth<MH6237> of your seed<MH2233> and your vineyards<MH3754> and give<MH5414> <i>it</i> to his high<MH5631> officials<MH5631> and his servants<MH5650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>He will also take<MH3947> your male<MH5650> servants<MH5650> and your female<MH8198> servants<MH8198>, and your best<MH2896a> young<MH970> men<MH970>, and your donkeys<MH2543>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>use<MH6213a> <i>them</i> for his work<MH4399>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>He will take<MH6237> a<MH6237> tenth<MH6237> of your flocks<MH6629>, and you yourselves<MH864b> will become<MH1961> his servants<MH5650>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then you will cry<MH2199> out<MH2199> on that day<MH3117> because<MH4480, 6440> of your king<MH4428> whom<MH834> you have chosen<MH977> for yourselves, but the LORD<MH3068> will not answer<MH6030a> you on that day<MH3117>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Yet the people<MH5971a> refused<MH3985> to listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of Samuel<MH8050>, and they said<MH559>, “No<MH3808>, but there shall be a king<MH4428> over<MH5921> us, <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>so that we also<MH1571> may be like all<MH3605> the nations<MH1471>, and our king<MH4428> may judge<MH8199> us and go<MH3318> out<MH3318> before<MH6440> us and fight<MH3898a> our battles<MH4421>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Now after Samuel<MH8050> had heard<MH8085> all<MH3605> the words<MH1697> of the people<MH5971a>, he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>repeated<MH1696> them in the LORD’S<MH3068> hearing<MH241>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_samuel/8-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Samuel<MH8050>, “Listen<MH8085> to their voice<MH6963> and appoint<MH4427a> a king<MH4428> for them.” So Samuel<MH8050> said<MH559> to the men<MH376> of Israel<MH3478>, “Go<MH1980>, every<MH376> man<MH376> to his city<MH5892b>.”<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">6</span> Or <i>evil</i><br><span class="footnotesbot">[b]</span> <span class="fnverse">9</span> Lit <i>custom</i><br><span class="footnotesbot">[c]</span> <span class="fnverse">11</span> Lit <i>custom</i><br><span class="footnotesbot">[d]</span> <span class="fnverse">12</span> Lit <i>plow his plowing</i><br><span class="footnotesbot">[e]</span> <span class="fnverse">16</span> Lit <i>make</i><br><span class="footnotesbot">[f]</span> <span class="fnverse">21</span> Lit <i>spoke</i><br></div><br /><div id="botbox"><div class="padbot"><div align="center">New American Standard Bible<br>Copyright © 1960, 1971, 1977, 1995, 2020<br>by The Lockman Foundation, La Habra, Calif.
