He was a member of the scientific or organizing committee of some meetings (i.e. the Second National Congress of Photochemistry and Photobiology and the V National Congress "Giornate di Chimica delle Sostanze Naturali"). His meaning scientific interests refer to the study of the chemical and photochemical reactivity of heterocyclic compounds. The behavior of furan derivatives has been studied both in hydrolytic and oxidative conditions. The photochemical behavior of some aromatic pentatomic heterocyclic compounds has been studied towards both photosubstitutions (these reactions have been used in the synthesis of naturally occurring compounds with biological activity as photosensitizers of singlet oxygen) and isomerizations. Some years ago Prof. D'Auria started to study the photochemical degradation of some naturally occurring compounds and not. In particular, the photochemical behavior of model compounds of lignin and of lignin itself has been studied in the presence of photochemically generated singlet oxygen. Furthermore, the photochemical degradation of some diphenyl ether herbicides has been studied. He is the author of more than 200 articles in international journals and of numerous patents.
