From the jumper pit at the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse to a lifetime of love and partnership — this year, Way and Grimshaw will celebrate two years of marriage and nine years together.</p> <p>While Way, a Windsor local, was right at home, Grimshaw’s path to the University of Windsor was a homecoming of sorts. Originally from Nova Scotia, she chose Windsor for its track reputation, reconnecting with the Ontario roots of her parents. Little did she know it would also be where she found her teammate for life.</p> <p>“Being in the same friend group and sport, we naturally supported each other — whether it was cheering at meets or warming up together before every practice,” she says.</p> <p>The two didn’t start dating right away. It wasn’t until the summer after their second year that they began to wonder if they were more than just teammates. To test the theory, they took a trip to Grimshaw’s home province.</p> <p>“We spent some time travelling around the east coast that summer — it was a special moment in our story and is now the place we both call home,” says Grimshaw.</p> <p>During the trip, the couple discovered that they had unknowingly crossed paths years earlier at the 2012 Charlottetown Legion Track Meet.</p> <p>“It’s as if Windsor was always meant to bring us back together,” she says. “Fate, one might say.”</p> <p>What seemed like a classic coming-of-age love story was no surprise to their Lancer track teammates, who had always recognized their bond.</p> <p>“They all saw it coming before we did,” Way says. “There’s a tradition on the track team, where fun awards get handed out to all the seniors before we graduate, known as the Paper Plate Awards — and we won ‘Worst Kept Secret’.”</p> <p>Looking back on their love story, the couple reminisces about their journey: striving for new heights in competition, celebrating post-meet victories at Rock Bottom, a local bar near campus, and competing together in their final year at the Ontario University Athletics championship meet.</p> <p>“If we could relive one UWindsor moment, it would be OUAs in 2018,” Grimshaw recalls.</p> <p>For her, the moment was even more impactful, as qualifying for the Ontario championships had been a major goal.</p> <p>“Trevor drove me to Toronto for two extra meets just so I could have another shot at making the standard in my final year,” she says. “Competing together at OUAs as teammates was so special, and with Windsor as the host, it made the experience even more meaningful.”</p> <p>Later that year, before graduating, Way achieved a personal best of 2.06m at Saginaw Valley, earning a USports qualifying spot — fittingly also hosted in Windsor that year, where Grimshaw cheered him on.</p> <p>“We learned to be great teammates first, and that has carried over into every stage of life —always cheering each other on. Unless we are playing board games… then we are mortal enemies,” she laughs.</p> <p>The couple adds, "Special shoutout to Guff (former jumps coach Dave McGuffin) and our teammates. Guff was always so supportive, on and off the track.”</p> <p>Grimshaw is now living her dream as a physiotherapist in Nova Scotia, where she owns her own practice, Radius Physiotherapy. Way works as a client executive at insurance brokerage BFL Canada and stays connected to the track world, coaching for Pace Athletics in Halifax.</p> <p>Once again, the University of Windsor is set to host two of the biggest track and field events in Canada. That which we call Rose City by any other name would still be Windsor.</p> <p>While Shakespeare’s Juliet argues that names are irrelevant, the intention behind Windsor’s moniker was quite the opposite.</p> <p>In the early 1960s, Windsor had what Leddy Library archivist Sarah Glassford described as an image issue. The city’s economy had risen and fallen alongside the auto industry, and the memory of past labour disputes remained. Those outside the city viewed Windsor as a “gritty, blue-collar town” and a tough place for business to thrive.</p> <p>“People from here didn't think that was a very accurate representation of what Windsor was really like, and they wanted to change its reputation,” Glassford explains.</p> <p>A group of civic leaders — businessmen, politicians, and educators — formed the Greater Windsor Foundation and crafted a “rebrand” inspired by the city's rose-friendly climate and conditions. The group encouraged rose planting at Jackson Park and City Hall and launched marketing campaigns in a bid to help Windsor bloom into the “Rose City.”</p> <p>Chair of the foundation’s Rose Committee, Doug Johnstone, decided to take the campaign a step further. As the sales promotion manager at the Windsor headquarters of Beauty Counselors of Canada — a direct-sales cosmetics company similar to Avon or Mary Kay — he integrated the campaign into the business, launching a Windsor Rose product line, with the rose becoming a theme for many company activities.</p> <p>“There was Windsor Rose lipstick, Windsor Rose blush, and Windsor Rose teacups and all sorts of things,” says Glassford. “They brought the winner of the Miss Canada pageant to Windsor to do some publicity around this when they had a convention here and just sort of tied it into their business.”</p> <p>She notes that it was the women sales representatives and customers who played a large role in helping the campaign take root.</p> <p>“They would go door to door, selling this idea of Windsor and roses to women in their homes, through cosmetics sales — with the result that women ended up sort of wearing this branding on their bodies,” Glassford says.</p> <p>Johnstone donated materials about the campaign to the Leddy Library Archives and Special Collections — old photographs, ticket stubs, sales brochures, and internal company newsletters promoting the Windsor Rose product line — along with news clippings that had originally been part of a scrapbook.</p> <p>“The newsletters are interesting because they offer insight into both the rebranding effort and the role of women in the campaign, showing how the sales representatives were encouraged to promote this product line.</p> <p>“The collection foregrounds the rebranding campaign for Windsor, but at the same time, it also contains a lot of information about women’s employment opportunities and beauty culture at the time,” notes Glassford.</p> <p>Though traces of the rose campaign have been left behind in the archives, its connection to the city’s identity has faded over time.</p> <p>Glassford points out that part of the reason Rose City may not have an obvious tie to present-day Windsor — a city better known for its automotive ties than its rose beds — may be a 2009 pesticide ban that led to a substantial reduction of the flower in parks around the city.</p> <p>More than 60 years later, the city may no longer be defined by its roses, but the “Rose City” nickname has endured.</p> </div></div></div></article> <article class="node-2622560 node node-article clearfix another" about="/dailynews/2025-02-13/prof-suggests-picks-valentine-flicks" typeof="sioc:Item foaf:Document"> <div class="article-header"> <img class="feature-image" typeof="foaf:Image" src="//www.uwindsor.ca/dailynews/sites/uwindsor.ca.dailynews/files/styles/full/public/900_13going30.jpg?itok=4wMwo4zc" alt="Jennifer Garner swinging purse" title="" /><span class="media-caption">The 2004 Jennifer Garner vehicle "13 Going on 30" might make pleasant Valentine viewing, says professor Vincent Georgie.</span> <div class="article-title"> <h2><a href="/dailynews/2025-02-13/prof-suggests-picks-valentine-flicks">Prof suggests picks for Valentine flicks</a></h2> </div> <span property="dc:title" content="Prof suggests picks for Valentine flicks" class="rdf-meta element-hidden"></span><span property="sioc:num_replies" content="0" datatype="xsd:integer" class="rdf-meta element-hidden"></span> <div class="article-date-created">Feb 14th, 2025</div> </div> <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p>Valentine’s Day is here, and with romance in the air, what better way to celebrate than diving into films that embrace what the holiday is all about — or not.</p> <p>The formulaic nature of a romantic comedy can make it a popular choice for movie lovers this time of year. Throw in a quirky best friend for the lead to confide in, and you’ve got a movie.</p> <p>However, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, says Vincent Georgie, marketing faculty at the Odette School of Business and executive director and chief programmer of the Windsor International Film Festival.</p> <p>“Valentine’s Day can easily engage a cross-section of people who celebrate. When we know someone really well, we might know that they're comfortable with contact, but it's always good to check in.”</p> <p>Rudzinski offers the following advice:</p> <ul> <li>In romantic or sexual relationships, it's a good idea to check in regularly about boundaries and consent. Have your desires or boundaries changed over time? What about your partner?</li> <li>Being good at consent requires being good at rejection. Create space for the other person to say no, and work on accepting rejection with care.</li> <li>Sometimes certain dates hold expectations about sex, but remember, it's up to you -- and your consenting partner -- to decide what Valentine’s Day means to you.
