Restoration Regulation and its implications for agroforestry practices.</em></strong></p> <p>Two years after the European Agroforestry Federation (EURAF) raised issues about mistaken terminology and indicators in the draft Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR) (<a href="https://zenodo.org/records/7907113" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Policy Briefing #18 v2</a>), and particularly the bizarre concept of &#8220;<a href="https://www.arc2020.eu/op-ed-the-bizarre-concept-of-non-productive-trees/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">non-productive trees</a>,&#8221; a consultation has just closed on a “uniform format” to be used by Member States for their Nature Restoration Plans.&nbsp;Discussions are moving from the Commission to a national level, but <strong>several&nbsp;issues remain unresolved.&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>EURAF hopes that stakeholders active at the national level will try to fix some of these issues in the two years remaining before national Nature Restoration plans have to be published by Member States. In general terms, EURAF is concerned that the proposed rules and format for national Nature Restoration Plans <strong>missed the opportunity for integrated reporting</strong> on agriculture, forest, environment, and carbon sequestration at a parcel-scale and that increased targets for some of the biodiversity indicators proposed (like standing dead or lying biomass) could have a negative effect on nature at a time of increased fire risk.</p> <div class="more-link-wrapper"><a class="more-link" href="https://resilience-blog.com/2025/02/13/non-productive-trees-non-productive-policies/">Continue reading<span class="screen-reader-text">Non-Productive Trees &#8211; Non-Productive Policies?</span></a></div> <span class="comments-link"> <i class="fas fa-comment" aria-hidden="true" title="comment icon"></i> <a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2025/02/13/non-productive-trees-non-productive-policies/#respond">Leave a Comment</a></span> </div> </div> </article> </div><div class="post-10170 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-climate-change category-drought category-fire-management category-forest-resilience category-forest-risks category-mediterranean category-resilience tag-biodiversity tag-europe tag-forest-management tag-mediterranean tag-resilience entry"> <article> <div class="featured-image"><a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2025/02/10/resilience-for-mediterranean-landscapes-impacts-and-solutions-to-climate-hazards-for-forestry-and-agriculture/">Resilience for Mediterranean landscapes: impacts and solutions to climate hazards for forestry and agriculture<img width="2560" height="1440" src="https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/banner-mooc-page_no-title-scaled.jpg" class="attachment-full size-full wp-post-image" alt="" decoding="async" srcset="https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/banner-mooc-page_no-title-scaled.jpg 2560w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/banner-mooc-page_no-title-300x169.jpg 300w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/banner-mooc-page_no-title-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/banner-mooc-page_no-title-768x432.jpg 768w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/banner-mooc-page_no-title-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/banner-mooc-page_no-title-2048x1152.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></a></div> <div class="post-container"> <div class='post-header'> <h2 class='post-title'> <a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2025/02/10/resilience-for-mediterranean-landscapes-impacts-and-solutions-to-climate-hazards-for-forestry-and-agriculture/">Resilience for Mediterranean landscapes: impacts and solutions to climate hazards for forestry and agriculture</a> </h2> <div class="post-byline">Published <a class='date' href='https://resilience-blog.com/2025/02/'>February 10, 2025</a> by <a class='author' href='https://resilience-blog.com/author/santiago-alarconefi-int/'>Santiago Alarcón</a></div> </div> <div class="post-content"> <div class="twitter-share"><a href="https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fresilience-blog.com%2F2025%2F02%2F10%2Fresilience-for-mediterranean-landscapes-impacts-and-solutions-to-climate-hazards-for-forestry-and-agriculture%2F&#038;via=efiresilience" class="twitter-share-button">Tweet</a></div> <p>The<a href="https://www.resalliance.eu/resilience-for-mediterrenean-landscapes/"> <strong>Resilience for Mediterranean Landscapes</strong></a> MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) is a groundbreaking online course developed as part of the <a href="https://www.resalliance.eu/the-project/"><strong>ResAlliance Project</strong>.</a> This free and accessible resource addresses the growing challenges of <strong>climate hazards in the Mediterranean region</strong>, focusing on <strong>innovative solutions</strong> in <strong>forestry</strong> and <strong>agriculture</strong>.</p> <p>Featuring contributions from experts at <strong>16 leading European research institutions</strong> and real-world case studies from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece, and Cyprus, this MOOC combines cutting-edge research with practical knowledge.</p> <p>Whether you&#8217;re a professional in forestry or agriculture, a student, a policymaker, or simply someone passionate about environmental resilience, this course equips you with the tools and insights to understand and tackle the impacts of climate change by exploring practical solutions at various levels to enhance resilience, especially in forestry and agriculture. Yet, soils represent <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.4155/cmt.13.77" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the largest terrestrial carbon pool</a>, and <a href="https://www.pnas.org/doi/abs/10.1073/pnas.2304663120" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">accommodate more than half of the Earth’s biodiversity</a>. There’s still a lot we don’t know about how carbon stocks and soil biodiversity respond when nature is left to recover on its own. This is partly because soil is incredibly complex, expensive to study, and varies greatly from place to place.&nbsp;</p> <p>The WILDCARD project is working to close this gap. By collecting data on soil carbon and biotic communities, the latter using advanced environmental DNA (eDNA) techniques, we aim to better understand how soils respond to rewilding. This will help us learn more about the role of soil in storing carbon and supporting biodiversity. To support the project<strong> </strong>consortium and other organisations involved in the project, our partner <strong>Research Institute for Nature and Forest (INBO)</strong> created a series of videos that explain the steps for collecting soil samples.</p> <div class="more-link-wrapper"><a class="more-link" href="https://wildcard-project.eu/from-farmlands-to-forests-understanding-the-effects-of-rewilding-on-soils">Continue reading<span class="screen-reader-text">From farmlands to forests: Understanding the effects of rewilding on soils</span></a></div> <span class="comments-link"> <i class="fas fa-comment" aria-hidden="true" title="comment icon"></i> <a href="https://wildcard-project.eu/from-farmlands-to-forests-understanding-the-effects-of-rewilding-on-soils#respond">Leave a Comment</a></span> </div> </div> </article> </div><div class="post-10155 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-education category-media category-uncategorized tag-human-centered-design tag-media tag-science-communication tag-stakeholder-engagement tag-toolkit tag-transformative-change entry"> <article> <div class="featured-image"><a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2025/01/23/it-starts-with-us-human-centered-design-to-tackle-barriers-for-collaboration/">It Starts with Us: Human-Centered Design to Tackle Barriers for Collaboration <img width="1920" height="1446" src="https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/AdobeStock_865109450.jpg" class="attachment-full size-full wp-post-image" alt="human-centered approach. In recent years, concepts like nature-based solutions (NbS) have emerged as promising tools for fostering social empowerment and ecological transformation. Yet, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959378020307159" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">studies</a> reveal a significant limitation: these concepts are often applied within narrow, specific contexts, restricting their potential to drive transformative change. A troubling pattern emerges when we look closer at how &#8220;nature&#8221; is framed. Complex, top-down power dynamics often exclude marginalised communities and species from meaningful participation. This disconnect underscores the need to rethink how we approach biodiversity conservation.&nbsp;</p> <p>The challenges we face in creating a sustainable society are not just environmental — <strong>they&#8217;re deeply human</strong>. We often struggle to align on shared goals to protect the planet. Different languages, perspectives, and priorities can create barriers to collaboration. To develop solutions that effectively address biodiversity loss,<strong> we must first overcome the human problems that stand in the way</strong>. This calls for a shift toward designing communications and public engagement strategies with a human-centred approach.&nbsp;</p> <div class="more-link-wrapper"><a class="more-link" href="https://resilience-blog.com/2025/01/23/it-starts-with-us-human-centered-design-to-tackle-barriers-for-collaboration/">Continue reading<span class="screen-reader-text">It Starts with Us: Human-Centered Design to Tackle Barriers for Collaboration </span></a></div> <span class="comments-link"> <i class="fas fa-comment" aria-hidden="true" title="comment icon"></i> <a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2025/01/23/it-starts-with-us-human-centered-design-to-tackle-barriers-for-collaboration/#respond">Leave a Comment</a></span> </div> </div> </article> </div><div class="post-10142 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-climate-change category-forest-restoration category-publication category-research category-superb tag-biodiversity tag-climate-change tag-ecosystem-services tag-europe tag-forest-restoration tag-superb entry"> <article> <div class="featured-image"><a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2024/12/20/10-things-we-can-all-learn-from-the-evolution-of-forest-restoration-initiatives-in-europe/">10 Things We Can All Learn from the Evolution of Forest Restoration Initiatives in Europe <img width="1748" height="1240" src="https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Watercolor-Seasons-Greetings-Greeting-Card.png" class="attachment-full size-full wp-post-image" alt="" decoding="async" srcset="https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Watercolor-Seasons-Greetings-Greeting-Card.png 1748w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Watercolor-Seasons-Greetings-Greeting-Card-300x213.png 300w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Watercolor-Seasons-Greetings-Greeting-Card-1024x726.png 1024w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Watercolor-Seasons-Greetings-Greeting-Card-768x545.png 768w, https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Watercolor-Seasons-Greetings-Greeting-Card-1536x1090.png 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1748px) 100vw, 1748px" /></a></div> <div class="post-container"> <div class='post-header'> <h2 class='post-title'> <a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2024/12/20/10-things-we-can-all-learn-from-the-evolution-of-forest-restoration-initiatives-in-europe/">10 Things We Can All Learn from the Evolution of Forest Restoration Initiatives in Europe </a> </h2> <div class="post-byline">Published <a class='date' href='https://resilience-blog.com/2024/12/'>December 20, 2024</a> by <a class='author' href=''>Maitane Erdozain Ibarra and Rina Tsubaki</a></div> </div> <div class="post-content"> <p>Forest restoration is far more than a modern buzzword—its history runs deeper than most realize. class="twitter-share-button">Tweet</a></div> <p><em><strong>The potential impacts of generative AI images on public perceptions of forests</strong>&nbsp;</em></p> <p>Without a doubt, generative AI has captured global attention. ChatGPT, the most well-known generative AI tool, famously gained 1 million users within five days of its launch in 2022. Today, it receives over <a href="https://explodingtopics.com/blog/chatgpt-users" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">130 million visits</a> every month, ranking as one of the most visited sites worldwide. &nbsp;</p> <p>What is particularly striking is the fast adoption of this new technology among younger users. In the UK, nearly <a href="https://www.ofcom.org.uk/internet-based-services/technology/gen-z-driving-early-adoption-of-gen-ai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">80% of young people between the ages of 13 and 17</a> report regular use of such tools. In the Netherlands, the same applies to <a href="https://www.uva.nl/content/nieuws/persberichten/2024/05/70-van-de-nederlanders-gebruikt-nog-geen-generatieve-ai.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">74% of those aged</a> 16 and 24.&nbsp;</p> <p>As AI capabilities expand, particularly in generating and editing images, such technologies are increasingly integrated into daily life. These types of images are now prevalent on social media and even appear in political campaigns and NGO reports. Needless to say, as AI-generated content starts to permeate our everyday routines, increased AI exposure could potentially influence how people perceive, relate to, and make sense of environmental issues and sites, including forests and the people who live and work in them. &nbsp;</p> <div class="more-link-wrapper"><a class="more-link" href="https://resilience-blog.com/2024/12/16/reductionism-stereotypes-biases-a-collaborative-process-to-investigate-generative-ai-through-forest-images/">Continue reading<span class="screen-reader-text">Reductionism, stereotypes, biases: A collaborative process to investigate generative AI through forest images </span></a></div> <span class="comments-link"> <i class="fas fa-comment" aria-hidden="true" title="comment icon"></i> <a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2024/12/16/reductionism-stereotypes-biases-a-collaborative-process-to-investigate-generative-ai-through-forest-images/#respond">Leave a Comment</a></span> </div> </div> </article> </div><div class="post-10083 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-mediterranean tag-agriculture tag-mediterranean tag-natural-resource-management tag-remote-sensing tag-resilience tag-technology tag-water entry"> <article> <div class="featured-image"><a href="https://resilience-blog.com/2024/12/12/minimising-water-inputs-and-increasing-productivity-in-agricultural-plots/">Minimising water inputs and increasing productivity in agricultural plots<img width="1068" height="712" src="https://resilience-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Picture3-IRTA.jpg" class="attachment-full size-full wp-post-image" alt="Researcher working with the DT.
