This tough situation forced farm households to adopt different strategies to cope with their food gaps which is reported between (51-91%) of the total requirements. This paper aims at determining the factors that influence food security among farm households in rural Sudan taking Gizera and Managil localities as case in point. It tries to discuss the guidelines, tools and frameworks for evaluating and measuring of household food security in the area. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the food security situation in the state, using a module concerning the demand side and to investigate and evaluate the Food Security and Nutrition (FSN) status in the state. To achieve this objective primary data were collected by the mean of questionnaires targeting house hold (394) sample size has been determined by using the Kerjcie and Morgan table, the household questionnaire was to determine the status of the food security within the state, using the USA. Household Food Security Survey Module: six-item short, and to determine the coping strategies of the household. The main results of this research are that: there only 9% of the households in high or marginal food security situation and the main factors that affecting the household food security status are age and job with significant P value 0.002 and 0.013 respectively. About 60.2% use borrowing from others as one of their coping strategy. Structured questionnaire using stratified sampling technique was used to gather households' poverty and food security data from four localities in North Kordofan State, a total of 205 households were interviewed. Household Economy Approach and Costs of the Basic Needs were used to evaluate the food security situation while Foster-Greer-Thorbecke poverty measures and Gini coefficient were used to assess poverty situation. The results revealed that farming and animal production constitute 88% of the households' income, households' spending exceed the earned income by 37%. Moreover, the share of food spending amounted to 71% of the total households' total expenditure implying that households' in North Kordofan State has poor access to food and securing a minimum level of food becomes the top priority for the low income households. Only 39% of respondents were found to be food secure, 24% were marginally food insecure, 10% were moderately food insecure and 27% were severely food insecure. The poverty incidence, average poverty gap and square poverty gap were 68.8%, 37.3% and 20.3%, respectively. The Gini coefficient was 48.7% when the 1 US$ per day index was applied. The richest quintile share of the received income is almost more than 17 folds of the poorest, indicating a perfect income inequality among the households in rainfed agriculture in North Kordofan State. It is characterized by mixed rain-fed crops and livestock, agro-pastoral and household economy. The main objectives were to determine the optimum field crop combination that maximizes small-holders' profitability, to access food security situation in terms of food intake and net income, to estimate contribution of different production factors to the variation of different crop yields and to calculate the international competitiveness and comparative advantage for economic efficiency of resource allocation of different farming system for cash, food and minor crops grown. in the study area. The primary data were collected via structured questionnaire using multistage random sampling technique to select 130 householders. Linear programming (L.P), partial crop budget (P.B.), robust regression, household economy approach (HEA) and policy analysis matrix (PAM) as empirical analytical tools were used. The L.P results showed that, the optimum crop combination that maximized the small farmer gross margin (SDG 743 or US $ 406) was to grow 0.552 feddan (0.42 ha.) of sorghum and 3.576 feddan of millet. Results of partial crop budget revealed that, sorghum and millet gave highest gross margin of SDG 206 and 176 respectively. The coefficient of estimates for land, labor and capital showed significant difference from zero at level of 10%, and the average farm produced 96% of the potential production. The daily energy received per person per day equals 1133 Kcal, which was below the recommended amount. This result gives indication to the unbalanced food intake by households in terms of energy need and in term of net income. Accordingly, the area can be described as food insecure. Results obtained by PAM revealed that millet, sorghum and groundnuts production in the area have extremely high comparative advantage and international competitiveness. Food insecurity frailty is basically more broad and serious in rural areas than in urban ones. This study was conducted to analyze the determinants of household food security in Pawe woreda. This study followed two-stage sampling procedure to draw samples representing rural households. The total of 330 households were randomly selected from four rural Kebeles. The study employed survey questionnaire, Focus group Discussion (FGD) and Key Informant Interview (KII) data collection methods. Descriptive statistics were used. Accordingly, the percentages of food security status of all respondents in the study area were found to be 26.36%, 32.12% and 41.52% were low, medium and high dietary diversity score, respectively. In econometric analysis we employed ordered probit model. Accordingly, education level of household head and farm experience, utilization of credit, tropical livestock, market information and access to training showed a significant and positive effect on food security. Whereas distance from the nearest market have a negative and significant effect on food security.
