The distance he had for takeoff didn't allow him to get up enough speed. His back wheel hit the top of the van while his front wheel hit the top of the landing ramp. Knievel also placed phone calls to Sarno claiming to be from [[American Broadcasting Company|ABC-TV]] and ''[[Sports Illustrated]]'' inquiring about the jump. Sarno finally agreed to meet Knievel and the deal was set for Knievel to jump the fountains on [[December 31]], [[1967]].
