Seth Berkley (Brown University and former GAVI CEO) and Abebe Genetu Bayih (Africa CDC) emphasized the critical importance of strengthening research and development (R&D), particularly in pre-clinical stages and PhD education, while also highlighting the need for capacity development . Quality assurance emerged as a central theme, with a strong emphasis on ensuring that locally produced vaccines meet international standards of safety and efficacy to build public confidence. The discussion also addressed vaccine hesitancy and access issues, stressing the importance of transparency, effective communication, and equitable distribution. Despite these challenges, there was a sense of optimism about Africa's potential to become a significant contributor to global vaccine production, underscored by successful examples of vaccine manufacturing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speakers Veronica Denti (GAVI)  and Wesley Ronoh (Africa CDC) emphasized the importance of tailoring vaccine distribution and uptake strategies to each country's unique context, including local vaccine hesitancy, regulatory clearance, and supply security. Speakers Dr. Aku Kwamie and Alex Juma Ismail emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, including capacity development, alignment of stakeholders' interests, and consideration of local perspectives. The discussion underscored the significance of preparing for future pandemics by increasing local vaccine production and maintaining high acceptance rates.
